It seems almost inevitable that Rooney frontman, Coppola scion, and Jason Schwartzman brother Robert Schwartzman would eventually make a movie, and he makes his directorial debut with an earnest, musically themed take on the Mrs. Robinson myth with “Dreamland." Co-written with Benjamin Font, the film stars the endearing, almost cherubic Johnny Simmons as Monty Fagan, a struggling piano player who becomes entangled with an older lover/benefactress, Olivia (Amy Landecker), while trying to sort out his life. Monty, peddling piano lessons for $25 bucks a pop, dreams of opening his own piano bar, but he settles for a replacement gig filling in at the swanky La Petit Bel Ami hotel. It’s where he meets Olivia, an older woman who actually wants to have sex with him, unlike his longtime girlfriend Lizzie (Frankie Shaw). Their mojo has fizzled, partially thanks to her mom (Beverly D’Angelo), whom they live with. So when Olivia turns up,...

Tom Daley burst onto our radar at the 2012 London Olympic Games, where he won the Bronze Medal in diving for Great Britain, and won our hearts with his exuberance and charisma.
Late last year he released a video that quickly went viral around the globe, in which he spoke about a life-changing experience. “Come this spring, my life changed — massively — when I met someone. They make me feel so safe, happy, and everything just feels so great. And that someone is a guy.”
That someone turned out to be Oscar-winning writer Dustin Lance Black, and last month he publicly came out as gay.
Today is his 20th birthday, so let’s celebrate with a cavalcade of gifs that explain who he is, and why we love him. From these slices of life, we can ascertain a few certainties …

