Begin Again: Edwards’ Satisfying Sophomore Film Utilizes Walken
Thanks to the overwhelming trend of quirk, cliché, or contrivance evident in most American indie offerings (whether headlined by notable celebrities or not), one could easily assume the worst of Robert Edwards’ sophomore effort, One More Time, a rather blandly titled father/daughter relationship drama starring Christopher Walken and Amber Heard.

At some point, perhaps around the mid-nineties when he banged out roles in films as varied as "Pulp Fiction" and "Excess Baggage," — or maybe when he voiced his need for more cowbell in 2000, who’s to say, really — Christopher Walken entered an actorly realm of self-parody that few stars are ever able to fully escape. What set Walken apart from the pack was the sense that he was in on the joke, that he was happily playing up his cadence and his dancing purely for our benefit, and that it had zero bearing on his actual (and profound) ability to leave that stuff behind when his work required him to do so. Yet that doesn’t dilute the pure pleasure of watching Walken marry those two ideals — the hammy Walken and the serious Walken — into one irrepressibly charming character in Robert Edwards’ darling “One More Time.” Read More: Watch: Christopher Walken...

Title: One More Time Director: Robert Edwards Starring: Christopher Walken, Amber Heard, Kelli Garner, Hamish Linklater, Oliver Platt, Ann Magnuson. ‘One More Time’ gathers a terrific cast to stage the story of a musician’s incongruence betwixt his romantic repertoire and his tumultuous private affairs. A rather familiar tune that does not surprise or entertain. Jude (Amber Heard) is an aspiring rock star who is at crossroads in her life, with no clear path to take. She is relegated to recording commercial jingles and distracts herself with one night stands. Title: One More Time Director: Robert Edwards Starring: Christopher Walken, Amber Heard, Kelli Garner, Hamish Linklater, Ann Magnuson and Oliver Platt People who lead the most seemingly charmed and privileged lives, and have the potential to easily thrive on the endless opportunities that are conveniently presented to them, can often times lead the most troubling and unfulfilled lives. They can squander even the most appealing and favorable chance because they feel undeserving of love and success, after not receiving much emotional encouragement throughout their lives. That’s certainly the case with the professedly privileged young protagonist and her once successful father, who are both so eager to make their mark on [ Read More ]

Sorry, but Christopher Walken isn’t leading a Daft Punk biopic. Rather, One More Time (previously titled When I Live My Life Over Again) is indeed music-related, but instead of Walken donning any sort of robot helmet, the film follows his character as an aging crooner who is attempting to launch a comeback in the industry, recently reunited with his daughter, played by Amber Heard. Directed by Robert Edwards, we now have the first trailer and poster ahead of a release next month.
In their review out of Tribeca last year, THR noted, “Walken is the main attraction here; though the film identifies more with the wayward daughter, played by Amber Heard, it doesn’t make her nearly as interesting as his name-dropping, spotlight-hogging entertainer. The actor’s fans, who get too few chances to see him in this kind of role, should ensure that the likeable but underwhelming pic...

Despite his song-and-dance background, Christopher Walken didn’t fare too well as Captain Hook in NBC’s live staging of Peter Pan. But his turn as a Sinatra-esque crooner in One More Time already looks more convincing, at least based on the trailer. Directed by Robert Edwards, the indie drama follows Walken’s aging musician character as he navigates a rocky […]

Read More: Exclusive: Could Amber Heard and Christopher Walken Be Performing at Next Year's Oscars? No one's speaking voice and cadence is as iconic, or as often imitated, as Christopher Walken’s. Walken's voice, his singing voice more specifically, is on display once again in writer-director Robert Edwards' film "When I Live My Life Over Again," which premiered this past weekend at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. The film co-stars Amber Heard as a young musician named Jude who, after one too many big city problems, heads to the Hamptons home of her father (Walken), an over-the-hill crooner desperately charting his musical comeback. Heard and Walken both sing in the film, and created a charming father-daughter relationship for Edwards’ realistic musical. Indiewire caught up with Walken right before the premiere to chat about singing, dancing and the project that scared him the most. It's wonderful to see you singing in a film again.

Despite one feature film under his belt with 2006′s Land of the Blind (the Ralph Fiennes and Donald Sutherland starrer won the Nicholl Fellowship from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award and landed at Rotterdam, but didn’t gain much traction after that), Robert Edwards isn’t an unknown entity for Sundance programmers. His 2002 docu short, Voice of the Prophet landed at the fest and American Prometheus, a project that hasn’t yet materialized, was awarded a the 2011 Sloan Science-in-Film Initiative Commissioning Grant. It appears that the filmmaker has had several high profile projects that didn’t materialize, but this April, is when he finally got a greenlight. When I Live My Life Over Again sees Christopher Walken, Amber Heard, Kelli Garner, Hamish Linklater, Ann Magnuson and Oliver Platt in a New York city set drama.

