When the Borg were first introduced on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (in the 1989 episode "Q Who"), they were terrifying. Clearly inspired by the works of H.R. Giger, the Borg sported tubes, servos, wires, and ineffable black machinery sprouting from their bodies. The Borg were made up of other species that had been kidnapped and assimilated into their collective, their minds wiped and replaced with a singular, terrifying machine consciousness. The Borg traversed space in outsized cube-shaped vessels, likewise crisscrossed with wires and ducts. They only had one goal: to grow. As Q (John de Lancie) described them, the Borg are the ultimate users. They look out at the universe and emotionlessly see nothing but raw materials to expand with.
The Borg returned periodically throughout "Next Generation," becoming one of the show's more impressive antagonists. The race of soulless machine people proved to be a great villain.

“So hungry was I to realize my own powers, I hardly even chewed.”
We’ve all grown up hearing the classic fairytale. A brother and sister are turned out of their home and sent by their wicked stepmother to survive in the deep, dark woods. The ingenious Hansel leaves a trail of pebbles and breadcrumbs to find the way home, but they eventually fall into the clutches of a sinister witch. While Gretel does get credit for pushing the old witch into the oven before she can roast and eat Hansel, most of the story’s heroism still falls on male shoulders. But what if Gretel was actually the one responsible for the sibling’s survival? What if it’s her courage and fortitude that saves the day while her brother is little more than a burden? Oz Perkins’s nightmarish film turns the classic fairy tale on its head...

This Dune article contains spoilers.
If the shocking ending of Dune: Part Two left you wanting more, you can actually watch Dune: Part Three right now. Kind of. Although Denis Villeneuve hasn’t fully committed to a movie adaptation of Dune Messiah, there is an often overlooked filmed version of this Dune sequel out there right now. This isn’t a bootleg or a fan film either, but The Sci-Fi Channel’s excellent Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune miniseries. This very real adaptation of Dune Messiah even stars several major Hollywood stars, including James McAvoy and Susan Sarandon, as well as Star Trek legend Alice “The Borg Queen” Krige.
If you’ve slept on this particular Dune sequel, now is possibly the best time to watch it. Here’s what to know about Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune, why it’s great, and how to watch it.

"It's your basic down-and-dirty horror movie. It has one purpose, which is to scare you, and entertain you, and give you that funhouse experience where you scream your head off and then you laugh because you feel kind of silly."
So said Stephen King about "Sleepwalkers," the first screenplay he wrote directly for the screen. This was not an adaptation of one of his works — this was something he penned specifically for the movies, and that was the selling point. We weren't just getting a new Stephen King movie — it was Stephen King's first original screenplay! The poster even boasts that this is "The first Stephen King story written expressly for the scream." And what was this original tale of terror about? Incestuous werecats, of course! We're talkin' deeply horny cat-monsters.

"Star Trek: Picard" shares more than a little DNA with "12 Monkeys." In its third season, the recently ended "Trek" sequel series was captained by showrunner Terry Matalas, who co-created the wild Syfy Channel adaptation of Terry Gilliam's also-wild film. Aside from a shared showrunner, "Star Trek: Picard" was home to several key cast and crew members who worked on both shows – and nearly featured one more.
In a Reddit Ama about the show's third season, user Drewski1138 pointed out several narrative choices in "Picard" that echoed "12 Monkeys," including references to a mysterious red realm, a new drug called "Splinter" (a reference to "12 Monkeys" time travel), and more. "Were there any '12 Monkeys' Easter eggs we might have missed ... Were there any that you were told you couldn't put in?" the user asked Matalas. The answer? The final two episodes of "Star Trek: Picard," called "Võx" and "The Last Generation" respectively, concluded the season's strangest mystery. The young Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) had revealed on several occasions that he possessed eerie and inexplicable psychic powers. Not only could he read people's minds, but he could project his consciousness into other people's bodies and take control of them remotely. He also was inexplicably a martial arts expert and was capable of killing bad guys in ways he didn't think he was capable of.
The final explanation for his powers was perhaps a little silly. It turns out his long-lost father was Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and he inherited a Borg gene from his father. Picard, it seems, received the Borg gene from when he had been assimilated decades prior. The inherited gene gave Jack superpowers and also psychically lured him into the clutches of the insidious Borg Queen,...

