Over the years The Film Experience has provided the Academy with brilliant ideas for Honorary Oscars that they've ignored until it was too late and the worthy recipient died. We're talking luminaries like movie stars Max Von Sydow, Albert Finney, and Doris Day, cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, and voice artist Marni Nixon.. So here we are again trying to sway them. They make such strange decisions. Why did Sophia Loren who was already a (deserving) Oscar winner, need an Honorary when she was only in her fifties? Why did they refuse to honor Doris Day because (the rumor is) they knew she wouldn't show but then went ahead and honored Jean Luc Godard who they also knew would never show?
For our suggestions we're limiting ourselves to people over 70... though you could make valid cases for several late 50something or 60somethings if you wanted to like Michelle Pfeiffer,...

“King Richard” costume designer and Lifetime Achievement recipient Sharen Davis was among the many attendees at the Wednesday’s Costume Designer Guild Awards calling for Pay Equity Now. Davis said, “I’ve worked sick. I’ve worked with a broken leg, I even worked after being hit by a car. There is no understudy for costume design. We are critical to incredible filmmaking. Let’s make this year the year that we get paid equity.”
The topic is not new with the guild. For years, costume designers have been fighting for pay equity and the sentiment of feeling undervalued has existed. Not only are they the last people off set, they are also there first thing in the morning, designers argue.
Costume designers are 85% women, yet are paid less than production designers, which are 85% men.

Back in person after the pandemic, the awards recognized excellence in film, TV and short-form costume design and were hosted by Andrew Rannells and Casey Wilson.

Perez also called for “pay equity now.” This has been an ongoing plea from Perez and the costume designers who fight for pay equity. He said, costume designers, are “historically underpaid for too long. The nominations for the Costume Designers Guild Awards will be released on Wednesday, recognizing the achievements of the artisans that created some of the most memorable outfits and clothing designs of the year. Following the 10-month eligibility window, the community of over 1,200 members separates the film categories into three groups — contemporary, period and sci-fi/fantasy.
The distinctions between contemporary and period tend to get blurred, especially with modern subjects like Princess Diana in “Spencer” and Venus and Serena Williams in “King Richard” among the selections. However, per the CDG rules, “any entry with at least 51% of all costumes existing in a historical era greater than 25 years [on or before December 31, 1995] from the current entry year will be considered a period entry.”
That puts Jacqueline Durran (“Spencer”) and Sharen Davis (“King Richard”) into the period film field, where it’s indisputably the most competitive. Three of the five nominees from CDG typically translate to an...

Costume designer Sharen Davis is having a big year, having worked with both Denzel Washington, who directed “A Journal for Jordan,” now in theaters, and with Will Smith, who stars in “King Richard,” on HBO Max.
“A Journal for Jordan,” based on the heartbreaking true story of a soldier deployed to Iraq who keeps a diary for his infant son, is the latest of her frequent collaborations with Washington. Davis says she worked hard to dress down “fashion icon” star Michael B. Jordan. Since the character was in the military, she decided he would have a suitcase with few items. “We want to see how he manages all these visits with five shirts and three pairs of pants,” Davis says.

As a member of the Academy and a three-time Oscar nominee for her work in films including “Walk the Line,” “W.E.” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” costume designer Arianne Phillips makes no secret of her excitement — and support — for the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Sept. 30.
“Whether you’re a film fan or a filmmaker, to be able to learn about the artistry of filmmaking and all the artists is something that’s an extension of my purpose,” says Phillips, who has donated a cache of costumes to the institution, including a prototype dress for Reese Witherspooon from “Walk the Line” and an array of pieces from “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” “I actually owned all the costumes from ‘Hedwig,’ which was part of the deal I made, because it was made on a prayer and a dime,” she explains.

Regina King’s Angela/Sister Night and Baby Yoda were the two pillars of success this Emmy season. So it was no surprise that “Watchmen” and “The Mandalorian” were the biggest craft winners at the Creative Arts Emmys, splitting seven awards apiece — and deservedly so, considering their bold and innovative work, which transcended their superhero and sci-fi trappings.
Damon Lindelof’s zeitgeist-grabbing “Watchmen” was a powerful “remix” of the famed ’80s graphic novel using the Tulsa massacre as a catalyst for excavating the generational sweep of racism and police brutality. HBO’s limited series award winner scored for Gregory Middleton’s cinematography, Sharen Davis and Valerie Zielonka’s fantasy/sci-fi costumes, Henk Van Eeghen’s editing, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ original limited series score, and sound editing, sound mixing, and casting.

Whether it was the dystopian society of “The Handmaid’s Tale” or the alternate history of “Watchmen,” the Emmy nominated costume designers in the fantasy/sci-fi category sought to ground their looks in reality. This meant relying on historical research, such as art and photo references of specific time periods, to help transport audiences into different worlds, and to convey emotion through their designs.

