Warning: contains spoilers for the Blue Lights series one finale.
When Blue Lights arrived in 2023, it felt like counter-programming to the news headlines. Real life was filled with reports of police corruption, brutality and deadly crimes committed under cover of the uniform, and here was this drama, offering an alternative.
Grace, Tommy and Annie were that alternative. New recruits to the Police Service of Northern Ireland, they weren’t in uniform to abuse power or take greasy backhanders, they were there to help, and they had the courage of their convictions.
That isn’t to say their courage and convictions weren’t sorely tested by the reality of the job. As they discovered, policing a community riven by historical conflict is tough enough without MI5 doing deals with local kingpins that keep the drugs and crime flowing. Not to mention anonymous death threats and the violent loss of beloved colleagues.

“Choices, choices…,” says the narrator, a young seamstress, in this strange and striking debut from Freddy Macdonald. A neo-noir in the early Coens tradition, Sew Torn also features a bold tri-part structure in which the heroine, Barbara (Eve Connolly) — like Lola before her in Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run — gets three standalone chances to pursue a different destiny after stumbling on the bloody aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong on a quiet country road.
It begins with image of a reel of red cotton, a briefcase and a dead body. This is Barbara, who wonders what we’ll make of her story. Macdonald’s film then loops back to explain who Barbara got here, a tale of chance and coincidence that reshuffles its characters in a way that always surprises,...

The Mediapro Studio will shoot from November Season 3 of “The Head,” its biggest international hit, filming in the Sahara Desert with John Lynch (“The Fall”) and Katharine O’Donnelly (“Mary Queen of Scots), attached once more to star.
Olivia Morris also returns to her role as Rachel Russo, the morally conscionable daughter of ambition-crazed biologist Arthur Wilde, played by Lynch.
“The Head” Season 1 took place at an Antarctic research station cut off in winter, Season 2 on a hulking freighter at mid-Pacific’s Point Nemo, the most distant place on earth from nearest land.
“The locations for this series have been a fundamental part of the show itself, always in an inaccessible place,” Laura Fernández Espeso, The Mediapro Studio CEO, told Variety before talking at a Mipcom Media Mastermind Keynote on Tuesday.

The Academy’s 90th Sci-Tech Awards Saturday at the Beverly Wilshire (hosted by Sir Patrick Stewart) was dominated by the integral animation and visual effects software that powers the industry’s CG characters, simulations, and compositing. Digital Domain, DreamWorks, Industrial Light & Magic, Pixar, and Rhythm & Hues were among the 10 standout honorees.
In addition, visual effects technologist Jonathan Erland received the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (an Oscar statuette) for his technological contributions. Erland worked at Ilm as a model builder for “Star Wars” in 1977 and later moved over to Apogee to work on “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.” He eventually became director of R&D for Apogee, where he received patents for a reverse blue-screen traveling matte process, the Blue-Max flux projector, and a method for making front projection screens.
Erland also played a key role in establishing a separate visual effects Academy branch in 1995. He received the Academy’s John A.

With a first scene as stylish as that from Kissing Candice, the words “music video chic” come to mind before you can even discover writer/director Aoife McArdle is a James Vincent McMorrow regular who also released a short in collaboration with U2’s 2014 release Songs of Innocence. Between the oppressive reds and aural manipulation (I thought the volume wasn’t working until the score finally kicks in to augment the titular kiss), you can’t help admiring the sensory craftsmanship onscreen despite having no contextual basis for anything occurring. What begins as a romantic interlude shared between Candice (Ann Skelly) and Jacob (Ryan Lincoln) soon shifts to the latter randomly and silently strolling down the street (through fire) until finally arriving at a bar where the former is inexplicably waiting.

