Ferguson), Mark (Ames McNamara), Neville (Nat Faxon), Becky (Lecy Goranson), and Dan (John Goodman). “We are gathered here today to commemorate Jackie’s retirement from the Lunch Box and the smooth transfer of power to Harris,” Becky announces in the sneak peek, above. A lot goes into a good performance – from research to blocking to facial expressions and beyond. But at its core, an acting performance comes down to reading lines of dialogue on a piece of paper. Many actors do their level best to read the lines as written. Some other actors, bless them, like to get a little more creative.
Television and film are filled with fascinating line readings from actors. Whether it’s an emphasis on an unusual syllable or just an outright scream, certain performers are able to make dialogue feel particularly vibrant. As pop culture travelers ourselves, we’ve come across many interesting line readings over the years. What follows are some of our favorites. Be sure to share yours in the comments as well!

For any television series reaching its 100th episode, looking back is a given, but there aren’t many shows with a 35-year history like ABC’s “The Conners,” the sitcom following the blue-collar family with an affinity for getting knocked down by life’s struggles while making us laugh along the way. “It’s just lucky, I guess,” says John Goodman, who plays patriarch Dan Conner. “Now all of a sudden, it’s 100 episodes. I can’t believe how fast the time went by, but I guess that’s just because I’m getting old.”
We first met the Lanford, Ill., clan on Oct. 18, 1988, when “Roseanne,” named for brash standup comedian Roseanne Barr, premiered on ABC. The cast included Roseanne’s big-hearted husband Dan (Goodman), their three salty young children Becky (Lecy Goranson), Darlene (Sara Gilbert) and D.J. Hot off his first Emmy win, Nick Offerman will pop up on The Conners when the ABC sitcom returns for Season 6 on February 7. Offerman appears to be playing an author, judging by the book Jay R. Ferguson’s Ben Olinsky holds in a new Season 6 teaser shared by TVLine. “Are you family?” Offerman’s character asks John Goodman’s Dan Conner later in that promo. “I’ve never seen these people before in me life,” Dan responds, faking a Cockney accent, as Katey Sagal’s Louise looks on uneasily. Offerman is best known for playing grumpy government employee Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation. Since the 2015 finale of that NBC comedy, the actor has starred in the TV shows Devs, Pam & Tommy, and The Resort. Offerman won an Emmy Award this month for his guest-starring part in The Last of Us’ debut season. In his Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series acceptance speech,...

Over the weekend, "The Bear" viewers on social media separated into two camps: people who ship Sydney and Carmy - that is, want them to be together romantically - and people who don't. The latter are pretty mad that anyone is in the first group to begin with. Off the top, I'll come clean that I am also anti-Sydney-Carmy romance. While Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White have incredible chemistry, I think the show is about how their connection comes to life in the restaurant instead of in a romantic context.
However, as the weekend and discourse went on, I found myself mentally defending Sydney-Carmy shippers. Some said that to watch the show and hope for the characters to get together romantically is to watch wrong. Shipping two characters, they said, means your brain is poisoned by romance. But the problem, I think, is not that people are silly for...

Roseanne spinoff The Conners aired its fifth season finale on Wednesday (May 3) night, and it provided fans with a surprising update on Johnny Galecki‘s beloved character David. The episode saw Darlene (Sara Gilbert) and David’s son Mark (Ames McNamara) attending his high school graduation, teasing a potential reunion with his father, who hasn’t appeared on the show in some time. However, the episode revealed that David hasn’t bothered with Mark or his sister Harris (Emma Kenney) in the past four years. Ultimately, Mark decided that the only father he wanted at his graduation was his stepfather, Ben (Jay R. Ferguson). Does that mean fans will never see David again? According to executive producers Bruce Helford and Dave Caplan, they reached out to Galecki to appear in the finale, but the stars just didn’t align. “We even approached [Galecki] for this episode, to be honest with you,...

“The Conners” has never shied away from tough topics that have burrowed themselves deep into the lower-middle class experience, and they don’t plan on starting to anytime soon. On this week’s episode of the ABC comedy, the family finds themselves at the crossroads of an economic issue that could wipe out any progress they’ve made to catch up.
The episode revolves around Jackie’s mother, Bev, whose memory is worsening and her need for round-the-clock care has become dire. But, as seen in the exclusive clip at the top, the outrageous cost of healthcare for an aging parent leaves them with few options. And Jackie’s ever-present bitterness for her mother comes in clear focus.

Good and not-so-good seem to go hand-in-hand for Lanford, Illinois’ working-class family at the center of The Conners, and that hasn’t changed in Season 5. The Conners is losing one of its most beloved cast members.
TV Line reported Monday that Michael Fishman has departed the ABC series ahead of its fifth season.
The news is somewhat surprising.
Fishman originated the role of D.J. Conner on Roseanne back in 1988 before returning for the revival back in 2018.
When ABC canceled the series after cutting ties with Roseanne Barr, Fishman joined the cast of the Roseanne-less follow-up, The Conners.
The star hasn't had as big of a presence as you would expect, given his series regular status.
TV Line notes that Fishman has only appeared in 36 episodes out of 71.

“The Conners” star Michael Fishman is leaving the ABC sitcom ahead of Season 5, Variety has confirmed.
Fishman played DJ Tanner in the series, reprising the role he played for 10 seasons on “Roseanne.” Exact details on how Fishman will be written out of the show are currently under wraps, but it will supposedly leave the door open for him to return. Jayden Rey, who plays DJ’s daughter Mary in the show, will also not be back as a series regular, though she will appear in a guest star role.
John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, Jay R. Ferguson, and Katey Sagal will all return for the new season. Sagal joined the show in its first season as Louise, a former high school classmate of Dan, Roseanne, and Jackie who eventually becomes Dan’s new wife.
Fishman first began playing DJ Tanner in 1988 in the second episode of “Roseanne.
