It’s good to be Paul Giamatti. With seven years of Showtime’s Billions under his belt, and a fresh Oscar nomination for The Holdovers in his rearview mirror, the legendary character actor can seemingly have his pick of any role he wants on the big or small screen. According to a scoop by notorious Hollywood tipster Daniel Richtman, he may have just chosen the most unlikely follow-up of all time: a TV version of Eli Roth’s Hostel from the controversial horror auteur himself.
While this might sound outrageous to some, Giamatti has been very open about his love of the genre, noting that he wants to add more horror to his filmography. He’s always carved out time in his schedule to be in genre stuff like the series 30 Coins, the movies Morgan, John Dies at the End, Gunpowder Milkshake, Shoot ’em Up, and more. He also...

Despite the mysticism of voice-over acting and the mysterious voices behind the animated parts, there remains a strong attraction to the medium of animation for actors who strive for real creative potential beyond the allure of recognition and glamor. Kevin Conroy stands out, among the millions of other faceless heroes, as one of the most respected and famous voice actors whose contribution to the DC comics lore has made him synonymous with Batman.

When it was first announced that the Planet of the Apes franchise was going to get the reboot treatment back in the now-Jurassic era of 2011, you could feel a familiar cynicism kick in: Great, another recognizable intellectual property getting trotted out for a quick cash grab, just in time for a corporate quarterly report. We’d finally washed the ashy taste of that ill-advised Tim Burton remake from 2001 out of mouths, and now Warners was going back to the ’70s pop culture well, ready to ransack musty nostalgia from chimpan-a to chimpan-z.

After 2017’s masterful War of the Planet of the Apes, which completed the trilogy that started with 2011’s Rise and 2014’s Dawn and told the epic story of wise leader Caesar and the apes who created this whole new world, I really thought there was nowhere else to go with this franchise that had itself started so brilliantly in 1968 with the original starring Charlton Heston as an astronaut who lands in this futuristic world dominated by intelligent apes. Many other iterations would come, even a side foray by Tim Burton, but it was that most recent trilogy that really popped. But being box office successes, 20th Century’s new owner Disney knew there was more to be mined, and they were right.

The first Planet of the Apes movie under the Disney regime after absorbing Fox hits theaters this weekend with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes poised to do $50M+ domestic, and $130M WW.
After the dull opening of Universal’s Fall Guy, Jesus, God, Saint Mary and Joseph, let’s hope those projections stay steady. Apes plans to pull in the under 35 guy demo in a way that Fall Guy did not. Presales stateside of around $3.1M, in line with what was the 3-day of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning ($54.6M), indicate a $50M-plus debut. That start in U.S./Canada isn’t far from the $56.2M opening of Matt Reeves’ 2017 movie, War of the Planet of the Apes, and that would be considered solid. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ has the advantage that it’s opening at a time with less competition than War of the Planet of the Apes.

It was not the summer box office start that many (myself included) were hoping for. Universal's "The Fall Guy" debuted with just $27.7 million domestically despite earning very good reviews, making for the worst start to the summer movie season in decades. But hope emerged in the form of one of cinema's most cherished franchises as "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" returned to theaters in honor of its 25th anniversary. An old hope, if you will. This once-maligned prequel to George Lucas' beloved sci-fi series helped make up the difference and made its way into the history books. Again.
"The Phantom Menace" re-release brought in $8.7 million domestically over the weekend, which was good enough to land at number two on the charts behind "Fall Guy" and ahead of the previous week's champion "Challengers" ($7.5 million). Internationally, "Episode I" added an additional $6.4 million for a global re-opening of $15.1 million. That's quite a...

After the runaway success of Netflix and Tim Burton’s Addams Family stand-alone series Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega, the streamer renewed it for second season in January 2023. That decision came less than three months after the eight-episode Season 1 premiered, eventually becoming the most-watched original series ever on the streamer ever with more than 252 million views to date, far surpassing Stranger Things‘ Season 4, Dahmer and Season 1 of Bridgerton on the all-time list.
Season 1 ending up scoring 12 Emmy nominations, including for Ortega in Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, becoming just the third Latina to ever be nominated in a leading actress category. The series won four Emmys, though Ortega lost out to Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson on Emmy night.

