Steven Soderbergh will make his theatrical producing debut with The Fears, a new work premiering Off-Broadway this spring.
The play, written by Emma Sheanshang (Every Girl Gets Her Man, Greetings From Tim Buckley) and directed by Dan Algrant (Sex and the City, People I Know), will run at the Irene Diamond Stage at The Pershing Square Signature Center in New York starting April 25. Opening night is scheduled for May 18.
Soderbergh most recently directed Magic Mike’s Last Dance, after breaking out with films such as Traffic, Erin Brockovich and the Ocean’s series. In addition to his film work, Soderbergh has worked as a theatrical director, creating and directing the play Tot Mom at the Sydney Theatre Company in December 2009 and directing the world premiere of Scott Z. Burns’ play The Library at New York’s Public Theater in April 2014. He said he was drawn to this piece because of the writing.

Daniel Algrant.s career consists of three films produced with nearly a decade in between each project, as he followed 2002.s mediocre crime drama People I Know with this year.s biopic Greetings From Tim Buckley. But instead of waiting until 2022 to begin work on something else, he is lining up another interesting music-based film called Little Rootie Tootie, which has attracted the likes of Christopher Walken and Lenny Kravitz as its leads. I assume the film will eventually add the subtitle Are You Gonna Go My Way With More Cowbell. According to Deadline, the film will follow Walken as Sonny, a lifelong jazz pianist mourning the recent death of his wife. As Sonny becomes increasingly destructive, his son (Kravitz) returns home from Europe, where he and his wife are successful musicians in their own right. The three of them attempt to function as a well-oriented family, but the eccentric...

Whether Christopher Walken is lighting up The Deer Hunter, dancing for Fatboy Slim or just prepping a chicken, you can pretty much count us in. His musical gifts are well-known and well-loved too, and lately they have parlayed more and more into big screen roles. He was terrific in Yaron Zilberman's A Late Quartet, has a part lined up in Clint Eastwood's take on the Jersey Boys musical and, reports Deadline, will be appearing next in Dan Algrant's jazz flick Little Rootie Tootie. Walken will take the role of jazz pianist Sonny in a film named after piano great Thelonius Monk's track. Mourning the death of his wife, his increasingly volatile behaviour prompts his son, another successful jazz man played by Lenny Kravitz, to fly back from Europe with his wife and head him off before he self-destructs altogether.According to Deadline: "The trio tries to present...

Plain ol’ everyday Christopher Walken is terrific just the way he is. The strange deadpan. The madness in his eyes. All great. But Christopher Walken set to music is even greater, and Little Rootie Tootie may provide us all with something we didn’t know we desperately needed. Walken has, according to Deadline, signed on to star as a virtuoso jazz pianist who slowly spirals into madness after losing his wife. One has to ask, of course, whether Walken would really “slowly spiral” into madness, or just “take a slight step to the left” into madness, but that’s hardly the point. Little Rootie Tootie may provide the opportunity to see a far jazzier Walken than we’ve ever experienced before (at least, not since 1981′s Pennies From Heaven, which features a Walken-centric musical number you absolutely track down on YouTube). Alongside Walken is Lenny Kravitz, who joins Little Rootie Tootie as the unstable pianist’s son...

Christopher Walken and Lenny Kravitz have signed on for Dan Algrant's "Little Rootie Tootie". Filming kicks off in January in New York City.
Walken will play a veteran jazz pianist mourning the death of his wife. His son (Kravitz) returns home with his own wife, disrupting the couple’s careers as musicians in Europe, to deal with his increasingly manic and destructive father.
Trying to appear as a functioning family, the eccentricities inherent in being working musicians leads them toward a tragic but impactful conclusion.
Algrant, Stan Erdreich, Fred Zollo and Paul Condoleon will produce, while Grammy winner Terence Blanchard will be scoring.

People can, at times, simultaneously feel conflicting emotions of love and hate towards any person they have an intimate relationship with, particularly their parents. While it can be difficult to understand other people’s motivations, people learn to come to terms and understand the actions others take as they mature. This is the intense motivating factor in director Daniel Algrant’s new drama, Greetings From Tim Buckley, which is based on the true story of the title musician. Greetings from Tim Buckley
A promising young musician visits New York for a week to headline a tribute concert. He bonds with a young woman interning at the performance space, and they run around the city being chatty, artistic, and physically beautiful together. These would be the makings of a light and romantic film, except that the young man portrayed is musician Jeff Buckley in his early twenties and the concert he's been called for honors his father, prolific and renowned musician Tim Buckley, who breezed away from Jeff's mother before Jeff was born and died at age 28 without knowing his first child.
Greetings from Tim Buckley takes place in 1991. Tim Buckley is a beloved figure with a legacy; Jeff has musical gifts and a physical resemblance to his dad, but he has not yet established his own career. Nor does he think highly of his father: to him, Tim Buckley...

