This very traditional chamber murder mystery starring David Farrar and Geraldine Fitzgerald has been beautifully restored by Studiocanal and bears the original U.K. title The Late Edwina Black. When the sickly wife Edwina dies in bed the bitter housekeeper accuses the husband and another very attractive servant; all the Scotland Yard Inspector need do is stir the pot, and paranoid suspicions take over. Is Edwina’s spirit still present in the house? The housekeeper thinks she communicates through a wind chime by the window . . .

Django is back.
The coffin-dragging, quick-draw gunslinger character introduced in Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 Spaghetti Western classic, which inspired dozens of sequels, spinoffs and tributes, most famously Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, has finally arrived on the small screen.
Sky’s 10-episode Django, which has its world premiere at the Rome Film Festival on Sunday, Oct. 16, is billed as a reimagining not just of Django, but of the Western genre itself.
Set, like the original film, in the period after the American Civil War, the series combines plot elements from both Django and its official 1987 sequel Django Strikes Again, themes from Tarantino’s film — particularly the role of Black people and freed slaves in old West — as well as adding several original ideas of its own. Even Django’s famous weapons-packed coffin makes an appearance, though in a very different setting than the original.

★★★★☆ David Evans' My Nazi Legacy (2015) opens with a potent challenge - to imagine what it would be like to grow up as the child of a mass murderer. This hard proposal is just the beginning of what is a harrowing, complex documentary that expertly explores the legacy of the Holocaust through the intertwining history of three men. Philippe Sands is a human rights lawyer, who when researching into the Nuremberg Trials discovered that a son of a Nazi governor was still alive.

Russell T Davies’ Cucumber is a raucously funny relationship drama that highlights how narrow the rest of TV’s representation is…

You know how it goes: you wait years for a brilliant adult Russell T Davies drama, and then three come along at once.
Getting proceedings underway is Channel 4’s Cucumber - a raucously funny and wistful portrait of gay middle-age sex, relationships and frustration. Following that is E4’s energetic half-hour Banana, which swings the focus over to gay Generation Z. Finally comes talking heads-meets-speculative fiction web series, Tofu.
The British love of innuendo being alive and well (as illustrated by C4’s cheeky, colourful promo campaign for the shows), everyone’s calling it a threesome. A flexible threesome at that, one designed to be watched separately or together as the viewer chooses - according to Davies, the first episodes of Cucumber and Banana...

Last night the 2014 Emmy Award winners were announced with "Breaking Bad" taking home top honors with five wings including Outstanding Drama Series, followed by "Modern Family" with three wins including Outstanding Comedy Series. FX programs "American Horror Story: Coven" and "Fargo" each took home two awards including an Outstanding Miniseries win for "Fargo". Meanwhile, new shows such as "Orange is the New Black" and "Silicon Valley" went home empty handed and for all the fanfare it received in its first season, including 12 Emmy nominations, "True Detective" only took home one win, that being for director Cary Joji Fukunaga". Personally, I don't give a lick about the Emmys, it's right there with the Grammys in terms of worthless awards shows for me. It's a show wherein people must nominate themselves and while most award shows are no better, this one is down there near the bottom for me. So, with that said,...

Breaking Bad’s amazing final season always meant that it was a likely winner come awards season. However, the debut of the critically acclaimed True Detective earlier this year did leave many wondering whether it might rob the end to Walter White’s story of one final sweep of prizes at last night’s Emmy Awards.
As it turns out, Breaking Bad would end up being rewarded for those amazing final episodes, though True Detective did earn a very well deserved award for director Cary Joji Fukunaga (who helmed all eight instalments).
The UK was represented by Sherlock, and that too did exceptionally well, walking away with Emmys for Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and writer Steven Moffat. Looking at the results, it’s hard to imagine anyone being too upset with the results, though many Game of Thrones fans won’t be happy to see that it was again snubbed.

Because it's NBC's turn to air the Primetime Emmy Awards this year, and because the Peacock would understandably rather air its lucrative Sunday night NFL package in September, the ceremony will take place in late August again. And as an added wrinkle, this year's ceremony will actually happen on a Monday, August 25 at 8 p.m., with Seth Meyers hosting. Between now and then, Dan and I will be making our picks for both who should and will win many of the major categories — if you're wagering, keep in mind that Dan tends to be much better at predicting the winners than I am, but also that he was just as flummoxed as I by last year's winners like Jeff Daniels, Merritt Wever and Bobby Cannavale — continuing with our look at the comedy and drama series directing categories. The 2014 Emmy Award nominations were announced today and led by HBO's "Game of Thrones" with 19 total nominations. New show "Fargo" scored 18, followed by "American Horror Story", "Breaking Bad", The Normal Heart and not too far down the line "True Detective" with 12. The one show I love and continue to watch, "Hannibal" received zero nominations, but then again, I have never paid too much attention to the Emmys, primarily because people have to nominate themselves, something I've never understood. "Game of Thrones" 19 "Fargo" 18 "American Horror Story: Coven" 17 "Breaking Bad" 16 "The Normal Heart" 16 "Saturday Night Live" 14 "House of Cards" 13 "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" 12 "Downton Abbey" 12 "Orange Is the New Black" 12 From a network perspective, leading the pack was HBO, coming in just one nomination shy of a 100 and it wasn't even a close race with CBS coming in second with 47. HBO 99 CBS 47 NBC 46 FX Networks 45 ABC 37 The top shelf nominations are listed...