This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Picard."The bulk of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard" was devoted to the mystery of Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). At the beginning of the story, Jack was being hunted by a mysterious bounty hunter named Vadic (Amanda Plummer) who was willing to kill everyone on board the U.S.S. Titan-a in order to get him. While Jack was indeed a criminal, his crimes weren't entirely serious. Mostly, he and his mother merely smuggled medical supplies to planets overlooked by Federation doctrine. Why was Vadic so hellbent on apprehending him?
By the end of the season, it was revealed that Jack had inherited from Picard a curious brain condition that manifested as superhuman powers. He could read thoughts, and he could project his consciousness into the bodies of others.

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
In 1994, the finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation was titled “All Good Things…” and now that ellipsis has been completed, with the inevitable phrase “…must come to an end.” In the series finale of Picard one era of the franchise very clearly comes to an end, while sneakily setting up a very hypothetical next next generation, too. Although the future of Star Trek in the 25th century remains unclear, and the franchise is once again expanding in other directions, it seems that for now, the story of the 1990s era has come to a close.
But the end of an era doesn’t mean the end of excellent callbacks to this golden age of Star Trek shows. Here are the biggest easter eggs, references, and shout-outs in “The Last Generation.”

In the last episode of "Star Trek: Picard," called "The Last Generation," Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) has given himself over to the evil Borg Queen (voice of Alice Krige) who has assimilated him into the Borg collective. He is outfitted with a wicked, black robot costume and has a metal prosthesis is bolted to his face. His mind is more or less erased, and the Queen begins using his powerful psychic brain to control a massive fleet of distant starships by remote.
Rather than merely blow him up and stop the attack, the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" elect to fly the Enterprise-d into the heart of the Borg ship and rescue him. They hope to reason with the Borg Queen and appeal to Jack's seemingly erased humanity. Picard (Patrick Stewart), having once been assimilated before,...

[This story contains spoilers for Picard season three’s final episode.]
Star Trek Picard’s third season finale takes the Next Generation crew back to where it all began — though showrunner Terry Matalas was too busy capturing its key scenes to take in the wonder of being on the bridge of the Enterprise-d nearly 30 years after Tng went off the air.

The episode finds Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the rest of his The Next Generation crew taking their old ship, the Enterprise-d, deep into the heart of a massive Borg cube to save Picard’s Borg-ified son, Jack (Ed Speleers), from the vengeful clutches of the Borg Queen (voiced by Star Trek: First Contact’s Alice Krige) before she can use Jack (Aka “Vox”) to assimilate the galaxy. The final episode of "Star Trek: Picard" -- called "The Last Generation" -- begins in the middle of an action-movie-style crisis. Starfleet has been infiltrated by a Borg brain virus that had assimilated thousands of young people at the same time. Now compromised, hundreds of Federation vessels have their weapons trained on an enormous starbase, ready to kill everyone. Meanwhile, the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" have gathered on a reconstructed Enterprise-d and charge out to Jupiter where a secret Borg base is hiding. Only once they are able to explode the Borg base, very much the way one might a Death Star, can the brain virus be erased and the assault ended. Also, they would save Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), the son of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), and finally slay the evil Borg Queen (voice...

When the third season of "Star Trek: Picard" began, this old Trekkie declared it to be the best "Star Trek: The Next Generation" movie we never got. This was a bit of a dubious comparison, as the four extant "Next Generation" movies never quite reached the intellectual highs of the TV series on which they were based. "Star Trek: Generations" was weirdly preoccupied with "passing the torch" moments, bending over backward to get Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and James T. Kirk (William Shatner) on screen together. "First Contact" was an enjoyable enough action picture, but it dumbed down a lot of the show's more interesting notions about the Borg, and, in being a full-scale action picture, only served to highlight how ill-suited the NextGen cast was for such a genre.
"Insurrection" more or less repeated the premise of the episode "Who Watches the Watchers", but tried to stage it as...

