Hounded (2022)
So bad am speechless
It's very hard to put into words how dire this film is. From the plot to the poor, acting to the whole stupidity of everything. This film seems to be in keeping with the present times and attitude. London thieving youff verses the old order and colonial pomposity. In a nutshell, criminals try to rob a stately home and are then pursued by the aristocracy with their hinds (sic) in revenge for their transgression. Acting on either side is pathetic and unbelievable. I found myself wishing that the thieves would hurry up and die. I think the viewer is meant to root for the feral thieves. One thief gets caught in a bear trap that he never saw in six inches of grass even though the trap is huge. He then spends most of the rest of the film with a slight limp. This is one of the most cringe worthy films in the history of cinema.
The Martian (2015)
Space thingy's not my strongest subject...
Firstly I would like to thank a lot of the reviewers who have educated me about space and the laws of physics etc in some very humorous ways and in other ways used sarcasm in ingenious ways to point out the flaws in the movie to people like myself that know zilch about the workings of anything outside of my bicycle.
Myself I thought the Martian was a great movie and I was entertained throughout. My suspension of disbelief was not needed as I lack any understanding of basic physics. The only part of the film that I thought was any way phoney was the whole world watching the whole rescue of our modest hero of the hour in real-time. Added to this everyone waving little American flags in celebration of the rescue. I like Americans but this flag waving was quite far fetched as most of the world can't stand America (rolflmao) and most people are more likely to burn it than wave it..... the end.
Lone Survivor (2013)
Full of something that rhymes with kryptonite....
It seems that the US film makers are trying hard to show how invincible US Seals are but in their mission to demonstrate this on film they neglect any military tactics or standard operating procedures that are disciplines of professional soldiering and replace it with marvel comic type formats. This basically kills the reality of what really happens. Also the gung ho brigade who believe this sort of tripe help to give some movies and inflated score on IMDB that's undeserving as in this case.
Four seals sent on a mission to observe a Terrorists movements in a Afghan village are quickly compromised by three goat herders. These SF soldiers are seen in a heavily wooded area during the day while half asleep. They dont even hear the bells on the goats until they are on top of them. For SF soldiers this is bordering on incompetent. While they only partially hide themselves they leave their bergens in the open. After deciding not to tie up the herders and let them go they then bimble up the hillside as theirs comms are not working and they need to be extracted asap. At this stage one of the herders has legged it down the hillside to inform the Taliban of the presence of enemy troops. The Taliban who are use to moving around the mountains on foot catch up with the Seals and are engaged in a fire fight. One Seal expresses surprise that the Taliban have caught them up so quickly. What ensues next is something out of a comic. The only thing the Seals lacked where superman capes. It seems that in their training they are taught to jump off cliffs upto 30 or 40 metres and bounce themselves off the rocks without injury. I stopped watching after one Seal was told he had been shot in the head and didnt realise........I mean if you've been shot in the head by an AK47 surely you would feel something?...........The end.
Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins (2021)
Rise of the Toupee
This story has been done to death. 3 or 4 lads that can have a bit of a fight decide to punch above their weight and get leathered. Or in this case literally blown away in a Landrover.
The end.
If you can over look the despicableness of the characters and over acting then you can let artistic licence come into play and enjoy the toupees. As wigs go they are in a league of their own and the unintended comic value is priceless. Various wigs were used in this production and a big shout goes to the stunt wigs which managed to hang on in there however ludicrous the scenes. There was other scenes that were intended to be comic which were not as the characters delivering the gags were so unlikeable.
Save your time and money and use the money charitably and send it to the home for washed out wigs foundation.
Tin Star (2017)
Dont take it too serious....
Lots of mixed reviews for this show and for very good reason. It is a thriller cum modern day western and darkly comic in a Tarantino fictitious way that is is farcically over acted. Episode one series one seems to start off with a good storyline based on a newly immigrated British family into Canada. The main protagonist is Jack Worth played by Tim Roth who is an ex British Police deep undercover agent who has settled into a idyllic quiet Canadian town and is chief of police. Multiple characters come into play very quickly and the story lines shoot off in unexpected directions with unexpected consequences. If you suspend your disbelief and everything you know about law and order and life in general it can be entertaining. But if your irritated by stories like a chief of police who can gun down his own deputy on more than one occasion without anyone batting an eye then this could be for you. The show is riddled with psychopaths and sociopaths which include the chief of police and his family who only shed the merest tear when their 5 year old son and brother has his head blown off, oh hum never mind let's crack on with our Lunacy and revenge. Tim Roth seems to be able to carry a pistol in his hand constantly whether in Canada or England without as so much as a glance from the general public. It's all rather bizarre and Roths wife and daughter can be entertaining and totally irritating at the same time. If you like Tarantino with hints of Monty Python and killing eve then you have lift off. If on the other hand you want quality and substance with believable character and story then watch something different.
Fauda (2015)
Chaos
Fauda - Chaos
This is a well written and acted series based around a Specialist Anti Terrorist Israeli unit. It is fast paced and action packed. Controversially it tells each story from an Israeli view. This isn't a bad thing considering the media biased toward the Israel - "so called" Palestinian conflict. The series pulls no punches however and freely shows the brutal methods and actions of both sides in this complicated no quarter given war. As in all wars the innocent casualties are considerable and tragic. This is demonstrated some what more in series 3 with the transition of "Bashar" from innocent naive teenager into a cold blooded murderer. This circle of tit for tat violence seems to only create more Terrorists and counter Terrorists and around and around we go. Looking through this curtain from the outside you can see that Israel's survival in the middle east is being fought daily, rightly or wrongly the "so called" Palestinians in support of Hamas teach their children to hate were as the Jews teach their children to love. The tragedy of the Palestinians who just want peace and prosperity like the Israelis is heart breaking. The series also looks at the effects of PTSD on all of those taking part in the conflict as well as their families and wider communities. If I have any criticism of the series it is that it become a bit too "Hollywood" especially in series 3 were all operational discipline and sense were left in the bin and a lot of the realism therefore was thrown out the window. All in all this is worth watching and will guarantee it is uncomfortable and controversial but enjoyable viewing.
