It’s no secret that it’s taken decades of twists and turns in Hollywood to get Michael Mann’s anticipated “Ferrari,” which makes its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival Aug. 31, to the big screen.
But what’s less known is that the journey of this drama about Italian sports car builder and racing pioneer Enzo Ferrari originated with Italy’s storied Cecchi Gori Group before the company went bust.
In 1991, Los Angeles-based Penta Pictures — which had been jointly founded by producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori and then-rising TV mogul Silvio Berlusconi — bought adaptation rights to the book “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races” by Brock Yates that is the basis for Mann’s picture.
Cecchi Gori subsequently hired Troy Kennedy Martin to write the script and when Penta Pictures was dissolved in 1995 the “Ferrari” rights went to its U.S. arm, Cecchi Gori Pictures.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” executive producer Niels Juul is in Cannes with several projects based on IP from the vault of Italy’s storied Cecchi Gori movie company that include a remake of the Dino Risi-directed classic “Il Sorpasso” and “Kafka,” a script about the turbulent love life of Franz Kafka by John Briley (“Gandhi”).
The IP and some other assets of the movie company that once dominated Italy’s film industry and collapsed in the mid-1990s were acquired late last year by a group of Italian investors under the new management of Rome-based CEO Federico Canfora and U.S-based Javier Balliero Madrid. Madrid is president of the new company, which is backing a partial relaunch of the Cecchi Gori brand, which is behind such Oscar-winners as “Life Is Beautiful,” “Mediterraneo” and “Il Postino.”
They have a producing agreement with Los Angeles-based Juul, who is a former Cecchi Gori Pictures CEO.

Penélope Cruz and Adam Driver, who are both expected to be attending the upcoming Venice Film Festival, are already in Italy shooting Micheal Mann’s long-gestating “Ferrari” drama, in which Cruz appears as the wife of auto racing impresario Enzo Ferrari, played by Driver.
First images are surfacing of Cruz (see above photo) as Ferrari’s wife Laura after cameras started rolling Aug. 1 in central Italy.
The big-budget biopic kicked off physical production in the town of Maranello, known worldwide as the home of Ferrari and the iconic car’s Formula One racing team. It follows the former racecar driver and auto manufacturing giant in the summer of 1957. With his marriage to his wife Laura (Cruz) in crisis over the mourning of a son, and the threat of bankruptcy looming over the company he and his wife built 10 years earlier, Ferrari embarks on a bold race — the Mille Miglia, 1,000 miles across Italy.

At 81, Italian horror maestro Dario Argento is busier than ever.
The director of a string of cult chiller classics starting in the 1970s, including “The Bird With the Crystal Plumage,” “Suspiria” and “Deep Red,” was at Cannes last July with his acting debut in Gaspar Noe’s “Vortex,” about a pair of old lovers. Argento was also celebrated last year with a new book by Italian critic Steve Della Casa and a retro at New York’s Lincoln Center. This spring he’s set to be honored with a big show at Italy’s National Museum of Cinema in Turin.
More significantly, having returned to the director’s chair after a decade, Argento is back with “Dark Glasses,” which he describes as a classic thriller, or giallo, as the violent crime genre is known in Italy.

The new management of Cecchi Gori Pictures has hit paydirt as a California bankruptcy judge has ruled that rights to 42 film projects, including work by famed directors Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann, were fraudulently transferred. After issuing a partial summary judgment earlier this month, the judge has followed it up by determining that Cecchi Gori Pictures — once an Italian production giant behind such films as Il Postino, Life Is Beautiful and Se7en — was entitled to recover assets.

Martin Scorcese's powerful religious film, following the Catholic church's mission to instill Christianity in Fuedal Japan, Silence is coming out this March! Come inside to find out how you can get your hands on it early.
One of the biggest snubs of this year's Academy Awards, Silence, is making its way to digital and blu-ray, merely 3 months after being on the big screen. The Martin Scorsese religious feature, starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, and Liam Neeson will arrive on Blu-Ray on March 28th, but for audiences who can't wait that long the Digital HD version will be available March 14th.
Understandably, there aren't many added features for the Blu-Ray/Digital copy of Silence. If you haven't seen the movie, there really isn't much of a need for an alternate ending, deleted scenes, bloopers, or anything of the sort. Instead, the only new content will stem from a...

