Women in film in 2023 were getting younger. When it came to all female characters that had speaking roles in last year’s top grossing movies, fewer than half were from women over the age of 40.
The latest report from Dr. Martha Lauzen’s famous Celluloid Ceiling study — this year called “It’s a Man’s (Celluloid) World” — found that on the whole, female characters were significantly younger than their male counterparts.
According to the study, which looks at the top 100 grossing movies released at the domestic box office in the year, 33 percent of female characters were in their 30s, but that number dropped precipitously to 15 percent for those in their 40s. Only 7 percent of female characters were over 60. For men, that decline didn’t happen until they got to age 50. The percentage of male characters in their 30s was the same as male characters in their 40s, at 28 percent, but...

The Screen Actors Guild announced their annual nominations this morning and there are some minor plot twists. They rejected May December in totality (Todd Haynes movies do continue to struggle with non-critic based movie awards bodies), embraced Nyad just like the Globes did, and threw new question marks around both Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. No major plot twists this year, though, like an I Smile Back, Woman in Gold, or St. Vincent.
The SAG Awards will stream live on Netflix this year – a first! – as we’ve long suspected awards shows will move to streaming like everything else has. Comments and a full list of nominees after the jump…...

Netflix has released the brand new trailer for Nyad. Nyad tells the remarkable true story of athlete Diana Nyad who, at the age of 60 and with the help of her best friend and coach, commits to achieving her life-long dream: a 110-mile open ocean swim from Cuba to Florida.
In their Telluride Film Festival review, Variety’s Peter Debruge says: “it’s the private glimpses of vulnerability that make “Nyad” so effective, along with the personal scenes between Diana and Bonnie — dramatized moments when no cameras were present in the real world. Audiences want to see Diana Nyad succeed, but the pleasure of the experience comes from watching actors become these characters. No matter how tricky such feats must have been to re-create, you get the impression that everyone involved was having a blast.”

“Nyad” tells the true story of athlete Diana Nyad (Annette Bening), who, at the age of 60, decided to attempt swimming the 110 miles between Cuba and Florida — a goal she failed to achieve three decades earlier when she first tried. The journey ended up taking four years and multiple attempts, which created an interesting problem for screenwriter Julia Cox: How does one tell a compelling cinematic story that is by its nature both repetitive and relatively solitary?
“It’s an unusual sort of sports story,” Cox told IndieWire. “It’s naturally kind of episodic, and although there’s a team around her, the event itself is mostly one woman in the water with her support boat.” Cox began with Nyad’s memoir, which she found rich in detail but also overwhelming in terms of the amount of material. “I had to chisel this thing down to a manageable shape, and...

Ellen Kuras thought she knew what Kate Winslet could do.
She’d been the cinematographer on “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” But she was not prepared for the mature Winslet who, since 2013, has pushed the biopic of World War II Vogue photographer Lee Miller into production and offered Kuras the chance to helm her first film feature after directing television and documentaries (Oscar-nominated “The Betrayal”).
Independently financed, “Lee” had its world premiere at TIFF and is seeking a North American distributor. An Oscar campaign for Winslet would be in the sights of the buyers.
No question, Winslet was driving the train as actress and producer. “She was very involved in the film from A to Z,” said Kuras, “from all the research to us having extensive conversations about who we wanted to cast, talking about who could be in different roles.” Winslet reached out to ask actors to consider joining the independently financed production.

The season may have ended, but “Yellowjackets” isn’t done with winter. After devising their own methods for ritual sacrifice and eating their own to survive, the stranded teens just lost their home and are in for many more grueling months in the wilderness — to say nothing of the inner turmoil they’ll carry as adults. The adult Yellowjackets may have just escaped criminal charges, but they’re not out of the woods either, and down a Natalie (Juliette Lewis) moving forward.
Buckle in, “Yellowjackets” fans, because it’s going to be a while before these characters return. Until then, here are 10 burning questions after the “Yellowjackets” Season 2 finale that we hope to see answered in Season 3.
1. Who and what is the Antler Queen?
Looking back, the main reason anyone believed that Lottie (Courtney Eaton) was the Antler Queen was because the “Yellowjackets” audience expected Season 1 to answer that question.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Yellowjackets” Season 2 Episode 9, “Storytelling.”]
Long ago, in the quaint winter of 2022, Lottie (Courtney Eaton) killed a bear and offered its heart up as sacrifice to the wilderness on “Yellowjackets.” She told her friends to spill blood and said “let the darkness let us free.”
That is decidedly not what happened.
Despite Lottie’s best efforts in both past and present, “darkness” (also known as savagery and trauma) fully cloaks the stranded teens of the series, following them well into their tormented adult lives. In a season that has gone from bad to worse, “Storytelling” is the definitive destruction of hope, light, and sanctuary.
After languishing for most of the season — or at least moving conspicuously slower than the parallel ’90s flashback — the present-day timeline steers most of the action in “Storytelling,” written by Ameni Rozsa and directed by Karyn Kusama. Every character and storyline converges at Lottie’s (Simone Kessell) forest compound,...

