Exclusive: Michael Irby has signed with Brillstein Entertainment Partners for representation.
Irby is coming off two hit shows that ended their runs in 2023, FX’s Mayans M.C. and HBO’s Barry.
In the Kurt Sutter and Elgin James-co-created motorcycle drama Mayans. M.C., Irby played the series regular role of Obispo ‘Bishop’ Losa across the show’s 5 seasons. The Sons of Anarchy spinoff follows the titular M.C. based in the fictional California border town of Santo Padre. Bishop held leadership positions including former Presidente and Vice Presidente of the club’s Santo Padre Charter. The show is connected to Soa via the character of Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera), Bishop’s cousin.
In Barry, Irby played polite Bolivian mobster Cristobal Sifuentes across the crime drama’s four seasons. Cristobal allies with his criminal associate NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) merging their organizations and later their...

Unlike a movie, a TV show is not generally meant to be consumed in a single sitting. It is, at least in theory, designed to be enjoyed episode by episode. So having already celebrated the best series of the year (and the best TV performances), we’re here now to highlight a few individual chapters that particularly stood out to us from our hundreds and hundreds of hours of viewing.
As a rule, we excluded any title that had already made either of our individual top 10s. (Sorry, Richie episode of The Bear. And “Long, Long Time” from The Last of Us. And half this season of Succession. Half this season of Reservation Dogs. And, and, and …) This was in part to save ourselves the trouble of singing praises we’ve already sung so many times before, but mostly in an effort to spread the love. For the same reasons,...

When Anthony Carrigan’s Chechen gangster Noho Hank was first introduced in HBO’s Barry, he mostly brought levity to the dark comedy co-created by Bill Hader. But by the final season, while Carrigan still got laughs from Hank’s unique diction and other eccentricities, he also led the character down a tragic path where he had his lover and business partner, Cristobal (Michael Irby), killed before dying himself.
On the same day Carrigan was nominated for this third Emmy for this performance, it was reported that he would be starring as superhero Metamorpho in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. It made for an “insane” day for him. “It’s so nuts,” he tells THR. During the interview, Carrigan also delved further into Hank’s transformation and saying farewell to the flamboyantly dressed criminal.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the series finale of Mayans M.C.] Mayans M.C. fans are still reeling after that ‘bloody’ series finale, which saw Ez Reyes’s (Jd Pardo) past come back to haunt him in the worst way and his brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas) having to make the ultimate sacrifice. As the war between the Mayans and the Sons came to a close, Angel tearfully announced to the biker game his time with the crew is closing, as he plans to get away to live a clean life with his son. Although his brother Ez understood, their fellow members didn’t make it that easy for him to leave, as the brothers get ambushed in Templo by Bishop (Michael Irby), Gilly (Vincent Vargas), Hank (Frankie Loyal), and new member Nestor (Gino Vento). They force Angel to kill Ez, who was revealed to be an FBI informant, to prove himself loyal and officially leave this life ...

Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from the series finale of FX’s Mayans M.C. titled “Slow to Bleed Fair Son.”
On tonight’s episode of Mayans M.C. titled “Slow to Bleed Fair Son,” the biker gang whose origins date back to Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy and later expanded into its own spinoff series takes its last ride—and it’s messy as hell.
Without El Padrino Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) at the helm of the club, it was only a matter of time before the whole thing exploded into chaos. After being ousted by former prospect turned president Ez Reyes (Jd Pardo) in Season 4, it took some time for Alvarez to figure out what his life would look like in a post-Mayans world. As the founding member of the charter, Alvarez struggled but discovered in the finale ever so clearly that he is where...

FX’s Mayans M.C. season five episode 10 – the series finale – is, hands down, the best episode of the entire series. Amid all the blood and deaths, questions are answered, and dues are stamped paid. Not every character deserves their fate, but every death is, in its own way, justified.
Sons of Anarchy was Hamlet with motorcycles. Mayans M.C. is also a Shakespearean tragedy, complete with betrayals, love, loyalty, and murder.
Season five episode 10, “Slow to Bleed Fair Son,” begins with confirmation that Felipe has died. His funeral is the opening scene, with Angel (Clayton Cardenas) holding Maverick and Ez (Jd Pardo) solemnly staring straight ahead as “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord” is sung.