Her expertise, honest work ethic, and keen sensibilities are widely respected in the industry and have helped her to start 13 Films with strong financial backing.
One year later, Tannaz shares the latest progress on this exciting venture:
I launched 13 Films a year ago, so this Afm marks my one year anniversary. It’s very exciting to see how far the company has come since its inception, as we continue to grow and build a full slate of films.
Given my background as a foreign sales agent, the timing was right to start my own company and I was able to secure strong investors to back my vision.
My aim is to seek cast-driven, commercial films with theatrical potential across all genres. Our eclectic state includes romantic comedies, action films, thrillers and family films.
We’re looking for about eight to ten films a year in pre-sales, peppered with a few finished films.
What is your background in sales?
For the last seven years, I was a freelance sales consultant and had the opportunity to work for some of the leading companies in the business - Voltage Pictures and Sierra/Affinity, to name a few.
Over the years, I developed great relationships and relished being able to work on high profile projects. However, I felt I was ready to make the transition from freelance consultant to having my own company and being able to immerse myself in my own projects.
Once I secured the financial investment, it was time to move forward with full force and determination.
How did you first get involved in the business?
I’ve been in the industry for about 18 years.
My very first job in the industry was working in production actually. I worked for PentAmerica Pictures, which was a partnership between Vittorio Cecchi Gori and Silvio Berlusconi.
Way back when I got the chance to work as an assistant at Afm, I fell in love with foreign sales from the very first moment. Since then, I was determined to succeed in the field and started from the ground up. I sought out the right opportunities to learn and absorb as much possible to reach the level where I’m at today.
My sales background started in television sales – I was fortunate enough to work for some of the bigger independent companies such as Win, Kushner-Locke and 20th Century Fox before moving into film.
What inspires you in your work?
What I love most is the face-to-face interaction with people from all over the world.
It’s truly fascinating and what drives me to continue doing this every day. The world is such a melting pot of different cultures, and being able to constantly meet and do business with buyers from across the globe is very rewarding. There’s never a dull moment.
Please talk about the 13 Films Slate.
We just announced our big, new project - "Voice From The Stone", which is a supernatural thriller starring Emilia Clarke from “Game of Thrones.”
It’s a haunting script produced by Dean Zanuck who also produced "The Road to Perdition". The film is currently shooting in Italy which is very exciting.
I have two other new projects too – an action film called "Extortion", which is a very fun project with Frank Grillo attached and set to start shooting by the end of November.
Another key title for us is the comedy "Loitering With Intent", which was well received at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and stars Sam Rockwell and Marisa Tomei. We showed the film for the first time to buyers here at Afm, and were thrilled with the response. It will be released theatrically in the Us by The Orchard, a Sony Pictures company.

An attorney who once represented Italian producer Gianni Nunnari (Se7en, 300, From Dusk to Dawn) in a lawsuit against Martin Scorsese, is suing his former client for $20 million on allegations of being subject to a fraud. The lawsuit from New York lawyer Aaron Richard Golub is a complicated, decade-spanning one that deals with conflicts, duties and representations made in Hollywood. It also marks the latest twist in an old battle between two Italian cinema giants -- Nunnari and Vittorio Cecchi Gori -- as well as the latest development in an ongoing battle over Silence, which Scorsese agreed to direct but

A spurned production company thinks Martin Scorsese ain't quite the goodfella. Cecchi Gori Pictures has sued the Oscar-winning auteur for breach of contract after he allegedly bailed on a project that he agreed to direct for them 20 years ago, E! News has confirmed. In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, the company claims that in 1990 the Raging Bull director signed on to helm an adaptation of the Japanese novel Silence, a religion-tinged drama about the persecution of Christians in 17th-century Japan by its imperious emperor The company, which was founded by Italian magnate Vittorio Cecchi Gori, alleges that it already dropped $750,000 to kick-start the project and that Scorsese...