The danger of filling Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Episode 9 with so many plot developments and reveals is it risks losing its narrative edge as audiences follow it from peak to peak, reveal to reveal, and tragedy to tragedy.
The tension crests multiple times in this one script. In a longer season, with more time to tease out each revelation, they could've easily devoted an hour to each plot point.
Jack's journey, the Frontier Day devastation, and the Enterprise-d's ultimate reunion with its crew each deserve our total emotional investment, but instead, we are overwhelmed with such dramatic excess that Shaw's death -- a painful loss in any other context -- is merely a footnote in the morass.
To be fair, Shaw's death at the hands of Borg drones and in the arms of Seven of Nine was foreshadowed by his very first scene.

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
As Picard season 3 heads toward its conclusion, Star Trek fans are simply not prepared for how hard these episodes go in the nostalgia department. More than any other science fiction franchise, Star Trek’s history is so rich and varied, that it’s always possible to do something new with old material. For this reason, Picard’s penultimate episode, “Vox,” is still pretty shocking, even if you predicted some of these twists.
The easter eggs and callbacks here are there for the fan service, of course. But these are also storytelling moments, payoffs that are decades in the making. Here are all the biggest and most and best references and easter eggs in “Vox,” the next-to-last episode of Picard ever.

This post contains spoilers for the ninth episode of "Star Trek: Picard" season 3.
The Borg Queen is back, baby. According to the "Star Trek" timeline, the all-assimilating villains have spent a suspiciously quiet decade off-screen, but it turns out they weren't gone; they were just evolving. The latest episode of "Star Trek: Picard" gave us the answer to Jack Crusher's (Ed Speleers) origin with a Deanna-delivered info-dump about the Borg's return. It turns out, the aliens didn't just turn Jack into a locator beacon thanks to some Borgy remnants in his genetics, but they also figured out how to assimilate people via transporter.
This explains a lot of what's been happening this season, from the faulty transporters to Jack's visions. The young man has also been hearing a voice in his head, and that turns out to be none other than the woman in charge herself, the Borg Queen.
The Borg Queen is back, baby. According to the "Star Trek" timeline, the all-assimilating villains have spent a suspiciously quiet decade off-screen, but it turns out they weren't gone; they were just evolving. This post contains spoilers for the ninth episode of "Star Trek: Picard," season 3.
In the latest episode of "Star Trek: Picard," called "Võx," one of the season's great mysteries has been revealed. Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) has been having strange visions for several episodes, seeing an antique red door appearing in his mind's eye. He also seems to have acquired eerie psychic powers as well as the capability to read thoughts and project his consciousness into other people's brains, effectively taking them over. These abilities made Jack of vital importance to Vadic (Amanda Plummer), a vicious Changeling bounty hunter hellbent on kidnapping him. Vadic also, audiences have learned, hijacked Jean-Luc Picard's dead body from a Federation black site.
The explanation for both Jack's psychic powers and Vadic's grave robbery is, it seems, rather dumb: when Picard was assimilated by the Borg years before, they left a mysterious genetic "mark" in his brain,...

If one is a user of social media ... well, first off, my apologies. But, if so, enterprising Trekkies may find that the hashtag "#StarTrekLegacy" has floated through the discourse. "Star Trek: Legacy" is already the name of a "Trek" tie-in 2006 PC game that allowed players to engage in elaborate starship tactics using vehicles from "Star Trek," "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and "Star Trek: Enterprise." The hashtag, however, has nothing to do with the game and is, instead, a plea to Paramount from many fans of "Star Trek: Picard" to launch a spin-off TV series.
For many Trekkies, this fan-proposed television show would ideally be set on board the U.S.S. Titan-a and would star Todd Stashwick as Captain Liam Shaw and Jeri Ryan as his first officer, Seven of Nine. "Picard" also introduced several...

