I recently wrote a news piece for Screen Rant about the comments that Gotham show runner Bruno Heller made about Superheroes not working on television and follow-up clarification from executive producer Ken Woodruff.
Bruno Heller was at the Edinburgh Television Festival this past August, when he blurted out the following:
"I don’t think superheroes work very well on TV. Probably because of the costume thing."
Heller went on to say:
"TV is about real people and faces and not so much about magic and the supernatural things"
Really? Really Bruno? I think viewers of HBO's Game of Thrones may differ in that opinion, especially since Gotham averaged 4 million viewers per episode last season and Game of Thrones averaged 22 million. Executive producer Ken Woodruff tried to further clarify Heller's comments while promoting Gotham season three to the Hollywood Reporter:
“I think I can help clarify his statement. There’s a...

Sacha Baron Cohen cohort Dan Mazer – who produced Cohen’s movies Bruno, Borat and The Dictator – follows up his feature debut, I Give It A Year, with a Cohen-style gross-out comedy starring the legend that is Robert De Niro. This time round De Niro, in another of his comedic roles (his last The Intern was superb Fyi), he appears alongside the smouldering sex-bomb that is Zac Efron. And both of them get topless. Which should be all most of this films target audience will need to know really. But I digress.
Dirty Grandpa sees preppy Jason (Efron), just days away from getting married to his equally uptight fiancée, tasked with taking his grandpa, Dick, to Florida for Spring Break...

Universal's Minions, the third installment in their Despicable Me franchise, opened to $115.2M in estimated domestic grosses, averaging $26,785 in 4,301 theaters, making it the second biggest animated opening of all time. The little yellow pills passed 2004's Shrek 2 with $108M ($919.8M worldwide cume) and 2010's Toy Story 3 with $110.3M ($1.06B worldwide cume). The Minions couldn't catch up to Shrek the Third, however, which opened with $121.6M ($799M worldwide cume) in 2007. Regardless, it's another massive win for Universal who, it seems, can do no wrong in 2015. On July 8th the company crossed $3B in international grosses, the fastest any studio has reached that milestone, crushing the record set by 20th Century Fox in October of 2014. This also marks the first time in Universal's 103-year history that the studio has reached $3 billion at the international box office. The Gallows stayed right with the tracking and estimates as the R-rated horror flick made $10M in 2,720 venues.

Universal is estimating that Minions, the 3-D prequel to their Despicable Me franchise is heading to an astonishing $120.9M opening weekend. The CG animated flick from Illumination Entertainment marched into 4,301 venues Friday, the most North American venues in Universal's history, and left with $46.2M for the day. Thus Minions is now vying for the title of the biggest animated opening of all time (not adjusted for inflation). It appears it will surpass 2004's Shrek 2 with $108M ($919.8M worldwide cume), 2010's Toy Story 3 with $110.3M ($1.06B worldwide cume), and even 2007's mammoth Shrek the Third opening with $121.6M ($799M worldwide cume). Warner Bros. is reporting that The Gallows, their R-rated horror flick, made $4.5M in 2,720 venues for an estimated $10.8M weekend (depending on how the Twitter-sphere treats it). Focus Features' Self/Less, with Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley, opened in 2,353 venues and made $1.9M on its way to a likely,...

Summer movie season is a magic time of year when Hollywood traditionally rolls out its most appealing merchandise. It’s true that some summer movie seasons are better than others. This is our ranking of all the summer movie seasons since 1980 from worst to best.
On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. George Lucas and Spielberg followed up in 1977 with Star Wars, which became a sensational and very profitable hit. It helped to convince production...

After Jackass 3D (and its pseudo-sequel Jackass 3.5 compiled of unused material) and the tragically unfortunate death of celebrated Jackass stunt performer Ryan Dunn, it went up in the air regarding what was next for the crew of professional pranksters. Would Jackass 3 live on as their swan song? Would they ever reunite one last time for 90 minutes of juvenile yet irresistible humor?
With Bad Grandpa we sort of have an answer, as it takes a popular sketch character from the Jackass heritage and creates a hidden camera film around a very basic story. Hey, it worked for Sacha Baron Cohen with Borat (and to a lesser extent with Bruno) so I see no harm in the Jackass crew taking a stab at it. If anything the results are the most inspired and refreshing series of gags in years from the group and a step in a direction ripe with further potential.