Martin Scorsese is one of cinema's most prolific directors, but it's the film he isn't making that's getting him into trouble. Cecchi Gori Pictures, the production company headed by Vittorio Cecchi Gori, has filed a lawsuit against Scorsese for not making his dream project "Silence," which the director has been trying to get mounted for the past two decades. Based on a Japanese novel by Shusaku Endo, "Silence" follows a group of missionaries in 1683 who are sent to Japan in order to investigate the reported torturing of Christians by the country's emperor. Scorsese was originally supposed to direct "Silence" after 1997's "Kundun," but signed deals in 2004 and 2011 that allowed him to delay "Silence" until he finished "The Departed," "Shutter Island" and "Hugo." In May, Cecchi Gori CEO Niels Juul said that "Silence" had been "in pre-production" for a while,...

Martin Scorsese has been sued by the production company behind a film project that the Oscar-winning director allegedly promised to make more than two decades ago. In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Cecchi Gori Pictures, the production company headed by Vittorio Cecchi Gori, claims it entered into several agreements with Scorsese and his Sikelia Productions for him to direct Silence, based on a Japanese novel by Shusaku Endo about missionaries who are sent to Japan in 1683 to investigate reports of Christians being tortured by the emperor. Italian filmmaker Vittorio Cecchi Gori has been awarded more than $14 million (£8.75 million) in damages after winning a longrunning legal battle against 300 producer Gianna Nunnari.
The court war stems back to May 2008, when Nunnari served as president of the Rome-based Cecchi Gori Pictures, while also heading up his own firm in Los Angeles, titled Hollywood Gang Productions.
Nunnari was accused of taking advantage of film opportunities offered to Cecchi Gori and undertaking them as his own via his U.S. company. The projects involved include war epic 300, the Robert De Niro movie Everybody's Fine, and an upcoming film by Martin Scorsese, called Silence.
The case was heard in a bench trial last summer and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Amy Hogue delivered her decision on Friday, ruling in Cecchi Gori's favour, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Judge Hogue claimed Nunnari breached fiduciary duties and engaged in concealment and constructive fraud, citing his failure to recognise a "conflict of interest". Cecchi Gori was handed interest on top of the $14 million (£8.75 million) damages, boosting the figure to an estimated $18 million (£11.25 million).
Niels Juul, a representative for Cecchi Gori Pictures, says, "I'm very pleased that after two years of litigation, all this hard work has ended and Vittorio can now go back to producing movies."
As part of the ruling, Scorsese will now direct Silence for Cecchi Gori Pictures.

Deadline reported last fall on the lawsuit last Sepember that pitted former allies Vittorio Cecchi Gori against Gianni Nunnari, producers of some of Hollywood's larger movies the past few years. Cecchi Gori has released this press release claiming victory (a spokesman for Nunnari said that "We are obviously disappointed with the judge's decision and intend to appeal"): A final Statement of Decision in the lawsuit between Oscar-winning film producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori (Life Is Beautiful, Il Postino and Mediterraneo) and film producer Gianni Nunnari (the former President of Cecchi Gori Pictures) was entered on March 25, 2011 by Judge Amy D. Hogue in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. The Judgment awards Cecchi Gori $13,226,125 in damages, plus $2,608,075 in interest. In addition, Cecchi Gori was awarded future income from four films: 300, The Departed, Shutter Island, and Everybody’s Fine, and film rights and future income from four additional film projects: The Cyclone,...

For 300 producer Gianni Nunnari, the decision to sue former longtime employer Vittorio Cecchi Gori for getting axed in 2008 has so far proven as ill-advised as sending 300 Spartans to hold off the entire Persian army at Thermopylae. A rather stunning legal judgment was rendered last week by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Amy D. Hogue. Not only did she not embrace Nunnari’s assertion that he’d been wronged to the tune of $2.5 million when Cecchi Gori showed up unannounced in his L.A. offices and cleaned house., closing the Cecchi Gori Pictures outpost and firing the staff. In a tentative decision, the judge put Nunnari on the hook for nearly $14 million, for breaching his fiduciary duties as the head of Vcg’s Hollywood operations, and funneling choice film projects and fees to his own Hollywood Gang Productions shingle. The judge’s award to Cgp amounts to the fees earned...