In the episode of "The Ren & Stimpy Show" called "Space Madness", the feckless young space cadet Stimpy (Billy West) is charged with guarding a mysterious button called the History Eraser Button. No one knows what the History Eraser Button does, but Stimpy is immediately intrigued. He paces, looking at the button, sweating nervously. He wants to push the button. An announcer begins to dictate Stimpy's temptation. Will he push the beautiful, shiny button? The button that, even now, beckons him ever closer? Stimpy breaks down, wails that he cannot help himself, and pushes the button. History is erased and all the characters immediately cease to be. The end.
"Star Trek: Picard" has been pacing similarly around its own History Eraser Button for eight episodes. The "Picard" button, however, is a nostalgia button. A History Indulging Button, if you will. Showrunner Terry Matalas has been eyeballing his button for eight episodes,...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Picard" season 3.
When the Borg first appeared in "Q Who", an episode of the second season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," they instantly became a tantalizing and threatening antagonist throughout Trek's galaxy. At the end of the show's third season, the Borg returned and assimilated Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) into their collective in "The Best of Both Worlds", often hailed as one of the best episodes of the series. To that point, the Borg remained threatening, cold, unthinking, awesome villains.
In the 1996 feature film "Star Trek: First Contact," however, the Borg were ... altered. They became animal, malevolent, and sweaty. Additionally, they now had a queen (played by Alice Krige) who expressed emotions, and -- most frustratingly -- could be negotiated with. The idea of the Borg being fallible, emotional beings made them a lot less threatening. The non-threatening...

With the exception of J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert E. Howard is likely the most influential author in all of fantasy fiction, with his beloved Conan the Barbarian stories transporting avid readers to the thrilling days of high adventure. However, the character also has a surprising link to the horror genre due to Howard’s occasional use of Cosmic Horror elements, something that was at least partially influenced by his long-time friendship with H.P. Lovecraft. Luckily for horror fans, the man-eating beasts and indescribable Elder Gods of Conan weren’t the author’s only foray into spooky tales about steadfast heroes encountering supernatural terror.
Years before Conan first rode out of Cimmeria, Howard was already a well-known figure in the world of weird fiction because of his other popular creation, the demon-hunting puritan known as Solomon Kane. First published in 1928, the swashbuckling hero became incredibly popular with fans of horror and pulp adventures alike,...

Plot: With humans and fae folk divided and freedom on the line, each hero will face impossible dilemmas and soul-defining tests in the epic conclusion of Carnival Row.
Review: When Carnival Row premiered almost four years ago, I gave it a solid review based on the episodes I had seen. With quality production values and vivid mythology, I found the steampunk-inspired story to be intriguing. Most critics were not so kind, and, despite a quick second season renewal, the delays brought about by the pandemic also meant the sophomore season would be it’s last. While the final season of Carnival Row is two episodes longer than the first, the gap in between has allowed this season to broaden its scope and deliver a fairly epic conclusion to the story of the fictional country known as The Burgue and the war between humans and the supernatural beings that reside in the titular slum.

Actress Annie Wersching has died at the tragically young age of 45. She is survived by her husband Stephen Full and their three sons: Freddie, Archie, and Ozzie. Wersching was reportedly diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2020 but had kept her illness private. The news of her passing first broke via a GoFundMe posted in support of Wersching's family by her former "Runaways" co-star Ever Carradine. The news was then confirmed by outlets including Deadline and IGN.
Stephen Full released the following statement about his wife's life and her passing (via Deadline):

Mel McKeon and Laura Myones Ruf have been working side by side so long that it’s common they finish each other’s sentences. That comes in helpful, especially now, as the veteran talent managers have a lot to talk about.

When "Star Trek: Voyager" premiered on Monday, January 16, 1995, it didn't just mark the launch of the fourth live-action "Star Trek" series. Its broadcast also marked the launch of Upn, Paramount's stab at establishing a fifth American television network after CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox.
Picking "Voyager" for this important corporate duty was, to borrow a phrase, flawlessly logical. At the time, executives at Paramount saw the 1960s science fiction program and its spin-offs as so important to the studio that they reportedly referred to it as "the franchise." Indeed, with "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" in the midst of its third successful season in first-run syndication and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" having made the jump to the big screen with the box office success of "Star Trek Generations," the "Star Trek" franchise was at an all-time high.