"A powerful man does not become so without sin." Rlj Entertainment has unveiled a second trailer for the indie action thriller Pilgrimage, set in Ireland during the 13th century. The story follows a group of monks who must escort a sacred relic across the "Irish landscape fraught with peril". Starring Richard Armitage, Tom Holland, John Lynch, Stanley Weber, Lochlann O'Mearáin, Hugh O'Conor, Eric Godon, plus the badass Jon Bernthal as a character named "The Mute". We already posted the first official trailer for this earlier in the year, but I'm glad to see another one reminding us that this is finally coming out soon. They're obviously playing up Tom Holland from Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the entire cast looks great. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Brendan Muldowney's Pilgrimage, direct from YouTube: You can still watch the first official trailer for Pilgrimage here, to see even more footage from this film.

"You will see the safe delivery of our holiest relic to Rome. Go with God." Rlj Entertainment has debuted a trailer for an indie action thriller titled Pilgrimage, set in the religious times of 13th century Ireland. The film is about to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this month, hence the release of the trailer to build extra buzz. The story follows a group of monks who must escort a sacred relic across the "Irish landscape fraught with peril". There's plenty of gnarly violence in this. Starring Richard Armitage, Tom Holland, John Lynch, Stanley Weber, Lochlann O'Mearáin, Hugh O'Conor, Eric Godon, plus the badass Jon Bernthal as a character named "The Mute". This actually looks pretty cool, consider me interested. Here's the first official trailer for Brendan Muldowney's Pilgrimage, originally from Yahoo: A small band of Catholic monks keep to a solemn routine on a remote Irish coast.

Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film Detour at Horror Channel FrightFest Glasgow, Chris Smith tells us the importance of FrightFest, his love of ‘film Noir’ and his hatred of reality TV…
FrightFest has premiered all your genre movies Creep, Severance, Triangle, Black Death, except Get Santa obviously. Is this positioning an important part of the rollout process for you?
Firstly let me apologise for being away for so long and thank you for having me back. I wrote Get Santa because I’d just had a son and was feeling like I wanted to do something that he could watch in the next 15 years. I expected the film to take a year to come together but it ended up taking four years. My son was by that time old enough to come to the premiere with a few of his class mates.
Back to the question, Frightfest is extremely important,...

If any one of the ’90s Quentin Tarantino copycats remade “Sliding Doors,” this neo-noir would be the result, even down to the casting of John Lynch, who starred in the 1998 film. Filled with would-be-witty dialogue, “Detour” takes a Choose Your Own Adventure approach to its twist-filled narrative about a college student whose attempts for revenge go very wrong. Director Christopher Smith employs split screen to show what happens when his hero makes a decision and flips back in time when it wants to show the audience just how little they know.

"Don't regret the things you do, just the things you don't." Magnet Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for a gritty crime thriller titled Detour, a neo-noir from filmmaker Christopher Smith (of Creep, Triangle, Black Death). The fantastic young cast in this is lead by Tye Sheridan (seen in Mud, X-Men: Apocalypse), Emory Cohen (seen in Brooklyn, The Place Beyond the Pines) and Bel Powley (seen in The Diary of a Teenage Girl). The film involves Sheridan playing a young law student named Harper, who meets a grifter and his companion who get him into all kinds of trouble. Also featuring Stephen Moyer, John Lynch, Jared Abrahamson and Gbenga Akinnagbe. The most interesting aspect is the split-screen narrative, which seems like a unique twist but you'll have to see the film to find out how exactly it plays into the story. It’s been two years since audiences last saw Gillian Anderson as the driven and obsessive Stella Gibson, the detective superintendent who’s been after serial killer Paul Spector (played by Jamie Dornan) in BBC Two’s drama “The Fall.” A new teaser trailer for the third installment has just been released and shows Gibson being haunted by the murderer who was last shot at the end of Season 2.
“You’re under arrest, you’re going to prison,” we hear Anderson’s voice say as she’s seen swimming, recalling the words that she last spoke to Spector and what he told her.
“I live at a level of intensity unknown to you and others of your type,” we hear him say. “You will never know the almost God-like power that I feel when that last bit of breath leaves a body. That feeling of complete possession.”

