“More stars than there are in heaven” was once the slogan for Hollywood’s largest studio. Larger-than-life celebrities like Judy Garland, Clark Gable, Fred Astaire, Katharine Hepburn, Jean Harlow and Gene Kelly were common fixtures at MGM. Today, MGM is an IP outpost purchased by Amazon for $8.5 billion in 2022, but in its day, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had the biggest lot in Hollywood and produced some of the most extravagant films. Located in Culver City, MGM’s famously sprawling lot began as it grew from the 40 acres owned by Samuel Goldwyn. The legendary MGM property was 3 miles long and housed more than 45 buildings and 14 stages, in addition to numerous outdoor sets that would be built over the years.
MGM was home to countless classic films, and in 1939 alone, the studio backed the timeless fantasy The Wizard of Oz and distributed the Oscar-winning Gone With the Wind, the Ernst Lubitsch/Greta Garbo comedy Ninotchka,...

After a dearth of new releases worth discussing in the few months since Barbenheimer, it’s been refreshing to see the response to Martin Scorsese’s epic Killers of the Flower Moon as it enters a wide release. While we’ll have our own extensive discussion coming soon on The Film Stage Show, the director himself has now provided some welcome homework as he’s highlighted six key films to watch that influenced the making of his David Grann adaptation.
Courtesy of TCM and Letterboxd, the director has joined the latter platform and provided nearly 60 companion films that he studied in preparation for making all of his features. While that entire list is well worth checking out, particularly the accompanying notes the director has provided, we’re keying in on the influences for Killers of the Flower Moon. Find the list below, including where to watch each film, as well as Scorsese’s full commentary.

Hackman Capital Partners and Square Mile Capital Management have acquired the Sony Pictures animation campus property in Los Angeles.
Terms of the deal, including price, for the art deco-style complex at 9050 Washington Blvd. in Culver City were not disclosed. The property is occupied by Sony’s animation department as an extension of the Hollywood studios’ neighboring studio lot in downtown Culver City. The campus is across the street from The Culver Studios, which is home to Amazon Studios, and The Culver Steps, both of which are already owned by the Hackman Capital/Square Mile partnership.
Culver Studios, created by silent movie pioneer Thomas Ince, earlier served as the filming location for Citizen Kane, E.T., Gone With the Wind and The Matrix, among other films.

Last year we were gifted with an excellent Blu-ray of a silent John Ford western, 3 Bad Men, which turned out to be a satisfying sentimental action tale. This month we get a much older silent western that’s almost as interesting. Its star is William S. Hart, the silent icon most of know through a still of a man in a ten-gallon hat brandishing two pistols in a barroom. Hart frequently played gunslingers, but not always. Tokyo Story
Written by Yasujiro Ozu and Kogo Noda
Directed by Yasujiro Ozu
Japan, 1953
December 12 marks 110 years since the birth of the great Japanese master Yasujiro Ozu (and 50 years to the date since his death). So what better way to commemorate the occasion than to revisit what is widely seen as his masterpiece among masterpieces, Tokyo Story, out now on a 3-disc dual format Blu-ray/DVD from The Criterion Collection? There have been few filmmakers treated as well by Criterion as Ozu, with more than a dozen titles available either as standalone discs or as part of a set. This latest edition of Tokyo Story, an update on their DVD release from 2003, is no exception.
The film looks spectacular in its new digital restoration, the sharpness making even more clear the attention to detail Ozu devoted to his compositions; sides, foregrounds, and backgrounds are all layered with authentic texture and...

There’s a sense of anger on Tyneside following Newcastle United’s inactivity in the transfer window.
Players such as Lyon striker Bafétimbi Gomis, Lille’s Florian Thauvin, Norwich City’s Anthony Pilkington, Blackpool’s Thomas Ince and Wigan’s James McCarthy were all targeted, but none were successfully signed by manager Alan Pardew.
A statistic that makes things worse is that Newcastle United were the only top-flight club not to make a permanent signing this summer.
However, in spite of the lack of signings in recent times, Pardew has signed some quality players in the past three years.
And here, we remind ourselves of his 10 Best Signings To Date.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has refused to throw in the towel in his pursuit of Blackpool’s Thomas Ince, according to the Mirror.
The Anfield club desperately tried to sign the forward during the January transfer window, but their pursuits of the player proved fruitless and the player himself now fears any chance of a return to the club where he began his professional career as a youth team player has gone.
Liverpool balked at the £6 million asking price by the Championship club in January, and were dismayed by the valuation considering the player only had 12 months left to run on his contract at the time.
That has led the England Under-21 international to express concerns he will be denied his dream return to Merseyside.
Rodgers however remains more hopeful that a deal can still be reached. He is reported to believe a bid of £4 million in the summer will...

Tom Ince is “unlikely” to join Liverpool before the transfer window closes today, according to the BBC.
The youngster, who began his career as a youth-team player at Liverpool, has been linked with a return to Anfield this month, but manager Brendan Rodgers has ruled it out as “unlikely”.
Rodgers was hoping to add to the capture of Philippe Coutinho from Inter Milan and Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea, but it appears as though his transfer business has ended in the current window.
“Ince was one where we could have made a deal but it looks like it’s a bit complicated,” he said.
“I don’t think there will be any more coming in now.”
Speaking after the 2-2 draw at Arsenal, Rodgers added:
“It will be difficult [to sign Ince]. It is also about affordability as well.
“If Tom stays at Blackpool it doesn’t mean he will never come to Liverpool...