This week’s episode of USA’s Suits should be remembered as the hour in which Jessica (Gina Torres) made Harvey (Gabriel Macht) a name partner, having no idea he’s been plotting to take control of the firm from her. But really, it’s feline-lover Louis (Rick Hoffman) meeting the cat of his archenemy, Nigel (Adam Godley), that we won’t soon forget. Watch the scene below. Just the look on Hoffman’s face when he first sees her — already, you want to rewind. Also, that cat should be in this gallery of MVPs: Most Valuable Pets.

Five things we learned about the Us box office this weekend
• Elysium: Matt Damon interview
• Elysium trailer review
1. Indies give studio movies a run for their money
Elysium stormed to number one on a pretty solid $30.4m through Sony's TriStar label. However Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to District 9 – his 2009 indie breakout that Sony also acquired for distribution several years ago – is a product of the independent world. Media Rights Capital, the company behind such hits as the Netflix original series House of Cards and movies like Bruno and Babel, provided the financing. 2 Guns is another example of an indie that can mix it with the studios and opened last weekend at the top of the charts. The indie space continues to be a place to mount studio-level movies that are often daring, intelligent stories made for lower budgets, and the results can be impressive.

Gauging by Internet hype, Pacific Rim was easily the most-anticipated movie opening this weekend. General audiences weren't quite as enthusiastic, though, and the monsters vs. robots action movie wound up behind Adam Sandler's Grown Ups 2 and animated hit Despicable Me 2.Overall, the Top 12 earned $187.9 million, which is up 22 percent year-over-year. In first place, Despicable Me 2 fell 47 percent to $43.9 million this weekend. That's generally in line with last month's Monsters University, though the drop is a bit steeper than that of the first Despicable Me (42 percent). Through 12 days, Despicable Me 2 has earned $228.4 million, and will pass the first movie's $251.5 million total by Friday. Based on its current trajectory, it should wind up being the Summer's second-highest-grossing movie with around $350 million. In second place, comedy sequel Grown Ups 2 opened to $41.5 million from 3,491 locations. That's slightly better than the first Grown Ups, which took in $40.5 million over...

There’s a first time for everything. At a Cannes showing of Blue Is the Warmest Color, a three-hour French drama about a young woman who falls into a romance that digs its hooks in and won’t let go of her, the audience sat raptly as Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a quietly precocious 17-year-old Paris high school girl, goes to bed with Emma (Léa Seydoux), the painter and Fine Arts graduate student she met at a lesbian bar. It’s Adèle’s first experience with another woman — but ever since the late ’70s, there have been plenty of lesbian-awakening dramas,...

François Hollande, France's first Socialist president for nearly 20 years, has had a nightmarish first year
The freshly cut inscription on the marble "tombstone" was savage and to the point: "Betrayal! Here lie the promises of F. Hollande which were made to workers and their families in Florange on 24 February 2012. From the steelworkers of Lorraine." With barely suppressed anger and bitterness, Frédéric Weber, a local union official, explained why it was sitting in his office: "When François Hollande was campaigning for the presidency, he said to me: 'I will be the president of change.' He came to Florange and he said that he would fight a war against the kind of finance that closed our steelworks. But he has bowed down before the markets and screwed the workers instead."
Few countries do gesture politics with as much panache as the French. But the anger last week in this picturesque corner of north-eastern France,...

It was a slow weekend at the box office, with Identity Thief reclaiming the top spot and A Good Die to Die Hard taking a steep fall from the top.
In it’s third weekend in release Identity Thief worked it’s way back to number on with $14 million and a decline of 40.6%. The hit comedy now has a domestic total of of $93.6 million. With a budget of only $35 million, it’s no wonder why a sequel is in the works.
Dwayne Johnson’s action/crime/drama Snitch managed the number two spot with $13 million. While not great, it’s a decent showing and The Rock fared better than his action counterparts Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Statham have in recent weekends.
The Weinstein Company’s Escape from Planet Earth held up well it’s second weekend in release with a drop of 30.7% to finish the weekend with $11 million. Escape‘s domestic total is now at $35.1 million.

The Weinstein Company’s Escape from Planet Earth held up well it’s second weekend in release with a drop of 30.7% to finish the weekend with $11 million. Escape‘s domestic total is now at $35.1 million.