For every successful Stephen King adaptation, there are usually a handful of lesser projects lurking in its shadow. From Dreamcatcher to Lawnmower Man, the King of Horror actually has quite a few box-office bombs under his belt, with some fans justifying this by claiming that adaptations miss out on crucial inner monologues and emotional subtext. However, there is one Stephen King project that suggests that there might be more to the middling reception of some of these movies than the adaptational process.
Naturally, I’m referring to Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers, the one and only time that Stephen King wrote a story specifically for the big screen. Back in the early 90s, King’s tales were already sizzling hot properties at movie studios, so Columbia Pictures immediately accepted King’s offer...

Our first mention of BFI's program In Dreams Are Monsters came back in August when we announced part of the program for another film festival in England. It is Grimmfest's turn as they prepare for Monsters and Movies, two days of screenings and conversations with some of contemporary horror's finest. Mick Garris, Reece Shearsmith, Neil Marshall, Corin Hardy, Alice Krige and more will be in attendance at the Odean Great Northern in Manchester, England. They will all present some of their favorite horror films, or in some cases, their own horror films, then host discussions about said films afterwards. The films they will be presenting include The Thing, An American Werewolf in London, The Descent and Sleepwalkers. Not too shabby. Links to...

“Return to Silent Hill,” a horror film based on the classic Konami survival/horror video game series, is in development. The news was announced at the end of a livestream dedicated to announcing new titles in the franchise.
Christophe Gans, who directed 2006’s “Silent Hill,” based on the first game in the series, was confirmed to direct the film. He appeared in a video message during the livestream to discuss the project. In addition, Victor Hadida, who executive produced the 2006 film, will produce “Return.” Gans confirmed that the movie would adapt the second game in the franchise, which was announced to receive an upcoming remake for the Playstation 5 during the same livestream.
“The film tells a story of a young guy coming back to Silent Hill, where he has known a great love,” Gans said during the livestream. “And what he is going to find is a pure nightmare.”

Since the dawn of genre cinema, horror movies have been thrilling audiences with gruesome death scenes at the hands of monsters and madmen. Over time, filmmakers even came up with the Slasher subgenre to thrill bloodthirsty audiences with a specific hunger for over-the-top simulated murder.
Of course, some of these cinematic deaths were bound to be stranger than others, with killers often utilizing unexpected tools to get the gruesome job done. With that in mind, we recently published an article spotlighting six unusual weapons in horror movies, hoping to celebrate the creativity behind some of these iconic death scenes. However, with so many homicidal movies to choose from, we could never stop with a single list. That’s why we’re back with six more of the most unusual weapons in horror movies, this time featuring a couple of suggestions from readers like yourself!

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" exists in its own humble, chaotic space in the "Star Trek" canon. As a zany adult animated series, its tone is far different from the rest of the franchise. One would think this would be a detriment to how the show would be perceived, and yes, there are some detractors — but "Lower Decks" has its loyal fans, not just within the fandom but also notably within the legacy cast of the franchise.
Despite its main cast being a wacky group of underdogs, "Lower Decks" has seen an impressive amount of cameos from "Star Trek" alumni, including notable fan favorites like J.G. Hertzler as General Martok, James Cromwell as Zefram Cochrane, and Alice Krige as the Borg Queen. But one of the first and most substantial cameos came in the return of "The Next Generation" alumni Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi and Jonathan Frakes as William Riker...

It was announced today that acclaimed horror author Peter Straub passed away, an undeniable creative force who completely changed what was possible in the landscape of dark fantasy and horror fiction. Straub wrote with such beautiful world-building detail and rich prose that he often elevated the simplest concepts into full-fledged epics, which is precisely why the Master of Horror himself, Stephen King, collaborated with him on their collaborative masterpiece, "The Talisman."
While King has been the most adapted author of the modern era, Straub has only had two novels brought to life. In 1977, "The Haunting of Julia" was released inspired by his novel "Julia," but the film that should have had studios vying to gain the rights to any and all of Straub's works came in 1981 when Universal adapted his haunting novel "Ghost Story."
Straub published the novel in 1979, which became a national bestseller and helped cement Straub as one of the horror fiction greats.