This Berlin flew by! A good overview is that of Screen Daily and if we're lucky, you can read it here without subscribing. My own activities flowed from two sources:
1) Education: I taught and led tours of the market for Berlinale's Talent Campus Meet the Experts, for Deutsche Welle Akademie Film Festival Workshop, and for Ina Sup, a TV, film and new media school based in France and linked to the French National Audiovisual Institute (Ina). This is the most rewarding work, seeing what talent is coming up in our world, seeing ideas take hold as the students learn about the market.
2) Our Consulting: Another pillar of our company, aside from blogging and professional education, is strategic planning with filmmakers. This Berlinale was very intense and very energizing for my partner Peter Belsito and me, with Beyond the Moonwalk having found a berth for international sales representation with Steve Arroyave's Arrow Entertainment and a U.S. distribution commitment, and more actively involving, with Donna Deitch's The Catcher, where a series of meetings with top German and Canadian producers and sales agents gave the project the momentum of a race horse bound for first place!
What follows are my impressions of various other Berlin events as they passed by -- ever so quickly -- but still with enough eye-catching power to capture my attention in the first place.
I was happy to see Jeff Lipsky and Adopt Films' co-managing executive Tim Grady cleaning up with 3 acquisitions; no time to waste anymore as the third Bingham Ray memorial pointed out to those who have the mind to realize the message. Sister (L'enfant d'en haut) by Ursula Maier (Isa: Memento, Swiss rights with FilmCoopi), I hear is A+, Paolo and Vittorio Taviani's Caesar Must Die (Cesare deve morire) (Isa: Rai Trade) won the Golden Bear, and Chris Petzold's Barbara, all in Competition.
American indie works-in-progress have been granted a second chance to screen for European indie distributors (EuropaDistribution) at the upcoming Paris Film Festival in June. I have been invited to be on the jury of "U.S. in Progress" and am thrilled at the prospect. I was honored to have been invited to be on the jury in Wroclaw at the American Film Festival in November as well, for the first edition of this chance for U.S. filmmakers to win post-production and cash prizes. This is where the film Now, Forager was picked up by fledgling international sales agent, the only international sales agent in Poland, New Europe Sales founded by Jan Naszewski [jnaszewski At gmail.com] and Anja Sosic [anja At NewEuropeFilmSales.com]. The film went on to screen at Rotterdam Film Festival. Even hotter news will be forthcoming from Moma and The New York Film Society's New Directors/ New Films about one of the films at the Aff's "U.S. in Progress". If you missed it in Poland you will be able to see it in New York this April!
I was lucky to see two films during the market and after the market closed, this last Saturday and Sunday, when I caught some more films I was unable to see earlier due to my "real" work. Of the films I saw here in Berlin, here are my unique :) comments for what they're worth.
Children of Srikandi (Panorama) is a very personal account by a female filmmaker collective in Indonesia on what it means to be a lesbian in their society. The sweet intimacy of the film overrides its non-professional veneer (the "filmmakers" were all non-professionals). In fact, this could serve as a template for other non-professionals who want to tell their stories. Schools come to mind as possible candidates for this sort of filmmaking, as does my own pet project, The Literacy Project. The Indonesian contingent here in Berlin was interesting and sociable as they met their audience and fans. They were hosted by Berlin based producers Laura Coppens who is a doctorate student in ethnological studies in Zurich and Angelika Levi, doc filmmaker (My Life, Part 2 about growing up Jewish in Berlin).
Bergman & Magnani: The War of the Volcanos. This invitation-only work in progress with Wide House uses a unique way to show the emotion filled and the biggest jet-set love scandal of all times, the story of Roberto Rossellini, Anna Magnani and Ingrid Bergman as Rosellini and the volcanic Anna Magnani ended their relationship after making Volcano (1950) and the married Ingrid Bergman and Rossellini began theirs with the filming of Stromboli (1950), the name of the second volcano on this Aeolian Island which has been in almost continuous eruption for 2,000 years. The visuals of their stories are illustrated entirely with the scenes from movies starring them as they enact the real life emotions and the commentary of the doc. I am most interested to see how well this technique succeeds.
Paolo and Vittorio Taviani's Caesar Must Die (Isa: Rai Trade) is a moving illustration of the transformative power of art as hardened criminals in an Italian prison rehearse and perform Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. The the 80 + year old Brothers Taviani deserve recognition for their artistic excellence. I can't argue with Mike Leigh and the jury's judgement except that on my emotional meter, Rebelle (War Witch) was the real winner.
Rebelle (War Witch) by Kim Nguyen (Isa: Films Distribution) should have won the Golden Bear. The Silver Bear for Best Actress was awarded to Rachel Mwanza, but this film is so deeply moving on the most primal levels, maintaining its African roots while touching our most sensitive emotions of parents, love, rape, pregnancy and infants as they are experienced by a female child soldier from ages 12 to 14. It should also win Best Foreign Language Film in next year's Academy Awards. Produced by the industry vets Marie-Claude Poulin and Pierre Even, it is yet another feather in the cap of the the Canadian film industry.
Dieter Kosslick observed that with 15 Competition titles confirmed at the time Screen International interviewed him, “both thematically and geographically, we have many films coming this year from Asia, and particularly China and Indonesia. There is also an interesting focus on France this year, beginning with the opening film Farewell My Queen (Les adieux a la reine) (Isa: Elle Driver) and going through all of the festival’s sections. Moreover, we have two French jury members [Francois Ozon and Charlotte Gainsbourg] in the International Jury.“ Eight titles selected to date have German majority or minority participation, so German filmmakers and (co-)producers will again enjoy a record presence in the Competition on a par with 2011’s tally of eight films involving German directors or German production partners." He also notes Competition films' trending toward "times of upheaval and new departures... with many films coming from Africa and Arab countries". My observation of the 23 Competition films finally selected is that the nostalgic look back at European aristocracy and top social tiers (A Royal Affair, Bel Ami, Farewell My Queen) and its mores stands in stark contrast to today's upheavals of families and children (Childish Games, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Postcards from the Zoo, Just the Wind, Mercy, Shadow Dancer, Sister, Rebelle, Home for the Weekend, Jayne Mansfield's Car, Coming Home). Seven other films continue the theme of social upheavals: Tey - which deal with childhood memories of Senegal experienced by an American, Captive about Phillipine hostages, Barbara an Eastern German looking to move to the West, Caesar Must Die about prisoners finding art in their sequestered lives, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate about upheavel during the Ming Dynasty, White Deer Plain about upheavel towards the end of Imperial China, The Flowers of War about the upheavel of China by the Japanese in World War II. The exceptions, Tabu and Meteora, deal with love, the Saving Grace.
Two major disappointments were Steven Soderberg's Haywire (Isa: Mandate) and Stephen Elliott's Cherry. Both about women, they left me puzzled with what the plot was about. Pretty, well done and negligible.
This Berlin Diary Part 2 will continue after I work on my new and soon-to-be launched website! I have spent an entire day on this blog and I still have much more to write!

