Inferno (2016)
Tom Hanks can't do miracles
As I saw that this is another Tom Hanks movie, I was obviously interested. It's one of my favorite actors. However, this movie turned out to be pretty bad, I would say. Although the plot and the idea behind the movie sounded pretty interesting, it just turned out very unlogical and stupid. Like some virus could erase half humanity from the place where it was located. Tch, give be me a break.
Also, as much I like puzzles and solving mystery things, the case in this movie was just too far fetched and didn't make any sense.
Hallucinations were also very annoying to viewer and didn't make sense either.
Acting was decent from everybody I guess. And of course, Tom Hanks was as good as always.
Still, like I said on the title, Tom Hanks can't do miracles. Very good actor in pretty bad movie isn't just going to save it.
Sully (2016)
Very good film, but I expected more.
I've always been very interested about aviation accidents and I've watched pretty much EVERY episode of Air Crash Investigations -TV program. And there is one story which most of us recognize and / or remembers, including myself. Yes, this movie tells the very same story. About the emergency landing on freezing water with almost full passenger plane.
When I first saw this movie, I was like "Oh wow, there is actual movie out of it. It must be great." And then I looked cast "Oh my GOD, and my absolute favorite character (Tom Hanks) on the main role! Now I MUST watch it!"
And yeah I did that.
It turned out to be pretty different than I expected. I was expecting more catastrophe film like The Perfect Storm" or Titanic or something like that.
To be honest, I didn't like those "hallucinations" and different memories that pilot saw.
It's kind of weird that it shows the accident by piece by piece. But however, I understand it because this story was more on the pilot's side. I mean the investigation that focused on human errors. And it was great to see how they managed to fight back.
And here, Tom Hanks really nails it again. Just gotta love every role he acts. He just is excellent actor, no matter what role.
In the end, movie still turned to be very great, although I didn't get quite what I expected.
The Finest Hours (2016)
Looking similar movies to Perfect Storm? Then this is the right choice!
Yes. First thing first, like I said on the tittle, if you are looking good old and well made disaster movies, you WILL like this. Especially this one is almost "identical" movie to Perfect Storm. Both tells the true story about accident on the sea.
But about this movie. It is true story of oil tanker, SS Pendleton, which broke into half near of east-coast of USA. This accident happened in 1952, so the movie and milieu is just like that. Like you really can see that like cars and clothing really is old.
The crew manage to keep half of the ship on surface and soon Coast Guards hears about the accident, they'll have to do what they have to do. The weather is worst possible but they will start the massive rescue operation with small crew - and with the small rescue boat.
The storm and the filming in the sea is really well made. It looks real and you really can feel that you are also in the middle of the storm. Acting is also very good.
There still was couple things that took away those 2 stars. And that was the woman, and such a cliché love story behind it. Well, this IS the production of Disney after all.. What can you expect.
But if looking the big picture, this movie is totally worth of watching! It's really hard to say which one I would pick if I must choose between The Finest Hours and the Perfect Storm! I recommend both! These offers amazing experience of moments of disaster on the sea.
Wallander (2005)
Outstanding. I can't describe these movies in any other way.
First of all, greetings from Finland, Kurt Wallander! I usually do not watch a lot film series, but this is just so much different. Better. Much better than ANY other detective series out there. Right now one of our TV-channels are presenting a Wallander movie on Saturdays every week! I'm always eagerly waiting another one and it's easily a highlight of my whole week/weekend at the moment!
Krtister Henriksson is the main reason. Absolutely fantastic actor. He really may be the most memorable and impressive character which I've ever seen. He's calm and clever. I have always good feeling when I watch him playing the role of Kurt Wallander. It's.. Almost like a magic.
Of course the script and screenplay is also very important factor in detective stories. Of course there's couple things here and there which are just slightly impractical or clichés but that actually hasn't never bothered me.
Conclusion; After every movie, I'm happy. And when Wallander usually just walks away at the end of the movie and music starts playing, I feel great, I smile and get shivers. What could be better feeling after watching a movie?
I'm absolutely loving these movies. Krister Henriksson, thank you for being Kurt Wallander for all these years. Golden times that we will never forget.
The Killing Room (2009)
Plot is poor, but still average execution
Okay, little different review this time. Let's gather the stars. I really like and hunt this kind of movies. Trapped/surviving kind of films. Especially when actors and filming scenes are very limited. I really like that. This gives alone 3/10 stars to any movie.