A gleeful throwback to a genre that unfortunately jumped the shark years ago, Detour harkens back to the ’90s noir that ultimately met its death with one too many Quentin Tarantino knock-offs. Detour is not that. It’s instead a playful shape-shifter (using a split-screen device) that offers a slight element of misdirection to its wild, winding road of unexpected encounters, moral decisions, and a portrait of white-trash Americana. This is lurid film noir at its best.

It seems BBC Two and RTÉ One have quietly cancelled The Fall TV show. The Northern Ireland crime drama stars Gillian Anderson, Jamie Dornan, John Lynch and Archie Panjabi. The first series (season) of The Fall, premiered in May 2013.
A new Deadline report that The Fall is shooting its third and final season, makes a fourth season seem unlikely. Back in March 2015, Gillian Anderson said she thought The Fall could go four seasons.
When The Fall was renewed for a third season, a couple of weeks prior to her comments, the BBC's Kim Shillinglaw implied season three would end the show.

Last year's The Fall was a superbly taut thriller starring Gillian Anderson as Stella Gibson, a Metropolitan police detective with a penchant for cream silk blouses who was sent to Belfast to investigate the brutal murder of a young woman.
While Gibson theorised the woman was the latest victim of a serial killer, we got to meet the man himself – a good-looking husband and father named Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) who worked as a bereavement counsellor by day, then donned a hoodie by night so he could lurk about stalking his prey.
While 18 months have passed since the first series was broadcast – during which time Dornan has gone from 'who's he?' to 'Christian in the Fifty Shades Of Grey movie' – series two picks up just 10 days after the end of the first.

A new preview for BBC crime drama The Fall has been released.
The clip sees the killer, played by Jamie Dornan, approach his next victim.
Gillian Anderson's Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson addresses the task force faced with catching the killer, saying: "In order to do the terrible things that he does, the killer dehumanises his victims. Let's do the opposite. Lets keep them alive."
The Fall will return to BBC Two for its second series on Thursday, November 13.
Series two will focus on the continuing game of cat and mouse between Dornan and Anderson's characters.
The cast and crew of The Fall recently confirmed that it was always the intention to bring back the BBC original drama for a second run, after the first series was left on a cliffhanger.
Creator Allan Cubitt said: "These [sorts of] cases are complex and take an enormous amount of time to solve, so I...

Brother to Brother: O’Connor’s Rudimentary Look at Familial Ravages in WWII
His first film since that ill-advised 2001 remake of Sweet November, which sought to rekindle interest in possible on-screen chemistry between Charlize Theron and Keanu Reeves, Irish director Pat O’Connor revisits darker, historical themes with Private Peaceful, a WWII tale as told through the eyes of two brothers from Devon. It’s perhaps the most serious subject O’Connor has tackled since some of his more celebrated 80s titles, like the Ira romance thriller Cal (1984) which nabbed Helen Mirren one of her two Best Actress wins at Cannes. And yet, while it’s great to find O’Connor avoiding the type of soapy schmaltz he careened into during his last several features, his dip into the over explored WWII era never manages to register as emotionally, thematically, or narratively resonant.

In acclaimed BBC 2 drama, The Fall, Jamie Dornan proved that just because you’re incredibly good-looking, doesn’t mean you can’t absolutely terrify viewers. While the actor-model has since landed the much-coveted lead in saucy adaptation, Fifty Shades Of Grey, he’ll be back for The Fall‘s second season as serial killer Paul Spector.
Starring opposite Dornan is returning lead, Gillian Anderson, who will reprise her role Superintendant Stella Gibson. Their paths sorta crossed at the end of the first season, when Spector upped his game and began taunting the detective from a safe distance. He narrowly avoided being caught, in one of TV’s most talked about shows of last year.
Now, with this first glimpse at the second season, it seems Gibson’s dogged attempts to uncover his true identity are set to continue. This time around, Spector’s big-headed ego shows no signs of stopping as he targets Gibson personally.