Anthony Carrigan and Michael Irby in Barry
Whereas the drama series race can only bring back three of last year’s nominees, six of the comedy honorees are eligible again this year (Hacks and Curb Your Enthusiasm are the two that aren’t). It’s also the final season of heavyweights like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, and Ted Lasso along with two other past nominees, Atlanta and Dead to Me. There’s a slate of new shows in contention, like The Bear, Wednesday, Shrinking, and Poker Face, and it’s important not to forget the show that’s on the rise and likely to be the one to beat this year: Abbott Elementary.
The true challenge of predicting these races is the number of nominees in each based on the number of submissions on the ballot, especially in comparison to the drama categories. Both supporting races only have seven nominees,...

FX’s Mayans M.C. season five episode seven says goodbye to two major, longtime players as we head into the final stretch of episodes. The body count explodes in episode seven, with Emily finally getting her hands bloody instead of calling on Ez to do her dirty work, and a Santo Padre associate is taken out after being labeled the club’s rat. Plus, Ibarra’s son finally exacts his revenge at the most inopportune time.
But it’s the gut-wrenching deaths of two key Mayans M.C. characters that make episode seven so heartbreaking.
Plenty of spoilers ahead…you’ve been warned!

Series star Jd Pardo makes his directorial debut with FX’s Mayans M.C. season five episode four, “I See the Black Light.”
Ez’s betting the Mayans M.C. Santo Padre’s future on taking over the Lobos New Generation’s drug business in the U.S., and he trades away the 12 crates of stolen guns for supplies to make more heroin. His men are frustrated and upset by the deal, and Ez reminds them that without the pipeline, the war will be lost no matter how many guns they have in their possession.
Hank (Frankie Loyal) informs Ez, Angel (Clayton Cardenas), and Bishop (Michael Irby) – the inner circle – that Creeper told him there’s a rat in the clubhouse. Someone in jail told Creeper, and Creeper believes it. So does Hank.

Barry primarily revolves around the titular central character, but it also delves into the lives of several flawed characters connected to him. The crime associates, Noho Hank, and his love interest, Cristobal, as well as Barry’s mentor and father figure, Fuches, play pivotal roles in molding Barry’s character while exhibiting their own flaws. By examining these characters closely, we can better understand their purpose in the story and how their respective journeys unfold.

What Was Fuches’ Role In Shaping Barry’s Character?
After Barry was discharged from the Marines, his father’s close friend, Monroe Fuches (played by Stephen Root), who had been a fatherly figure to him, became the catalyst for Barry’s descent into violence. Fuches introduced Barry to the criminal underworld and assigned him to work as a contract killer. Unbeknownst to Barry, these targets were mostly innocent people like Ryan Madison, who...

This article contains spoilers for the "Barry" series finale.
One of my favorite episodes of "The Sopranos" is "The Test Dream," in which Tony (James Gandolfini) falls asleep in a hotel room and has a surreal dream. Whenever "The Sopranos" needed to be especially foreboding, it went to dream sequences. Season 6 features a multi-episode one when Tony, in a coma and on death's door, has a vision of an alternate life for himself as a law-abiding middle-aged salesman. That's why when "Barry" started going surreal in season 3 — our eponymous protagonist (Bill Hader) saw himself standing on a beach alongside all his victims — my mind jumped to "The Sopranos."
The two HBO shows have more in common than you'd think, down to the same guiding question: can people change? "The Sopranos" is at its core about a man in therapy, a process that is supposed to help you reshape yourself. "Barry...

