Eighties television was a land of new ideas that hadn’t been seen before. It was also a place where old tropes were made shiny and new with a modern sheen that intrigued audiences and would produce classics like the hospital drama St. Elsewhere and the crime drama Hill Street Blues.
It would be a humdinger of a decade within the genre of mystery and detectives. It would see the return of the iconic detective Mike Hammer in a new series and would also bring us the dramedy Moonlighting. We’d also be treated to one of the greatest performances of Sherlock Holmes ever with the amazing Jeremy Brett.
It would also bring us a female detective who, in a world filled with male counterparts, couldn’t catch a break until she made up her own male counterpart in a boss named Remington Steele. The rest, as they say, is history,...

By the time Halloween wraps up, most people have tucked away their pumpkins and spider webs in favour of colourful wreaths and Santa figurines. For horror fans, it means Krampus and blood covered snow now take centre stage. The holiday of Christmas naturally lends itself to the horror genre, spawning favourites that include Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Rare Exports, and more. However, many films are too gruesome for younger people to enjoy.
To let children in on the festive and frightful fun, here is a variety of age-appropriate Christmas horror film and television specials the entire family can enjoy.
Creeped Out: Splinta Claws (2019)

Robert Butler, who directed the pilots for a number of classic TV series including “Batman,” “Star Trek” and “Hill Street Blues,” has died at the age of 95.

The director was the cocreator of Pierce Brosnan series “Remington Steele” and directed its pilot. His credits also included work on “The Blue Knight,” “Hawaii Five-o,” “The Waltons” and more.

“Moonlighting” was more than a watercooler show. It was an obsession. Episodes were taped and rewatched. And for good reason. There had never been a anything on the small screen like the 1985-89 ABC romantic screwball comedy detective series. The rapid-fire dialogue recalled such Howard Hawks’ classics as 1938’s ‘Bringing Up Baby” and 1940’ “His Girl Friday.” Fourth walls were broken. There was a black-and-white episode and even and wild and crazy take on William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” That was just the tip of the innovations.
Creator and executive producer Glenn Gordon Caron told me in a 2000 L.A. Times interview that ABC didn’t give him total freedom when it came to the episodes: “The truth is no one let me do everything. I just did it. Ignorance is bliss. There were rules and I chose not to listen to anybody. At a certain point, the network said- ‘This is working.

NBC could have had a big hit with the reboot it planned for Remington Steele. Quite a terrific genre-blending series, the romantic comedy-drama is often credited for launching Pierce Brosnan‘s career. The trendsetting show co-created by Robert Butler and Michael Gleason was first broadcast on NBC from October 1982 to February 1987; it aired for five seasons, with a total of 94 episodes. Though it drew mixed critical reviews while it ran, Remington Steele has aged well as it is now looked on as an innovative show that pioneered various elements that are habitual to contemporary television shows. I interviewed Pierce Brosnan in conjunction with his third outing as James Bond, in Michael Apted's The World Is Not Enough, in 1999. Brosnan was alternately charming, erudite, thoughtful and intense during our two hour chat. His native intelligence shone through it all, as did a sense of decency which many people seem to acquire after enduring and surviving hardship in their formative years.

Yes, Birdman is for real. If there was any lingering doubt that industry awards voters are dead serious about honoring a movie that is about a lot of things but especially about themselves, the DGA’s top honor erased those questions. Now after triumphing at the PGA, winning the SAG Ensemble Cast prize and DGA Directorial Achievement Award for Alejandro G. Inarritu this movie has flown past the competition and left what was thought to be a front runner, Boyhood, in its dust. It’s an important moment for the film as its victory occurred on the very weekend Oscar balloting begins.
The Boyhood momentum was created by critics and pundits based on its sweep through the critics portion of the season where it pulled a Social Network by winning everything right thru the Golden Globes for 2010, only to be trounced by The King’s Speech once the Guild prizes started rolling in.

Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu has scooped the top honour at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards.
Iñárritu won Best Feature Film Director ahead of nominees for American Sniper, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game.
In his acceptance speech, the director claimed that filmmaking is not as hard as it used be, stating: "To make a good film we all know is war, and we have just to survive it. If this is considered a great film, it doesn't have anything to do with me. It's a miracle."
Laura Poitras picked up the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for Citizenfour.
On accepting the award, she said: "This is an incredible time to be a documentary filmmaker. People are doing work that is incredibly groundbreaking and risk-taking."
Lisa Cholodenko claimed the TV movie or miniseries prize for her two-part HBO drama Olive Kitteridge.

