After a partial lifting of travel restrictions in early October, South Africa is now fully open for business, with international film and TV productions resuming in time for the Southern Hemisphere’s busy summer season.
The new measures allow entry for all foreign travelers who can provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test within 72 hours of departure, a decision that was welcomed by members of the country’s thriving production services sector. Domestic production was allowed to resume as early as May, giving the industry a chance to prepare the necessary health and safety measures once international shoots were allowed to return.
“Starting production has given us a great opportunity to test, refine and adapt our Covid-19 protocols, and so far so good,” says Genevieve Hofmeyr, of Cape Town-based Moonlighting Films, which has serviced more than 100 international series and feature films, including Warner Bros.’ “Mad Max: Fury Road,” Disney’s...

How can a horse save a life? That’s the drama that Disney+ will explore in its update on the classic “Black Beauty” story, which casts Mackenzie Foy alongside Kate Winslet as the voice of the horse Black Beauty.
Ashley Avis wrote and directed the new take on Anna Sewell’s timeless story that has been adapted for the screen on numerous occasions. This new one finds Black Beauty as a wild horse born free in the American West, only to be rounded up and taken away. She soon forms a tight-knit bond with a spirited teenage girl named Jo, and we see how Jo will do anything to keep them together.
“You’ve gotten closer to that filly in days than I have in weeks. They say a horse picks you,” Jo’s uncle played by Iain Glen says in the trailer. “If I fought for every horse I ever loved,...

Hit drama “Ugly Betty” is coming to South Africa, and will feature the show’s first Black lead.

Borrowing on the tender, comic tone of the hit Colombian telenovela, which has been successfully adapted in 19 territories worldwide, “uBettina Wethu” will mark the first remake featuring a ‘Betty’ who is Black. While cameras are yet to roll on foreign productions lensing in South Africa — with international flights into the country still banned — production of local soap operas and drama series got a restart in May. That’s given the industry time to test its Covid-19 safety protocols before foreign productions return to the country, which is expected to begin sometime this month.
Safety measures include Covid-19 screenings and mandatory mask usage for all personnel on set; rigorous social-distancing enforcement; and regular dialogue with coronavirus compliance officers and health and safety teams. Leading production services companies, such as Cape Town’s Moonlighting Films, have also bolstered their measures to conform with the protocols observed by Hollywood trade unions, such as SAG and the DGA.
South Africa offers foreign productions a 25% rebate on all qualifying local spend, rising to 30% if some post-production is done in the country using a Black-owned company. The rebate...

The world is still reeling from the coronavirus, but the resilient film and TV series production business has begun to move forward again in some locations.
There’s a lot at stake: a recent report endorsed by the Assn. of Film Commissioners Intl. shows that in 2019, global expenditure on production reached an estimated $177 billion. The report notes that high-water mark would have been exceeded in 2020 factoring in rising production volume had Covid-19 not slowed and in most cases stopped production around the world. The report shows a 70% average decline in production over the first six months of 2020.
TV drove the numbers in production, where the number of series available in the U.S. doubled between 2011 and 2019 from 266 titles to 532.37, according to the Spi Global report. The number of feature films produced worldwide increased by 10% between 2014 and 2018, with the biggest growth in that sector coming from China, India and South Korea.

Disney+ has acquired “Black Beauty,” a contemporary adaptation of Anna Sewell’s classic 19th-century novel, from Constantin Film, and the movie will premiere on the streaming service later this year, the company announced on Wednesday.
The film stars Oscar winner Kate Winslet (“The Reader”) as the voice of “Black Beauty” and stars Mackenzie Foy (“Interstellar”) as Jo Green; Iain Glen (“Game of Thrones”) as John Manly; and Claire Forlani (“Meet Joe Black”) as Mrs. Winthorp.
“Black Beauty” centers on a wild mustang born free in the American West. When she is captured and taken away from family, her story intertwines with that of 17-year old Jo Green, similarly grieving over the loss of her parents. The two slowly develop a bond that is built on love, respect and mutual healing.

That's right, sidewalk shitters! Even though Universal's Death Race 2 hasn't even left the starting line, it looks as if the studio that horror saved is looking to offer up a trilogy!
According to Movie Hole, based on the initial worldwide reception to Death Race 2 (releasing in most territories over the next few weeks) the studio’s home entertainment division has put Death Race 3 into development.
Believe it or not, there's been a lot of positive word of mouth surrounding the prequel. Then again, is it really that hard to make a better film than Paul Anderson did based on the same material?

According to Movie Hole, based on the initial worldwide reception to Death Race 2 (releasing in most territories over the next few weeks) the studio’s home entertainment division has put Death Race 3 into development.
Believe it or not, there's been a lot of positive word of mouth surrounding the prequel. Then again, is it really that hard to make a better film than Paul Anderson did based on the same material?

For the life of me I'll never understand what that phrase means. I mean, why would anyone shit on the sidewalk, and how come it's used in a way that would imply that shitting on said pavement would in a manner of speaking show someone else who's boss? Being that Death Race 2 is a prequel, maybe we can finally get all this cleared up.
Speaking of which, get ready to dig on three clips and a behind-the-scenes look with Danny Trejo!

I seem to be in the minority when I say that 2008’s Death Race was a complete and utter waste of time, however somebody must have been listening, as the completely unwarranted sequel appears to be heading straight for a bargain bin near you!
Death Race 2, a completely unnecessary prequel to the original film (which starred Jason Statham) has an ok cast by all accounts. Starring Luke Goss, Ving Rhames and Sean Bean, the film is directed by Roel Reiné and has already begun principal photography. Check out the official press release below for more:

Death Race with Jason Statham was ok. I was hoping for a Cannonball Run type movie where the participants Had to go out of their way to run over people like in the original for points. Instead we got a bunch of dudes racing around in a prison yard. But it was still pretty action packed for what we were given. Here's to hoping the prequel goes the way of the original. In a David Blaine inspired effort to promote their newest series Crusoe, NBC will build a giant treehouse in Midtown Manhattan in anticipation of the show's October 17 debut. The treehouse will be located on Broadway and 51st Street.

During the event, polls and contest giveaways will take place, and series stars Philip Winchester (Crusoe) and Tongayi Chirisa (Friday) will make appearances.

Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo has signed to play the lead in South African drama "Skin", based on the true story of the birth of a black baby named Sandra Laing to white parents during the 1950s.
Directed by Anthony Fabian, "Skin" is produced by Margaret Matheson and Genevieve Hofmeyr. The movie, a co-production between Elysian Films, Bard Entertainment and Moonlighting Films, is scheduled to shoot in May 2007.
The project was developed by Anthony Fabian through his banner Elysian. Sandra Laing's biography, "When She Was White", is set to be published by Miramax Books in the U.S. in April this year.
The Little Film Company is repping worldwide sales here during the EFM and is showcasing the film to international buyers.
The film follows Sandra's thirty-year journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation, as she struggles to define her place in a changing world, the producers said.
Okonedo was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar in 2004 for her role in "Hotel Rwanda".
Little Film chief Robbie Little described "Skin" as an emotionally engaging film "that should captivate audiences with its raw portrayal of race relations in apartheid controlled South Africa and the stark realities for a young black woman brought up there in the 1950's."
In addition to "Skin", The Little Film Company's sales slate at the EFM includes war thriller "Stone's War", the documentary "Blindsight", horror flick "The Eye 3" and the crime thriller "The Protege".
