Dragonball Evolution (2009)
Might just be the worst live-action adaptation...
For the longest time I thought "The Last
Airbender" was the most insulting live action adaptation.
They weirdly have a lot in common. But somehow the level of competency has plummeted even deeper! This is one of the worst looking films I've seen from a visual perspective. And the acting is an even further departure from the iconic anime characters they're portraying.
This movie makes "The Last Airbender" and "Death Note" (2017) watchable, that pretty much says it all!
Sauce (2017)
Ya done good Ralph!
"B*tch you da sauce!" Hahaha
No, this was actually pretty good for a YouTube short film. Well shot, extremely funny, and Ralph's roots to Italian culture really shine here.
The sound design/effects are pretty good in the restaurant. Although in the beginning there's a shot with the three men talking across the street and the ADR was very noticeable. It sounded as if you were right next to them, but the shot was across the street from them. But these are common mistakes for beginners shorts and I've made far worse mistakes in my shorts.
Overall I really liked it, but I don't really know how to rate it so I won't. Would recommend tho!
The Wretched (2019)
Worth checking out for the incredible atmosphere, but the script is so bad
In fact everything about the films presentation was spot on. The score, cinematography, direction, and practical effects are everything that I want from a horror film. There are good themes of family as well. The Pierce Brothers were definitely going for a old school approach on horror, and I miss that style.
As much as I wanna praise the movie for this, it falls flat from the bad script and characters. Everyone is a cliche, from a defiant kid who's had a bad family life, to a generic love interest, and the father who just doesn't understand his kid. I found them very boring and uninteresting. The script was also very conventional at many points in the film. For example the main character does a Google search and now knows nearly everything about the witch. We also have the kid get bullied for no reason, I'm so sick of this trope in these kind of movies.
My best advice for the Pierce Brothers is to get a better screenwriter. I think they make much better directors than writers. But because of their awesome skills as directors I'm still interested to see what they do next.
Son of Rambow (2007)
Doesn't know what kind of film it's trying to be
This is by no means a bad movie, but it is a very confused one and doesn't exactly know what kind of film it's trying to be. Thus, it didn't quite hit the mark for me.
Back to the Future Part III (1990)
The weakest of the trilogy is still decent
A solid conclusion to the trilogy, even if it's the weakest...
I think the West is a cool setting, but I thought it was a little out of place for this series. It was a weird jump to start in the past, the future, then the West. It reminds me of when they decided to go with an alien vibe for Indiana Jones 4. I also found the usual Back To The Future tropes to be the most awkward for this film. Marty's great grandparents were underutilized and felt useless to the story. I wasn't as invested in the characters as much in this western setting, unlike the first two.
This is still a decent movie though, Robert Zemeckis directs this movie wonderfully. All the actors are spot on. I loved that this film gave Doc Brown more as a character. It was cool seeing someone like him fall in love. Buford was a nice addition for Biffs family line. Lastly, I did like the white knuckled train scene at the end, it was pretty suspenseful and a nice climax to top off the trilogy.
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008)
A mixed bag of a RomCom
There's a lot to like in Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist. Good direction, a cool New York location, a decent soundtrack, and solid acting from our two main leads. Micheal Cera (as usual) brings this movie his A-game.
There's only one main issue I have with this film, and it's a BIG one. This movie's writing is really bad. Even though the actors are doing their best delivery, they can't change the fact that these are bad lines. Any character that isn't Nick and Norah are either, annoying, idiotic, stereotypes, or just plain unlikable. This plot is a wishy washy/generic portrayal of how people think teens act or do.
Overall I found this to be a mixed bag of a Romantic Comedy.
AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
Such a mess...
This is the runt of the litter for both the Alien and the Predator franchise.
This movie is so ugly looking, with bad CGI, poor lighting, and fight scenes that are so hard to make out with how dark this movie is.
You would think a movie like Alien vs Predator would be simple to make. But this is the second time they screwed it up.
Everyone (just like the last movie) is a stereotype, except these characters are more annoying and make worse decisions then then the first AVP.
This movie could have been so much more with xenomorphs in the city, an R-rating, and a cross breed between an alien and a predator. It's a shame they did nothing with these ideas.
