Kolkata, Oct 29 (Ians) Atk Mohun Bagan grabbed the first round bragging rights as they beat arch-rivals East Bengal 2-0 to register their fifth successive win in the Kolkata Derby in the Indian Super League, here on Saturday.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Title: The ABCs of Death Director(s): 26 of them Starring: Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Dallas Malloy, Ivan Gonzalez, Kyra Zagorsky The ABCs of Death is a gruesome group effort. 26 directors, most of them unknown to the casual cinema fan, from all over the world were sent a letter from the alphabet. Based on their respective letter, they have to come up with a short film – no longer than 5 minutes – that depicts a word; which then will become the cause of death to a character in their film. For example, if you drew the letter C, the title of your film could be “Death by ChapStick.” If it [ Read More ]

120 companies looking to buy films will attend the American Film Market for the first time, part of the more than 750 distributors from 75 countries that have registered for the only stand-alone theatrical feature film market (all others are attached to festivals) October 31-November 7 in Santa Monica. The new grindhouse factory from Tinseltown’s fringes, Blanc-Biehn Productions, grabbed some buzz from Cannes today, as word circulated about their link-up with infamous French horror film director, Xavier Gens. The Divide brought these two take-no-prisoners talents together earlier this year. Now, in true indy-grit fashion, they’re taking a family approach to generating a trio of high-intensity noir films.
It’s a natural bond. Biehn, his partner Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, and Gens share a frontier spirit when it comes to film-making: Grab a colony of folks you trust and head into the wilderness on your own dime.
The results should be appropriately wild.
The Farm is the first in this slate of tragic tales. It’ll sport many of the cast members from The Divide, Biehn and Gens riding that family dynamic’s energy as far as it can take them. That’s a good call, as The Divide demanded...

Michael Biehn, Danielle Harris, Jennifer Blanc, Michael Eklund, Ivan Gonzalez and Courtney B. Vance are all set to star in "Hitman" director Xavier Gens' "The Farm" for Chiller Film says THR.
Biehn plays a broken man who must fight his inner demons to save his farm from a greedy corporation and an inhuman force.
The first film in a planned series of grind house movies, shooting on the project begins early next year in Canada after Gans finishes the upcoming "Cold Skin" and a French gangster film for Gaumont.

It's a few years now since the whole Grindhouse debacle, but it seems that Michael Biehn is still feeling the Planet Terror vibe. He's just embarked on a partnership with his recent Divide director Xavier Gens to produce no fewer than three gnarly new grindhouse horror projects. The first will be Gens' The Farm, starring scream queen Danielle Harris. Don't expect much in the way of groovy trains or Adge Cutler-type cider consumption: this Farm is about a "veteran" (of what?) returning to his Texas home, only to find himself immediately fighting again. His new war is on three fronts: against his innner demons, the greedy corporation that wants his land, and also a "horror that threatens to devour the American heartland". The Tea Party? If only.Harris (Stakeland, Hatchet 2, various Halloweens, including Rob Zombie's) is obviously no stranger to horror, and she'll co-star with Michael Eklund and Ivan Gonzalez,...

A city is burning, bombs are dropping and our hero passively looks on before being dragged to safety. This clichéd set-up is well-worn within the apocalyptic genre and as the opening of Xavier Gens' (Hitman, Frontiers) last feature, it acts as an effective ruse to lower expectations. Thankfully, the rest of The Divide generally manages to steer clear of such clichés, resulting in both thought-provoking and shocking viewing.
After a nuclear explosion, the residents of a New York apartment block seek refuge in the building's basement that conveniently doubles as a bomb shelter. Having madly rushed into the basement crushing fellow tenants en-route, nine survivors are forced to tolerate each other's company with no imminent rescue. The door dividing the living and the dead is their only means of escape but is also likely to lead to radiation poisoning.

Director Xavier Gens delves into the basement of humanity for the post-apocalyptic horror of The Divide. Here’s our review of a singularly grim film…
If The Divide were a big-budget, high-concept Jerry Bruckheimer movie, the pitch to Hollywood executives might be something along the lines of “It’s The Lord Of The Flies in a New York basement”. Like William Golding’s novel, The Divide is about the murkier, primal area of human nature, and it’s probably the bleakest genre film you’ll see all year.
Director Xavier Gens wastes no time in laying his premise out. Nuclear bombs land on Manhattan, and seconds before they’re obliterated by the firestorm, a handful of tenement building residents scramble into a basement for protection. Fortunately for them - or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it - the building’s twitchy superintendent Mickey (Michael Biehn) has made provision for such a disaster,...

