Reintroducing villains or anti-heroes from former movies hasn’t really been MCU’s style ever since it was kicked off with Iron Man back in 2008. Characters like Loki and Bucky Barnes have been an exception in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe as they have already redeemed themselves in multiple movies and series over the years.

However, as we witnessed in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel would bring back older characters if the studio feels like it.
Kevin Bacon opens up about making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut
Many stars have been a part of Marvel’s extended universe over the years, even if they were never a part of Marvel Cinematic Universe. From Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy to the X-Men movies, none of these were a part of the MCU as Marvel Studios did not have the rights for these characters until a few years ago.

In the final episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, Azula’s lightning strike takes down Aang, nearly killing him. Before Azula could finish her job, Iroh facilitated the Gaang’s escape, allowing Katara to treat his wounds using her Waterbending skills. However, the Fire Nation believed that the last Airbender was gone for good this time. In the first episode of Season 3, Azula gives credit to Zuko for taking down Aang when they met their father Fire Lord Ozai.
Azula, voiced by Grey DeLisle, in the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series
Avatar director Giancarlo Volpe revealed that it was Azula’s evil plan that motivated her to give Zuko the credit. Volpe shared that Azula was actually passing the blame as she knew about the possibility that Aang may reemerge after getting healed by Katara.

Paramount’s movie slate for the upcoming year included the earlier announced film from Avatar: The Last Airbender animated universe. With the working title of Aang: The Last Airbender, the film’s voice cast will be led by Dave Bautista and Eric Nam. Nam is set to play the titular role of Aang, meaning that Zach Tyler Eisen will not be returning to his iconic voice role. While it came as no surprise, fans are largely disappointed over the recasting of Aang in the new animated movie.

Avatar: The Last Airbender introduced a fictional world where benders can control one of the four classic elements: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. "Wicked" began its life as a playful, lore-rich 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, which imagined deep backstories and complex relationships between the characters from "The Wizard of Oz." By Maguire's imagining, the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West was merely misunderstood and marginalized. In 2003, lyricist Stephen Schwartz and dramatist Winnie Holzman adapted Maguire's novel into a Broadway musical that almost instantly became a runaway hit. "Wicked" won three Tonys, and had since set up camp on Broadway, becoming one of the longest-running shows in the history of the Great White Way. As of this writing, "Wicked" has surpassed "Cats" in number of performances.

Since Van Damme and Seagal hit big in the late 80s and early 90s, martial artists started to come out of the woodwork with their own unique brand. As we’ve covered recently on Reel Action, Van Damme collaborator Sheldon Lettich attempted to introduce audiences to both the style of Capoeira and the star power of Mark Dacascos in Only the Strong. Another martial artist that tried his hand at the action title and came away with a cult following was Jeff Speakman as he demonstrated his Kenpo skills in the 1991 film The Perfect Weapon.

After more than half a decade of development, Netflix unveiled its highly anticipated live- action Avatar: The Last Airbender on Friday.
The show, adapted from Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko’s animated series that premiered in 2005, follows the beloved story of Aang, an Avatar who can bend all four elements — water, earth, fire and air — and is responsible for maintaining harmony in his universe’s four nations. Along the way, Aang befriends waterbender Katara and her brother Sokka as they work together to end the fire nation’s war against the other nations. Frequently, the group faces off against Zuko, a fire nation prince locked in an ongoing pursuit of Aang’s demise.
Though Netflix’s live-action approach to the story heads for darker themes than Nickelodeon’s animated original, the cast of kids at the show’s center maintains the story’s sense of childlike wonder that is so beloved by fans.