Let's continue. About the story line and script. It's pretty dumb. You actually do not know anything what's going on. No, not even when the movie ends. This... Ah.. This feels like just pointless. I really can't even say what they were researching. Script goes just way too far and it gets complex and confusing. Is that good movie when you don't get the idea of the film? Or what is happening? I don't think so. No stars this time. 3/10
Next the execution. All the actors did quite good job. They acted well and the atmosphere was intriguing and mysterious, somewhat tensed through the whole movie. But one word about that situation with woman... I hate it. I-f******-hate-it. Generally any movie which has the situation where someone do something, and suddenly that action was only imagination/dream, should be rated 0/10. It's most idiotic thing in the movie industry. BUT, apart from that, the filming was executed quite nicely. Let's give 2 stars from here.
Conclusion 5/10. Good acting and the style of filming save this movie from catastrophe. I didn't like the screenplay. It's just too weird and profound for my taste. Not the best movie, but not the worst. Average movie in trapped/surviving genre.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015)
Absolutely loving this film series!
First of all, I've watched the first movie and I rate it 10/10. Really. I'm loving this series so far. This just hits in me the right category of the sci-fi movies. It's mysterious and adventurous. I generally do not like post-apocalyptic things and ESPECIALLY those mainstream zombies... But yeah. Zombies was the only thing why this was one star worse than first movie.
But Like in the first movie, actors are brilliant! Special effects and milieu is just fascinating and stunning! I really like how this was written and directed, how things is getting forward. I haven't read the book and I'm not gonna read. And I don't personally give a s*** about illogical things in the story line; like how the world is ended up like that. Where the infection came from etc. And how much this is different from book...
The movie itself is just amazing and exciting to watch and you really can feel the suspense. I really was in the edge of my seat at the end! And oh boy... I'm SO excited when I read there IS really coming another sequel in 2018; "Maze Runner - The Death Cure" YESS!! Can't wait it.
This may not give all the answers what you basically want when watching movie, but in this case, that does not bother me. As long there is sequel(s) coming. These are meant to be watched right after another one.
If you like adventure movies, combined with sci-fi and little bit mystery and action, go watch this film series! (After watching the predecessor)
Djúpið (2012)
Average as film, quite good as story
The Deep. Based on true story of Icelandic man, named Gulli, who fights his way back on the land from freezing water after the accident where trawler flips over and all other crew members get killed.
After over 6 hours in the freezing water and couple hours of walking, the man survives.
It's an interesting story and the film does not end when the man survives. It tells the story after the accident and about the life that the Gulli is gonna experience after the tragic event.
Yeah, the story is well executed and quite intriguing (yeah, it's based on real story after all), but everything else is so-so made. Personally I didn't like the style of filming and any of the characters. Actually, you do not know anything about them. Proper introduction would be good, even so they all die quite quickly in the film. The acting itself is weird.. Especially the main character..
The movie itself could be better if it was written and directed LITTLE differently than the real events. I mean enjoyment is quite missing and it does not feel like a movie. It's more like a document.
Well, if you like these kind of movies which are made purely with real life events, you could like this. This does not offer you as much as a movie. I prefer Perfect Storm movie than this... It's kind of similar story but.. It's just executed and written better.
(Ps. Sorry about my English..)
Bicentennial Man (1999)
Impressive and moving film
Wow. I'm almost speechless. I've seen quite few robot/android movies, but this one is maybe the best of all. I think mostly because of Robin Williams, such a AMAZING actor. One of my favorites.
Actually the whole script and story line was moving and well made. It almost made me cry, and I'm not very emotional person. It's just wonderful how Andrew wants to be human and have emotions and even die just like humans do.
There is one thing that I didn't like though. I personally "hate" it when the robots look like 100% human (actor) I mean there SHOULD be some things that tell you that it's definitely robot. It's stupid that it is completely human.
But basically, I don't have much more to say. Still truly impressive and emotional movie. Definitely recommend it! Well done Robin Williams, again.
Last Train to Freo (2006)
Pretty bad movie..
I almost instantly know when couple first minutes of the film was passed that this is not gonna be as good as the Last Passenger was. Well, turned out this isn't actually even close of it.
Both basically are "one filming location" - movies and they are filmed on the train.