Xavier Gens proved he loved intensity with Frontier(s) and he set out to show it wasn’t a fluke with the bomb shelter mayhem of The Divide. The movie focuses on a group of blast survivors who are safely trapped in their apartment basement with supplies that threaten to get used up before true help can arrive. It stars Lauren German, Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia, Courtney B. Vance, Iván González, Michael Eklund with Ashton Holmes and Rosanna Arquette. Now, you can own the flick on DVD/Blu-ray. What do you have to do? Well, we’re going to randomly pick 7 winners and toss them into a basement for as long as it takes. The last person standing wins. It’s sort of our version of that contest where you have to keep touching a truck or something in order to win it. Only bloodier. Just kidding. We can’t legally do that (yet), so here’s...

I have an interest in nuclear war. Well, I have an interest in stories about nuclear war, to be more precise. I’m a big fan of films such as When the Wind Blows and television such as Threads. One of the books I’m currently reading is a biography of Robert Oppenheimer. So when I read the synopsis of The Divide, I was immediately interested. In the film, nuclear warheads are dropped on New York City and a handful of people manage to take shelter in the basement of a tower block, a sanctuary that becomes a prison and then a madhouse, as Very Bad Things unfold.
The nuclear war aspect is really just a hook on which to hang the real focus...

The Divide is a film from first time scriptwriters Karl Mueller and Eron Sheean. The visual display is handled by French filmmaker Xavier Gens (Frontier(s)). The reviews of this film have been ambivalent and after watching the movie this reviewer knows why. Recently released theatrically January 13th, The Divide is a somber film that highlights the worst of humanity's qualities: depravity, humiliation, sexual dominance and perversion. This film took the spring out of this reviewer's step and left the jaw slack as characters turn on characters in horrible fashion.
This film is not uplifting. However, at least the film's story offers some mystery early as a nuclear strike on New York City goes unexplained. Could the writers...

Title: The Divide Directed by: Xavier Gens Starring: Lauren German, Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia, Michael Eklund, Ashton Holmes, Rosanna Arquette, Courtney B. Vance and Iván González Well, this is January. The month of January is historically known in the movie world as a dumping ground for new releases. Studios and distributors take their movies that have been sitting on the shelf for years or movies quality that is at the very least questionable and release them at the beginning of the year so audiences can quickly forget about them. But strangely, January 2012 is a bit different, movies like “The Grey” and “Haywire” have that high quality you might find...

Director: Xavier Gens Writer: Karl Mueller, Eron Sheean Starring: Lauren German, Milo Ventimiglia, Michael Biehn, Ashton Holmes, Peter Stormare, Rosanna Arquette, Courtney B. Vance, Michael Eklund The Divide opens to frantic chaos as an unspecific nuclear strike slams New York City. The panicked residents of a highrise apartment building stampede to the basement in a last-ditch effort to escape the horrific destruction above. Luckily for them (debatable), their cigar toking super named Mickey (Michael Biehn) has fashioned the basement level of the building into fallout shelter. Micky immediately takes the alpha role since they are all on his turf and orders that the reinforced metal door be sealed shut with nobody allowed to come or go until they are sure that radiation is no longer an issue. In no time confrontations begin to emerge as "the mouthy insane one" Bobby (Michael Eklund), "the tough guy" Josh (Milo Ventimiglia), and "the...

Imagine looking out of the window of your high-rise apartment building and seeing a blast of nuclear hellfire coming your way. After having your breath taken away, what would you do? In a post 9/11 world, your reaction should come naturally: You would get the heck out of Dodge.
You make for the stairwell and are greeted by fellow tenants making their way to the ground floor. As you reach the ground floor, the door flies open, exposing you to heat that feels like the force of a thousand suns. Oh crap, now what? Head for the basement! Lucky for you, there is a basement, and only a few of your fellow tenants have made for the basement door. By the skin of your hair you force your way into the basement. You have made it to salvation as the metal door shuts behind you.
You are safe, but for how long?...
