Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi achieved notoriety in 1962 with the sensationalistic documentary Mondo Cane, a globetrotting exposé of bizarre rites and other human grotesqueries that opened the floodgates for a deluge of Mondo titles. When the release of their 1966 film Africa Addio (a.k.a. Africa: Blood and Guts), a despairing look at the continent’s decolonization movements, led to accusations of racism, Jacopetti and Prosperi sought to address the charges by revealing (some would say reveling in) the history of slavery in America. The resulting film, Goodbye Uncle Tom, is an extremely disturbing, at times almost unwatchable, descent into the inferno of an unpardonable institution.
Goodbye Uncle Tom leaves any pretense of objectivity behind in the dust. Using a conceit similar to such Peter Watkins classics as Culloden and The War Game, Jacopetti and Prosperi’s film brings modern-day documentary technology back into a historical setting, using it in...

While Italian genre cinema generated its fair share of classics throughout the ’70s and ’80s, filmmakers during that period were also quick to exploit successful trends. Lax copyright protections gave way to Italian rip-offs of such hits as The Exorcist, Jaws, Dawn of the Dead, Alien, The Evil Dead, and Mad Max, to name a few.
Not even Italy’s own productions were safe from imitation, as the cannibal subgenre proved. While 1972’s Man from Deep River is often cited as the originator, the international notoriety of Cannibal Holocaust ushered in the cannibal boom in 1980. Man from Deep River director Umberto Lenzi helmed another one of the subgenre’s highlights, Cannibal Ferox (originally released in the US as Make Them Die Slowly), in 1981.
Shot on location in the Amazon, the film follows three Americans to the Colombian jungles in search of an alleged cannibal village. Unfortunately for them, they find...

Nino Rota’s soundtrack for Federico Fellini’s 1976 film “Il Casanova,” which is getting a re-release via Italian record label Cam Sugar, has been a favorite of Alexandre Desplat’s ever since the Oscar-winning French composer first listened to it at 15 years old.
The magnificently staged film stars Donald Sutherland as the legendary 18th-century Venetian adventurer Giacomo Casanova, who sought wealthy patrons and sexual encounters as he traveled from Venice to Paris, London, Germany, Rome and Austria, where he makes love to a mechanical doll.
The 27 remastered tracks on Rota’s “Casanova” score are being re-released by Cam Sugar in collaboration with Decca Records on Feb. 10, both digitally and on vinyl. They feature compositions on the edge of classical and electronic music, making use of a wide range of instruments including harpsichord, vibraphone and electric piano.

“La Dolce Vita” inspired a sweet flash mob performance of the iconic film score in Rome.
Composer Nino Rota crafted the soundtrack to Federico Fellini’s Oscar-winning 1960 classic about a tabloid journalist (Marcello Mastroianni) who searches for the beauty of Rome over the course of a week. The soundtrack is getting a re-release via record label Cam Sugar, and led to an impromptu performance of select “Dolce Vita” songs in front of the iconic Trevi Fountain in Rome.
The 10-piece Orchestra Roma Sinfonietta performed in the flash mob, organized by automaker Fiat along with the Rome Film Festival to promote the “La Dolce Vita” newly remastered re-release soundtrack, out October 21. The 14 tracks will be available on digital and vinyl.

It’s a Cold War thriller in the steamy tropics! The Reds are making their move in Malaya and four vibrant people are caught in the crosshairs: rich rubber planter William Holden, revolutionary strategist Tetsuro Tanba, peaceful teacher and activist Capucine, and adventurous Governor’s daughter Susannah York. Director Lewis Gilbert keeps a rickety script on its feet drama-wise and superb cinematography (Freddie Young) and impressive music (Riz Ortolani) do the rest. The show ended up being most noted for a nude swimming scene scooped in the pages of Playboy.

Hey everyone! Before we bid adieu to the year 2021, we have one last batch of home media releases on the horizon this week, including two great Sundance films—Mayday and Knocking—and one of my favorite movie discoveries of the last few years, Seven Deaths in the Cat’s Eyes, which is getting a Blu-ray from Twilight Time. Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 28th include Venom (1971) aka The Legend of the Spider Forest, The Cropsey Incident, Bigfoot Creek, and Red Snow.

The newest addition to the stable of horror and sci-fi on Ultra HD is Dario Argento’s debut feature, the game-changer that launched the full-blown giallo thriller. Argento takes a few twists from the Hitchcock playbook but otherwise shapes his whodunnit with a new, slick style of his own. Cinematography by Vittorio Storaro and design by Dario Micheli emphasize visual texture and tactility — we contemplate soft skin, slippery plastic and sharp straight razors. The horrors embrace architecture and high fashion, exchanging visual fetishes for psychological depth. And don’t forget a typically eccentric Ennio Morricone music score. As always, Arrow includes a full menu of extra delights.