It's actually hard to pick any good things. I always like when actors and and filming scenes are limited. Still this was too pointless and does not make sense. I didn't like any of the actors (or character), except Lisa.
The ending and the whole plot was stupid. Not to mention about the acting. Pointless shouting and goofing around
To summarize, It's not total catastrophe, but really close of it. I do not recommend to watch this. If you're up to train movies, go watch Last Passenger.
The Terminal (2004)
Very interesting movie. Turned up quite good!
Yeah. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Those were the reason why I picked this movie. And when I read about that this is real story, it's even better. It's awesome that Spielberg paid 250 000 dollars for the guy which this movie is based on. Cool. I have always liked this "one filming location" -styled movies also. That's part of why I like Tom Hanks movies in generally. (Like in Cast Away, Green Mile, Forrest Gump) They don't have bunch of filming locations and are quite slow paced.
But about the movie itself. Pros: It's good. I have ALWAYS loved Tom Hanks and it's definitely one of my favorite actors. Of course, it did good job in this movie. It's quite slow paced and funny occasionally. It was very enjoyable to watch. The story behind Viktor Navorski was intriguing.
Cons: The thing that distracted me was how quickly he learned to speaking English. Okay, he was living 9 month total in the terminal but still.. Well, not a big minus. And the other thing was about that woman.. I really was hoping that woman chooses Viktor.
Oh well, those "little" cons take 2 star away but rest of the movie was very good. I think it deserves one star just because it's based on true story.
(Ps. Sorry my bad englsih)
Last Passenger (2013)
Very exciting train trip
Yeah, I've hunted these "one filming location/only few actors" kind of movies lately and this ABSOLUTELY fits in nicely in this category.
I actually doesn't care about plots in this kind of movies, but I must say that, there still COULD be something else in the movie. Maybe something more at the beginning and in the end. Little subplot would be nice. And to be honest, I don't like the idea of driver and his thoughts being unrevealed.
I think those are the reason why this got 7/10 from me. The rest of the film was fantastic! The nice and calm atmosphere before the panic starts fade in and you really start to get thrilled. Even though this is quite "boring" movie. The atmosphere build up nicely and doesn't actually fall flat at any point, which is understandable of course.
I liked it. No plots or anything behind this but still movie is nicely executed. I recommend if you're liking real thrillers (and solid plot is not relevant).
Autómata (2014)
OK movie
Little different movie than I usually watch. Still, it fits nicely in my of my favorite genre, sci-fi. I'll try to keep this short. I loved how brilliantly the robots were done in this film. I really don't know how they do moving robots which can do that and that, but I think it's cool.
The plot and the setting.. There could be definitely some improvements. The milieu and the desert area could be better. Definitely when it is year 2044. It's not far from present.
Also, it's actually nice how robots almost have feelings at the end. They want to develop and "live" as well.
Yeah. That's pretty much it. It's average film.
Panic Button (2011)
Turns out quite good movie after all
What can I say? I like when filming scenes and actors are very limited. That together with horror and trapped like situation is awesome combination. Love it. But yeah, the movie is independent and you really can notice it. The filming and atmosphere is kind of different than normally. It's a good thing. Not too much actors and I think those four main actors does REALLY good job.
The negatives: I think the ending and script would be the weak point of the film. There could be a liittle more information about everything. Also the climax and ending is quite odd.
I still enjoyed this movie. It's a really good movie in it's genre. Although it's kind of used genre. Like in Saw movies. ("do you wanna play a game?"), but with a twist. I would gladly recommend if you like to watch horror/trap -kind of movies, with limited actors and scenes.
Prisoners (2013)
2:30 hours went in a flash
Okay. Where to begin? Let's start with that this is one exciting kidnapping/detective movie, thats for sure. From the beginning to the end this was very interesting to watch. Not much boring situations or pointless filming. The atmosphere is nice, kind of dark, calm, but still dense and threatening. It's quite unique. Not too much actors or subplots.
7 is still the highest rate I can give. There's still too many problems in the movie. The whole kidnapping thing does not make sense. And the movie leave behind couple questions. First: What the heck was the point of that other suspect, who committed suicide? And what about his mazes? Other irksome thing was the ending. What about the Dover? You just can't end the movie like that. It makes the whole movie pointless. And very sad. It's just wrong that father does everything to save her daughter, and eventually girl survives, but he still never see her again. This really wasn't truly happy ending. Although it's good that there are movies which doesn't have cliché ending. Still, it's quite sad.