Season 2 of Showtime’s hit genre series “Yellowjackets” is ready for another dance at this year’s Emmys, after premiering to critical acclaim and record-breaking numbers for the network. The plans for the acting submissions have changed slightly from the first season, Variety has learned exclusively.
Breakout star Sophie Nélisse, who plays the teenage version of Shauna, will now join her adult counterpart Melanie Lynskey in the lead actress drama category, with hopes of landing a nomination. The pair will be joined by co-stars Tawny Cypress and Juliette Lewis, who portray the adult version of their characters, Taissa and Natalie, respectively.
The thriller show tells the story of a girls’ soccer team as they struggle to survive in the woods following their plane crashing while on their way to a tournament. The tale flashes back and forth between two periods: One, the aftermath of a crash, with the surviving members fending for themselves; the other,...

One of the jobs that the general public doesn’t pay that much attention to — but probably should — is that of the cinematographer. If you think a film looks gorgeous and you’re able to get swept away by what you’re seeing on the screen, that’s all thanks to this man or woman’s work behind the scenes. Turns out, though, you can even see these folks showcase their talent on social media.
Since the role of cinematographer is often referred to as the director of photography — shortened to Dp or Dop — it only makes sense that we hone in Instagram as that’s one popular online platform dedicated specifically to photos. Let’s take a look at 16 of the cinematographers who are utilizing Instagram to showcase more of their work and giving us a glimpse of...

Fresh off its impressive haul at the Golden Globes the weekend, "The Revenant" is poised to nab yet another statuette with a nomination for a Directors Guild of America Award.
The DGA announced its annual slate of honorees for outstanding directorial achievement on Tuesday, and "Revenant" director Alejandro G. Inarritu was among the five nominees. Inarritu also won the DGA award last year, for 2014's "Birdman," and with the new momentum from "The Revenant"'s Globes wins, the director looks like an early favorite to repeat.
The rest of the nominees were rounded out by Tom McCarthy ("Spotlight"), Adam McKay ("The Big Short"), George Miller ("Mad Max: Fury Road"), and Ridley Scott ("The Martian"). In addition to those names, the DGA also included a new category this year, honoring directors who helmed their first feature films in 2015.

Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu brings the legend of Hugh Glass to the screen with The Revenant, an epic adventure set in the unchartered 19th century American Frontier. Immersing audiences in the unparalleled beauty, mystery and dangers of life in 1823 America, the film explores one man’s transformation in a quest for survival.
Part thriller, part wilderness journey, The Revenant explores primal drives not only for life itself but for dignity, justice, faith, family and home.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter, 20th Century Fox has released a new featurette where the cast and filmmakers give a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s story.
Of the director, DiCaprio says he gave Iñárritu his full trust. “What I really love about Alejandro’s approach is that he’s an old-school filmmaker who believes in the art of creating something on the screen — and he’s also kind of an outsider,...

There's been lots of talk in the trades recently about the brutal conditions -- and alleged manic whims of director Alejandro G. Inarritu -- that cast and crew had to suffer through while shooting "The Revenant," the ambitious new project starring Leonardo DiCaprio. But according to the actor, things got even weirder (and grosser) than the public had previously heard.
In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, DiCaprio discussed the infamous shooting conditions, and while he held back on blaming Inarritu or crew members for any reported difficulties during the production, he did share some graphic details about his own process on the film. The actor revealed that shooting scenes like the intense bear attack near the flick's opening gave him the biggest challenges of his career -- and that was nothing compared to all the stuff involving dead animals.

The first trailer for Leonardo DiCaprio and director Alejandro G. Inarritu's collaboration "The Revenant" is here, and what it lacks in dialogue it makes up for with some breathtaking imagery -- and lots and lots of heavy breathing.
DiCaprio stars in the period drama as Hugh Glass, a trapper who, according to the film's official logline, "must navigate a hostile environment, a brutal winter, and warring Native American tribes in relentless quest to survive and exact vengeance on the men who betrayed him." That's not all necessarily clear from this clip, though the "hostile" and "brutal" descriptors are right on the money; the world in this film looks rough and uninviting, and is teeming with chaos and violence around every turn.
It's all seen more or less from Glass's point of view, and the thumping score gives way to the character's quick, labored breathing as the action intensifies and the clip climaxes.