Part of our on-going series Notebook Soundtrack Mixes.Forever on the edge of one's seat, giallo is the provider of all the glamorous and hallucinatory emotions. The film genre and its musical sister is somewhat a crown jewel when it comes to detailed niches, sub-genres, and die hard fans. Original LP records from the giallo genre can cost a hefty sum and the blossoming vinyl reissuing industry (an exciting addition over recent decades) proves how enduring the genre and its sub-genres are. This giallo bonanza comes in just shy of two hours and you will find both influential and cherished moments and secluded moments on the sidelines. That, for me, showcases its textures and ultimately what a fun, trippy genre it is. The work of the masters is in full swing, beloved composers such as Bruno Nicolai, Nora Orlandi, Riz Ortolani, and Goblin all have turns. And of course, the...

When it comes to releasing unique and collectible Blu-ray box sets (such as their Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection), Severin Films has done an amazing job preserving horror history, and this summer they'll continue to do so with The Complete Lenzi Baker Giallo Collection, featuring Umberto Lenzi's collaborations with Carroll Baker:
"On June 30th, Severin Films is bringing together the complete collaborative works of two cult film legends with The Complete Lenzi Baker Giallo Collection, which includes superlative editions of Orgasmo, So Sweet… So Perverse, A Quiet Place To Kill, and Knife Of Ice.
Italian writer/director Umberto Lenzi helmed popular peplums, created extreme poliziotteschi, and invented the Italian cannibal phenomenon. Hollywood actress Carroll Baker was the Golden Globe® winning/Academy Award® nominated star of Baby Doll, Giant and The Carpetbaggers. Together in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s, they made four landmark films that changed the erotic thriller and giallo genres forever.

Those scurrilous Italian ‘mondo’ films are difficult to see in original versions; this Something Weird double bill yields an American hybrid of one of the better (?) examples, given the classy touch of a narration by George Sanders. A second oversexed pseudo-docu is a homegrown mongrel with all the credibility of today’s Reality TV — it doesn’t even try to be legit. Once again, Severin comes through with a doubly guilty pleasure, for sex-starved carnival suckers everywhere.

The Pyjama Girl Case (1977) will be available on Blu-ray September 18th From Arrow Video
Throughout the late 1960s and into the 70s, the Italian giallo movement transported viewers to the far corners of the globe, from swinging San Francisco to the Soviet-occupied Prague. Only one, however, brought the genre s unique brand of bloody mayhem as far as Australia: director Flavio Mogherini (Delitto passionales) tragic and poetic The Pyjama Girl Case.
The body of a young woman is found on the beach, shot in the head, burned to hide her identity and dressed in distinctive yellow pyjamas. With the Sydney police stumped, former Inspector Timpson comes out of retirement to crack the case. Treading where the real detectives can t, Timpson doggedly pieces together the sad story of Dutch immigrant Glenda Blythe and the unhappy chain of events which led to her grisly demise.

During the early 60’s to the mid 80’s Italian horror was in its heyday – directors such as Mario Bava, Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, Antonio Margheriti, Umberto Lenzi, Joe D’Amato, and Enzo. G. Castellari directed some of the most outrageous terror films ever. Films that, at the time, pushed boundaries, depicting some of the most stylish and horrific on screen images. But at the same time these films included some of the most elegant and beautiful scores, scores which gained a cult following then and to this day – and they remain as popular now as they’ve ever been.

While Lucio Fulci made his reputation with a series of graphically violent horror movies like Zombie (Aka Zombi 2), City of the Living Dead (Aka The Gates of Hell), The House by the Cemetery, The Beyond, and The New York Ripper, his early career was a hodgepodge of film genres including comedies, spaghetti westerns, and poliziotteschi. However, many critics argue that his greatest films were his early gialli films like A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin and Don’t Torture a Duckling. Fulci was handicapped by terribly low budgets for most of his career but some of his earlier works were actually well-funded, allowing his cinematic craftsmanship to be on full display. Such was the case with Don’t Torture a Duckling.
As was the case with many gialli of the time period, the film titles were influenced by Argento’s first three gialli, collectively known as the “Animal Trilogy.

