The Cannes audience gave a respectful embrace to David Cronenberg’s chilly drama The Shrouds, the latest from the Canadian king of horror.
Cronenberg joined castmembers Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, Sandrine Holt and Elizabeth Saunders to hit the Croisette for the film’s premiere Monday. Cronenberg rocked the red carpet wearing a pair of white rimmed wrap-around 1990s-style plastic sunglasses.
The film was met with applause that went on for three and a half minutes before Cronenberg put an end to it by taking the mic and thanking the crowd. The director explained that it was the first time he had seen the movie with an audience and added, “And it is completely different.”
Its reception was rather reserved, perhaps in keeping with the film’s subject matter of grief and death. The connection to the director’s own experience was made clear with Cassel’s character Karsh,...

David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds,” the horror auteur’s latest film about a widow who invents technology to see inside his late wife’s grave, received a 3.5-minute standing ovation at its Cannes premiere on Monday night.
The crowd showed their respect for the Cannes legend with applause after the credits rolled, but it was lackluster as audience members digested the film, which is a departure from Cronenberg’s usual out-of-the-box body horror. Instead, “The Shrouds” is a thoughtful exploration of grief and technology, and though there are several gross-out moments, the film relies on emotion more than anything.
“This is the first time I’ve seen the movie with an audience, and it’s completely different,” Cronenberg said after the clapping died down. “I’m very happy that you are all here.”
Described as an arthouse horror film, “The Shrouds” stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt.

Sophomore slump? Not for Saint Laurent Productions.
One year after a high-profile splash with its debut film project — Pedro Almodóvar’s gay cowboy Western Strange Way of Life — the luxury house’s production division returns to the Cannes Film Festival with three starry films in the main competition: Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez, David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds and Paolo Sorrentino’s Parthenope.
Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello is credited as a producer on the pics, and he and his team delivered cast wardrobes. Emilia Perez stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Édgar Ramírez in the story of a lawyer who receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss disappear by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of being.

Last year, a creative overhaul saw The Punisher's Dario Scardapane replace Matt Corman and Chris Ord as Daredevil: Born Again's showrunner. Now, all signs point to the Marvel Studios series delivering the take on the Man Without Fear we've been waiting to see in the MCU.
TV Line caught up with Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio at the Upfronts in New York yesterday and asked the former whether the retooling has brought Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk more in line with Netflix's Daredevil.
"Not exactly the same, but much closer," Cox teased. "And potentially much improved."
D'Onofrio added, "It’s hard to comment because I want to say so much about both the [Netflix] show and this show, and the change that happened, but in the end, the last few months of work we did was written beautifully and directed beautifully. Personally, I think it’s as intense as we’ve ever been.

Legendary filmmaker David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future released in 2022, eight years after Maps to The Stars. Thankfully, we're not going to have to wait nearly as long for the body horror maestro's next film, which is set to premiere during this year's Cannes Film Festival next week.
Titled The Shrouds, the movie stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Guy Pearce (Memento) and Sandrine Holt (Fear the Walking Dead).
The first teaser trailer is now online.
The footage doesn't give us very much to go on, basically just serving as an introduction to Vincent Cassel's Karsh, "an innovative businessman and grieving widower, builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art – though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time."

"It's obvious they were tracking you through her." An early first look teaser trailer has debuted for the next film from acclaimed genre filmmaker David Cronenberg titled The Shrouds. It's set to premiere later this week at the prestigious 2024 Cannes Film Festival in France, before arriving in theaters later in 2024. Variety explains the premise: "The Shrouds centers on Karsh, a prominent businessman. Inconsolable since the death of his wife, he invents GraveTech, a revolutionary and controversial technology that enables the living to monitor their dear departed in their shrouds. One night, multiple graves, including that of Karsh's wife, are desecrated. Karsh sets out to track down the perpetrators." It's inspired by the idea of reconnecting with the dead, but goes beyond that as Cronenberg explains his own "shrouds" are "cinematic devices" and describes this film as "cemetery cinema." Yeah, I'm in. Sounds like he's getting his fingers dirty digging around in graves.

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio have been locked in to reprise the roles of hero Matt Murdock / Daredevil and villain Wilson Fisk / Kingpin, characters they originally played on the Marvel-inspired Netflix series Daredevil, on the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again ever since Marvel and Disney+ started pushing the show forward. When their supporting cast was being assembled at the end of 2022, it was announced that Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo) had signed on to appear on the show as a love interest to the Fisk – with the word being that she was taking over the role of his wife Vanessa Marianna Fisk, who had previously been played by Ayelet Zurer on the Netflix show. Charlie Cox is set to reprise his role as Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio returns as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, and Jon Bernthal will once again portray Frank Castle, aka the Punisher. Other returning actors include Margarita Levieva as Heather Glenn, Michael Gandolfini as Daniel Blade, Genneya Walton as Bb Urich, Clark Johnson as Cherry, Arty Froushan as Buck Cashman, and Zabryna Guevara as Sheila Rivera. Deborah Ann Woll is also back as Karen Page, alongside Elden Henson reprising his role as Franklin “Foggy” Nelson.