While Zuko, one of the most beloved characters from the fantasy series Avatar: The Last Airbender, has been voiced by actor Dante Basco in the animated series, the character has been portrayed by American actor Dallas Liu in the live-action adaptation. Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” including the finale.
At the start of my Zoom interview with “Avatar: The Last Airbender” star Dallas Liu, I can’t help showing off a mug that pictures his character Zuko, voiced by Dante Basco in the original animated series. I expect a polite laugh or other acknowledgement of his cartoon namesake, but Liu surprises me:
“Lee from the tea shop!” he says without missing a beat.
Like “Avatar” showrunner Albert Kim, Liu knows Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko’s Nickelodeon series inside and out. “Lee from the tea shop” is a Season 2 reference — even this superfan had to think for a beat before remembering Zuko’s go-to fugitive alias — and just one example of how much care has gone into bringing the beloved series to life.

"Arcane" is one of the best animated shows of the past decade, a masterclass in adapting and reinterpreting a popular franchise for a different medium. Studio Fortiche delivered one of the most stunning pieces of animation in years with this show, which draws from the world of the hugely popular video game franchise "League of Legends."
The story follows a group of characters across the socioeconomic spectrum in the dual city of Piltover and Zaun. They are caught in the middle of a revolution when the discovery of a century is made — arcane technology, which is essentially magic. There are compelling characters and stories, exquisite worldbuilding, and gorgeous fight scenes to boot.

Before John Wick ushered in a new era of stuntmen turned directors, Expend4bles director Scott Waugh was one of the few exceptions to pull off the feat. Following in the footsteps of his older brother Ric Roman Waugh, the younger Waugh made his own luck by funding 2012’s Act of Valor and co-directing the action film alongside Mouse McCoy. The film starred active-duty Navy Seals, and its success then opened the door for Waugh to direct Need for Speed for Disney, as well as DreamWorks head Steven Spielberg.
Expend4bles is now Waugh’s fifth feature film, and he managed to cross off a major bucket-list item in working with Sylvester Stallone. The duo were supposed to join forces with Jackie Chan on Waugh’s other 2023 film, Hidden Strike, but the volatility of Hollywood schedules led to Stallone’s exit. There is an intricate balance when it comes to animated performances, with animators and voice actors working together to create memorable characters. Remove one of the two elements, and you get a completely different character. Look at Mark Hamill as Joker in "Batman: The Animated Series," Dante Basco as Zuko in "Avatar: The Last Airbender," or Robin Williams as Genie in "Aladdin": These characters work because of the team of animators infusing the characters with life, and because of the unique personality the actors bring to the roles (even if Williams' casting ended up causing a whole lot of problems).

She's also interested in using her quest as a way to find Ezra Bridger, a young Jedi who sacrificed himself to take Thrawn out of the Galactic Civil War in the first place. “Blindspotting” seemed to neatly tie the story of Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones) and Miles (Rafael Casal) by the end of the Starz comedy’s eventful Season 2 finale. But a surprise cameo in the episode’s final moments presented a nod to the show’s predecessor — and an exciting path forward.
The episode, titled “Return to Ithaca,” followed the aftermath of Miles’ surprise release from prison. He arrived back home near the end of the penultimate episode just as Trish (Jaylen Barron) confronted Ashley about kissing another man while Miles was in prison, which led them to a big rift in the couple’s relationship.
The finale followed as Ashley and Miles, along with the rest of their family, tried to figure out a way to move on after her betrayal and Miles’ surprise return. Though it took some time and difficult conversations, the couple was willing to put their troubles...

The latest episode of “Blindspotting” gave millennial fans something they never thought they’d get to see: Dante Basco essentially reprising the role of Rufio, leader of the Lost Boys in Steven Spielberg’s “Hook” — even if it was at a Halloween party.
The installment, titled “By Hook or by Crook,” followed as Jacque (April Absynth) invited her new beau Cuddie (Lance Holloway) to her family’s home in Daly City for a Halloween party. After being incorrectly advised by Trish (Jaylen Barron) into wearing a pirate costume to the event, Jacque freaks out upon arrival and reveals to Cuddie that her father is Dante Basco.
Given the actor’s history with pirates, Cuddie’s costume is understandably barred from the event. Though they try to hide it for a while, Basco eventually discovers the truth; leading to a “Hook”-esque sword fight between the men in Jacque’s life.