Cue "Goo Goo Muck" by The Cramps -- because it's time for "Wednesday" fans to get their groove back on. The second season of Netflix's immensely popular "Addams Family" spinoff series is now officially in production in Ireland after being postponed due to last year's extremely necessary dual actors and writers' strikes. Jenna Ortega will once again lead the way as the titular character, who is still her usual unsmiling and morbid self here. Well, except that, in a twist that left a lot of longtime "Addams Family" enthusiasts confused, season 1 transformed Wednesday into a cross between a Veronica Mars-style teen sleuth and a superhero, complete with heretofore unknown psychic powers.
While our own review wasn't keen on season 1, "Wednesday" broke out in a major way with the youths, not least of all thanks to characters like Wednesday's bubbly werewolf roommate -- and, should all the "Wenclair" shippers get their way,...

After Wednesday comes Thursday unless you are a runaway streaming sensation, in which case “Wednesday” Season 2 has just kicked off.
The show, based on the legendary Chas. Addams characters and run for Netflix by Al Gough and Mike Millar-run show (with a creative assist from producer and director Tim Burton), is now shooting in Ireland and there have been some changes in the cast.
New to the Jenna Ortega-led ensemble are the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning Steve Buscemi (now given second billing on the show), Olivier-winning British actress Billie Piper, Evie Templeton, Owen Painter, and Australian Noah Taylor. It’s unknown who the new characters are other than their names; Buscemi’s “Barry Dort” does not appear in previous “Addams Family” lore, so it’s anyone’s guess.
As guest stars, the TikTok-primed series now boasts 85-year-old legend Christopher Lloyd, “Absolutely Fabulous” co-star Joanna Lumley, Emmy and BAFTA-winning Thandiwe Newton,...

Ever since Charlton Heston climbed out of a little rocket ship in the toxic waters of the Forbidden Zone, science fiction has never been the same. The film in which he starred was based on a Pierre Boulle novel, but by the time it reached the big screen, it felt like an epic cinematic version of The Twilight Zone (and it had the Rod Serling writing credit to prove it).
The ending of the film is still one of the all-time great “twists” in cinema history, birthing the first modern science fiction franchise. And it’s never let up since. The Complete ‘Planet of the Apes’ Guide To Help You Watch The Films Before ‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Release (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Tim Burton’s attempt at rebooting the renowned sci-fi “Planet of the Apes” film franchise that took the world by storm in the early and late 70’s was unsuccessful. However, the complete reboot of the series in 2011 did what Burton was unable to do. The franchise was back in action and was stronger than ever with a better budget, action, and graphics (CGI was preferred this time instead of costumes).
The original “Planet of the Apes” was a pentalogy based on a French novel called “La Planète des singes.” It spanned over 6 years, with a continuously decreasing budget for each film — the franchise gained massive traction despite that.

Sure, while actors can play any kind of role, the training necessary to play these characters is also a crucial aspect of the process, often reaching previously unheard-of levels. That being said, when Michael Keaton played Riggan Thomson in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Birdman (2014), he took on a new challenge in his already lucrative acting career.
Given that Keaton had starred in a superhero flick, Batman Returns, that came out in 1992, Birdman was undoubtedly an interesting one. It was shot by Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki to give the impression that it is a single, uninterrupted 119-minute shot. In order to pull it off, the filmmakers combined roughly ten different takes with ingenious special effects.

The filming process was, of course, exhausting and exhilarating, pushing Keaton to his limits both physically and mentally.

Following the cult ’70’s film series Planet of the Apes and Tim Burton’s 2001 remake, the franchise was rebooted in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes directed by Rupert Wyatt. This was succeeded by two more sequels which were helmed by The Batman director Matt Reeves in 2014 and 2017 respectively.

The 4th installment in the reboot series titled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes directed by Wes Ball will continue to develop on the intense human-ape war. While the film is already expected to push the technical boundaries to rival Avatar 2, one important aspect of the saga that was introduced in Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes could take centerstage in this film.

