Ryan Michelle Bathé has been cast as the wife of Terry Crew’s cop character in CBS’ comedy pilot based on the “JumpStart” comic strip, a rep for the actress told TheWrap on Wednesday.
Her character, Marcy, is described as “a hard-working nurse who is naturally maternal and wise beyond her years. She and Joe share a close bond and are supportive of one another even when they don’t agree. The two have a good life in their middle-class Philly neighborhood with their two teen kids — meeting all challenges, and enjoying their share of goofy times as well.”
The logline for the show: “Joe and Marcy are young, hip, urban parents with old school values who are willing to sacrifice for their kids and have some laughs while doing it!”

Romantic comedies always hit and miss with me. I like them, for the most part, but have grown weary of the formulaic plots and pat endings. Still, with fresh writing, quality gags and dialogue, a good director coupled with a fine screenwriter, can make even formulaic fun. Director/co-writer Rick Famuyiwa and screenwriters Wayne Conley and Malcolm Spellman offer some hilarious moments in Our Family Wedding. Had they left out at least three very stupid gags, it would have been a fine romantic comedy. But they did not avoid the silly, actually asinine, defeating what could have been a decent film overall, which will most certainly disappoint some.

Our thoughts: “Our Family Wedding” feels like something that should have been released straight to DVD. It’s a film that blatantly recycles one too many ideas from previous movies of the same genre without offering cinemagoers anything worth caring for. The story is dull, the characters are dumb, and the performances honestly couldn’t be much worse.

I’ve recently noticed a disturbing trend in Hollywood. I’m not sure what to call it but its basically where a well known African American actor wins a prestigious award (Golden Globe, Academy Award, etc) for a great performance and then goes back to choosing mediocre roles like they never won said award. I’ll give a few examples to illustrate the trend.
Jamie Foxx wins an Academy Award for Best Actor (Ray) and then follows it up with Stealth, Law Abiding Citizen, and Valentine’s Day. Halle Berry wins Academy Award for Best Actress (Monster’s Ball) and follows it up with Catwoman, Robots, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Terrance Howard blew us away with his Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in Hustle and Flow (I thought he should have won over Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote) but then followed up with Pride, The Perfect Holiday, and Fighting.