The story of a billionaire orphan who dresses as a bat to protect his city has beaten the story of a billionaire who dresses as a robot while he protects Earth in a ranking of the most popular DVDs released in Australia this year.

Maryland Del. Emmett Burns, Jr. has backed off his demand that Brendon Ayanbadejo be forced to be silent on the subject of marriage equality, and his reasoning sounds awfully familiar. "Upon reflection, he has his First Amendment rights. And I have my First Amendment rights. … Each of us has the right to speak our opinions. The football player and I have a right to speak our minds." For the record, Ellen DeGeneres has offered to fly Ayanbadejo to California to tape her show this week.

The Summer Movie Season comes to a close this weekend and we're now two-thirds of the way through 2012. Today is a good time to look back at the films that have hit cinemas thus far this year and reflect on what you have enjoyed, what you've loved, what met your expectations, what disappointed you, and what left you vomiting on the sidewalk.
Below is my own take on the year so far from the few films that have clicked with me, the ones I had various issues with, the painful experiences I wouldn't do again, and the stuff I've missed or haven't caught thus far which I'm determined to see before the year's out. My general feeling sadly is that it has been a rather piss weak year thus far.
What are your favorites? Please leave your responses in the comments below:

Full Metal Jacket (25th Anniversary Blu-ray Book) According to Blu-ray.com this is essentially the same Blu-ray that was released before in terms of audio and video quality with its lone "new" features being "an hour-long documentary and a smartly crafted 48-page DigiBook with photos from Matthew Modine's personal collection." If that sounds like enough for you to double-dip than have at it. I will say this, however, you can [amazon asin="B000UJ48UO" text="click here"] and get it on Blu-ray for $12 cheaper, you'll just be missing out on those new features, which will likely be included on the 30th Anniversary release and then some.

The Grand Illusion It's interesting to see the film with spine #1 over at the Criterion Collection coming to Blu-ray for the first time from another company as Studio Canal has brought over their previously released European version of the excellent La Grande Illusion to Blu-ray here in the States. I have not yet had a chance to watch this release but word is that it looks great and the supplemental material looks strong. I previously owned this title only in my [amazon asin="B000I5YUE4" text="The Essential Art House - 50 Years of Janus Films"] collection, but I love how Studio Canal and Lionsgate have teamed to continue to bring some classic foreign titles home to the U.S. Although, compared to the number of titles they've released overseas, they still have a lot of catching up to do.

It’s Monday, so we all know what that means! Yes, it’s time for another rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s another packed week, with plenty of movies waiting to take you money, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, July 23rd 2012.
Pick Of The Week
Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season One (Blu-ray)
Star Trek: The Next Generation – The First Season has been retransferred from original film elements to produce stunning high-definition images, including amazing visual effects that have been painstakingly recreated from the source material, creating before/after results that fans will love. The six-disc Blu-ray set also features a wealth of exclusive bonus material, such as archival footage, a gag reel, and an inside look at taking The Next Generation to the next level of high-definition.

★★☆☆☆ Kristen Scott Thomas is fast becoming the go-to actor of choice for central roles in French/multi-national film productions entrenched in intrigue, lust and moral degradation. Sadly, as with several of her last outings (with 2011's The Woman in the Fifth and 2012's Bel Ami easily the worst two offenders), Scott Thomas often appears to be far above the material she is asked to work with. The same is sadly true of Lola Doillon's In Your Hands (Contre toi, 2010), given the ominous role of counter-programming against Batman behemoth The Dark Knight Rises (2012).

It's been a while since my last Twi-Bites column. There have just been so many Twi-hard topics that have required more in-depth analysis. However, with the recent release of the "Breaking Dawn-Part 2" teaser, "Twilight" stimuli (Twi-uli?) is starting to flow fast and furious.
Not being able to pick just one thing to talk about, I've decided it's time to bring back Twi-bites and easily distill all of this month's Twi-hard–worthy news into easy-to-swallow nuggets. Imagine them wrapped with bacon and stuffed with cheese for maximum enjoyment.
Drowning in New Vampires
Unless you've been trapped under parking-garage concrete (sorry, "True Blood" reference), you've seen the new "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" teaser that Summit released on June 20, a.k.a. Edward Cullen's 111th birthday. Predictably, it looks epic. I mean, it has to after "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" suffered the worst reviews of any "Twilight Saga" installment and any of director Bill Condon's films (however,...