As kids and adults alike, millions of people dream of becoming movie stars. For some actors who make it, though, success on the big screen isn’t everything it’s built up to be. And while most still choose to stay, some stars leave Hollywood to pursue other careers. One such example is Charlie Korsmo, who played the son of Robin Williams’ character in Hook.
Korsmo’s face may be familiar to those who grew up in the 90s. The child star also appeared in movies like Dick Tracy. However, the actor’s career in Hollywood was short-lived, retiring from acting at a young age. Instead, Korsmo pursued a career in academia and is now a successful law professor.

"The Clone Wars" cartoon introduced the Togruta padawan who won the hearts of many fans. George Lucas created Ahsoka Tano to give the famed Anakin Skywalker an apprentice, thus kickstarting a game-changing piece of canon outside of his "Star Wars" feature trilogies. Originated and voiced by Ashley Eckstein, the Togruta entered "Star Wars" with a coming-of-age arc that endured across several "Star Wars" cartoons, texts, and now the live-action realm beginning with "The Mandalorian" (portrayed in the flesh by Rosario Dawson).
The upcoming live-action "Ahsoka" series, developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, seems both exciting and daunting for Star Wars fans, since it heralds the live-action iterations of the fan-favorite Spectres of the Ghost crew in the "Star Wars Rebels" cartoon. If you want to (re)familiarize yourself with Ahsoka and her allies, /Film has gathered the necessary textual and illustrated projects you should read before the new show premieres.

If you came of age in the aughts, you likely grew up watching a very specific set of cartoons -- ones that haven't yet gotten their big nostalgia moment alongside the "remember the '90s" crowd. After the "Kim Possible" era and before the "Phineas and Ferb" generation, shows like "Dave the Barbarian" and "American Dragon: Jake Long" briefly took over the Disney Channel with high-concept hi-jinks and lovable characters.
The latter series only lasted two seasons, but with talented voice and screen actor Dante Basco in the lead, a theme song covered by The Jonas Brothers, and a Chinese-American protagonist juggling everyday life with superpowers, "American Dragon: Jake Long" was impossible to forget. Over 15 years since the series drew to a close, /Film's Rafael Motamayor spoke with series creator Jeff Goode about bringing the story back to life. The "Avatar: The Last Airbender" franchise has been experiencing a surge in popularity in recent years, what with the announcement of two different new TV projects and a planned film trilogy, the bouncing of the original series between different streaming homes as a subscription draw, the creation of a Nickelodeon division focused specifically on "Avatar"-related content, and the "Avatar: Braving the Elements" rewatch podcast hosted by Zuko and Korra themselves, Dante Basco, and Janet Varney. Finally, after many years of insufficient cultural and critical attention paid to what's inarguably one of the best and most beloved fantasy TV franchises of all time, it appears that the industry, the press, and the world at large are catching up to the greatness of Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko's creation.
Even so, a lot of that renewed attention has been directed towards "The Last Airbender," with its sequel series, "The Legend of Korra,...

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is one of the best animated shows of all time. When I said this back in 2008, it may have been a statement that my middle school peers pretty much universally agreed on, but it wasn't exactly a mainstream notion among grown-up tastemakers. But in the years since the kids' show has gone off the air, praise for its mature and empathetic worldview, unique mythology, and delightful animation and voice cast has only continued to grow exponentially. By the time the series hit streaming in 2020, it felt like "Avatar: The Last Airbender" was becoming the phenomenon it was always meant to be, and it was no surprise when news of a whole host of new projects from Avatar Studios soon followed.