However, like I said, the movie itself was enjoyable to watch. Good acting and atmosphere. Interesting and deep. I really recommend to watch if you like detective stories.
(PS. When I first saw the detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) I was wondering through the movie, where I have seen him before... Those corners of the mouth was so recognizable. And yes, he does EXCELLENT job in this movie! Very good actor. I couldn't remember it until now I watched the filmography after the movie. And yeah, it's known from the catastrophe movie, The Day After Tomorrow (Sam Hall), which is also great movie.)
The Perfect Storm (2000)
Impressively implemented movie about power of nature and based on true story
This wasn't my first time when I watched this movie. I think I have seen it at least once before, but it's been quite long time..
Yeah, title says everything. Impressive movie. Acting and plot isn't the best what I have seen, but that's not the movies point - being full of movie stars and plot twists. It's catastrophe movie after all. And based on true story.
The ending is wistful, but I guess this was what happened then. I think this would be even better if this wouldn't based on true story and everybody don't die.
Still, very good movie.
3 Idiots (2009)
Now it's clear why this have such popularity
I rarely watch this kind of movies. I mean "real movie theater movies". I usually watch low budget indie type mystery/scifi/horror movies, but this time I was looking some comedy to watch. And found this. And I'm very glad I did!
Let's start with that fact this is comedy after all. It does this job very well. BUT, there is just A LOT more than that! This is clever, this is very, very emotional. Tears wasn't so far away to come for me. Really. I think I have never been so touched when watching a movie. And I'm not even very emotional person. (I think watching this alone with headphones contribute this fact.)
Something also fascinates me about Indian culture also. I think the language is awesome! I have watched also the "Slumdog Millionaire" movie and must say that these are only two movies from India, which I have seen and jeez! Very good movies coming from Bollywood.
All actor AMAZED me! Not to mention Aamir Khan definitely the most! What a talent. Of course, excellent directing was also very important! Such a clever screenplay. And I have also used to watch movies less than 2 hours but these three hours went in a flash when watching this.
It's wonderful how this was actually comedy, but was also so instructive and emotional at same time. Loved it. Great work Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani!
Into the Wild (2007)
Just pointless bullshit..
This really was one of like 10 000 movies which I couldn't watch to the end. I just couldn't. It was so bad. No solid plot, nothing. I already wasted hour to watch this. And there was another 1,5 hours to go. NO thanks! If someone says that "you can't review this because you didn't watch this entirely", that's bullshit. That doesn't erase that fact this was SO bad, POintless and BOring that I couldn't watch more. There was nothing that could keep me watching. I don't get it why this movie have such overrated score.
This is just too profound and thoughtful to me and it's not entertaining or enjoyable. I really prefer even absurd and insane plots than not plot at all.
I actually was thinking this would be another "surviving" movie, where someone is trapped or lost in the wilderness or something like that. I didn't actually read any information about this. Just went with cover and title. I was hoping that this would be like "127 Hours" movie. That was actually awesome movie. This doesn't deserve to be watched 2 and half hours.
Ghost Ship (2002)
Surprisingly bad..
I'm not fan of ghost stories, but what sounds more mysterious and pulsating than empty cruise ship floating around the sea?! But first impression actually deceives. It's a shame.
I really like mysterious and scifi things. This has very attractive plot, but ghosts... Nah. Yes, I actually didn't even expected much, since this IS ghost movie. It's said on title.
I have actually watched very similar movie, where some crew also founds empty cruising ship and start exploring it. I don't remember that movie's name. And I don't spoil that other movie too much, but I say that it's not a ghost movie. It has it's own things. It's way much better that way.
This wasn't that good.
Cabin Fever (2002)
Better than Cabin In The Woods..
Yep. I "accidentally" found this movie after couple weeks since I watched the "Cabin In The Woods" -movie. This just sounded so similar that I decided to watch it, although I didn't "enjoyed" Cabin In The Woods movie that much.
Well, this certainly is better. Not much, but slightly. I think this respect more the original horror genre. This is pure.
What I don't like is that there is too much "peekaboo" scenes. Really, it's just annoying. There's no need for them. Especially when you are not in the mood of being scared. I mean I really like the horrifying feeling and atmosphere that film creates, but scaring is really not necessary in this case.