Guest Reviewer Lee Broughton is back, with another Italo Western double bill DVD review. Wild East’s ongoing Spaghetti Western Collection continues to grow and this double bill release is particularly welcome since it features two obscure and wholly idiosyncratic genre entries from 1969. Italian Western directors had found it relatively easy to appropriate key plot points and ideas from Sergio Leone’s Dollars films during the genre’s early years but when Leone’s sprawling, mega-budgeted, meta-Western Once Upon a Time in the West was released in 1968 it was clear that this was one genre entry that local filmmakers would not be able to easily emulate.
With scriptwriters and directors now essentially being forced to come up with their own ideas and generic trends, a new wave of Spaghetti Westerns were produced that effectively took the genre in a multitude of new directions. The two films featured here were part of that wave.

If I haven’t made it clear in previous articles or on social media, let me do so now: I’m a firm believer that Lucio Fulci is one of, if not the, greatest horror directors to ever live. While dismissed as a schlock artist by critics in his time, Fulci’s unique brand of horror, borne from a holy fusion of market-friendly gore and surrealist pure cinema, has aged remarkably well. But before he mingled among zombies or cracked open the gates of hell, Fulci directed a few violent giallo films, including the incredibly depressing Don’t Torture a Duckling, which recently received a new restoration and Blu-ray release from Arrow Video.
Don’t Torture a Duckling isn’t your usual giallo. While it has all of the signatures of the sub-genre—red herrings, black gloves, sexuality—the conventions and tropes are slightly skewed. Instead of taking place in...

Lucio Fulci’s most consistent trait might have been his instability. In fact it may have been the Italian director’s defining quality; lingering throughout his films is the inescapable notion that, no matter how stylish or finely-tuned his mise en scene, he will surely find a way to fly off the rails and take everyone with him. He’s the crazy ex-girlfriend of filmmakers.
Fulci made his rep in the late 70’s and early 80’s with a series of crassly exploitative horror films, high on gore and low on logic. Nevertheless he began his career on...

Charles Bronson plays a real-life Mafiosi in a period picture with a fine script, some good performances and a production so sloppy that the whole thing could be called The Anachronism Papers. Joseph Wiseman and Lino Ventura bring additional tough-guy star-power, and Bronson actually commits himself to the role — quite a change of pace for one of his later pictures.

This time they may have gotten it right! If a knife or a straight razor won’t do, how about killing a victim with 500-pound metal artwork studded with spikes? Dario Argento distilled a new kind of slick, visually fetishistic horror who-dunnit thriller subgenre with this shocker, aided by the dreamy cinematography of Vittorio Storaro.

Review by Roger Carpenter
In his heyday, director/producer Ovidio Assonitis was affectionately known as “The Rip-Off King” due to his blatant copying of popular, more expensive hit films. Thus, we have Beyond the Door (1974), an Exorcist-style film; Tentacles (1977), a killer octopus film in the vein of Jaws; and even the sequel Piranha II: The Spawning (1981), which he famously directed after firing James Cameron shortly after filming commenced. Always on the lookout for the next big idea in exploitation, it isn’t surprising that he would also jump on the slasher bandwagon as well. Madhouse is Assonitis’ entry into that particular subgenre of film.
Though produced in late 1980 or early 1981 in Savannah, Georgia, Madhouse wasn’t released stateside until 1983. So while the film bears more than a passing resemblance to the classic slasher Happy Birthday to Me (also made in 1981), it is unclear how much of a direct rip-off one film is of the other.

An unconventional tale of revenge, Alice Lowe's Prevenge is now available to stream on Shudder, and to celebrate the film's release and its haunting synth score, we caught up with Pablo Clements and James Griffith (of the band Toydrum) to discuss the creativity that went into scoring Lowe's multidimensional horror film.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us! How did you initially get involved with Alice Lowe’s Prevenge?
"We met Alice a few years back when we scored a short called Pieces, directed by our good friend Jack Weatherley, and Alice was part of the cast. A year later, Alice asked us to score her short film called Solitudo, and a year after that she came to us with Prevenge. We always got on really well and have a mutual respect for each other's work, so it was easy and enjoyable to work together.

Do you like my choice of leading image? 'We're the Glory Guys! Eee-Yow!' What is surely the most generic cavalry western of all time is actually from a screenplay by Sam Peckinpah. In the enduring, boundless shadow of Sergio Leone’s legacy, a deluge of neglected and forgotten Italian genre titles languish undeservedly, ready for rediscovery. Arrow Video has dusted off a masterful example long overdue, Tonino Valerii’s 1967 sophomore feature, Day of Anger (aka Gunlaw). Valerii worked as Leone’s assistant on A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More before launching his own directorial career, re-fashioning the villainous energy of Lee Van Cleef in the actor’s effort to break out on his own. Scripted by Italian genre regular Ernesto Gastaldi (who worked with many masters of giallo film, including Mario Bava, and Sergio Martino), the overtly familiar narrative does little to hamper the enjoyable performances of Van Cleef and Giuliano Gemma, replete with several memorable action sequences and set pieces that assist in elevating the title to its deserved reputation.