Liverpool have been linked with a host of names this January, as tends to happen every time the transfer window opens, and newspapers feel the need to spin paper-selling stories regardless of the credence of the sources. In this article, I’ve reviewed all of the big rumours and debunked them all, sorting them into fact or fiction so you don’t have to.
Please be sure to note: these have been judged on the likelihood of happening this January and not necessarily in future windows.
Have a look through and be sure to add your view in the comments section at the end of the page.
So – here it goes, in no particular order:
1. David Villa (Mirror) – No Way!
Liverpool are only interested in a loan move, which is not happening, as Barcelona apparently want a £16 million permanent transfer.
2. Thomas Ince (Mail) – Possible

Former Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge has finally completed his much-mooted move to Liverpool on a “long-term contract”. The 23-year-old’s move – at a reported cost of £12m – paves the way for Demba Ba to join Chelsea, after the Blues triggered his release clause earlier today.
Today’s early business sees striker Angelo Henriquez move from Manchester United to Wigan on loan until the end of the season. The 18-year-old Chilean international has so far been unable to break into Fergie’s first team since joining from Apertura in the summer.
Also leaving Manchester United is young striker Joshua King, who is off to Blackburn Rovers after a successful loan spell. He made two competitive appearances for United, including coming on as a substitute against Galatasary in the Champions League. The 20-year-old is contracted to 2015, with the option of an extra year.

According to BBC Sport, Liverpool are closing in on a £12 million deal for Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge.
The 23-year-old England forward has been forced mostly to keep the bench warm at Stamford Bridge this season and with Chelsea rumored to be interested in Ecuadorian striker Radamel Falcao, Sturridge’s future looks set to be away from Chelsea.
The former Manchester City player has only played in seven league games for the London club, scoring one goal. Sturridge has been somewhat neglected by new boss Rafa Benitez, with the forward failing to make an appearance under the new Chelsea manager.
With Liverpool striker Andy Carroll being loaned out to newly promoted side West Ham, and with the club missing out on Spurs striker Clint Dempsey at the end of the summer, Liverpool have been forced to rely solely on Luis Suarez up top. If the deal for the forward is to be completed,...

Are Liverpool set to bring in a whole new strike-force in January to put their poor summer’s transfer dealings behind them?
According to the Mail Online, Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers has taken significant steps to securing deals for both Daniel Sturridge and Thomas Ince, and the former Swansea man will move early to get the club’s business done quickly in the New Year.
Chelsea man Sturridge – who has seen his first team opportunities limited, despite the stuttering form of Fernando Torres – is expected to cost Liverpool around £12million, while former Liverpool player Ince, who they sold for just £250,000 18 months ago, is likely to cost around £6million from Blackpool.
A permanent deal for Sturridge would come not long after Liverpool almost signed him in August, before the player stated he didn’t want to move on loan – but Liverpool remained interested, and they are now moving close to getting...

I usually like The Huffington Post, but sometimes they can get appallingly sensationalistic. Three decades after Natalie Wood's death in late November 1981 — ruled an accidental drowning — new stories have been coming out regarding What Actually Happened. Now, The Huffington Post quoting something — "a sex secret" — found in The National Enquirer? And, to boot, under the heading "Natalie Wood Death: An Alleged Affair With Christopher Walken Is Revealed." That's pretty low. Rumors of an affair between Wood and Walken, the two stars of visual effects master/director Douglas Trumbull's Brainstorm, have been floating around since the early '80s. Other rumors have Walken dating Robert Wagner, Wood's husband. Others yet, have a WWW triangle: Wood, Walken, and Wagner all rolled up as one. Although anything could have happened, it makes little sense that various people — including one with a book out — would finally be revealing the truth in 2011 about...

Director Peter Bogdanovich.
Interviewing Peter Bogdanovich for the April 2002 issue of Venice Magazine was a thrill for me. Like Francis Coppola, John Frankenheimer, and William Friedkin before him, Bogdanovich was one of those filmmakers whose one-sheets hung on my bedroom walls growing up. Plus the fact that he himself had a renowned career as a film historian and interviewer of his own childhood heroes, such as John Ford, Howard Hawks, Orson Welles, and dozens of others, made our talk a real feast.
Not long after the article was printed, I received a letter with a New York City postmark. The note enclosed said simply: “Dear Alex, thanks for doing your homework so well, and thanks for the good vibes. All the best to you of love and luck, Peter Bogdanovich.”

Don Murphy's Angryfilms is teaming with Bellport Pictures' Carol Lewis to make "Slide," a fictional indie drama featuring Jimi Hendrix being written by R.H. Greene, who also will direct.
"Slide" tells the quirky story involving a legendary Hendrix "lost weekend" in the late 1960s. The story revolves around two gangsters, desperately trying to get away from a mob boss they double-crossed, who inadvertently kidnap Hendrix, then at the height of his career and drug addiction. Along the way, Hendrix ends up teaching one of the gangsters about honesty, and Hendrix learns to clean up his act.
For Lewis, a longtime casting director whose credits range from "Kalifornia" to "Nacho Libre," the approach is similar to the one taken in "Cat's Meow," the Peter Bogdanovich-directed movie she produced that fictionally looked at the death of Thomas Ince and the events of yacht excursion with real-life personalities William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies.