Chicago – I can’t decide which is worse: the “fake deep talk” from Jeff Bridges in “Seventh Son” or the “angry whisper talk” from Eddie Redmayne in “Jupiter Ascending,” which also opened on Friday. Both speech impediments are ugly fish out of water, both films are getting punished by critics and both are underperforming at domestic box offices.
Ironically, both movies have also also been quite delayed and now we see why. “Jupiter Ascending” opened two days ago after initially being slated to open in July 2014. That film’s push back was justified to finish its extensive special effects, which “The Matrix” creators did without remembering to fix its laughable acting and weak story.
Rating: 2.0/5.0

That film’s push back was justified to finish its extensive special effects, which “The Matrix” creators did without remembering to fix its laughable acting and weak story.

20th Century Fox has released new first look photos from Alejandro González Iñárritu’s (Birdman) next movie, The Revenant.
Co-written with Mark L. Smith, the film is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Punke, and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy and Will Poulter.
Deep in the uncharted American wilderness, trapper Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is severely injured and left for dead by a traitorous member of his team, John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). With sheer will as his only weapon, Glass must navigate a hostile environment, a brutal winter, and warring Native American tribes in relentless quest to survive and exact vengeance on Fitzgerald.
Based on a true story, shooting on the movie by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (Birdman, Gravity) began in September. The film has a release date of December 25, 2015 (limited); January 8, 2016 (wide).

Once again, dear readers, I have to begin a column by apologizing for an unplanned absence. I’ve been very busy with work and family stuff lately, and I didn’t have the time to deliver the quality columns you’ve come to expect and deserve. But on a much happier note, this week’s much-delayed edition of Trailer Trashin’ takes another look at my most anticipated film of the year, Godzilla.
Premise: An epic rebirth of Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.
My take: As I’ve previously stated in this column, I’ve been a huge Godzilla fan since I was a kid. After the debacle that was the 1998 Roland Emmerich film, I had resigned myself to believing that I’d never get to see a...

Hollywood is being good to us this December, dear readers. This past weekend brought us The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – which is a lot of fun, and I definitely recommend it – and this week sees the release of American Hustle and Saving Mr. Banks, both of which I’m quite looking forward to. And in even more good news, this week’s Trailer Trashin’ column is one I’ve been looking forward to writing for a long time, because we finally have our first look at my most anticipated movie of next year – Godzilla.
Premise: An epic rebirth of Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.
My take: As I’ve written about before in this column, I have loved Japanese monster movies ever since I was a kid.

In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the crime and poverty that is now rampant throughout the land. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces – but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

The 3D action-adventure tale, which is performing exceedingly well overseas, features Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, and Vanessa Hudgens. Next in line at no. 5 was the Denzel Washington / Ryan Reynolds actioner Safe House, with $3.1 million. Depending on how The Vow, Journey 2, and Safe House perform on the weekend proper — as a kiddie flick, Journey 2 has the edge — there could be some switching around when final weekend figures are released on Monday. Safe House topped the Us/Canada box-office chart last weekend. At. no. 6 was This Means War, a box-office disappointment starring Water for Elephants' Reese Witherspoon,...

Tom Hardy, Chris Pine, This Means War New entry Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3D is vying with holdover The Vow for the number one spot at the North American on Friday, Feb. 17, according to early, rough figures found at Deadline.com. Each movie is expected to gross somewhere around $7.1-$7.2 million. Official studio estimates for Friday will be released Saturday morning. As per Deadline's sources, Spirit of Vengeance should collect a so-so $24.5 million at 3,174 locations over the four-day Presidents Day weekend. That's about $10 million less than Ray Subers predicted at Box Office Mojo. The action flick stars Nicolas Cage, who hasn't had much luck at the box office of late even though his recent movies are no less atrocious than Cage's prior hits such The Rock, Gone in 60 Seconds, National Treasure, or the original Ghost Rider. Cage's co-star in Spirit of Vengeance is Idris Elba. Starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum,...

Chicago – With Julie Christie as Grandma in this this new version of a familiar red cloaked fairy tale, it certainly gives a whole new meaning to the familiar “better to eat you with” routine. Amanda Seyfried gives an old fable a new spin as the title character in the Blu-ray and DVD release of “Red Riding Hood.”
Blu-ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
With enough symbolism for both literature and psychology classes to chew on, this version of Red is given a luscious treatment by veteran director Catherine Hardwicke (”Twilight”). Where it fails is in the story treatment, a bland mush of longing stares and fancy speeches, coupled with the mysterious wolf character, which doesn’t get its proper due, even as the focus of the story.
Amanda Seyfried is Valerie, soon to don the red hood. She lives in a middle ages village called Daggerhorn, crippled by their fear of the wolf, a...