This Valentine’s Day, forget the flowers, the chocolates, the tiny candy hearts, and those pre-planned dinner reservations, because the folks at Mondo and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, TX, are offering a cannibalistic twist on the classic dinner and a movie date. To celebrate love and the first-ever release of a particularly memorable Riz Ortolani score on vinyl, Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse will host a Valentine’s Day feast of flesh-eater-inspired food accompanied by a film usually not associated with Cupid’s big day: Ruggero Deodato’s 1980 Italian horror classic, Cannibal Holocaust.

Details are scarce but both Death Waltz Records and One Way Static Records made a joint announcement this morning. Both companies are teaming up for a release of Riz Ortolani's Cannibal Holocaust score.
The notorious film, by Ruggero Deodato, recently returned to select theaters thanks to Grindhouse Releasing who, I'm sure, also has a hand in bringing the upcoming Cannibal Holocaust vinyl to life.

“Would you like people to make money off your misery?”
I can’t believe I’m getting the opportunity to see Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust on the big screen again for the third time in 10 years. I have a history with Cannibal Holocaust. It was made in 1980 but never played theatrically here in St. Louis. Notorious for its realistic and barbaric violence (and also for the on-screen killing of real animals) it was too rough for even Fangoria to cover and I only read about it in some of the fanzines that I subscribed to later in the decade. That’s where I first laid eyes on some mind-blowing images like the one of the woman impaled on a pole — through her vagina and out her mouth! (I’m still not sure how they faked that….if they faked that!).
Finally, in 1988 I attended my first Fangoria Weekend of Horrors.

“I wonder who the real cannibals are…”
There have been many releases of Cannibal Holocaust throughout the years, on various formats, but this release, from Grindhouse Releasing in the United States, is, from what I’ve seen, the best yet, and features 3 discs, here, I’ll be looking at what is on those discs, and reviewing the film.
Now, this isn’t an easy task. Cannibal Holocaust has been spoken about, reviewed and studied by a vast number of people in the last 34 years with great amounts of research done into the making of the film and the events that followed its release. While I might not go into as much detail as some, I will still do my best to give my thoughts on the film and this specific set. This will only be my second time with the film, and the first time I will have seen it in over ten years.

This is the release that we’ve been waiting for. Ever since Grindhouse Releasing started putting titles out in the Blu-ray format, there were two titles that they released on DVD that fans just knew would be coming to Blu-ray soon. Those titles would be Cannibal Holocaust, and Pieces. Cannibal Holocaust, probably being the more important release between the two. The day is finally here, and holy hell what a release this is. Even if you’re not a fan of the movie itself, this is such an impressive Blu-ray release that it deserves to be on your shelf regardless. Why can’t all releases be as nice as a Grindhouse Releasing release? For the type of film they release, everything from the content to the packaging is miles beyond almost all of their competitors. Cannibal Holocaust may be one of the most disturbing releases they’ve put to the Blu-ray format,...

This is a somewhat light week for Blu-ray releases, as far as quantity goes. In regards to quality, though, it is a pretty spectacular week. We have a Scream Factory release of a film once thought to be lost forever, and one of the most anticipated releases from Grindhouse since they started releasing Blu-ray. Also worth noting are releases of Afflicted by Sony, which is an eerily effective found-footage vampire film, and the complete first season of SyFy’s original show Helix. I realize that there are probably other titles hitting the shelves today, but this is both what I feel is worthy of your dollars, and the titles that I was sent to talk to you about. The summer releases are starting to heat up, and next week is pretty great as well.
The Final Terror (Scream Factory)
Any week that includes a Scream Factory release could be considered a good week.

Love it or hate it, and for whatever reason, Cannibal Holocaust carved its own spot in cult movie infamy, and it has such staying power that it is not going away. Once Grindhouse Releasing made their return, and started releasing films to Blu-ray, I wondered instantly if things like Pieces and Cannibal Holocaust would get the High-Def treatment, and it appears that I have my answer. Though Pieces hasn’t been announced for a Blu-ray yet, Cannibal Holocaust has, and now we have not only a final release date, but a list of the treasure trove of bonus content that comes along with it. Get your pre-orders in, kids. Now is the time.