Jon Bernthal Returns As The Punisher Alongside Charlie Cox In New ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Set Photos
We’re getting a first look at Jon Bernthal’s return as (a bloody) Frank Castle (aka Punisher) in new set photos of Daredevil: Born Again, the upcoming Marvel/Disney+ series, which is currently filming in New York City. In the new photos, we see Bernthal’s Punisher alongside Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock.
Bernthal first played the Frank Castle role on Netflix’s version of Daredevil, debuting the character during second season in 2016. He then went on to play the titular character for two seasons of Netflix’s The Punisher, which aired from 2017-19.
Daredevil: Born Again follows original star Cox as Matt Murdock, a blind attorney-turned-crimefighting superhero, and also features Vincent D’Onofrio reprising his role as mob boss Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin, along Bernthal’s Punisher.
Daredevil: Born Again also stars Michael Gandolfini, Sandrine Holt and Margarita Levieva.

With just ten days to go until the Cannes Film Festival lineup is unveiled, one title heavily tipped to premiere is David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds, starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, and Sandrine Holt. While U.S. distribution has yet to be confirmed, French distributor Pyramide Films has now unveiled a September 25, 2024 release date alongside news that it will be the director’s longest film yet.
Clocking in at 119 minutes, it’s just a hair longer than Dead Ringers and Naked Lunch, which both ran 115 minutes. The distributor also confirms returning collaborators cinematographer Douglas Koch and editor Christopher Donaldson, who shot and edited Crimes of the Future, respectively, and the Canadian director’s longtime composer Howard Shore.
Here’s a new synopsis as well: “Karsh, 50, is a renowned businessman. Inconsolable since the death of his wife, he invents a revolutionary and controversial system, GraveTech, which allows the living...

We can barely contain our excitement about the news that Disney+ is bringing back Daredevil in a bid to reignite the character for Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The glimpses of Matt Murdock that we got on Echo and Spiderman: No Way Home were great, but we have missed this tortured, hopeless do-gooder and his heart of gold.
At the risk of sounding like a superfan (guilty), this Marvel nerd has faithfully watched everything that has led up to this moment, hoping for an eventual Daredevil return.
Now that it's actually happening, there's a lot to cover -- let's dive in.
Where Will Daredevil: Born Again Pick Up?

In case it wasn't already clear by now, Marvel Studios is doubling down on its connections to the Marvel Netflix universe of streaming shows. Next up on the reunion tour for "Daredevil: Born Again"? The Devil of Hell's Kitchen imposter known as Bullseye, portrayed by Wilson Bethel in season 3 of "Daredevil." The news comes from ComicBook.com, which reports only that he'll make some sort of appearance in the retooled series -- but "it's unclear how extensive his role will be."
Fans will remember that the rather tortured character of Benjamin Poindexter played an integral role in the war against Matt Murdock and Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk in the Netflix series. Season 3 ultimately ended with Bullseye on the wrong end of a fight between the two foes, shattering his spine and left paralyzed. It's unclear exactly how or even if Marvel will incorporate all these prior events into their new series, but...

Seven months have gone by since we heard that The Shrouds, the latest thriller from legendary director David Cronenberg, had wrapped production. We still don’t know when this one is going to be released into the world, but the first images have been unveiled by the French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma – and thanks to TerenceYiBo on X, you can see those images at the bottom of this article!
Vincent Cassel (who worked with Cronenberg on Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method) takes on the role of Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. When Marvel Studios took back the rights to the characters that had previously appeared on the Defenders Netflix shows, hopes were high that we were entering a new age of Marvel entertainment on small screens, more closely connected to the MCU. And for a while, especially in the likes of WandaVision, Loki, She-Hulk and others, that seemed to be the case. But now one of the highest-profile projects, Daredevil: Born Again is on the verge of a big creative overhaul even as shooting had already been underway.
Born Again, which will see the full return of Charlie Cox as lawyer Matt Murdock, who moonlights as the titular superhero vigilante and Vincent D'Onofrio as the villainous Kingpin (after they both appeared in other MCU shows/movies), had been under the creative purview of writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman, with production kicking off in New York this past March before the strikes shut it down.

The Man Without Fear is set to make his return to the Marvel Universe with Daredevil: Born Again. Charlie Cox will be suiting back up (likely in the new yellow color scheme seen in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) as Hell’s Kitchen resident Matt Murdock. Cox will be joined by the former Netflix series cast Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher as well as include Sandrine Holt as Vanessa Fisk. There are also actors in undisclosed roles, including Margarita Levieva, Nikki M. James, Michael Gaston, Arty Froushan, and Clark Johnson.
One actor whose role in the upcoming Disney+ show used to be undisclosed is Michael Gandolfini. That is until Marvel lowkey revealed who he will be playing. According to Cbr.com, the pilot episode has been listed at the U.S. Copyright Office, and Gandolfini’s role is listed as Daniel Blade.

Steven DeKnight, showrunner on Netflix’s Marvel Daredevil series, calls the upcoming Disney+ series “an old Disney scam” that will keep the Netflix series creatives from getting what is due to them financially.
Written and executive produced by Covert Affairs‘ Matt Corman and Chris Ord, the new installment centers on Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, otherwise known as Matt Murdock, an attorney by day and crimefighter by night. Vince D’Onofrio reprises his role as mob boss Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin.
DeKnight served as the showrunner for the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil, which launched in 2015 and ran for three seasons.
DeKnight was responding to a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) by a grip named Thomas, who is part of the IATSE union that represents film, TV and stage crew workers.
Thomas wrote that the retitling of the series is “a f***ing scam”, designed to reset guild contract terms to Season 1 levels.