A slew of notable new indie films entered the marketplace this weekend, with Film District's "Safety Not Guaranteed" and Brainstorm Media's "Dark Horse" the only ones to manage per-theater-averages over $10,000. They topped the likes of Fox Searchlight's "Lola Versus" and IFC Film's "Peace, Love and Misunderstanding" (while Magnolia's "Bel Ami" did not report their estimates yet), but were overshadowed by the continuing success of Focus Features' release of Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom." In its third weekend, "Kingdom" once again managed the best per-theater-average of any film in release, and looks like it will turn into quite the crossover hit for Focus as it expands more in future weekends. Check out the full rundown below. The Debuts: "Safety Not Guaranteed" (Film District) On 9 screens, Film District's Sundance Film Festival pick up...

Prometheus – Rt – Trailer
It’s finally here, this will please Kevin. I’m also looking forward to this film, it’s not really a sequel, and not quite a prequel…but it’s got common threads to the Alien franchise. Or is it just Alien and not Aliens? Oh hell, it looks awesome anyways. It was filmed entirely with 3D cameras so hopefully it won’t look like post conversion garbage the likes of which people who watched Clash of the Titans can tell you about. Did I mention Charlize Theron is in it?

Once again, our friends in the U.K. have a head start on us as Ridley Scott's Prometheus finally hits theatres across North America this weekend. Will it bring in some decent coin without bearing the Alien name? We shall see. It goes head to head with the animated sequel Madagascar 3, which is getting surprisingly positive reviews. In select theatres we also have a handful of interesting indie releases including the time travel comedy Safety Not Guaranteed, Todd Solondz's Dark Horse, and in select theatres in Canada, David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis. What will you be watching this weekend? The summer season is in full swing, with one record-breaker already setting the bar, box-office wise. But yet again, this month mostly brings quality limited releases, including a few festival favorites and a film from a director who had all-time success last summer. Also note that the first matinee would certainly be on our list, but word is that Paramount cut up the original film, so we’ll have to wait and see. Check out the list below and let us know what you’re looking forward to.
Matinees: The Loved Ones (6/1), A Cat In Paris (6/1), The Do-Deca-Pentathlon (6/6), Dark Horse (6/8), Bel Ami (6/8), Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap (6/15), The Woman in the Fifth (6/15) and Neil Young Journeys (6/29)
10. Take This Waltz (Sarah Polley; June 29th)
Synopsis: A happily married woman falls for the artist who lives across the street.

Over the weekend in Australia, Zac Efron was snapped on the balcony of his hotel room shirtless, digging around in his pants, and later, after a shower, he may have displayed one perfectly shaped, tanned butt cheek to the photographers. Or not, according to some. But let's keep the fantasy, Ok?
Anne Rice, fresh off a hilarious interview with Stephen Colbert, posted an Easter message to the gays on her Facebook page. "Happy Easter, Gay People of the World: you have indeed risen in the last few decades from centuries of persecution and oppression. May this be a great holiday for you all wherever you are. You are winning the battle for equal rights. And your victory over discrimination and hate is a victory for all oppressed persons. Happy Easter!"
In the UK, The Sunday Times took the anti-marriage position, putting itself in opposition to The Times, which came out for equality last week.

It was slammed by Us film fans and initially hidden from UK critics, but The Devil Inside's tale of exorcism has proved an instant hit at the box office
The winner
It enjoys a measly 7% Fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, and scored 18/100 at Metacritic. When it opened in the Us, it suffered the rare ignominy of being rated F by film fans measured by market research firm CinemaScore. In the UK, it avoided the slings and arrows of newspaper critics by the simple expedient of not screening to them until the day of release. But none of this mattered too much at the box office, with exorcism horror The Devil Inside (rumoured production budget: £630,000) dethroning John Carter (rumoured production budget: £158m) from the chart summit. With a decent £1.99m opening, this was enough to land it more than £400,000 ahead of action comedy 21 Jump Street.