Just before he confronts the gangsters who’ve abducted his family, Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) takes a moment in the parking lot. “Lord, I’m gonna die tonight. Please give me the strength to sacrifice myself so that my son can live a long and pious life,” he prays. “And that by doing this, all my sins will be washed and I will be redeemed in your eyes, and I will be able to sit next to you in my rightful place in the kingdom of heaven for all eternity. Amen.”
As it turns out, the encounter never actually comes to that. Barry’s barely out of the car when Fuches (Stephen Root) ushers Barry’s unharmed son John (Zachary Golinger) straight to him, then disappears into the night without a word. Hader‘s face registers less relief than disappointment. Dying for John would’ve been hard, but it would’ve been straightforward.

"If I can change ... and you can change ... everybody can change!!!" Of course, those were the immortal words uttered by boxing champ Rocky Balboa in 1985 when he solved the Cold War (citation needed), yet they're also words that resonate for the characters in HBO's "Barry."
When the series (which just ended its run with the final episode of its fourth season) began in 2018, it seemed to be the tale of Barry Berkman (Bill Hader), an ex-Marine turned assassin-for-hire who was looking to escape his existence of dread and death and found a guiding light in the form of acting. Brought into the Los Angeles struggling actor fold by teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) and fellow student (and later girlfriend) Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg), Barry believed that true change was possible via working out his deep-seated trauma and mental issues on stage.

This post contains spoilers for the series finale of "Barry."
The series finale of "Barry" (read /Film's review here) was filled with many unpredictable twists and turns but also managed to deliver a satisfying conclusion that was surprisingly heartfelt, even during some of the episode's most tense moments. As the show has gone on, the romance between Barry (Bill Hader) and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) has become a shadow of the blossoming relationship they once had, allowing for the tragic love affair between NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) and Cristobal (Michael Irby) to take center stage. The series finale of "Barry" (read /Film's review here) was filled with many unpredictable twists and turns but also managed to deliver a satisfying conclusion that was surprisingly heartfelt, even during some of the episode's most tense moments. This post contains mild spoilers for the "Barry" series finale.
Over the course of his lengthy and varied career, Stephen Root has proven himself to be a consummate character actor; not just someone reliable and hard-working, but a true chameleon, darting in and out of disparate genres and roles.
As a result, it's incredibly difficult to choose a definitive Root character — there are some he's more famous for, like his creepy predator in "Get Out" or his eccentric billionaire in "Newsradio." Yet there are numerous other appearances of his that are just as beloved if not more so.
Throughout his resume, however, one doesn't see too many sexy, virile, crime lord assassin characters. That's all changed thanks to "Barry" and the series star, Bill Hader, who in this fourth and final season of the show has transformed Root's Monroe Fuches into the mysterious, intimidating, and — yes — sexy jailbird, the Raven.

[This story contains major spoilers from the series finale of Barry, “Wow.”]
In the end, it wasn’t the Chechen mob or the FBI who finally took down the outlaw assassin Barry Berkman; it was (second spoiler warning!) Henry Winkler’s Gene M. Cousineau.
Of course, Cousineau thought he had already done this when he set up Barry’s arrest in the season three finale, but NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) and Cristobal’s (Michael Irby) failed assassination attempt gave Barry the opportunity to escape prison and live on the lam for eight years with Sally (Sarah Goldberg) and their eventual son, John. Cousineau also believed he’d finally taken care of his Barry Berkman problem in the final season’s fourth episode when he fired his Rip Torn-gifted “prop gun” at whom he assumed was a vengeful Barry, but instead, he shot his son, Leo (Andrew Leeds), who was delivering takeout from Gene’s beloved Coral Tree Cafe to his secluded Big Bear cabin.

Note: The following contains spoilers for the “Barry” series finale.
The final episode of HBO’s “Barry” found fan-favorite character Noho Hank meeting a deadly end, and while actor Anthony Carrigan went through a “grieving process” saying goodbye to the character, he considered Hank’s heartbreaking final moments to be a fitting end for the character that was in lockstep with the choices he’s made this season.
During a showdown at Hank’s compound, Fuches (Stephen Root) arrives with a dozen men armed to the teeth and is ready for war. But Fuches offers Hank a way out – admit he murdered Cristobal (Michael Irby), and he’ll walk away. Hank starts to break down and comes close to the truth, but retreats back into denial and calls Fuches a liar. At this point, Fuches pulls out a gun and shoots Hank in the chest, killing him.