The Summer 2012 Movie Season is here with Marvel's The Avengers getting things off to a good start and considering I've already seen that movie, and reviewed it (read that here), I decided I would leave it off this list. So, I guess, this is my Top 15 Most Anticipated Summer 2012 Movies... excluding The Avengers. However, along with The Avengers, there are three other films I've already seen and reviewed that are also hitting theaters this summer that I thought I would mention before we get started. The Avengers (May 4) Should You See It? Yes! What's It About: Superheroes teaming up to defeat an alien god flanked by an alien army that really likes blowing up cars. Review Quote: "When it comes to grandiose summer blockbuster spectacle this is the kind of movie you want to see." (Read the full review here) Polisse (May 18) Should You See It? Definitely! In the aftermath of Whitney Houston’s death Saturday afternoon in her Beverly Hills hotel suite, I fully expected Grammy producers to open their 2012 award ceremony with a triubute to the fallen pop icon. Strangely enough, though, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson’s sublime cover of Houston’s most iconic ballad, “I Will Always Love You,” didn’t happen until the 2:42 mark, casting a shadow of “Where’s the Whitney tribute?” over much of what preceded it. Nevertheless, the decidedly backloaded telecast had some memorable musical moments, and here’s our countdown of the Top 5 (neither of which include Chris...

Okay, for the very first time, I sat down and watch the entire game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants, why? Because I was anticipating the Madonna half-time show! I think she delivered and showed to the world that she's still the Queen of Pop. Love her as a performer, but as a director? "W.E." is a totally different story!
But I digress.
We're here to talk about the boatload of movie trailers that were supposed to tease us. Were you teased? Which one is your favorite Super Bowl movie trailer?
My heart belonged to "The Avengers" even though the last shot of the trailer looked just like a bunch of people in funny costumes trying to save the world.
My least favorite? Do I really have to endure Jar Jar Binks again in "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" 3D or not?
So without further adieu,...

2011 is almost at an end, but while we're sorry to say goodbye to a year that brought us so many great films, we're just as excited for what the future brings us. After all, "Harry Potter" might be over, but "The Dark Knight Rises," 'The Avengers," "The Hunger Games" and the final installment of "Twilight" are all on the horizon. And that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to big blockbuster events.
So today, instead of looking back, let's look forward -- to the 50 movies we can't wait to see in 2012. Because we have a feeling that this might just be the best year for movies yet.
'The Woman in Black'
Release Date: February 3

Transformers: Dark of the Moon held on to first place in its second weekend, and actually showed some improvement over the last Transformers installment. Among openers, Horrible Bosses extended the winning streak for R-rated comedies this Summer, while Zookeeper wound up in third on middling results. Overall box office was off around 19 percent from the same frame last year, when Despicable Me debuted to a huge $56.4 million.Transformers fell 52 percent to an estimated $47 million. That's a lighter decline and a higher second weekend figure than those for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, indicating that Dark of the Moon is maintaining interest at a higher rate than its often maligned predecessor. On Sunday, Dark of the Moon passed The Hangover Part II to become 2011's top-grossing movie, and its 12-day total currently sits at a healthy $261 million.Horrible Bosses opened to an estimated $28.1 million, which is up from Bridesmaids but a...

Universal Pictures has picked up a movie pitch for a untitled family adventure film. Little Fockers screenwriter Larry Stuckey pitched the film, and will write the script. Jay Roach (Little Fockers, Meet the Parents, Borat, Bruno) will produce the film, and Dean Parisot (Fun With Dick and Jane) is attached to direct the comedy.
The story revolves around a man and a woman who put aside their adventurous days in order to have a family. When the man finds his life a bit routine, he can't resist going off in search of a long-buried, fabled icon, convincing his family they're merely going on vacation.
Looking at the people developing this film, I can't help but think this is going to turn out being a very mediocre film.

Taylor Swift extends her reign on Billboard Hot 200 at the beginning of this new year. Her country music album "Speak Now" holds on the first position with another 77,000 copies sold in the slow week of the rundown. Although there is no new entry at the Top 10, the holdovers sitting behind her is quite different from those of last week.
After staying in the list for several weeks, holiday albums such as Susan Boyle's "The Gift", "Glee" Christmas compilation, and Jackie Evancho's "O Holy Night", are out of the Top 10. Their vacant slots at the second, third and fourth are claimed by Eminem's "Recovery", Rihanna's "Loud" and Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday" respectively.
The likes of Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", Daft Punk's "Tron Legacy" soundtrack, Bruno Mars's "Doo - Wops & Hooligans", and Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" make their return after being absent for some weeks and more.