The Man Who Would Be King (1975)
The Son of God goes forth to war a Kingly Crown to gain........
This film is top draw and should be much higher in the IMDB ratings. Some of the guff that is rated above it is indictive more of souls that lack adventure and crave inane action movies with little substance.
A book by Rudyard Kipling " A man who would be king" tells an adventurous tale of two British soldiers who stayed in India after serving in the Empire wars. This is a time before globalism and political correctness and when men were men. Michael Caine and Sean Connery play the parts with great enthusiasm and humour and are realistic in their portrayal of men who have been Soldiers and are Free Masons. Christopher Plummer is also exceptional as Rudyard Kipling. If you want a good story told about adventure, War, friendship and resilience then this is a good a watch as any. The ending brings a tear to my eye always
Meet Joe Black (1998)
More pause than Lion King
Lets get the criticism out of the way first. Imagine your watching a film with your annoying kid brother and every time someone spoke your annoying kid brother paused the film and you had to wait a minute to find out what the other person said until play was pressed and the film resumed. Well Joe Black is a bit like this. It is 3 hours long and at least an hour is taken up with PAUSES. Secondly the character death who has been around since the big bang has been as observant of humankind as an ostrich with its head in the sand. You would think he knew everything....WRONG. His EUREKA moment is the discovery of peanut butter which goes to show that Death is really an American at heart. Did I mention the longful looks?...No....well imagine you had a annoying kid brother who pressed pause when your watching a film every time people looked at each other....you know where I am going.....
For such a great cast and what could have been a much better story and for wasting most of the 3hrs on freeze frame cinema I will give a 4.....RIP Anthony Hopkins
Dead Man's Shoes (2004)
Shockingly good...
Oh my word.
Firstly I am stunned I have never heard or seen a clip of this before. I stumbled on a short scene of this on you tube and was intrigued from watching this morsel. I felt compelled to watch this straight away and was not disappointed. This is a low budget British film that falls into several categories, Revenge, darkly comic, Thriller cum horror. It is also a tale of loss and being lost and borders on the supernatural and mental illness. I was actually scared watching this and shocked to be honest. There is no finesse or pomp in its acting and the characters are mainly unpleasant .Paddy Consadines portrayal as Richard is up there with Ben Kingsleys Don Logan and Joe Pesci's Tommy DeVito and is thoroughly menacing. I highly recommend this.
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
OK ish
This in my opinion is a movie you may watch once but never again. Its not a film that I will retain in my film collection. I don't know how it managed a 7.1 on IMDb but what do I know? There is no great story line to this movie its flat and plodding with slow though simple to understand dialogue. I feel that the humour that's there is forced and has no punch. I never felt either that I was rooting for our four man band or too worried about the heroine as there was no real sense of urgency or danger. As a horror / western it is probably in the B movie bracket. There is nothing special or to write home about in this film "so move on there people there's nothing to see here".
Childhood's End (2015)
A fine line between genius and insanity.
To coin a phrase by Captain Edmund Blackadder when commenting on one of Baldricks poems.....
It begins OK, trails off in the middle and the least said about the end the better, quite sums this up.
since I never read the book by Arthur C Clark I can make no comparison between the book or the film or it's interpretation. Having said that the story seems to have no rhyme or reason and I found it confusing. I am not sure whether this is too intellectually clever and I am still at the monkey stage in 2001 a Space Odyssey and its beyond me or it's just a mi-sh mash of various characters thrown together with no story of substance and the substance that it has really has not been thought out at all.
If this was suppose to be about human evolution to a higher plane then it's flawed. If your a belief that Love is all there is and it's the center of the universe and unconditional love is the highest spiritual point a human can attain then forget it. The new generation of humans are unloving brat like robotic children who follow the god Jennifer.
In a word Boll ocks.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
Class.
Absolutely enjoyed this film. I love a film that is compulsive and enjoyable and absorbing and the H8 is one of those films. As usual with Tarantino anything politically correct is thrown in the dustbin for starters. The dialogue is always a key to great story telling and QT does it effortless. The characters have great presence and strong individuality right down to the choreographed movements. This film is a great western a whodunit a thriller and pure comedy gold all rolled together in a film reefer. I won't spoil the film plot as you need to go and watch. Did I mention the gore? oh yes true to QT it has all the gore you need. The great thing about this film is I am still smiling this morning.
Shooters (2001)
True Grit.
This is a unique crime drama slash documentary type production, All the roles are played by non actors and are some way or other part of the criminal underworld. Loosely based on some events and underworld changes that took place in Liverpool in the 1990's this is a gritty realistic and mostly unpleasant look at that that time. It is also a story of every city or town in the world and their lowlife inhabitants and how their everyday dealings and actions impact on the community and mainly each other. This is an interesting look at gangsters without out the glamorous rose tinted spectacles and it really shows how there is no honour amongst thieves. Don't expect a type of Goodfellas story with a nice musical score, lots of fashion and lots of models. What you see is what you get.