- An L.A. Superior Court Judge has ruled (tentatively) in favor of Italian film mogul Vittorio Cecchi Gori (pictured, right) and against producer Gianni Nunnari (pictured, left) (The Departed, Shutter Island, 300, From Dusk Till Dawn). Gori, who produced with his father Mario best picture Oscar-nominee Il Postino [1994], is no stranger to bankruptcy. The L.A. judge ruled that Gori is entitled to almost $14 million in lost profits (from films including 300, Silence and Everybody's Fine) due to his ex-employee's conflict-of-interest on outside projects. Nunnari's lawyer maintained that Gori granted Nunnari permission to work on other projects that did not get in the way of his duties. Gori's lawyers, however, contended that Nunnari took advantage of his trust and dedicated his energy toward his ...

Producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori has named Niels Juul as temporary CEO of Cecchi Gori Pictures. Juul, a partner in the international brand recovery firm Nofatego, will be charged with restructuring the company and recovering lost assets.
Cecchi Gori, producer of such films as "Life is Beautiful" and "Il Postino," has been battling financial problems and bankruptcy proceedings.
"The Cecchi Gori name is a great brand with a history and integrity that means something in this industry, and I'm looking forward to bringing that name back to the forefront," Juul said.
Cecchi Gori Pictures most recently co-produced "Everybody’s Fine," starring Robert De Niro, and co-produced Fernando Trueba's "The Dancer and The Thief" (El baile de la Victoria).

Rome -- Beleaguered Italian move producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori, still searching for his first hit film since the start of the decade, said Thursday his next film will be about hunting.
Cecchi Gori, who produced Oscar winners "Mediterraneo," "Il Postino," and "La Vita e Bella," has been hounded by a host of financial and legal problems for several years. He has slowed from making an average of 10 films a year during his heyday in the 1990s to a total of just two since the end of 2005.
But the son of famed producer Mario Cecchi Gori said he is eyeing a comeback this year. He is a co-producer on Kirk Jones just-completed adventure comedy "Everybody's Fine" (which stars Robert De Niro and Drew Barrymore), while "El baile de la Victoria," a Spanish-language dance drama from Fernando Trueda, is in post-production.
He said his next film will be "La Dea della Caccia...

Rome -- Oscar-winning Italian film producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori, who was released from legal custody Tuesday, on Friday proclaimed his innocence and attacked his critics and the Italian justice system as biased against him.
In a scathing 40-minute diatribe in his private cinema in Rome's Renaissance-era Palazzo Borghese, Cecchi Gori, 68, blasted the investigators making the legal case against him, lawyers, the media, and the criminal justice system.
"In Italy, it takes five minutes to be accused and five years to be proved innocent," he told a packed crowd of journalists.
Flanked by four of his attorneys and, briefly, by his off-again-on-again girlfriend, 41-year-old showgirl Valeria Marini, Cecchi Gori said he was more appreciated in the U.S. than in Italy, and said he is demonized in Italy because few in the country understand the creative process.

Rome -- Beleaguered Oscar-winning Italian producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori was released from custody Tuesday after four months in prison and under house arrest for falsifying bankruptcy.
The producer behind three Oscar-winning films, including three-time winner "Life Is Beautiful," was arrested in June, attracting headlines in Italy and sympathy from leading industry figures. A Rome judge set his court date for Dec. 5.
Cecchi Gori, who became seriously ill in prison and was allowed to switch to house arrest in his spacious Palazzo Borghese apartment, maintains his innocence.