As one of the greatest dark comedies of the decade barrels towards its very last episode, viewers have watched in equal parts horror and curiosity as "Barry" has killed off beloved characters, unexpectedly jumped forward in time, and kept making certain fans voice one consistent concern: where has all the comedy gone? For many productions, taking these many risks in so short a time would've felt like tempting fate. It's not every day, after all, that a series earns such a great amount of trust in its viewership that it can afford to defy expectations. For "Barry," this is simply par for the course.
So what's the secret sauce behind such bold and fearless writing? For star and co-creator Bill Hader, that boils down to one guiding light. Rather than trying to take all the opinions and wants of the audience into account,...

Angel (Clayton Cardenas) knows half the guards belong to Iron War, and Gilly (Vincent Vargas) believes the attack happened right after he finished visiting with Creeper.
They don’t know Creeper’s condition, but the attack was brutal.
Kate (Stella Maeve) visits Creeper (Joseph Raymond Lucero) at the hospital, where he’s handcuffed and hooked up to machines. Hard though it may be to believe, there are just two episodes left in the HBO series "Barry," which used to lean more heavily on the comic side of things even amidst its dark setup. Now, though, it's pretty much all in on darkness. And with "a nice meal," the title belies a similar sense of grimness. Last week left off on quite the cliffhanger: Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) had come very close to his mission of returning to Los Angeles and killing his old acting teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) for potentially consulting on a biopic of his life, before being captured by Jim Moss (Robert Wisdom) and brought to his garage, where we know weaker men have barely withstood the terror of this grieving father/ex-cop. Oh, and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) is being beset upon by a mix of hallucinations and angry ex-co-workers as she fails to tend...

When last we left Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) and Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg) on the HBO series "Barry," they were in great distress. (When has that ever not been true?) Barry and Sally have made a meager life for themselves and their son John (Zachary Golinger) in middle America for eight years, thanks to being in the FBI Witness Protection program after Barry revealed secrets of his time with the Chechen mob to get out of jail. They've reinvented themselves as Clark and Emily, a married couple that doesn't do much aside from home-schooling John, and working at a local diner. But Sally and Barry are both shocked to learn, via the Hollywood Reporter, that a) Warner Bros. is pursuing a biopic about Barry's life as a hitman/acting student and b) Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) has come out of hiding after having shot his son Leo (Andrew Leeds) to purportedly consult on the film.

Well, everyone, it's been 8 years. Not for all of us, as we watch week to week the latest horrifying exploits of hitman/actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) in the HBO show "Barry." But for Barry and Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg), it's been 8 years since the events of last week's episode, in which Barry had escaped from prison and hid in Sally's apartment, to find that she was surprisingly willing to join him in Witness Protection for having named names to the FBI. Last week's installment ended with the shock that a long enough period of time had elapsed so that Barry and Sally not only had new identities in the middle of the country, but also had a son named John (Zachary Golinger). "tricky legacies", marking the start of the back half of the show's final season, is not remotely as eventful as last week's episode, which not only featured...

HBO is riding high right now with the final seasons of "Barry" and "Succession" inching closer and closer to two distinct endgames that are sure to hit audiences right in the chest, albeit in totally different ways. Creator and writer Jesse Armstrong has already played the shocking death card for the billionaire sect with the demise of larger-than-life patriarch Logan Roy. On the other hand, episode 4 of season 4 of "Barry" certainly had a tragic, heartbreaking death, but it's surely not the last murder planned. For a series that was supposed to be a comedy, "Barry" is amassing a pretty high kill count.
Specifically, the death of Cristobal (Michael Irby) in "It Takes a Psycho" was definitely a gut punch for director Bill Hader when tasked with shooting the sequence when the day finally came. "It was pretty tense," Hader told The Wrap. "It's a very sad scene, and...