Nick wades into another stack of DVD releases, including 80s action epic Remo: Unarmed And Dangerous, and lots more besides...
"Whatever happened to Fred Ward?" is a line surely on the tip of most people’s tongues. Apparently, the star of Tremors and The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult has mostly been doing TV work over the last few years, though you’ll almost certainly remember him as the charismatic star of 1985’s Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. No? Well, shame on you, because Remo, making a welcome Blu-Ray debut, leads this month’s action-packed, erm, action special.
If you weren’t one of the lucky few that grew up with the preposterous movie otherwise known as Remo: Unarmed And Dangerous punctuating their childhood, we’ll fill you in. Riding on the success of the Rambo films (essentially, the only tenuous link being the vaguely similar name), Bond director...

When Fox kicks off its NFL coverage on Sunday, Pam Oliver will not be in the prime role that she has held for almost two decades. The 53-year-old sports reporter has been replaced from her usual spot on the field by “Dancing With the Stars” co-host Erin Andrews, with Oliver being moved to the number two Fox team with Kevin Burkhardt and John Lynch. The official announcement sent ripples through the sports world when it was reported by Sports Illustrated in July, and now Oliver has broken her silence on the issue in a new interview with Essence magazine. A low budget, low concept British science fiction film should accept that it is what it is and have a little fun. Scintilla is exactly this, a cheap, dark project about a team of hired mercenaries who must break into a heavily guarded, out of use war camp to retrieve an unnamed object. Set in an ambiguous post war era which could be either the present or future, the band of misfits, lead by a weary ex soldier type (John Lynch) deceive the Eastern European dwellers of the camp into letting them in, before burrowing through a maze of thick underground tunnels.
It’s a dull, rehearsed story that takes itself too seriously; the cat and mouse games can be pre-empted way before they happen, and the characters are devoid of any dimension, serving only as fodder. Any vaguely interesting cast members are culled quickly and early on, leaving a...

British horror is not particularly good at hitting the middle ground – it normally finds itself at either extreme end of the quality spectrum: from painfully awful to groundbreakingly brilliant. Sitting comfortably at the low-end of this spectrum is sci-fi horror Scintilla.
Scintilla follows a group of mercenaries tasked with infiltrating a subterranean military research facility. However, there they uncover far more gruesome horrors than they were expecting.
Three ingredients which normally make a good sci-fi or horror film are tension, scares or disturbing imagery, and at the very least a self-aware humour. If one of these factors is missing, proceedings are usually redeemable thanks to either of the other two. I can’t count the...

Scintilla takes a well worn premise and adds nothing particularly new to it. Following a group of hard-bitten mercenaries as they escort an Important Scientist through war-torn Eastern Europe some time in the near future, it starts strong but sags in the middle and soon becomes a cliche ridden mess, let down by cardboard characters and endless expository dialogue. It sounds strange, but I was enjoying this film right up until I realised that I really wasn't enjoying it.

Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan have begun filming series two of The Fall.

As series two begins, Stella Gibson (Anderson) is on the hunt for fugitive Paul Spector (Dornan) with a personal link from the killer's past revealing new clues.
But the closer Gibson comes to capturing him, the more Spector trespasses into her private world, delighting in taunting and provoking her. As the net gradually tightens around him, Spector becomes psychologically ever more dangerous and destructive.
"I'm over the moon to be back in production with this team again and to step into the shoes of the elusive Stella for what promises to be an even darker second season," Anderson said.

"What is the role of women in this age of wonder?"
Feeling rather like a retort - albeit an unwitting one - to critics like myself who've questioned the negligble role afforded women on The Musketeers, 'A Rebellious Woman' sees our heroes encounter a new phenomenon: feminism.
Leading the charge is the rebellious woman of the episode's title. Actress Annabelle Wallis brought a gentle, almost ethereal quality to her role in BBC One's Peaky Blinders last year and impresses again here as spirited trailblazer Ninon De Larroque.
Ninon is seeking to educate the young women of Paris - even the lowliest servant girls - but her efforts have placed her in opposition not only to the city's stubborn menfolk but also the Cardinal, who is urged to crush the troublesome De Larroque to secure a position as the new Pope.