Geneva, Switzerland -- Vittorio Cecchi Gori is headed home from the hospital.
The Oscar-winning producer was arrested two months ago on charges of insolvency and jailed in Rome's minimum security Regina Coeli prison until July 9, when he was released and then hospitalized for undisclosed health problems. With his health improved, the embattled 66-year-old has been released from the hospital and will now be under house arrest in his sprawling Renaissance-era apartment in Rome's Palazzo Borghese.
But even though Cecchi Gori's accommodations have improved, his legal prospects have not. He is bankrupt and 25 million euros ($39.5 million) in debt -- his third bankruptcy since the 2002 failure of the Fiorentina soccer club.
Cecchi Gori has filed two counter-suits since March in what promises to be a long, drawn-out series of legal battles.

TAORMINA, Italy -- Italy's antitrust watchdog on Thursday ruled that the cinema exhibition sector's maintaining of barriers that block new entrants to the market is anti-competitive.
In a statement, the antitrust authority -- known officially as the Autorita Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato -- said that distributor policies that require cinema chains to show multiple prints of new films and limit the density of cinemas in urban areas -- make it more difficult for small operators to grow and for new operators to gain access to the market. It ordered the practices halted.
Although there is no timetable attached to the ruling, it will likely not go into full effect until the end of the year because it will require zoning laws to change. But the policies involving distributors' terms with cinema operators could go into effect sooner.
The news comes as one of the country's best-known cinema operators -- Vittorio Cecchi Gori -- had his 11-cinema chain closed, including the Cinema Adriano, Italy's most profitable cinema.

TAORMINA, Italy -- Beleaguered Italian film producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori received more bad news Monday when he learned that 11 cinemas he owns -- including Italy's most profitable cinema -- will be shuttered in connection with his ongoing financial troubles.
About 50 workers protested Monday outside Rome's Cinema Adriano, Italy's top-grossing cinema and the crown jewel of Cecchi Gori's cinema holdings.
The 66-year-old Cecchi Gori was apprehended by police this month and held in Rome's Regina Coeli Minimum Security Prison on charges of financial insolvency related to about 25 million euros ($38.7 million) in debt. It was the third bankruptcy of a Cecchi Gori holding since the failure of the Fiorentina soccer club he owned in 2002.
On Thursday, Cecchi Gori struck back, filing a 50 million euro ($77.4 million) lawsuit against soccer's organizing bodies in relation to the case of Fiorentina, his second major lawsuit since March.
Despite his financial troubles, Cecchi Gori remains best known for producing three films that have won a total of five Oscars, including three-time Oscar winner "La Vita e Bella" (Life Is Beautiful).

ROME -- Beleaguered Italian film producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori is discovering he has some high-profile friends in the wake of his arrest for insolvency.
Oscar winner Roberto Benigni and Oscar nominees Franco Zeffirelli and Mario Monicelli have leapt to his defense.
The 66-year-old Cecchi Gori -- who has produced three films that have won a total of five Oscars -- was arrested last week and detained in Rome's minimum security Regina Coeli prison on charges of nonpayment of about 25 million euros ($39.5 million) in unpaid debts.
Benigni, whose Oscar-winning World War II drama "Life Is Beautiful" was produced by Cecchi Gori, was quoted in the Italian press Wednesday as calling Cecchi Gori the "most generous person I know." Monicelli, meanwhile, said he was "at Cecchi Gori's side during this difficult time."
Earlier, Zeffirelli claimed that Cecchi Gori was in prison for being "a good person," adding that he suspected political motives behind the arrest.
Cecchi Gori was one of Italy's leading film figures until he started to run into financial difficulties after the 2002 collapse of the Fiorentina soccer club he owned.

ROME -- Oscar-winning film producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori told Italian journalists on Wednesday from Rome's Regina Coeli Minimum Security Prison that his arrest on charges of 25 million euros ($39.5 million) in debt and financial insolvency were a "misunderstanding."
Wednesday's newspapers were filled with news of the latest fall for the 66-year-old Cecchi Gori, whose films have won five Oscars. The articles detail Cecchi Gori's failed attempts to contact political figures to stave off being taken into custody and statements from his legal team maintaining his innocence.
Cecchi Gori brushed off the dramatic series of events that started Tuesday when he was apprehended in connection with failure to pay debts associated with this cinema management company Safin Cinematografica. It is not clear how long Cecchi Gori will be held in Regina Coeli, which is in Rome's bohemian neighborhood of Trastevere.
It is the third bankruptcy of a Cecchi Gori holding, following the 2002 failure of the Fiorentina soccer club and the collapse of the Gruppo Cecchi Gori production studios two years ago.

