Sting has come to Broadway, as both composer of the new musical The Last Ship and, more recently, in an effort to improve the show's struggling box office numbers, one of its stars onstage. The show itself, while having some book and story flaws, ultimately emerges as an engrossing, touching musical, with an impressive and melodic score that serves the story and the characters. It is an often stirring tribute to the human spirit.
The musical, inspired by Sting's own experiences growing up, takes place in the streets and shipyard of Wallsend, in the northeast end of England. The town and its residents are having problems, as the shipyard has been closed down. For reasons that don't entirely make sense, the residents are inspired to build one last ship. The Last Ship deals with familiar themes: father/son relationships, an economically depressed town, the lure of the sea, and the...

British actor Douglas Hodge has won over critics with his Broadway debut opposite Kelsey Grammer in a revival of musical comedy La Cage Aux Folles.
The Harvey Fierstein song and dance show about a camp gay couple first appeared on Broadway in 1983, and was revived in 2004, opening to rave reviews.
Hodge originally played the role of drag queen Albin on the London stage in 2008, winning a Laurence Olivier award for his performance - and he impressed theatre critics once again when the show opened in New York on Sunday.
A critic from the New York Times called Hodge's performance "a bravura Broadway debut", adding that he and Grammer were "equally disarming" on stage.
However, Grammer's performance as nightclub owner Georges, Albin's partner of 20 years, was met with mixed reactions.
A reviewer from the New York Post writes, "Olivier-winning star Douglas Hodge in action, we'll take it. Kelsey Grammer may be the draw for local audiences, but the show is Hodge's alone... (Grammer) looks more stiff than necessary."
Overall, the actors and their "uniformly excellent" supporting cast - including Fred Applegate, Veanne Cox, Chris Hoch, Elena Shaddow, A. J. Shively, Christine Andreas and Robin de Jesus - proved to be a hit with reviewers.
A critic from industry trade publication Daily Variety praised the cast and crew, calling director Terry Johnson's production "tenderly affecting".

Dear Michael:i am a 30-year-old actor who's often told he looks 25. I started in this business some nine years ago because of a fascination with musical theater. Over the years, having matured and become more open-minded, I've expanded my interests and training to other areas, and I'm now hoping to have a career that encompasses anything from Shakespeare to "All My Children" to "Dolly." I must admit, I'm realizing that my chances of succeeding in musical theater are slim, because I don't have the look that seems to so inevitably go with it. I am what you'd call a character man. I'm not overweight, but I'm not a square-jawed hunk either. I take care of how I look and what I eat, but still don't look like I've come out of Vogue. You might ask, "Why do you feel that way? There are character types in musicals." Certainly, but it...