It’s advertised as “the one that goes All The Way!” And for good reason. Ruggero Deodato’s controversial 1980 cult film Cannibal Holocaust is known for its stomach churning scenes of cannibalistic violence. In the film, a human feeding frenzy ensues when a South American cannibal tribe makes a group of documentary filmmakers their next meal.
Its disturbing realism is sure to be enhanced in its upcoming Blu-ray release via Grindhouse Releasing and fans of the cult flick should be excited now that a detailed list of special features and a release date for the Cannibal Holocaust Blu-ray have been announced.

Please feel free to listen to some of my favorite compositions from the late composer.
His Grammy winning and Oscar nominated song “More” from Mondo Cane.
..which lead Ruggero Deodato to hire him to compose the Cannibal Holocaust score. My first exposure to Riz Ortolani was through Cannibal Holocaust. His main theme was so beautiful that it really didn’t prepare you for the brutality that was about to unfold. His synth stings in the second video I included below echo the sharp and instinctual shocks that I experienced when viewing the violence contained in Deodato’s film while the melancholy strings would represent my afterthoughts on the haunting images and moralities that are put into question by the end of the film.

Yusuke Kozaki might not have been the guest of honor at the recent U.S. debut of the French-run Japan Expo (it was 'Evangelion' character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto), but the video game artist certainly got his fair share of attention. With last spring's "Fire Emblem: Awakening" still fresh in the gamers' 3Ds', Kozaki's character designing style has become all the more recognizable. We caught up with him at Japan Expo to talk about his background, his experiences as a character designer for games, and his music tastes.
MTV Multiplayer: We've seen your work on deviantART though we assume you were also formally trained, correct?

• Read more: Neil Brand on the secret art of the film soundtrack
Writing in the Guardian this week, Neil Brand, presenter of BBC4's Sound of Cinema, says: "Most memorable movie music announces itself, whether with the blast of trumpets that begins Star Wars or the low, febrile string notes that usher in Jaws; whether the electronic hammer blows of Blade Runner or the unexpectedly lyrical solo piano that opens the Coen brothers' True Grit. These are the pieces we remember, the stuff we can hum along to, so engrained in us that it seems to have existed for ever."

Cinema Retro has received the following press release:
Death Waltz Recording Company and Paint It Black are proud to present Fabio Frizzi live for his first ever UK show to be held at The Union Chapel on October 31st. The perfect setting will play host to Frizzi, accompanied by his 7-piece band and with an additional string section (the F2F Orchestra), for what promises to be a very special evening’s performance and master-class in soundtrack composition. Rather than performing individual tracks from his catalogue, Frizzi will be presenting his works in newly commissioned suites, which he is currently finishing back in Rome with the F2F Orchestra.

Sleazemeister Umberto Lenzi popularized the Italian cannibal film subgenre with The Man from the Deep River and made gore fans drool with Cannibal Ferox, but you won't get over-the-top violence and a truly seedy story when it comes to his 1972 giallo, Seven Blood-Stained Orchids. The director's early gialli were quite tame compared to his later movies. Lenzi lures us to Orchids with a killer opening, featuring the death of a naked prostitute and a stylish murder set piece, starring giallo babe Marina Malfatti. Frustratingly, Orchids starts to dwindle after that. Lenzi bookends his thriller with some of the mood and craftiness we've come to expect of the Italian-made movies, but a bloated middle drags to the finish. Newlyweds Mario (Antonio Sabato, father of soap opera star Antonio Sabato, Jr.) and Giulia (German actress Uschi Glas) find their honeymoon interrupted after a black-gloved psychopath attempts to murder the missus. The unlucky...

Composer J. Ralph admits to being awe-struck when Jeff Orlowski screened his documentary “Chasing Ice." “It was the most astounding, arresting, heartbreaking footage I’d ever seen. They had created the definitive proof of the robbery of the glaciers, and how it’s being completely destroyed at such an alarming rate. It’s the first ever visual proof of climate change.” Using time-lapse cameras, National Geographic’s James Balog captured this eye-opening look at the melting of our planet’s glaciers. So moved was Ralph by the film that he composed the score and wrote “Before My Time,” which is nominated for Best Song at the Oscars. (Take a look at the music video at the bottom of this post.) -Insertgroups:12- This marks only the third time that a song written for a documentary has contended for an Academy Award. In 1963, composers Riz Ortolani and Nino Oliviero and l.
