When asked about the long journey to Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth and final season, producer Alex Kurtzman is honest but optimistic. “It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman tells Den of Geek when we chat with him at SXSW 2024. “And yeah, it was an incredibly bumpy first year.”
Kurtzman’s referring to the behind-the-scenes difficulties that plagued the show’s first two seasons. Initially developed by Bryan Fuller, who wrote for Deep Space Nine and Voyager before going on to make fan-favorite shows such as Hannibal and American Gods, Discovery ultimately premiered with Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts as showrunners. By the end of season two, both had left the show, with Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise stepping in as showrunners to right the ship.
But for some Star Trek fans, the problems with Discovery go beyond a troubled production. Initially presented as the adventures of Spock...

"Forget about the girl! Get out of here." Epic Pictures has revealed the trailer for an indie hitman action movie titled The Last Mark, yet another movie repeating pretty much the same plot of a hitman who has to do one last job before he retires. But he can't take out this person because it's a woman. Oh how original. This film opens on VOD at the beginning of March if anyone wants to watch. After a young woman witnesses a mob hit, a seasoned assassin and his psychotic partner must track her down before she turns them in, but she proves to be the hardest mark to kill. The Last Mark is directed by Reem Morsi and stars Alexia Fast, Shawn Doyle, Bryce Hodgson, Josh Cruddas, and Jonas Chernick. There's not much to see here, it doesn't look any good. The poster is the best part about this release,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 7 “…But to Connect.”] The Dma (Dark Matter Anomaly) is a threat to everyone, and therefore representatives from across the galaxy gather in the midseason finale of Star Trek: Discovery to determine how to deal with it. But with the choices boiling down to a peaceful approach to those responsible and a forceful attack, one that could have unknown ramifications, there’s a clear division, one that leads to a dramatic decision. From the beginning of the episode, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Book (David Ajala) aren’t on the same page; she’s fine waiting for coordinates of the Dma creators’ location by trying to win over Grudge with a holographic cat toy, while he’d rather keep checking in with Stamets (Anthony Rapp) for an update. Later, at the meeting, the two options are presented, with Tarka (Shawn Doyle) proposing the more aggressive...

Last week, Tilly got her “Galileo Seven” moment, but this week, in “The Examples,” Disco tackles a classic Trek ethical dilemma.
As Burnham and Book navigate the morality of saving prisoners on a doomed colony, “The Examples” front-loads the episode with a ton of callbacks and Easter eggs to the rest of the franchise. Here’s every Easter egg and big reference we spotted in Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 5…

Clarice Episode 3
Clarice, episode 3, “Are You Alright?,” almost allows Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) to overcome the typecasting of her role in the events in the film The Silence of the Lambs. The federal cop practically changes the venue by sheer force of will, as if she could burn the idea of a serial killer from the network series. Sadly, her flame is still attracting too many moths.
The episode again begins in the therapist’s office, so we know the scene will be brief. Both the patient and the doctor appear to be sparring rather than psychoanalyzing. Every sentence is a game of chicken, and it begins to feel more like an interrogation than a session. What makes it interesting are the cuts, which bring doubt to the proceedings. Is Clarice being paranoid? Yes, of course, but that doesn’t mean no one’s after her.

Clarice Episode 1
Clarice, episode 1, “The Silence is Over,” is a fairly literal title. It is set shortly after the events in the film The Silence of the Lambs, in the period when most agents should be reflecting on such an emotionally trying case. Especially since the agent, who was only a trainee at the time, was thrown into “Buffalo Bill’s House of Horrors” just like the women she was trying to save.
Agent Clarice Starling is not comfortable with the word survivor. She swears she was only doing her job, and Rebecca Breeds brings this work ethic to the forefront of how the world sees FBI Agent Starling. As she is mentally sparring with her department-appointed therapist, her eyes dart around the room, noting his movements, the way he sits, how he arranges his magazines. She profiles him as a matter of course. He...

Two long shadows hang over Clarice, the new CBS drama following FBI agent Clarice Starling in the aftermath of her showdown with serial killer Buffalo Bill. The first shadow is cast by The Silence of the Lambs, the 1991 film that swept the top five Academy Awards categories that year, including a Best Actress Oscar for Jodie Foster as Clarice. The second shadow comes from Hannibal, the NBC drama about the other, far more iconic murderer from Silence, cannibal psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter.

If you’ve always wanted a deeper dive into the mind of The Silence of the Lambs‘ Clarice Starling, then CBS has a new show for you. Clarice, which takes place in 1993, aka a year after the events of The Silence of the Lambs, will tell the “untold personal story” of Clarice Starling as she returns to the field. In the new CBS show, the very hard work of catching serial murderers and sexual predators will be made even more complicated by the high-stakes political world of D.C. The series comes from Star Trek‘s Alex Kurtzman and Rachel Getting Married‘s Jenny Lumet, and the first episode was directed by Maja Vrvilo, whom you may recognize from her recent, excellent work from both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard. Basically, Clarice is a new TV show to look out for—whether you are a fan of Thomas Harris’ work or not.

Showtime has officially released a trailer for upcoming two-night limited series “The Comey Rule,” featuring Jeff Daniels as former FBI director James Comey and Brendan Gleeson as President Trump. The miniseries, written and directed by Billy Ray and adapted from Comey’s book “A Higher Loyalty,” premieres on Sunday, Sept. 27.
Focusing on the events leading up to and following the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the first part of the series looks at the earliest days of the Russia investigation and the FBI’s prove of Hillary Clinton’s emails.
In the trailer, a voice on the phone says, “Russia — we think they’re trying to sabotage Secretary Clinton’s campaign.”
“How?” asks Daniels as Comey.
“Ever spend much time on Facebook?” is the reply.

As America gears up for the 2020 presidential election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, Showtime will be taking two nights ahead of Election Day to reexamine the turbulent 2016 election between Trump and Hillary Clinton thanks to the upcoming miniseries “The Comey Rule.” Written and directed by “Captain Phillips” and “Shattered Glass” scribe Billy Ray, “The Comey Rule” is based on the bestselling book “A Higher Loyalty” and explores the relationship between Trump and former FBI director Joseph Comey.
Showtime is billing “The Comey Rule” as “an immersive, behind-the-headlines account of the historically turbulent events surrounding the 2016 presidential election and its aftermath, which divided a nation.” The miniseries’ official synopsis adds: “Rather than a biopic of one man, the series tells the story of two powerful figures, Comey and Trump, whose strikingly different personalities, ethics and loyalties put them on a collision course.”

Showtime has just set a late November premiere date over two nights for its limited series The Comey Rule, the $40 million budget adaptation of A Higher Loyalty, the book by former FBI head James Comey that is about his battles with President Donald Trump. The network released the first images of Gleeson playing Trump, and Daniels playing the former FBI chief in a series about the deterioration of their relationship that quickly became a bitter feud when Comey left his post after Trump fired him.
The decision to place the mini after the upcoming presidential elections is a bit of a puzzler, given its stellar cast and provocative premise. Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) plays former FBI Director James Comey and Brendan Gleeson (Mr. Mercedes) plays President Donald J. Trump.

This spoiler-free review is based on the first two episodes of Impulse season 2.
Viewers of Impulse on YouTube Premium have figured out by now that the television adaptation of the Stephen Gould Jumper novels is more true to the themes of personal trauma from the first book than it is to the high octane action film from 2008. As a result, the pacing of the first season is quite deliberate, focusing more on what caused Henry Coles, played by Maddie Hasson, to teleport in the first place rather than accelerating through her origin story and having her quickly gain control over her abilities. Although some of that will change in season 2, the first two episodes made available for review indicate that the details about...