“Starting…now.”
That’s been Barry Berkman’s (Bill Hader) unofficial mantra ever since he killed detective Janice Moss (Paula Newsome) and shattered his chance at a new life. Barry hoped that closing his eyes and pressing an invisible reset button would wash away the sins of his past life as a contract killer, but the cyclical nature of violence, how it seeps out and infects everyone that it touches, has kept Barry in a spin cycle from which there is seemingly no escape.

This week's episode of "Barry" was a heartbreaker. More specifically, the already super-dark show asked us to trade our tension for tears over the course of a half-hour that saw once-winsome criminal NoHo Hank's (Anthony Carrigan) relationship with his lover Cristobal (Michael Irby) fall to pieces. By the episode's end, Cristobal was dead on the ground and Hank was shattered and resigned at once.
Before the pair's bloody breakup, though, they endured another harrowing moment, during which Hank's attempt to kill his underlings in one fell swoop almost took Cristobal down with them. In an interview with Variety, Irby debriefed about that harrowing silo sequence, in which his character is briefly entirely buried under pounds upon pounds of desert sand. It turns out the actor really did get buried, but did so safely thanks to some good, old-fashioned movie magic.

You’re not alone: “Barry” stunt coordinate Wade Allen also misses the days when the HBO series was about a fucked-up hitman who wanted to be an actor. The darkness of the show’s final season has only grown alongside Bill Hader’s visual style; and Episode 4, “it takes a psycho,” required Allen, production designer Eric Schoonover, special effects supervisor Ryan Riley, and visual effects supervisor Laura Hill, to create the show’s most complex — and easily one of its most horrifying — visual gags to date. Unlike the fate of Sian Heder’s “Mega Girls” franchise, which we have to imagine the studio is locking down tight, a ton of Episode 4 spoilers below.

One of the reasons that HBO's "Barry" has become such an exceptional television series over the last four seasons is its ability to walk a tightrope between an offbeat comedy and a dark thriller. Co-creator and star Bill Hader has also successfully shifted himself as the leading man on center stage to one of many main characters in his own show. "Barry" has become just as much about examining the underbelly of dysfunctional relationships as it is about exposing the uncaring, ruthless machinations of the criminal underworld.

It's certainly among its most heartbreaking; there's the death of Cristobal (Michael Irby), and of Hank's (Anthony Carrigan) heart with him, a scene that unfolds with excruciating slowness and then, suddenly, all at once. There's the shooting of Gene's (Henry Winkler) son, a senseless, awful tragedy that happens to a character whose arc has always been defined by a tidy sense of dramatic irony. And there's Barry (Bill Hader), the black hole around which so many characters still orbit despite themselves.
None of these plots, however, hurt quite like Sally's (Sarah Goldberg). At first glance, Sally's storyline in the latest episode of "Barry" is nowhere near as gutting as the bleak twists of fate mentioned above.

Note: The following contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4, Episode 4.
“Barry” viewers witnessed one of the HBO series’ most emotional moments in Sunday’s episode, as the relationship between Noho Hank (Anthony Carrigan) and Cristobal (Michael Irby) came to a tragic end. And while Hank’s decision to allow Cristobal to be murdered may come as a shock to some, Carrigan spoke to TheWrap about where his character’s headspace was at during that pivotal moment.
In the fourth episode of the final season, Hank has been re-approached by the Chechens after trying to start his own criminal empire with Cristobal. Under threat of the Chechens, Hank eliminates the combined gang that he and Cristobal had put together, much to Cristobal’s chagrin. Later that night, upset over Hank’s decision, Cristobal tries to break up with him. While Hank cautions Cristobal that he can’t leave him, insinuating he’ll...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Barry Season 4 Episode 4, “It Takes a Psycho.”] It’s one shock after another as we reach the halfway point of Barry‘s final season. First, the heartbreaker: Just after we think that Cristobal (Michael Irby) isn’t going to die as a result of Noho Hank’s (Anthony Carrigan) new deal going back on their business venture (he survives the sand!), he refuses to get on board because he wanted to be legitimate (and all their partners were killed). As Cristobal sees it, the man he loves wouldn’t have done something so cold-blooded; he’s ready to walk away. Hank warns him he can’t … because he knows too much. And with that, Cristobal is killed before he even enters his car. “I had the wind knocked out of me, truly,” Carrigan tells TV Insider of discovering Cristobal’s death. “I had no idea that that was where it was headed. I ...