Promised to Henry (Max Irons) in an arranged marriage, Valerie (Amanda Seyfried), a young woman from the medieval village of Daggerhorn, plans to run away with her lover, the woodcutter Peter (Shiloh Fernandez). Chicago – Catherine Hardwicke, who only directed the first “Twilight” and none of the following franchise films because she felt rushed and financially constrained, has cleverly figured out how to make another “Twilight” under the guise of the name “Red Riding Hood”.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
Even “A”-lister Gary Oldman – who has curiously accepted the role of god’s good werewolf slayer – deserves better than to be grouped with this film’s teen-targeted talent. While he’s certainly the film’s highest-caliber artist, Oldman’s presence is nonetheless disappointing and still only scratches the surface of saving this film flop.
In a time when vampires and their foes are all the rage, Hardwicke’s modern-day “Red Riding Hood” transforms the Big Bad Wolf into a werewolf. (The earliest, 17-century version of the beloved story used an actual wolf whereas later versions have used ogres or a “bzou,” which we know as a werewolf.

Those wondering if that dawn will ever break somewhere in Rio, where Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) spend their honeymoon, will have to go on wondering until Summit Entertainment makes some sort of official announcement one way or the other. The latest on Breaking Dawn on RioFilme president Sérgio Sá Leitão's Twitter page was a brief Oct. 22 tweet that read: "No news about Breaking Dawn for the time being." That's the way it's been for the last two months or so. Directed by Bill Condon, and also starring Taylor Lautner, Breaking Dawn is currently being shot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where, among countless momentous happenings, Robert Pattinson not only rented a bike, but actually went pedaling. Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart in David Slade‘s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse It remains unclear whether Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, to be directed by Bill Condon, and starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, will be shot in Rio de Janeiro, where Bella and Edward spend their fateful honeymoon. The problem — or at least the chief problem — is reportedly tied to security issues in that city and the homonymous state in which it’s located. The latest on that from RioFilme’s director/president Sérgio Sá Leitão — in a tweet dated Sept. 6 — is that Breaking Dawn will "apparently" be shot in Rio, "though that hasn’t been confirmed, yet." Xavier Samuel as Riley, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse The Twilight Saga: Eclipse grossed $8.78m on Day 8, once again topping the North American box-office chart, according to Box Office Mojo. Directed by David Slade, and starring Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner Eclipse fell below the $10m-per-day mark for the first time since opening day. Attendance on Wednesday was down a relatively small 16.9% from the day before. (Nearly every movie on the top twelve chart had double-digit drops.) To date, Eclipse has collected $195.73m domestically, which means it’ll be crossing the $200m mark some time today — a day earlier than I expected. Also in the Eclipse cast: Bryce Dallas Howard, Kellan Lutz, Xavier Samuel, Dakota Fanning, Peter Facinelli, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone, Ashley Greene, Elizabeth Reaser, Julia Jones, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Michael Welch, Anna Kendrick, and Billy Burke. Dakota Fanning as Jane of the Volturi, Eclipse M. Night Shyamalan‘s critically (and ethnically) panned The Last Airbender was no competition for the Twilight Saga: Eclipse‘s Kristen Stewart-Robert Pattinson-Taylor Lautner combo. Directed by David Slade, Eclipse grossed $24.2m on Thursday, July 1. The Last Airbender scored an estimated $16.35m at 3,169 locations in North America, according to Box Office Mojo. Eclipse‘s two-day total is a staggering $92.7m — an amount particularly impressive because this third installment of The Twilight Saga opened in the middle of the week. Eclipse will cross the $100m mark sometime today, and will have collected anywhere between $180-$200m by Sunday, according to various estimates. In addition to Pattinson, Stewart, and Lautner, Eclipse features Bryce Dallas Howard, Peter Facinelli, Xavier Samuel, Elizabeth Reaser, Anna Kendrick, Dakota Fanning, Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, Billy Burke, and Jackson Rathbone. Yes, the Twilight series is an anomaly, and it’s unlikely another franchise could replicate its special brand of audience fervor, but let’s be clear: The film’s Wednesday opening, which garnered $68.5 million, just out-grossed Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen — without blowing anything up. Now the question is: Just how much will Eclipse gross over the six-day July 4th weekend? My guess is $200 million. It’s a huge number, but thanks to the holiday, there...

Chicago – Easily the best entry in the franchise, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” finally allows those of us unfamiliar with the books by Stephenie Meyer to understand why the saga of the vampire, the wolf, and the sullen girl in the middle has become an international phenomenon. With actual performances from Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart instead of mere teen melodrama and tight, blockbuster pacing by director David Slade, “Eclipse” stands ashen head and furry shoulders above “Twilight” and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Don’t get me wrong. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” is too flawed to completely convert those of you turned off by the rising fame of Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, and Kristen Stewart and there’s nothing I can say to the people who own anything that says “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob” that would convince them that these movies still aren’t as good as they should be.