I think of director Barry Sonnenfeld's "The Addams Family" and "Addams Family Values" the same way I think of director Tim Burton's "Batman" and "Batman Returns." In each case, the first movie operates as more of a test run for what the filmmakers can do with the property they're adapting, whereas the sequels allow them to really let their darkly off-kilter creative sensibilities run wild.
To be sure, 1993's "Addams Family Values" is the zanier of Sonnenfeld's takes on the "Addams Family" franchise, which originated with Charles Addams' original comic panels for The New Yorker dating back to the '30s. While its predecessor has a fairly basic plot, "Values" pits the eponymous clan against a dastardly black widow -- played to camp perfection by Joan Cusack -- who's out to marry and then murder wealthy Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd). It's also the film that fully embraces the...

With the release of The Fall Guy this weekend, the summer movie season is finally upon us. While it’s a thinner summer than usual due to the dual writer and actors strike bringing movies to a standstill for much of 2023, there should still be a lot of stuff worth checking out, even if the summer seems short of anything that can aspire to Barbenheimer levels of success. Yesterday, we teased some of our most anticipated horror movies, so now we’re tackling the rest of the blockbusters in our 2024 summer movie preview!
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 10)
In my opinion, there’s never been a bad Planet of the Apes movie. Going all the way back to the classic 1968 original and its four sequels, through Tim Burton’s remake and the Caesar trilogy from Fox, all of the movies have at least been interesting. With Disney now owning 20th Century Studios,...

"They blew up Congress! Haha!" Do you remember this one? Or do you remember not going to see this one? Back in '96, one of the hotly anticipated movies of the year was Tim Burton's wacky sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks! He'd just directed Ed Wood before and everyone was waiting to see him take that zaniness and make his own alien comedy, opening in December before the holidays. But perhaps he went a bit too zany? Because this one bombed and most people hated it. The film is a parody of other sci-fi B movies. Earth is invaded by Martians with unbeatable ghastly weapons and a cruel sense of humor. Produced & directed by Tim Burton, but not written by him. Starring Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, and Danny DeVito, among others. The filmmakers hired Ilm to create the...

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is releasing to theaters and we’re celebrating with a giveaway!
In 1968 Charlton Heston battled a race of evolved in apes in the very first entry to one of the greatest science fiction series of all time. The iconic imagery of the half-buried Statue of Liberty in the films climactic ending remains of the greatest moments in cinema history. There were five films in that original series, before the franchise was rebooted by Tim Burton in 2001. That film — with an ending that’s memorable for all the wrong reasons — killed all hope of reviving the once beloved franchise. Then, in 2011 we got Rise of the Planet of the Apes, launching a near-perfect trilogy of apes films for a new audience.
Rupert Wyatt directed the first entry in that trilogy; however, it’s Matt Reeves’, director of The Batman, who took over for the second and third entry.

Lydia Deetz, her stepmother Delia and her daughter Astrid stand over a casket, the burial services in progress. We can barely make out who the funeral is for but there he is on the headstone: Charles Deetz. While Charles was once part of the Beetlejuice sequel when the ghost with the most was to “go Hawaiian”, he was written entirely out of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice…for reasons that will soon be obvious.
Despite the original’s and sequel’s dalliances with the afterlife, Jeffrey Jones will not be in Beetlejuice – or pretty much any other legitimate movie – following his disgraceful tumble from his small but reliable spotlight. Perfectly fitting into prestigious period pieces and goofball funny flicks. Jones is a Golden Globe nominee with consistent work – a mix of villain, comedic and at times patriarchal roles, Jeffrey Jones went from Ferris Bueller baddie to Who’s Your Caddy?

Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes introduced us not just to the ape protagonist, Caesar, but also to his human co-protagonist Dr. Will Rodman, played by James Franco. The first film in the successful Planet of the Apes trilogy centered around how Will adopted Caesar who gets increased intelligence from the Alz-112 drug. Will survives the tragic events of the film, but it initially had planned a different climax for Franco’s character.

In the theatrical climax, Will finds Caesar and begs him to come home, but the latter prefers to stay with his new community of intelligent apes in the forest. Will’s fate is left to the viewer’s imagination as the deadly Alz-113 begins to spread among humans in the end.