The nominations of the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards have been announced on Wednesday night, December 1, and newcomer Bruno Mars has got the ultimate surprise. Although his solo debut album, "Doo - Wops & Hooligans", failed short of the Grammy eligibility period, the 25-year-old has received seven nods for the prominent awards in music.
As a member of the songwriting/production team the Smeezingtons, Bruno got his nominations for his collaborations with other artists, including with Cee Lo Green on "F***k You" and with B.o.B on "Nothin' On You". Asked about how he felt nabbing many noms, the singer who has #1 hit with Travis McCoy for "Billionaire" sincerely said, "It's a little surreal. We're thankful."

Interview: “Dinner for Schmucks” director Jay Roach on Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Sacha Baron Cohen
By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Don’t call it a remake.
Yes, Jay Roach’s latest comedy “Dinner for Schmucks,” which opens this Friday, drops Steve Carell and Paul Rudd into hilariously uncomfortable situations that are reminiscent of French director Francis Veber’s 1998 comedy, “The Dinner Game.”
But Roach, who recently spoke with Hollywood News about the production, was quick to point out that they moved away from the “Dinner Game” premise to weave their own, unique joke.
The film stars Rudd as a ladder-climbing corporate executive who is asked to invite an idiot to a strange dinner-party game. He thinks he discovers a slam-dunk dork in Carell. Then, however, Roach says their film goes down several different avenues as it distances itself from Veber’s film, which he considers a masterpiece.

Gru and his army of Minions may appear to be ruthless villains in constant pursuit of world domination, but that didn't stop audiences from showing Despicable Me some serious love at the box office. The weekend's other new release Predators was far behind, though it still performed admirably compared to past entries in the franchise. Holdovers The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Toy Story 3 continued to play well, while The Last Airbender had a considerable drop-off. The Top 12 was up a massive 43 percent from the same time frame last year, when Bruno led with $30.6 million.Despicable Me crushed even the most optimistic predictions by opening to an estimated $60.1 million on around 5,200 screens at 3,476 theaters. While this number falls short of the opening grosses for the summer's other 3D animated features Toy Story 3 and Shrek Forever After, it's still phenomenal considering Despicable Me is a wholly original feature with no built-in audience.

Being mean has worked! For Despicable Me earned an estimated $60.1 million for the weekend, proving, yet again, that animated flicks are not just for kids. And it, along with Toy Story 3, will be two of summer’s biggest success stories. The other new wide release, Predators starring Adrian Brody, earned an estimated $25.3 million for the weekend–above expectations and better than the majority of other Predator movies released over the last 23 years. The performances of these two films plus the strong holds of Toy Story, Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Grown Ups helped boost the box office up a remarkable 40 percent over last year at this time when Bruno opened to $30.6 million.

After the last three weeks were dominated by Toy Story 3 and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, two comparatively lower profile newcomers take aim at solid returns this weekend. 3D animated feature Despicable Me opens at 3,475 theaters, while Predators lands at 2,669 locations. Despicable Me follows Shrek Forever After and Toy Story 3 as the third major 3-D computer-animated movie of the summer. While those movies had a built-in brand and production houses known for making hits, Despicable Me is an unestablished property and only the third computer-animated release ever for Universal Pictures. It's also their first movie in a deal with Illumination Entertainment, founded by former Fox Animation president Chris Meledandri. During his tenure at Fox, Meledandri was responsible for overseeing the first two entries in the hugely successful Ice Age series, which made $176.4 and $195.3 million, respectively. He also had a hand in bringing Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who!

But on the eve of his second starring role in Get Him to the Greek – as well as his third, in the acclaimed independent dramedy Cyrus – Hill wants audiences to view him based on these performances rather than the ones which initially earned him the stardom he now enjoys. “
I think [people should] judge me on this year and judge me on next year,” Hill said during a roundtable interview Sunday in Hollywood, Calif. “Because between Cyrus and this movie, I think both characters are completely unrecognizable from my characters in Superbad and Knocked Up.” Hollywood News joined a sizable...

Ziggy Marley's charitable organization, Urge (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), recently held its biannual health fair at the Cedella Booker Basic School in Nine Mile, Saint Ann, Jamaica – the birthplace of Ziggy’s father, Bob Marley.
Present at the health fair was a team of 21 physicians, nurses and support staff led by Dr. Bruno Levin of Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. Along with volunteers and representatives from Tuff Gong International (the Marley family recording label), the health team administered free medical care to those attending the health fair, including the dispensation of over the counter medications.
Also present at the health fair were representatives of the St. Ann’s Health Department, offering immunizations, nutrition information as well as mental health and physical therapy options.

