The "Fast and Furious" series has never shied away from using CGI, mostly because its increasingly extravagant stunts can't all be done practically. Believe it or not, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker didn't actually drive a Lykan Hypersport out the 50th-floor window of a skyscraper in "Fast and Furious 7." And if you've seen the behind-the-scenes footage from the scene in "Fast X" where Jason Momoa's Dante blows up the armored truck carrying Diesel's Dom Toretto, you'll have seen plenty of blue screens all over the place.
But that doesn't mean everything in the "Fast" franchise is a digital fabrication. In fact, the series has used practical effects whenever possible, causing a hell of a lot of damage along the way. With "Fast X," director Louis Leterrier wanted things to be relatively grounded, especially after "F9" sent Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and Tyrese Gibson into space. This is why you'll...

Fans of the “Fast and the Furious” franchise have grown accustomed to the series’ increasingly elaborate and outrageous set pieces. Given that “F9” climaxed with a scene in which characters literally drove a car into outer space, the pressure was on for “Fast X” director Louis Leterrier and screenwriters Dan Mazeau, Justin Lin, and Zach Dean to open their film with one of the best action sequences yet. The solution: A thrilling chase through the streets of Rome as bad guy Dante (Jason Momoa) sets loose a 10-ton bomb, and Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his team try to maneuver it away from the crowded city. The sequence consists of 554 shots, nearly all of which are a sophisticated combination of stunt driving, practical effects, and computer-generated imagery that are seamlessly blended into perhaps the most spectacular “Fast and Furious” sequence yet.

Some of the most enduring images of the 9/11 attacks were the before-and-after photos of the World Trade Center, with the soaring towers beautifully jutting out from Downtown before they fell to the ground.
For films and TV shows set in a pre-9/11 world, VFX artists are often tasked with recreating that skyline. The artists have plenty to draw from, as the buildings were well-documented with photographs, videos and footage that to help them faithfully and accurately recreate the twin towers, often in painstaking detail.
On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, two VFX artists discussed how they recreated the twin towers for the film “United 93” and FX’s “Pose.”

Starz’s pirate drama “Black Sails” has already won the Emmy, in its first season, for supporting VFX. But the show outdid itself this season, creating a hurricane that took the effects to a new level of craftsmanship. “Black Sails,” the “Treasure Island” prequel created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine (starring Toby Stephens as Captain Flint) featured a breathtaking 18-minute, 250-shot sequence that was also enhanced by the sound editing, which grabbed a nom as well.

For “Star Trek Beyond,” director Justin Lin —a Trekkie since youth — wanted a return to a simpler “Star Trek” with a more unified theme tuned into the multi-media franchise’s 50th anniversary. This included streamlining the Starship Enterprise before systematically destroying it, along with introducing a few new wrinkles.
Production VFX supervisor and Double Negative co-founder Peter Chiang looked back to the 60s f0r The Enterprise, “with a thin neck and a thin nacelle,” he said. “We view different attributes of The Enterprise through angles and shots and little openings that hadn’t been explored before.” Those new perspectives include: how the saucer separates from the neck, where Kelvin pods sit within the Bridge, and the Bridge view port area where escape pods are placed.

Justin Lin didn’t realize he was a Trekkie until J.J. Abrams called him out of the blue. Between a Thursday phone call and what ended up a Monday meeting, Lin had dinner with his family, who had emigrated from Taiwan to run an Anaheim grocery store when he was 8 years old. That’s when it hit him that between age 8 and 18 he had grown up with Gene Roddenberry’s “Star Trek” TV series. It was embedded deep inside him.
Lin had turned away from directing the seventh installment of the “Fast and Furious” franchise, which grew from 3-6 with worldwide grosses of $158 million for “Tokyo Drift,” $363 million for “Fast & Furious” and $626 million for “Fast Five” to $789 million for “Fast & Furious 6.” (James Wan continued the trajectory when the seventh film earned $1.52 billion.) Today the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films announced its nominees for the 2013 Saturn Awards, one of the few awards programs in which a lot of us will recognize nearly every production. The awards have been expanded over recent years, so if you are unclear about just what type of productions are honored by the Academy, an explanation is included in the press release below, although it can really be summarized as “we know it when we see it.”
A few head-scratchers, however, just beg to be called out:
Anna Karenina? Les Miserables? Leverage? Elementary? Really? That is some broad definition. No subgenre categories for television. The Academy proofreader should know by now that it’s “Syfy” and not “SyFy” (don’t worry, I fixed it, and sorry, it’s a pet peeve). Adding in historical fiction somewhere somehow without actually mentioning it. The entire category “Best Youth-Oriented...