Cut will save pre-booking cinema goers 70p per ticket, but pay-on-the-door customers face a price rise
Cineworld has become the first cinema chain to remove all booking fees for film goers who buy tickets online, but is raising the price for those who buy tickets at its cinemas.
The cut will save pre-booking cinema goers the 70p previously charged per ticket, to a maximum of £4.20 per booking. The company is also offering a 10% discount to those who register for MyCineworld, an online service which allows it to make personalised offers on the basis of the films you have watched.
But customers who prefer to buy their tickets on arrival at the cinema will pay 6% more.
Ticket prices vary according to the film, type of ticket and location of the cinema, but someone buying a ticket for John Carter in 3D in Wandsworth on Friday night will pay £11.98 instead of £11.30, while...

This past week we've seen multiple release date changes and announcements for movies like Bel Ami, The Cold Light of Day, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and World War Z, but now it's CBS Films' turn to set up their schedule. According to Box Office Mojo, the studio has officially announced release dates for Gambit, Seven Psychopaths and The Words. First up, Gambit, which is based on a script by Joel and Ethan Coen and directed by Michael Hoffman, will not be arriving in 2012 as originally hoped, but instead will arrive early next year on January 11, 2013. Despite the fact that the movie is still nearly a year away, the choice of date already gives the project still competition, as both Scary Movie 5 and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters are also set to bow on that Friday. The film, a remake of the 1966 Ronald Neame movie, stars Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz...

If your cinematic calendar needs some updating, then box office mojo has got a couple of new dates to announce. Dimension Film’s blood splattered fish film Piranha 3Dd, Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina, Lola Versus, and Henry Cavill’s Cold Night of Day all have release dates of their own.
While Piranha was originally scheduled for a November 23rd, 2011 release date, Dimension felt that the movie wasn’t setting itself up for the same box office success its predecessor had, so now instead of a Turkey holiday, the film will go up against Snow White and the Huntsman on June 1. J ohn Gulager directs a cast that includes Danielle Panabaker, Ving Rhames, David Hasselhoff, Katrina Bowden, Christopher Lloyd, and Gary Busey.
Then there’s Joe Wright’s Anna Karenia, his follow up film to Hanna. That movie will be hitting theaters on November 9, where it will be the alternative...

The UK box-office may only be 4% down on last year (which with things as they are going is a blessing in disguise) but when one considers that this week heralds the arrival of a $250 million Disney production you’ve got to wonder where it all went wrong.
Here’s our look at the UK box office this week and my stab at answering that question.
The Dubious Winner – John Carter
With a weekend intake of £1,960,414 from an actually quite low 456 sites may have temporarily won the day but what John Carter bound to lose is a shed load of cash. Where did it all go wrong? There was $250 million dollars, 26 months in production before release and a supremely confident Andrew Stanton at the helm. Well is obvious isn’t it? All of the above.

Going into this year’s Berlinale you could be forgiven for thinking that all the A-list talent was presiding over the jury. It’s an impressive roster: Mike Leigh is at the head, accompanied by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi (last year’s Golden Bear champion for A Separation), Hollywood star Jake Gyllenhaal, French auteur Francois Ozon (Potiche), Dutchman Anton Corbijn (Control), and Charlotte Gainsbourg. By comparison the competition line-up seemed extremely obscure. Whilst Cannes and Venice tend to lead with premieres from established directors, the Berlin Film Festival continues its recent tradition of backing more obscure auteurs.
Out of the directors in the main competition only Italian veterans the Taviani brothers (with drama-doc hybrid Ceasar Must Die) and actor-turned-director Billy Bob Thornton (Jane Mansfield’s Car) came with anything like a reputation. Most of the films come via relative unknown talents with few previous features to their name, such as...

First, The Cold Light Of Day gets a somewhat poorly-photoshopped poster complete with Sigourney Weaver being cool and not looking at an explosion. Next up is Bel Ami, "the story of Georges Duroy (Pattinson), who travels through 1890s Paris using his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth." And finally we find the poster for Hysteria, "a romantic comedy about the invention of the vibrator." Spoiler: it was for medical...