Who doesn't love a good team-up? From the Avengers and the Justice League to Dominic Torretto's family and the Expendables, action movies tend to feature some seriously badass collections of people that unite to take down the bad guys. We may even see them team up in some pretty major ways from time to time like in "The Suicide Squad" or "Spider-Man: No Way Home." But most recently, we've seen it happen in the latest season of "Cobra Kai."
Long after they were pitted against Daniel Larusso in the first two "Karate Kid" movies, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) have joined Daniel-san's fight against Terry Silver's new iteration of Cobra Kai in the fifth chapter of Netflix's sequel series to the beloved 1980s martial arts films. Even though "Easter Sunday" is the first mainstream Hollywood movie to prominently feature a Filipino family in a starring role, Filipinos have been around the entertainment industry in America for a long time. In addition to literally laying the foundation of Hollywood brick by brick alongside other immigrants, Filipino performers have been appearing in film, television, and theater for decades. People like Lea Salonga of "Aladdin" and "Mulan" fame and "Hook" star Dante Basco are among those Filipinos that have been grinding for years, but there are plenty more out there.

Who would have thought that Steven Spielberg would be a champion for Filipino Americans in Hollywood? In his 1991 film "Hook," the acclaimed filmmaker introduced the world to Rufio, Peter Pan's successor as the leader of the Lost Boys in Neverland. The character was played by Dante Basco and, for many in the audience, it was the very first time they were seeing a Filipino American performer in a leading role in a Hollywood production.

Nickelodeon is bringing back Middlemost Post and Are You Afraid of the Dark for second and third seasons, respectively. It also renewed the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast for a second go-around.
More From Nickelodeon’s Upfront
Middlemost Post is an animated show that launched in 2021 from John Trabbic III and follows three characters — Parker, Angus and Russell — who deliver mail to the denizens of Mount Middlemost. The second season will feature 13 episodes.
The third season of the horror anthology Are You Afraid of the Dark is dubbed Ghost Island and will follow new characters who think they are attending a “fun” vacation on a resort island. The new members include Kayla; Max; Leo; Summer; and Ferris. Julian Curtis (Wish Man) also stars as Stanley Crane, the hotel manager at the island resort.
Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Ghost Island has begun production in the Dominican Republic and will bow later this year on Nickelodeon. It’s from Ace Entertainment.
Season 2 of Avatar: Braving the Elements, which is the official companion podcast to Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, will feature 40 episodes. Hosts Janet Varney (the voice of Korra) and Dante Basco (the voice of Prince Zuko) will continue binging both series. Avatar: Braving the Elements is produced in partnership with iHeartRadio.
Nick revealed the pickups at its upfront presentation Thursday in New York City.

To many, Dante Basco is known as Rufio in Steven Spielberg’s “Hook.” Reality TV fans will remember him on “Hell’s Kitchen,” but over the years he has turned his hand to producing, directing and writing.
In “The Fabulous Filipino Brothers,” out now on-demand, he directs and stars, along with his brothers Derek Basco, Dionysio Basco, and Darion Basco, in the film structured as a series of vignettes following four brothers as their Filipino American family prepares for the ultimate Filipino event: a wedding.
As the narrative intercuts between the wedding celebration in Pittsburg, Calif., and the vignettes that focus individually on the four siblings during the buildup to the big event, Basco worked with fellow Filipino American cinematographer Andrea Walter to deliver his vision.
Says Walter, “Dante and I decided we wanted to give a different look for each brother. I also wanted a contrast between life here and life in the Philippines.