Well. It still was a good original horror movie, with twist of some kind of scifi-virus. Very interesting. I think I'm watching the second movie also. it's called "Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever".
Moon (2009)
Wonderful movie
I try to keep this review short. So, what can I say about the movie. It's wonderful. It's clever. Well made.
This sure is scifi and I haven't watched actually anything like this before. Especially it's amazing to watch this alone with headphones and dive into the silent space. Great atmosphere.
Plot itself is quite confusing at first, but all come clear when you stay focused and just keep watching. It's truly quite impressive plot.
And also both main actors did good job. And Gerty! I love that machine so much <3
Truly great movie when you're watching it with right state of mind.
The Maze Runner (2014)
This really was "my dreams come true" -movie
YES! This really was one of the best movies in this genre (for me) of all time! I really don't usually give high ratings for movies (especially not the best possible), but I MUST to give this movie. There really is everything I like!
Let's gather all my favourite things about the movie: 1. Let's start here this is scifi movie. I like just particular type of scifi and it's hard to find. And this is one of them 2. Limited filming scene with limited actors 3. The maze itself. I LOVE mazes. They are just fascinating for me. And when the labyrinth changes every night, it's even better. 4. Plot does not fall flat as the movie goes on. It stays very interesting. 5. The idea to be trapped in somewhere where "victims" must survive is my favourite type of genre. (Like Cube movies. I really don't care about the plot at all, when I'm watching that kind of movies.) 6. Adventurous and has cool technical creatures.
And yeah. What more can I say. I also loved the acting, especially by main character. Many people says that it's not that great, but in my opinion it is. Everyone act their roles well.
I really can't pick up the minuses. If I HAVE to say something, it was the ending. But it wasn't a big let down. Especially when I know that the sequel is coming so maybe everything comes clear in that film. So it doesn't lower the vote.
I really enjoyed this one!
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Quite interesting movie
Okay, let's start with fact that I'm writing this review after couple weeks since I watched this so I can't tell very precisely the details.
But yeah, I still remember the main things about the movie. The idea itself is just interesting. It's not that boring and plot goes on quite well.
What I don't like, was the zombies and just too weird animal.. creatures.. monster things. That just went little bit too far for me.
Also ending was.. Mm.. Quite odd.
But yeah, generally this was OK movie. Like I said, I don't remember the details precisely, but it's still Average movie.
The Strangers (2008)
Typical peekaboo horror movie..
I really didn't expect much when I was looking a movie to watch and found this. What can I say?
Well, this is just another peekaboo horror movie which contains a lot of very long and tedious slow paced scenes, which usually ends up scaring the daylights out of the viewer with loud sound effects. (Especially it was quite a challenge to me watch this with headphones at 3:00-4:30am. LoL) And of course, this also follow the "hidden faces" -rule like many horror/torture movies. So you never see the faces of the bad guys. I actually hate that.. But yeah, it just "belongs" in this genre.
Also there's no plot or ideas behind this. This also "belongs" in this kind of movies; Some psychopaths kill people without reason and they usually don't speak anything. And where is all other people? They are just alone?
But about the movie itself: It was very apprehensive to watch. It just managed keep to the up the ominous atmosphere. I'm not actually a huge fun with that feeling so I can't say I enjoyed it. Someone who hunts movies with frightening and anxious atmosphere like in this movie, might enjoy a lot.
Still, I must say I liked it. (That doesn't mean I enjoyed it.) It just was quite exciting to watch. Nothing too special, but a just normal peekaboo horror movie.
Time Lapse (2014)
Fantastic, intriguing idea and concept.. BUT
I must say that I'm kind of fan such ideas and plots like this. I like scifi and low budget, indie type movies. I love thinking the past and future and paradoxes. This is a rare find.
I picked this movie just with those reasons, and I don't regret it. It's well made and acted. It's intense -on it's own weird way and you just want to keep watching.
BUT! Here comes the minuses; I must say I'm still little disappointed the way how this was written. So much wasted potential. This movie really was 10/10 until the stupid plot twist came in at the very end of the movie. It was downhill right there. The plot just goes little bit too far. Too complicated and weird.
But well.. Like I said. I don't regret that I watched this. It's still a good movie with fascinating idea and atmosphere spiced with good actors.