It might still be too early to mention the brothers in the same breath as Frederick Wiseman, but the Ross brothers’ filmography to date in 2009′s 45365, 2010′s Tchoupitoulas and perhaps 2013′s River is awe-worthy and awe-inspiring in an observational mode type of manner. A non-secret to SXSW programmers, the brothers who’ve given us Americana portraits set in suburban, dryland and floating bodies of water get some sand in their face with Western. By the looks of it (see pic above), this is in the last stages of being readied with a recent trip to the Sundance Institute and Skywalker Sound Select Independent Filmmakers and Film Composers for September Music and Sound Design Lab for Documentary. It is currently among the finalists for the San Francisco Film Society’s Documentary Film Fund.

Director Ridley Scott is teaming up with Gerard Butler to develop a film project based on the true story of a former British army officer Simon Mann, "who in 2004 put together a band of mercenaries to attempt a coup against the president of Equatorial Guinea. The coup attempt was thwarted in Zimbabwe, where Mann went to pick up weapons. He spent five years in a harsh prison there before being taken to Equatorial Guinea where he was sentenced to 34 years–but spared that sentence when he received a presidential pardon in 2009. His backers –Mann said one was Mark Thatcher, son of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher—disavowed involvement with Mann after the coup failed."
I love a good thriller true story, and this definitely sounds like an interesting one. It's easy to imagine Scott directing a film like this and Butler starring in it. And for clarification Scott has attached...

Ridley Scott and Gerard Butler are looking to team for a fact-based thriller about former British army officer Simon Mann says Deadline.
In 2004 Mann assembled a group of mercenaries to attempt a coup against the president of Equatorial Guinea, but was arrested picking up arms in Zimbabwe.
After five years in prison there, Mann was sentenced to 34 years in Equatorial Guinea but received a presidential pardon in 2009. Mann's backers, including former British Pm Margaret Thatcher's son Mark, disavowed involvement with him after the coup failed.
Butler wants to play Mann while Ridley Scott is attached to both direct and produce. Giannina Facio and Alan Siegel will also produce while Robert Edwards ("The Bomb In My Garden") will write the script. No studio has yet picked up the pitch.

[1] Even as Ridley Scott mulls over helming the "female Lawrence of Arabia" biopic [2] Gertrude Bell with star Angelina Jolie, the filmmaker has signed on to direct and produce yet another project through his Scott Free banner -- this one a fact-based thriller starring Gerard Butler. The 300 star would play Simon Mann, a former British army officer who attempted in 2004 to stage a coup against the president of Equatorial Guinea. If you're not up on your world events, here's a bit of a spoiler alert: Things don't go exactly as planned. More on the project after the jump. Mann led a group of mercenaries in the coup, but was caught in Zimbabwe, where he'd gone to obtain weapons. He was put in prison for five years there, and then was extradited to Equatorial Guinea where he received a sentence for another 34 years. In 2009, however, he was saved by a presidential pardon...

Here are some items in their upcoming slate. Tired of seeing Kiefer Sutherland save the world in the present day? How about we let him end the Cold War for a change? According to Production Weekly's Twitter feed Jack Bauer, Billy Crudup and Guy Pearce have signed on to star in Trust, a Cold War-era thriller written by Robert Edwards. Edwards is a writer and director you've probably never heard of, given that his debut feature, Land of the Blind, went direct to DVD after premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2006. But when Rafe reviewed the film, he called it "a film with an interesting statement on terrorism, fascist governments, and the patriots who get caught in between." Sounds like a guy with the right credentials to make a Cold War movie. We'll be waiting for official confirmation of this casting, but since Production Weekly's Twitter feed has been reliable in the past, it's probably safe to...

A number of spy writers have gone into the business with some firsthand knowledge of espionage, Ian Fleming being perhaps the most famous example. But it's rare to get a guy making the spy movie who has any experience with the real-life counterparts, which is why Robert Edwards is such an exciting guy to watch right now. He'll be adapting John Le Carre's thriller The Night Manager for Brad Pitt's Plan B productions. Edwards, who wrote and directed 2006's Land of the Blind, was an intelligence officer during the Gulf War, meaning he probably has all kinds of secrets he'd kill us for knowing. Variety doesn't say if he'll be directing the film, but it sure is a tempting idea to use him to lend credibility to a series that might inevitably get compared to Bourne. The movie will follow a night manager at a hotel in Europe who...