A few weeks ago we reported that casting was underway for Men In Black III, with Sacha Baron Cohen (Sweeney Todd, Bruno) and Jemaine Clement ("The Flight of the Conchords") up for the role of a character named "Yaz", and Josh Brolin still attached. Adding more fuel to the fire, it's being reported that Will Smith could be returning to Columbia Pictures' franchise. According to the reports, Smith is pondering which ship he'll captain next, Men in Black III or 20th Century Fox's fantasy-adventure The City That Sailed. News is expected very soon. Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Igor, Idiocracy) wrote the screenplay. The 1997 Men in Black grossed nearly $600m worldwide, while its 2002 sequel took in $440m.

We recently reported that Columbia Pictures is trying to get the third "Men in Black" movie off the ground. Will Smith is expected to return, Tommy Lee Jones has yet to be confirmed, and Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) is being considered for a role. Now comes word that the studio is also looking at Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Bruno) and Jemaine Clement ("The Flight of the Conchords") to play a character named "Yaz." "Mib 3" is based on a script by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Idiocracy) and tentatively has Barry Sonnenfeld (Mib, Mib 2) coming back to direct. Columbia Pictures has been hoping to get the film into production this spring, but that will likely not happen.

Columbia Pictures is officially having conversations regarding their third entry in the Men In Black franchise (Men In Black 3) as we're being told by industry insiders that in addition to Jonah Hex cowboy Josh Brolin likely (still unconfirmed) to star, they've shown strong interest in both Sacha Baron Cohen (Sweeney Todd, Bruno) and Jemaine Clement ("The Flight of the Conchords") for a character named "Yaz" (a new agent?). Neither are locked, this should be taken strictly as rumor for now. Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Igor, Idiocracy) wrote the screenplay. Shooting was originally rumored to begin this spring. The 1997 Men in Black grossed nearly $600m worldwide, while its 2002 sequel took in $440m. Why so long for another sequel? Who knows!

Twitter-Wood voiced a wide variety of perspectives on the Academy Awards ceremony last night, and some posters like Ben Stiller and Lee Unkrich tweeted photos as well. Both of those guys showed off some privileged looks at the Oscars, but as you'll see below, one view was worth significantly more celebration.
Emma Roberts' crush on Shaun White came closer to resulting in a face-to-face meeting, but you'll have to read on below to find out what happened. Off all the opinions going up, I may have sided with director Errol Morris more than anyone. I'll let you make your own judgments regarding "Twilight," the new "Iron Man 2" trailer and other horror-movie issues raised after the jump in Twitter-Wood for March 8th, 2010.

Derek and Hansel are set to stalk back down the catwalk in a followup to the hit 2001 comedy. A welcome revival, or - in the wake of Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno - embarrassingly off-trend?
The tagline almost writes itself: He's back. And he's still really, really good-looking. Ben Stiller has confirmed that he's planning a sequel to 2001 comedy Zoolander, in which the actor played a clueless but kindhearted male model struggling to find his way back into the limelight.
"We're in the process of getting a script written, so it's in the early stages. But yeah, it's going to happen," Stiller told MTV, adding that Zoolander 2 would focus on how the fashion industry has changed in the 10 years since moviegoers last saw Derek Zoolander and rival catwalk king Hansel, played by Owen Wilson.
"In the fashion world, if you go away for a year, it's changed - it just happens so quickly,...

So how did "A Serious Man" pull off that underdog Oscar nomination for best picture? Perhaps because it was among the first wave of DVD screeners shipped to academy members, long before the deluge of discs that arrived during the holiday season. Such an early-out-of-the-gate strategy certainly helped "Slumdog Millionaire" in last year's derby as it romped to victory with eight wins, including best picture. And it might have helped land lead acting nods last year for Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor") and Melissa Leo ("Frozen River"), whose DVDs were among the first dozen discs to get into Oscar voters' hands. Likewise for this year's lead actress contender Carey Mulligan ("An Education") and supporting actor nominee Woody Harrelson ("The Messenger"). Other films that did well in past derbies, like "Juno" (2007) and "Hustle and Flow" (2005), were also delivered to the mailboxes of Oscar voters early in the award cycle. Early bird "Little Miss Sunshine...