On more than one occasion during my tenure at /Film, I've emphasized the importance of diversity in media. This is nothing new. Actor "Dante Basco is making his directorial debut with The Fabulous Filipino Brothers, and he's not at it alone. With his family in real-life playing his family onscreen, the definition of 'family affair' is taken to the next level with the beautiful chaos that plays out throughout the film." From Nor-Cal to The Philippines, four brothers confront their issues with love, family, and culture, surrounding a highly controversial Filipino wedding. Told in four vignettes featuring cockfights, adultery, romance, food, & family. It stars Dante Basco with Darion Basco, Dionysio Basco, Arianna Basco, Solenn Heussaff, Liza Lapira, Tirso Cruz III, Joey Guilla, Aida Basco, Darius Basco, Aurora Basco, Cheryl Tsai, and Crystal Kwon. When The Legend of Korra first debuted on Nickelodeon in 2012 it was hotly anticipated. A sequel to the popular Avatar: The Last Airbender, fans had waited four years for the show and with that came expectations. How would Korra tie into Atla? Would any of the old characters show up? Could it live up to the high level of storytelling Atla maintained? Would they reveal what happened to Zuko’s mom?!
While the show instantly won over a large group of fans there were still some detractors who blasted the show for “controversial” choices in relation to those questions and more. Adult Aang, seen in flashbacks, was much more serious than his goofy younger self. Certain characters weren’t as instantly beloved as the previous cast. Toward the end of Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra season 1, long-time Avatar: The Last Airbender fans got a huge surprise. As season villain Amon overran Republic City, Korra put out a call for help. Who was there to answer but none other than Zuko’s grandson, General Iroh! Yes, original Atla character Zuko had a grandson and he was named after the beloved Iroh. Not only that, but General Iroh was voiced by Zuko’s voice actor, Dante Basco!
While this was a shock and delight, some noted that Basco’s voice for General Iroh was nearly identical to his performance as Zuko. Over the years fans have questioned why Basco didn’t give the character a different voice.

“The Donut King” (2020)
From filmmaker Alice Gu, “The Donut King” traces the twisty, unexpected journey of Cambodian refugee Ted Ngoy, who arrived in California in the 1970s and, through a mixture of diligence and luck, built a multi-milion dollar donut empire up and down the west coast.
After escaping the brutal Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, Ngoy started a new life in America as a church custodian and eventually parlayed hard luck and opportunity into the opening of his first donut shop in Orange County, California. His Christy’s Doughnuts became a rapidly expanding chain of success, and over the next decade, Ngoy also sponsored hundreds of visas for incoming Cambodian refugees and offered them steady employment in his donut shops.

When actor Dante Basco decided he wanted to direct a dramedy centered around an Asian/Pacific Islander family, he knew exactly who to call.
“I talked to Jon M. Chu, the director of ‘Crazy Rich Asians,'” Basco told TheWrap ahead of the SXSW premiere of his film, “The Fabulous Filpino Brothers.”
“When I first met Johnny, he was like, ‘You’re the first Asian face I saw. When you did Rufio [in “Hook”], that made me feel like I could be a part of Hollywood.’ So we’ve always had a great relationship,” Basco explained.
“I remember sitting in New York watching some of the pre-cut scenes from ‘In the Heights,'” Basco said, referring to Chu’s film based on the stage musical of the same name, which will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on June 11. “I was about to embark on my journey. He told...

The title for “The Fabulous Filipino Brothers” makes it sound like a movie about a now-obscure troupe of singing-dancing siblings who once opened for Frank Sinatra in Las Vegas, and were audience favorites back in the day on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” As it turns out, however, this engagingly freeform comedy has an entirely different sort of showbiz pedigree, being the joint effort of four real-life Filipino-American brothers — Dante, Derek, Dionysio and Darion Basco — with scads of film and TV acting, writing and producing credits on their respective IMDb pages. And while one can only wonder just how autobiographical this enterprise may be for any of them, there can be no doubt that their family ties are a major reason why the interactions of the characters they portray resound with a solid ring of truth that greatly enhances all the funny business.

Disclosure have shared their quirky new video for “Watch Your Step,” the Kelis-featuring single from the brotherly dance duo’s latest LP Energy.
Keeping true to its title, the visual — directed by Kid Studio, who previously helmed Disclosure’s similarly oddball “Energy” and “Birthday” videos — centers around an extremely large-footed kid and his attempts to woo an older teenager at a community hall’s dance.
In the video’s final moments, it’s revealed that the boy is somehow the son of Rufio — yes, Rufio from Hook — as evidenced by actor Dante Basco,...