In HBO’s Watchmen, costume designer Meghan Kasperlik found the opportunity to put her stamp on a classic comic book world, first brought to life by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore.
Created by Damon Lindelof, the gritty drama is set in an alternate reality, exploring episodes of racial violence erupting in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as the police face off with a white supremacist group known as the Seventh Kavalry. Putting themselves in the middle of this mayhem are a number of superheroes, each with their own idiosyncratic fashions.
In her first interview with Lindelof and executive producer Tom Spezialy, Kasperlik didn’t know what series was being made—and while she’d seen Zack Snyder’s 2009 film adaptation of Watchmen, she wasn’t as familiar with the graphic novels on which it was based.
Pitching herself for the project without seeing a single outline or script, Kasperlik was immediately drawn to...

The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations for the 22nd Cdga Awards on Tuesday. Among the nominees are Arianne Phillips for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Mayes C. Rubeo for “Jojo Rabbit” and Mitchell Travers for “Hustlers.” “The Irishman” is notably absent from the field.
The Costume Designers Guild celebrates excellence in film, television and short-form costume design. As previously announced, this year’s host will be Emmy-nominated writer, producer, author, director and actor Mindy Kaling, while the honorees will include Mary Ellen Fields (distinguished service award), Michael Kaplan (career achievement award), Adam McKay (distinguished collaborator award) and Charlize Theron (spotlight award).
“On behalf of the Costume Designers Guild, I’d like to congratulate all of our 22nd Cdga nominees. This year is a particularly exciting year for television as we have updated our rules of submission. Designers now submit a single episode that best represents their work on a series.

Nominees for the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards included frontrunning period pieces “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Rocketman.” They were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Jojo Rabbit.” This definitely bodes well for Ruth Carter (“Dolemite”) in her bid for a second consecutive Oscar following “Black Panther.”
However, surprise no shows were “Joker,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Judy.” And, Deborah Cook, who became the first costume designer from animation to get nominated by the Cdga for her breakthrough work on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was denied this time around for her great Victorian-era work on Laika’s stop-motion Oscar contender, “Missing Link.”
Contemporary nominees, meanwhile, included “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Hustlers,” “Knives Out,” “The Laundromat,” and “Queen & Slim.” But “Bombshell” didn’t make the cut.

In Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ classic 1986 graphic novel “Watchmen,” the superheroes and vigilantes make their own costumes. This gives every look a level of accessibility that’s not often a consideration for big-budget action projects, but was a theme that needed to be carried over into HBO’s adaptation of the award-winning comic book.
Meghan Kasperlik, who came up as an assistant costume designer on blockbusters such as “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” was tasked with scaling back on a number of usual genre factors to make sure the characters in the TV series “looked appropriate to the ‘Watchmen’ world and not the world of superheroes we’re used to,” she says.

In the Academy Awards’ 90-year history, just nine black women have won Oscars. But here’s where it gets worse: Only one of those nine won in a non-acting category, Irene Cara, who co-wrote Best Original Song winner “Flashdance… What a Feeling” from “Flashdance” (1983). Cara could get some long overdue company this year from three people — all from the same film, “Black Panther.”
Three of “Black Panther”‘s seven nominations include black women as part of its nominees: Hannah Beachler is up for Best Production Design; Ruth E. Carter earned her third career Best Costume Design bid; and Sza co-wrote Best Original Song contender “All the Stars” with Kendrick Lamar, Sounwave and Anthony Tiffith.
Not only is Beachler the first African-American woman to be nominated for Best Production Design, but she’s the first African-American ever to be shortlisted in the category. Carter broke down that barrier in her category...

Since the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences began celebrating excellence in film in 1927, fewer than 200 black creatives have been nominated across all categories. Among the non-acting awards, only 23 black nominees have won.
As Viola Davis emphasized in her now-famous 2015 Emmy Awards acceptance speech, the problems lies in the lack of opportunity. And things are changing: The Academy’s diversity initiatives broadened its membership, and studies like USC Annenberg’s annual Inclusion Initiative have put the industry on notice that the lack of diversity is a far-reaching issue.
Now, each new year comes with opportunities for “firsts,” — or, almost as important, for yanking a category from a decades-long morass of “first and only.” Other categories still remain without a single black nominee, including Makeup/Hair, Sound Editing, and Visual Effects.
At the 2019 Oscar ceremony, there are 15 black nominees out of 212 overall. Here’s a look at the stats that...

On Feb. 12, members of the Motion Picture Academy will begin voting to determine winners of the 91st Oscars. Each campaign has primed its final push, zeroing in on messaging aimed at bringing home the gold. On Feb. 19, balloting will close and it will then be what feels like (for the nominees) an interminable five days until results are revealed at the Academy Awards.
In this space, we chart the season’s ups and downs, sift through the tea leaves and suggest the direction of the breeze, whatever that might be. But I’m not a robot. I have my favorites (or is it favourites?). So as voters sit down to make their final choices, here’s an effort at cheerleading on behalf of a few contenders that deserve to hear their names called — in one columnist’s opinion, anyway.