After making the rounds at film festivals in 2012, "Greetings from Tim Buckley" comes out in a limited theatrical release on Friday. While the film itself is mostly getting panned (director Daniel Algrant did not even get the rights to Buckley's music!) by critics, Penn Badgley's performance as Tim's son, the ultimately more famous Jeff Buckley, has received praise. The "Gossip Girl" actor took on a challenging role that included quite a bit of live singing -- and mimicking a voice like Jeff Buckley's is a tall order for any actor. David Fear,...

Spring has arrived -- flowers and music in full bloom. Some of it only hints at what might be as summer approaches. Until then, here are few things I'm carting around in my wheelbarrow. Dig it.
"Spiderlegs" Danny Malone: Balloons (Dm)
Happy accident as I had no prior knowledge of Mr. Malone prior to listening to his new album, but no worries. Here's a wonderful folk-rock tune from this Austin-based singer/songwriter's second long-player. He recorded this set of confessional musings in a haunted 15th century castle in Denmark, each song in a different room. He calls his music "sexy, dirty, sad songs about the human condition." This remains my favorite track; and the video below is pretty bloody "sexy" too.

Daniel Algrant’s Greetings from Tim Buckley is supposed to be Penn Badgley’s revelatory moment as an actor. Playing singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, Badgley sings live on set and sounds eerily similar to Buckley as he goes into his upper register and harmonizes in abstract ways. Unfortunately, Badgley’s performance ultimately feels empty, as does the film as a whole. Despite being focused on real, complicated people with tragic lives (both at the height of their fame, Jeff’s father Tim died at 28 from an accidental overdose and Jeff drowned at 30), the film never allows the two Buckleys to come across as fully realized characters. It’s 1991 and Jeff Buckley is living in California, a struggling musician. Out of the blue, he gets a call asking him to come to Brooklyn to perform in a tribute concert for his father, who he only met twice in his lifetime. Jeff is bitter about the whole situation – celebrating the...

How do you tell a father and son story when they never knew each other? President Barack Obama achieved it in his contemplative best selling memoir, .Dreams of My Father" in which his biological father figures as a cipher that nevertheless casts an influential shadow over his entire life. Filmmaker Daniel Algrant faced a similar dilemma in telling the story of musical artists Tim Buckley and his son Jeff Buckley with the added challenge that neither is alive today. The result is a contemplative docudrama that explores the Buckley relationship by using a real-life 1991 tribute concert for Jeff in which son Tim is asked to participate and, in the reality of the film,...

The trailer for the new Jeff Buckley film, Dan Algrant's "Greetings from Tim Buckley," has finally arrived on YouTube, showing a flannel-clad Penn Badgley belting it out on stage.
The movie, which lands at Tribeca Film Festival this month, centers on the younger Buckley's breakout 1991 performance -- a tribute show to his father and American avant-garde musician, Tim Buckley. The concert is widely viewed as the start of the younger Buckley's stint in show business, a career tragically cut short by his death at the age of 30.

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming drama Greetings From Tim Buckley, which is based on the rise of musical artist Jeff Buckley. Buckley was a very talented musician whose life was cut short when he died unexpectedly at the age of 30 in 1997. The movie was directed by Dan Algrant (People I Know, Naked in New York), and it stars Penn Badgely (Gossip Girl) as Jeff; Imogen Poots as Buckley's love interest, Allie; and Ben Rosenfield as Jeff's dad, Tim. The movie looks fantastic and everyone looks like they do a terrific job. I'm a fan of Buckley's music, and I'm looking forward to seeing this. Here's the synopsis for the film...
In 1991, a young Jeff Buckley rehearses for his public singing debut at a Brooklyn tribute show for his father, the late folk singer Tim Buckley. Struggling with the legacy of a man he barely knew, Jeff...