Stay far away from this movie...
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010)
A dull version of LOTR
Even though I don't particularly like these movies I understand why someone might like the first and even the second film to a certain extent.
But this movie jumps the saga into a highly inferior version of Harry Potter, LOTR, and GOT.
I understand that Tayler Lautner has abs, and that's the only appeal. But in all seriousness I can't name one thing this film got right. It took all the problems from the previous two movies and amplified it, making it one of the most insufferable movies to sit through. It took me three attempts to watch this pile of wolf crap.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)
Morally messed up
Its better made than the first movie. It has cooler shots and visual effects.
But it's still a terrible movie with a more unpleasant plot. Bella makes every bad decision in the book. She's also manipulative and a bad role model. This movie also backs up how toxic her relationships are.
Twilight (2008)
So bad that its entertaining
Yeah, it's bad. But I still find it entertaining, what else can I say? It's a guilty pleasure.
Btw I'm team Edward...
Starship Troopers (1997)
A fun gore-fest, but that's about it
Sure, the characters are all stereotypes. The main character is a bland military grunt. Sure, the bugs are underdeveloped as antagonists. Sure, it feels like a video game.
But it is a undeniably fun gore-fest through and through. The action is very awesome and visually impressive . Even though the movie has many issues, it's pretty self aware and only cares about entertainment and for that I commend this movie.
Chef (2014)
After the film you'll crave Cuban sandwiches...
Whether you like John Favreaus work or not, he gives his all in this movie.
This movie is realistic and the characters never felt like they were reading a script, the actors seemed to work off each other naturally with improv.
This is also a compelling story, I genuinely cared about the relationship between Carl Casper and his son. This movie is also funnier than I expected, mostly coming from character interactions.
And the food... The food in this movie looks gorgeous. It's obviously a big part of the film and the way the food is depicted makes your mouth water. Your going to crave Cuban sandwiches after this movie is over.
The few flaws with the movie is some of the pacing of the second half of the movie could be better. And I didn't really care about the Twitter references. I know Chef Casper can be full of himself in the beginning but him not being able to work Twitter was out of place and stupid.
Overall, I was impressed with this movie and I would love to see Favreau tackle smaller movies like this. I would be more interesting in that than another Disney product (although the mandalorian is good). The fact that he can juggle direction, script, and a starring role in one movie and making it work well shows how dedicated he really is.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Didn't wanna believe the negative reviews, but they were right
This movie has a stellar performance from Margot Robbie! She's one of the only reasons to see this film. She fully embraced the anarchy of Harley Quinn and isn't just eye candy like in suicide squad. Also the action is colorful and fun. The humor from Harley Quinn mostly worked.
Unfortunately everything else is very one note and bad, namely the awful plot. I'd argue that this movies story is even worse than suicide squad. It's so disposable and cliche, it's about a power hungry villain wanting a diamond stolen from a thief. All the other characters are either redundant or pointless. Black mask is just another angry rich jerk, the thief kid is laughably underdeveloped, and huntress feel like she belongs in a different movie. Lastly, this didn't really need to be a birds of prey movie, they don't team up until the very end and it felt awkward and forced.
I wanted to like this from the interesting trailer, but it's very underwhelming.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016)
Should be kept in the shadows
Although I found this one more entertainingly bad than the last one, it has an even worse script. The plot is all over the place and is incoherent. Unless you're a big TMNT fan, I would keep this movie left in the shadows.
Spotlight (2015)
A well written biopic
A film that starts off average for the first half hour but turns into something very compelling. This biopic might not be for everyone since the subject matter can be pretty disturbing and uncomfortable. But it definitely made me feel something at the end of the movie.
The interviews with the victims made you understood how bad this scandal really was and they never shy away from telling you how unsettling it was to have someone you trust do things that disturb you. For that I commend this movie. Mark Ruffalo gives the performance of his career. I also liked the small scene at the end with Rachel McAdams and her grandma reading the article toward the end.
Some issues are the first 30 minutes before the plot really gets going. It felt inconsequential to the rest of the movie. Also some characters aren't as well developed as others, I didn't really care about anyone outside of the spotlight team.
Overall I recommend this movie as long as you can handle the touchy subject matter