Downton Abbey, Season 4, Episode 1
Directed by David Evans
Written by Julian Fellowes
Aired Sunday, 5th of January on PBS
The surprise death of Matthew Crawley that closed the book on Downton Abbey’s third season not only left a gaping hole in the show’s role call, but it threw the door wide open for future storylines. However, Downton’s residents have notoriously hesitated when it comes to the prospect of change, and the same might be said for the show’s creator, Julian Fellowes, who indicates in the season four opener that rather than use this tragedy as a jumping off point for bold new directions, he prefers to retrace the characters’ steps over extremely familiar territory. But redundancy aside, this episode also has refreshing moments of truly progressive thinking and genuine tenderness.
Matthew’s absence is at the core of nearly all the goings-on of the fourth season premiere.

Exclusive: Christopher McQuarrie is back steering the feature adaptation of the celebrated UK miniseries Unforgiven. He has signed on to write, direct and produce alongside Graham King, whose Gk Films has tried for several years to turn the mini into a film and got McQuarrie to return. Unforgiven is a drama-thriller about the intrigue and violence that unfolds when a woman completes a 15-year prison stretch for the murder of two policemen who’d come to evict her family from their farmhouse. Her hope is to live quietly and reunite with her troubled younger sister, but she unwittingly becomes a target for revenge. Suranne Jones played the lead in the mini, which was written by Sally Wainwright and directed by David Evans. McQuarrie was originally going to write the project after King bought it in 2010, and he was going to write it as a potential star vehicle for Angelina Jolie.

Downton Abbey, Episode 3.6
Written by Julian Fellows
Directed by David Evans
Many have lodged the complaint that Downton Abbey has established a trademark habit of introducing a problem one week only to resolve it by the following episode. The slow burn is not exactly a technique the show has mastered. Occasionally, the odd storyline receives some extra time to breathe. And this particular edition sees the last of the simmering conflicts come to a boil. Sadly, the lid gets slammed down on most of them before any serious consequences spill out.
Ever since Matthew bailed the family out of the financial sinkhole Lord Grantham created with his bad investment, a blow-up has been brewing between father-in-law and son-in-law. However, Robert’s long awaited chagrin at having the last vestiges of his pride stripped away amounts to little more than one or two heated scenes and some subsequent huffing and pouting.

Scott Frank is set to adapt 2009's British miniseries Unforgiven for Gk Films partners Graham King and Tim Headington. Deadline reports that The Lookout director will rewrite and direct the project. Christopher McQuarrie penned the initial draft as a potential vehicle for Angelina Jolie, but then left the project to direct Tom Cruise in One Shot for Paramount. At this time it is not known who will star in the film, Jolie never formally signed on to star.
Unforgiven is about "a woman’s attempt to rejoin society after she serves a 15-year prison stretch for the murder of two policemen. The tragedy happened after the policemen came to evict her family from their farmhouse. Her hope is to live quietly and reunite with her troubled younger sister, but the paroled woman is targeted for a revenge campaign by two sons of one of her victims." Angelina Jolie is one busy gal. After announcing that she’ll be writing, producing, and making her feature-film directing debut on a Bosnian War-set love story in the near future, she’s also boarded the revenge thriller “Unforgiven” for producer Graham King and his Gk Films. Based on the 2009 British mini-series of the same name starring Suranne Jones in the lead, the King remake of “Unforgiven” would find Jolie playing a woman recently released from prison after a 15-year stint for the murder of two policemen who had tried to evict her from her farmhouse. Now a free woman and hoping to start over with her troubled younger sister, Jolie’s character finds redemption harder than expected when one of her victim’s two sons set their sights on making her pay even further for her crimes. No doubt the little brats have picked on the wrong gal. David Evans...

Angelina Jolie is close to land another job after wrapping up production for "The Tourist". The actress is said offered a lead role in "Unforgiven" which is based on 2009 British miniseries of the same title, but she reportedly won't commit to the project until the screenplay is completed.
Deadline Hollywood reports that Christopher McQuarrie is currently writing the script for the movie and Gk Films, which recently financed "The Tourist" where Jolie stars alongside Johnny Depp, is the one developing "Unforgiven" film. Graham King, meanwhile, is on board to serve as producer of the drama thriller.

Exclusive: Graham King, who established himself as a producer by doing repeat business with talent like Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Martin Scorsese and William Monahan, is fast developing that kind of relationship with Angelina Jolie. I’m told Gk Films is developing a feature adaptation of the 2009 British miniseries Unforgiven, and Christopher McQuarrie writing a script that’s being tailored for Jolie to play the lead role. Jolie, who next stars with Depp in the Gk-financed Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck-directed thriller The Tourist (Columbia Pictures releases the film December 10), separately announced this week she’ll make her directing debut and produce with Gk’s King and Tim Headington a Bosnian love story she has written. McQuarrie, who just scripted X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2, was one of the writers on The Tourist. Unforgiven is about a woman’s attempt to rejoin society after she serves a 15-year prison stretch for the murder of two policemen.