The first trailer of Dan Algrant's "Greetings from Tim Buckley," the completed Jeff Buckley biopic out of the two, shows two great musicians struggling in their own eras. While "Mystery White Boy" has had little movement lately, Algrant's film has been described as more than a biopic and instead an examination of father and son through music. The film stars Penn Badgley ("Gossip Girl") as Jeff Buckley, the singer-songwriter of the '90s who died at age 30. He was the son of the great American musician Tim Buckley, played by newcomer Ben Rosenfield. "Greetings from Tim Buckley," which screened at Toronto last year, leads up to Jeff's famous 1991 singing debut at his father's tribute concert in St. Anne's Church in Brooklyn. Jeff struggles with his bitterness toward his father who abandoned him and died at age 28 in 1977. The film charts both Jeff in 1991 as he prepares for the concert...

A fact-based movie Greetings From Tim Buckley follows the path of musician Jeff Buckley played by Penn Badgley with Imogen Poots as an intriguing young woman who influences his life and career. Dan Algrant-directed biopic drama premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9th, 2012 to generally positive reviews. We shared some images from the whole thing, as well as the first trailer. New trailer gives a taste of the soundtrack along with Badgley and Poots impressive performances. Besides, Badgley doesn’t look much like the late singer, but he delivers exactly what’s needed for the character. The film will be available on...

Later this year, the Coen Brothers will dive into the 60's folk music scene in Greenwich Village through their film Inside Llewyn Davis starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake. But before that, director Dan Algrant will go back to the 90s in Greetings from Tim Buckley to follow the path of musician Jeff Buckley as he comes to terms with the legacy of his father, living in the famous folk musician's shadow and discovering his own voice, literally and figuratively. Penn Badgley plays the young Buckley with Imogen Poots as an intriguing young woman who influences his life and career. The trailer gives a taste of the soundtrack and impressive performances, and it looks like a decent enough drama. Watch it! Here's the first trailer for Dan Algrant's Greetings from Tim Buckley, originally from Apple: Greetings from Tim Buckley tells the true story of the days leading...

The long-awaited Jeff Buckley biopic stars Penn Badgley (Gossip Girl) as the 'Hallelujah' singer, and Imogen Poots as his love interest Allie.
Directed by Daniel Algrant, the film centres on the hours leading up to Buckley's legendary 1991 performance of his father's songs.

Greetings from Tim Buckley will be released in Us cinemas and on demand on April 16, with a UK release date yet to be set.

In anticipation of the Tribeca Film Festival, the first-looks keep moving along. Let’s start with new photos from "Greetings from Tim Buckley," the quasi-look at the life of singer Jeff Buckley as he performs a concert for his father, Tim. The film, directed by Daniel Algrant, and starring Penn Badgley and Imogen Poots, will be getting its U.S. premiere in the Narrative category at Tribeca. Here's the synopsis: “Like father, like son” is a demanding expression for someone who never knew his dad. When young Jeff Buckley (Penn Badgley) is asked to participate in a tribute concert for his late musician father Tim, music opens his eyes to the artistic legacy that he is destined to follow. Imogen Poots co-stars in this quiet and powerful tribute to those legends sustained by admiration, love and, in this case, beautiful music. When "Greetings from Tim Buckley" played the Toronto International Film Festival in September,...

Reeve Carney might sling some Spidey web your way night after night as the star of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” but soon he’s about to take on another larger-than-life character. He’s set to play Jeff Buckley in a big-screen adaptation of the legendary musician’s life.
Carney, a real-life musician himself, recently chatted with MTV News about re-imagining the “Last Goodbye” singer for “Welcome to the Rileys” director Jake Scott. And if Buckley fans are nervous about Carney taking on the part, they shouldn’t be: he has the blessing of Buckley’s mom for the role.
“I mean his mother has been so kind to me saying I spent my whole life preparing for this. In a way, I guess, it’s true in a sense," said Carney. "I mean I first heard about him when I was 16, which was two years after he passed away,...

Blame a 2012 Toronto Int. Film Fest edition that was simply too stuffed to the gills to present the film at a better venue (it played thrice – a pair of screenings at the Bloor Hot Docs theatre and once at the multiplex), Dan Algrant’s Greetings from Tim Buckley might stand a better chance at wowing future audiences as it just landed a distribution deal where Tribeca Film will handle theatrical in 2013 and Focus World will diffuse the biopic via the VOD route.