With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hitting theaters soon, I figured now would be as good a time as any to revisit the recent Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and journey through Caesar’s story all over again before exploring Kingdom‘s take on the future of the world he created. The modern Planet of the Apes film are something of a pleasantly surprising enigma in popular culture.
In an age where many reboots either adhere so closely to the source material as to feel like a redundant carbon copy or stray so far as to be completely unrecognizable, the Apes trilogy manages to find that balance of maintaining the spirit of the original films while carving out an identity and a story all its own. But just how did they accomplish such a feat? Let’s find out.

The summer movie season is here. After a frankly terrible start to the box office in 2024, all eyes are now on everything from "The Fall Guy" to "Deadpool & Wolverine" to give movie theaters a reason to celebrate. As far as May goes, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" looks to get things moving in the right direction, being the first entry in the franchise in seven years. We've got a new filmmaker, a new cast, a new timeline, and a new reason to believe that this classic sci-fi property will once again find life more than 55 years after the original film debuted in 1968.
Current tracking suggests that "Kingdom" will open between $54 and $61 million domestically, per Deadline. Assuming that holds, it would be a damn fine start for the film. While the budget has yet to be revealed, it is said to be in the $120 million range. Disney and...

Who would have thought something from 1968 would still be this popular? Planet of the Apes achieved something none of the franchises ever could. Over the years, it has demonstrated to Hollywood the art of the perfect reboot. Despite its initial revival being met with disappointment in 2001, what followed was nothing short of spectacular.

The year 1989 saw Tim Burton joining the world of DC Comics with his movie Batman. Michael Keaton starred as the brooding vigilante opposite Jack Nicholson’s Joker. The movie also spawned a sequel titled Batman Returns in the year 1992.
Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman
The idea for the movie first came from the mind of Michael E. Ulsan, who purchased the film rights of Batman from DC Comics in 1979 along with his producing partner, Benjamin Melniker. He wanted to bring back the dark and serious Batman instead of the campy 1960 version from the Adam West-led television series. But it took him a long time to find a home for the Dark Knight before Tim Burton and Michael Keaton could give the audience a Batman like that of the 1989 movie.

Filmmaker Tim Burton is known for his gothic aesthetics and choosing to tell stories of weird characters. The filmmaker has put his stamp on blockbusters such as Batman as well as more personal stories such as Big Fish. He will be returning to one of his most beloved franchises with the Michael Keaton starrer Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
One movie in his filmography that stands out from the rest is his 2001 revival of Planet of the Apes. The project served as a remake of the 1968 classic sci-fi film, and starred Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter, and more. The film was not received well upon release and is often considered to be a subpar remake of the original. Actor Paul Giamatti, who played Limbo, spoke about his experience while shooting the film.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

The domestic box office at $2 billion currently this year is dragging 21% behind the same January-April spread last year, and when Universal’s Fall Guy commences the hot moviegoing season this Friday with a hopeful $35M, expect summer to drag some more.
That’s because the lack of product due to the actors’ strike has made a backloaded May through Labor Day frame in what will be lucky —lucky— to hit $3 billion. That’s a $1 billion less than last summer’s $4.09 billion per Comscore and -27% off. More bad news about summer: It’s not going to catch up the year any more against 2023.
Essentially, expect less and hope for more. Remember, no one saw Barbenheimer and Sound of Freedom coming last summer and that trio collectively minted $1.15 billion. If anything, summer 2024 is more about getting moviegoers back into the habit of moviegoing than breaking any records.

It’s not just the bad guys who have to watch their backs anymore. In the chilling wake of the new film Abigail, where a seemingly straightforward kidnapping spirals into a vampire-fueled frenzy, we’ve been inspired to delve into the murky depths of horror movies where it’s evil squaring off against evil. These 12 films twist the usual fright formula by pitting traditional villains—think thieves, rogue agents, and hardened criminals—against adversaries that are unexpectedly more sinister and supernatural. So, buckle up as we unleash a list that explores the darkest corners of human (and non-human) nature, where everyone’s morality is grey and the bad guys get way more than they bargained for…

Foxy Brown may be the meanest chick in town and Coffy the baddest one-chick hit squad that ever hit it, but Pam Grier is one of the most down-to-earth actresses on the planet. Comparing both John Carpenter and Quentin Tarantino, Pam Grier said, “Quentin is more reality, John is fantasy. Because he got me to play Hershe Las Palmas, where I was a female actor playing a man who becomes a woman,” referring to her character in Escape from L.A.,...