As “Barry” barrels towards its series finale, the HBO series takes a couple of big swings halfway through this final season. Not only does Episode 4 feature the death of a major character from the show, but it ends with a shocking time jump that jolts the story forward eight years into the future, with Barry (Bill Hader) and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) not only living together but seemingly with a son of their own.
The idea for the time jump was born out of Hader’s desire to see what would happen if all of the characters got what they wanted. “Would they be happy? Could they maintain that?” Hader told TheWrap in our latest episodic interview. Read on for plenty of insight into how Cristobal’s death came to be (and the pushback Hader received in the writers room) and the...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 4 of “Barry,” now streaming on HBO Max.
Cristobal Sifuentes, the former leader of the Bolivian mafia, NoHo Hank’s boyfriend and wannabe sand kingpin of Los Angeles, has narrowly evaded death multiple times throughout HBO’s “Barry.” But, in a tragic betrayal, he was killed by Hank’s Chechen henchmen in Sunday’s episode.
The happy couple seemed to be on a straight and narrow path after putting their lives of organized crime behind them, and devoting themselves to the sand business. But Hank (Anthony Carrigan) still had dreams of leading the powerful Chechens — ones he didn’t share with Cristobal (Michael Irby). With both Barry Berkman (Bill Hader), having escaped from prison, and the FBI hot on his feels, Hank took the Chechens up on their offer, and ruthlessly orchestrated the murder of his and Cristobal’s makeshift gang by...

[Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for Barry Episode 4, “it takes a psycho.”]
Barry just delivered one of the most devastating breakups in TV history. At the start of Season 3, it looked like Hank (Anthony Carrigan) and Crístobal (Michael Irby) were going to go the distance. Seeing the two together in Santa Fe made it seem possible that maybe, just maybe, someone on the series would have a happy ending. But as with most characters on Barry, ambition got the best of them both. Despite how desperately they wanted to have it all — the loving relationship, the control over a crime operation, the safety and security of knowing no one is out to get them — in the end it proved to be impossible.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4, Episode 4, “It Takes a Pscyho.”]
Open Mike Eagle’s 2020 album “Anime, Trauma, and Divorce” has a great track, “The Black Mirror Episode.” It details a couple deciding to separate after watching the Netflix show together. When Eagle (who confirmed the song is largely autobiographical) sing-shouts the one-line chorus “The ‘Black Mirror’ episode ruined my marriage,” you believe what he’s saying and feel the dark, absurd edge to the truth beneath it.
It’s the same sentiment explored in “It Takes a Psycho.” Episode 4 of “Barry” Season 4 is filled with people running away from relationships that seem to be working and running toward ones that appear doomed. People get what they claim to want and find that what they’ve acquired is rotted from the inside. It’s a half hour of delicately crafted misery, something that’s become a “Barry” calling card.
“Barry” has been slowly deconstructing the idea of a partnership — Hank (Anthony Carrigan...

... Well then! If you've just watched tonight's episode of HBO's "Barry," entitled "it takes a psycho", then you know that for a show that is rarely screwing around, this episode really and truly did not screw around. If you haven't watched, just be warned (even more than usual) that surprises are plenty this week, so spoilers ahoy.
As you'll likely recall, last week's installment wrapped with Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) escaping prison thanks to a botched hit job (involving a hitman/podcaster played by Fred Armisen). So it's no surprise that this week starts in prison, as the grumpy warden (Richard Riehle) instigates a beatdown of Barry's old friend Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root), presuming the latter let the would-be assassins inside. Though Fuches did know about the attempt on Barry's life and tried to warn the now-infuriated guards, he of course has no idea where Barry might be at the moment.