Tribeca Film, in cooperation with Focus World, has acquired the U.S Rights to Greetings from Tim Buckley, a fascinating portrait of two generations of musicians: Tim Buckley, the famous folk rock star, and his son, Jeff Buckley. Featuring a riveting performance by Penn Badgley (Margin Call, Gossip Girl), this film will appeal to both movie fans and music lovers. Since the world premiere of Greetings from Tim Buckley at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, the film has generated considerable buzz and positive reviews. The Hollywood Reporter, for example, raves about the film's 'urgent originality' that springs from Penn Badgley's 'vibrant, break-out performance' and from Dan Algrant's 'lyrical recreation of a father-son relationship through memory and music.' Directed by Dan Algrant and co-written by Algrant, Emma Sheanshang and David Brendel, the film features, in addition to Badgley, Imogen Poots (A Late Quartet) and Ben Rosenfield as Tim Buckley.

I participated in a Dreamago panel moderated by WGA-West VP and USC film writing prof and an artistic director at the Sundance Institute Wrting Labs, Howard Rodman.
Other panelists included Vince Fischer who, having been educated and working in Paris, Montreal, New York in business and advertising, event production, and creating the endorsement agency GlamCom which initiates deals between celebrities and products, such as he did with George Clooney and Nespresso, has gone on to create Artistic Alliance Eci which represents screenwriters, directors and actors with offices in Beijing, L.a. and Paris, to match people and projects abroad. He is curretnly developing an original miniseries for HBO for the Russian Market and a crime drama for Sreda in Moscow.
Paula Manzanedo-Schmitt is VP of Film Finances Inc. the world leader in completion guarantees. She has been involved in more than 1,000 films and TV programs internationally and in U.S. She spoke of the various cross-cultural requisites in film production abroad.
The discussion centered around whether filmmakers could make a film without the notorioius interference of studios (they should all be so lucky as to have this problem). In other words, the panelists discussed their experiences making films with Russians and Chinese. All agreed that working abroad, and especially with international sales agents who also produce allows for greater freedom of vision (although in China the reward is writng so that China censorship does not interfere because one has written to their specifications). All agreed also that there is a certain cross-cultural divide one must discover in order to work effectively.
My suggestions for finding a way to create without corporate interferences are listed below:
** Coproduce with Canada who has the most coproduction treaties in the world, or go directly to producers or sales agents who do not rely on treaties.
** Work with international sales agents who produce international coproductions which include U.S., or with the producers of those films who now have established track records.

Dolce Vita both produced by Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo, and Gabor Kalomista, a Los Angeles based company with Hungarian born principals. The synopsis of Immigrants is worth repeating: More people immigrate to America than to all other countries in the whole world combined. Why? Is it because they love hot dogs and hamburgers? Or because they want to meet Snoop Dogg or have a close encounter with Pamela Anderson? Maybe. But the real reason is – immigrants go to the U.S. to chase the American dream. Immigrants is the story of Vladislav (a Russian), and Joska (a Hungarian). Both are immigrants and best friends, living and chasing the American dream together. Vlad has a daughter, Ana, who’s adapting to life in America at the speed of light, while her dad is in complete culture shock. They stay at the Vista del Mar, an apartment complex run by an old failed actress, Greta Knight, who is always after Vlad for sexual favors. The building is home to immigrants from all over the world: Flaco, a friend from Mexico; Mr. Chea, who runs a Chinese family restaurant; Nazim, a former Pakistani nuclear scientist who drives a tour bus; and Mr. Splits, an old black pimp. We follow Vlad and Joska in their adventures… through their encounter with the American capitalist company Glut-co, through their attempt to open a Russian/Hungarian restaurant, and as their friendship is put in jeopardy when they hit the L.A. night scene. All the while Vlad is looking for a way to make a life for himself and his daughter; and Joska… well, Joska is mainly looking for women.

Hungaricom Ltd (Hungary) has the English language animated comedy feature The Secret of Moonacre and Immigrants - L.A.

The story of Jeff Buckley is a rather tragic one. The son of singer-songwriter Tim Buckley, Jeff showed an incredible amount of promise as a musician himself, cutting a studio album with Columbia Records, but saw his life tragically cut short at the age of 30 when he accidentally drowned in the Mississippi River. He will long be remembered for his album, .Grace,. and his cover of Leonard Cohen.s .Hallelujah,. but now a film has been made to commemorate his memory as well. The first trailer for Greetings From Tim Buckley, which was directed and co-written by Daniel Algrant, has arrived online. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, stars Penn Badgley as Jeff Buckley as well as Imogen Poots, William Sadler and Ben Rosenfield and you can watch the preview below. The film will focus on the early years of Buckley.s life and...