After the initial play-in, wild card and Sweet 16 rounds, only eight movies remain in the MTV Movie Brawl 2012. Stunning upsets ("Woman in Black" over "Snow White and the Huntsman"!) and down-to-the-wire finishes ("Cosmopolis" beat "Bel Ami" by three votes!) dominated the Sweet 16, and we expect the results of the Elite Eight to be just as dramatic.
Voting reopens today, with polls closing at 11:59 Pm Est on Monday, January 16. That's right, you have five full days to push your favorite movie into the next leg of the competition. But if you thought the decision-making was difficult before, you haven't seen anything yet. Only eight films remain in the brawl for it all... and the choice is up to You.

The 41-year-old actress – who was previously married to Gary Oldman and Ethan Hawke – reunited with financier Arpad Busson last year following a split in November 2009 after two years of dating and is more content than ever in her personal life.
She said: "I have something I would really like to express about my love life. I’m happier with it now than I’ve been in many, many years. Yes I’m trying to have as peaceful a personal life as possible."
The 'Bel Ami' actress also admitted she felt "awkward" until she was 35 and her career eventually helped her feel comfortable with herself.
She explained to the new issue of Britain's Harpers Bazaar magazine: "Acting was a place where I could fit in with those who didn’t fit in.
"People who grow too fast usually have a very long awkward phase. Mine ended around 35."

Everyone loves movie trailers; we can’t get enough of them here in The City of Films. It’s an art form that stands alone from the film itself and has a remarkable power to move us. Trailers can give us chills, laughs, goose bumps and some even anger us. We can’t always post them all, so here’s where we play catch up; watch More Trailers:

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? [Rec]³ Génesis Trailer This is the kind of trailer that gets me all jolly. Director/writer Paco Plaza has found a niche that works, and has worked for a few films.

I've now been working for Cinema Blend for more than two years and I can honestly say that I've never seen a week like this before. While the year is winding down in preparation for both Christmas and New Years celebrations, Hollywood has been pumping out trailers non-stop. Since Monday we've seen trailers for 21 Jump Street, The Dark Knight Rises, Wrath of the Titans, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Goon, Prometheus and Bel Ami. But if you think that means we're slowing down, you've got another thing coming. The newest trailer for Underworld: Awakening has been sent over to us via Screen Gems. Check it out below! Marking Kate Beckinsale's return to the franchise, Underworld: Awakening sees Selene enter a world at war. The humans have discovered the existence of both vampires and lycans and have begun a full-on assault to eradicate them all. It is left...

Hey Rob -- you are usually the most-friendly, self-effacing, cool -with- fame celebrity in Hollywood. You need to stop freaking out at photographers! For more photos of Pattinson, check out X17online.com. Please Rob, don't become another Sean Penn or Chris Martin from Coldplay. Keep your fists to yourself when the paparazzi take your picture and thank the Lord, that, that is one of the least important downsides of fame. Yesterday, Monday, Sept. 26th you were snapped leaving the ICM talent and management agency in La and you almost wound up and punched the photographer taking your photograph. "I was just standing there, taking his picture , not saying anything, not getting too close and he just went off. He clenched his fist and got ready to hit me, but his friend told him to stop and calmed him down," the photographer told the Y17 photo agency. Rob, please -- you are usually so gracious.

Linda Christian, international actress and Tyrone Power's second wife, died Friday (July 22) in Palm Springs, California. Christian, who was 87, had been suffering from colon cancer. Linda Christian was born Blanca Rosa Henrietta Stella Welter Vorhauer on November 13, 1923, in Tampico, Mexico, to a Dutch oil executive and his German-Mexican wife. As a young girl, she traveled the world with her parents, according to reports eventually becoming fluent in seven languages. Discovered by Errol Flynn while in Acapulco, Christian moved to Los Angeles where she began her film career in bit parts in Hollywood movies of the mid-1940s. Labeled "The Anatomic Bomb" by Life magazine, Christian eventually progressed to supporting roles in a handful of productions, among them Robert Florey's Tarzan and the Mermaids (1948) and Richard Fleischer's The Happy Time (1952). Leading roles, however, eluded her, while a reported seven-year MGM contract led nowhere. Though the first Bond girl...

Farewell Betty Ford, one of the most honest and upfront First Ladies the United States has ever known. From her professed intent to share a bed with President Ford in the White House to her struggles with alcohol to her battle with breast cancer, she was always an open book and did wonders for progressive causes — all from a Republican perspective. Can you imagine that today?