"Birdman" helmer Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Directors Guild of America's (DGA) award for best direction of a motion picture Saturday night, effectively firming up his film's march into the Oscars later this month. The Michael Keaton comedy also took top honors from both the Producers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild. With the DGA prize it joins films like "Argo," "The King's Speech," "Slumdog Millionaire," "No Country for Old Men," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," "Chicago," "American Beauty" and "Apollo 13" as the only films to pull off the hat trick. Only one of those, "Apollo 13," failed to win the Best Picture Oscar. So it's more or less settled, right? I confess, coming into the industry awards phase of the season, I didn't expect "Birdman" to dominate like this. And maybe that was ultimately its secret weapon. Everyone had their eyes on "Boyhood.

CNN has withdrawn its financial support of the National Association of Black Journalists for the 2015 Convention and Career Fair. Nabj president Bob Butler made the announcement at the organization's Board of Directors meeting. In a statement issued last week, “Nabj Concerned About Atmosphere at CNN for African-Americans,” Nabj expressed concern over the large number of African-American staff members leaving and being fired from the cable news network. Several African-American anchors have left the anchor desk or CNN altogether in the past few years. See photos: The Scene at TheGrill 2014: TheWrap's Media Leadership Conference (Photos) Following the release, CNN contacted Butler and.

Late in the DVD commentary for the pilot episode of "Hill Street Blues," actor Joe Spano marvels at the show's impact on the medium. "It's extraordinary," he says, "the repercussions of this 48 minutes of television." The cop drama's co-creator Steven Bochco follows by suggesting, "It's sort of a family tree, and if you look at the branches of the tree, you'll see 25 years of television." Bochco is, if anything, underselling the importance of "Hill Street," which is on the short list of the most influential TV shows ever made. Whether through shared actors, writers, directors or through stylistic and thematic complexity, its DNA can be found in nearly every great drama produced in the 30-plus years since it debuted. The show was only occasionally interested in the legal trials of the criminals in its unnamed fictional city, but the complete series DVD set (it arrives in stores on Tuesday, for...

Liam Neeson's flight in Non-stop is a first class joyride compared to. Turbulence (1997) Director: Robert Butler Stars: Ray Liotta, Lauren Holly, Brendan Gleeson A stewardess.excuse me, flight attendant.has the worst flight ever when a serial killer takes over the plane. It's probably not a good sign when the thing I remember most about a movie is that the trailer featured a White Zombie song. But alas, that is the case with Turbulence, a B-grade "killer...

Star Trek is a beloved series and, thanks to its longevity in syndication and on DVD, its sequels, and its recent big-screen reboot, it remains as pop-culturally present now as it’s perhaps ever been. The USS Enterprise and her crew have become iconic but as with most shows, Star Trek faced a difficult development process. The series shot two very different pilots, “The Cage” and “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, neither of which were actually used to premiere the show to audiences. That privilege went to “The Man Trap”, and while...

I had no idea someone made a sequel to director Robert Butler’s low-rent Ray Liotta thriller “Turbulence”, let alone two. So you can probably imagine my surprise when I happened upon a random copy of “Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal” on VHS at a local antique mall. For a whopping $1, I was treated to what appeared to be three separate movies edited together into one needlessly complicated thriller. The story concerns itself with a Marilyn Manson-style rock star who stages a private show aboard a 747 as its flying across the United States. Before long, the passengers are treated taken hostage by their goth hero, who intends to crash the plane into the most evil location on the entire planet: Eastern Kansas. Now, it’s up to some random FBI boss (Joe Mantegna), one of his startlingly sexy agents (Gabrielle Anwar), and a hippie hacker (Craig Sheffer) to stop this...

A play-by-play review of all Star Trek Original Series episodes. We start with The Cage, the unaired first pilot for the show that was completed in early 1965, though never broadcast on television fully until 1988.

The theme is all… different.
That’s the first thing you notice. It’s different.
And not in a good way.
This was made well before the series, and while it is still recognizable, it is also very different. The bridge is different:
And that’s just the first shot.
This is not what we would call advanced science fiction. In fact, Voyager watchers will understand what I mean when I say I expect Captain Proton to chase Satan’s Robot and Chaotica across the bridge any second, especially when they are having trouble telling the difference between a “meteroroid” and a radio wave to the point where Spock,...