ROME -- One-time cinema tycoon Vittorio Cecchi Gori's financial woes took a turn for the worst Tuesday as he was arrested on charges of insolvency.
Calls to Cecchi Gori's Rome offices late Tuesday went unanswered. But the Italian media reported he was still in police custody as of late in the day.
Cecchi Gori, whose record as a producer includes five Oscars and a 2006 bankruptcy case, had been in the process of trying to resurrect his troubled career starting late last year. He did co-produce his first hit film in three years -- the interracial romantic comedy "Bianco e Nero" (Black and White) -- and founded a new production company called New Capital. But he repeatedly ran into financial troubles.
The latest round of problems came to a head in March, when a Rome tribunal seized an estimated 100 million euros ($158 million) in Cecchi Gori property, including the prized Cinema Adriano, Italy's most lucrative multiplex in terms of per-screen revenue.

"300" producer Gianni Nunnari and his Hollywood Gang Prods. has filed suit against Cecchi Gori Pictures, claiming the company forced him out of their joint Los Angeles office, seizing valuable property and proprietary business information.
Nunnari had served as president and CEO for Cecchi Gori Pictures, run by Vittorio Cecchi Gori, since 2003. Last month, he claims he was evicted from the office and has not yet received a $2.5 million severance.
At the center of the controversy is a remake of a Cecchi Gori Italian-language film "Stanno Tutti Bene". Nunnari claims he negotiated a deal for the remake with Miramax called "Everybody's Fine", to star Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale.
Nunnari claims Cecchi Gori sent a letter to Miramax indicating the producer had no legal right to authorize any such agreement.
Nunnari's claims in the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, include breach of contract, invasion of privacy, libel and fraud. He seeks at least $2.975 million in damages.

ROME -- Trouble continued for veteran Italian film producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori on Friday, as more than 100 million euros ($154 million) of his property -- including the country's top cinema -- were seized by a Rome tribunal.
The move comes as the 65-year-old producer uses up his last appeal on charges that he transferred assets from his production company before declaring bankruptcy in 2006 in order to escape the grasp of creditors.
Two courts have found that the assets ended up under the control of a Virgin Islands holding company called Jonquille Associated, which is controlled by a Cecchi Gori holding in Luxembourg. Cecchi Gori, meanwhile, has maintained his innocence and is preparing his third and final appeal.
According to legal documents, the tribunal seized ownership of property scattered across Italy, including Rome's storied nine-screen Cinema Adriano, the country's most popular cinema in terms of per-screen revenue. Dozens of other cinemas, buildings and equipment were also taken under custody.

ROME -- Beleaguered Italian producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori has filed a lawsuit of historic proportions in a Rome court, asking for more than $1 billion from Italy's Communications Authority, alleging that the regulator's unwarranted decisions has caused him untold financial damage.
The headline-grabbing suit filed Friday is based predominantly on decisions handed down in relation to Telemontecarlo and MTV-Italia, TV networks Cecchi Gori controlled until 2001. Telemontecarlo has been transformed into La 7, the main holding of Telecom Italia Media and the only national network not owned by Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset or state broadcaster RAI.
Cecchi Gori's office confirmed news of the lawsuit, in which he is asking for $1.38 billion in damages.
Legal experts said Cecchi Gori would set a legal precedent if he were awarded significant damages because regulators in Italy rarely are held accountable for the financial repercussions of their decisions.
Additionally, the fact that the case is nearly seven years old and that there is so far limited indication that the authority's decisions regulating the sales of the television holdings were unfair likely would work against Cecchi Gori's legal team.
