admiral, we salute you!

full throttle navel action that has to be seen to believe. after a slow but important first half this korean movie goes into high gear with an all out battle film that is very rewarding. totally engrossing and very entertaining.

i have seen my fair share of Asian war epics and this was one of the more enjoyable one, a bit melodramatic but thats fine. as a costume drama its gorgeous and with limited cgi it all looks very realistic.i must say it looks stunning from start to finish

if your looking for something epic to watch and you don't mind subtitle's then this one is for you plus all gaming buffs take not this is how to make a battle movie.

passion for this movie is needed
23 September 2013
Don't know why but i liked this movie. i cant defend it so i wont you either like movies like this or you don't. i found it easy to watch and i really like mickey rourke he was perfect for this sad puppy clinging to life and its bitter truths. megan fox although i have not seen her in much was very beautiful and angelic. but for what it worth i do think critic on this medium where a bit harsh, and mean spirited on a film thats was made for the a limited crowd. bill murry i was going to say something very cleaver but alas all i can say is a very gifted actor. the blu-ray was very disappointing with no extras or commentary. there is no reason for a new release in 2013 to have nothing on the disk and on a blu-ray thats just unforgivable.

paradise aways has its price

this honest look at surfing and living in the 70's is not to be missed and you don't need to be a surfer to enjoy this classic piece of Australian cinema. beautifully shot from the land and in the ocean it draws you into the world of these two brother that are as different as chalk and cheese. but both love to surf.

sam worthington plays a drifter hippy who become part of there lives.bring a women with him to add fuel to there little world. but it there love of surfing and doing a job you love not a job you have too do that make the movie so enjoyable. and it not a surf movie that dies the minute it leaves the beach, you follow these guys in and out of the water with as much interest.

an all round great film that made me long for the beach and a simpler time.if you want to see a good Australian drama that not just made for TV check it out.

film noir in the tropics
28 April 2013
A big fan of j lee thompson and charles bronson i found this movie worth a watch. its very layed back and old school like a visit to your folks.its south American local and tropic feel was a real plus and Charley was in in good form.but thompson was slumming it a bit, maybe enjoying the sun to much.the pace was slow even for this sort of film.

i think i could of enjoyed it more if the copy i had was any good, but it is poor with only the widescreen formate save it from being unwatchable. it is such a rare movie that i was happy enough to see it at all.

if you enjoy 70's style movies and gumshoe movies give it a go its good late night fodder.

slaters finest hour---and a half
4 March 2013
i just love this movie had not watch this in sometime, i had forgotten how good it was. i just laughed all the way though again slater is perfect in the roll of kuffs. it was a character tailor made for him. the endless banter to the camera is great and yes i no some people hatred it for that alone.each to there own.

the cop story is your standard fare but its like ferris bullers day off with guns.it has good comedy good action and milla what more do you need i mean serious even the non widescreen DVD didn't distract me. and for me that is saying something. yes it is old school but you know thats its appeal it puts a smile on your dial for 90mins.

just a great film, pure and simple
18 October 2012
what a movie, this film just grabs you and does not let go.it's a simple tale done with class and style that Hollywood i feel has forgotten how to make.beautifully shot and actored with suttle performances by tom hardy and gary oldman blended with one manic performance by the great Aussie favorite guy pearce.

the movie is very violent but its real and you don't shy away from the world in which its set were crime and punishment come hand in hand.

Nic cave story and music are just spot on fusing the period and genre to its inevitable showdown. the ending may not been its best moment but the journey there was worth every penny that you should pay to see this classic gangster film for our time.

At last real stormtroopers in space!
10 May 2012
well i don't no where to start but first go see it. its worth it and looks great on the big screen. the f/x are wonderful and the eye for detail is to be commended.

i had read some bad reviews of this movie and i would like to thank them. because my expectations were low going in so to be completely surprise and delighted that they were so wrong.

OK so its a bite of a hit and miss but thats half the fun its like watching a movie your mates would of dreamed up but never had the balls to pull it off.i love film makers that just have a go and this is one. i believe it will be a cult film, lost and forgotten at the cinema but will find it audiences on DVD.

its more than a one joke film and it is hell of a lot of fun. Nazis on the dark side of the moon you cant go wrong.i think i will buy the board game and with this movie playing in the background and some struddle i think i could do no wrong.

a ghost story or a war movie?
4 March 2012
either way this is a good movie, solid suspensor with top performances from an unknown cast. The directer David Twohy keeps surprising me with good work in genre films. He has a good hand at building suspense, looking forward to his Riddick sequel. I was surprised Darren Aronofsky of Black Swan fame help write the story, but he does like physiological thrillers like this. The story does keep you on edge and in dought as to the true course of the events that unfold. Even if your not into ghost stories this is a solid submarine action movie exspecialy in the first half. The f/x of the boat and its plight look very good plus the submarine sets look very convincing with lots of detail.

journey is pure escapist fun
22 January 2012
yes this is pure escapist fun, from the very beginning you are in for some amazing 3d effects ride that did remind me of the first one. the fun of all things coming out at you and the detail of all the cgi is truly amazing. the story though not very deep does try and add as much jules verne flavor as it can. And also keeping the story connected to the original, but in this case only just. anyway i did miss Brenden Frazer but the rock was great as the boys stepfather. and the banter between the Rock and Michael Caine was priceless.

its no Oscar winner but its definitely no dud sequel either. taking 4 bored kids on there last day of the holidays for a treat worked wonders. they loved it, giving it full marks. if thats not a recommendation to see it what is.

a blood soaked modern western
11 December 2011
a hard movie to find, it has taken me 25 years to see this. in Australia this little gem barely got a release back in the day it came and went like most Aussie flicks in a blink of an eye it was gone. and not until now did i see it again at a market place lost among the unwanted classics of a bygone era.

anyway put this movie on your to do list. if you like good action and a modern western theme that goes for the throat, this is for you. don't let the age of this movie stop you it not that bad. in fact it a hoot, it sits on the verge of exploitation movie or as we call it ozplotation. and thats the best place too sit.

tim burstall may not have been the best of our director but he was one of our first to put us on the map.with good solid fun films.and this was no exception.great cast and crew. and the great David eggley behind the lenes, just have a look at his film log it reads full of great looking films. anyway if you can find this gem and it wont be easy ,get it, watch it and enjoy, i did.

good solid action not just for western fans
29 November 2011
this my not be the best western ever made but for my money this is a great action flick. the action has not dated to bad. this is an action movie with the next battle more a priority than plot or story. I'm not saying this is a bad thing because we have see umpteen storys of this type before, so what tom grimes is give us a solid action movie in a western setting.

as for the cast they are just outstanding, especially rachael. I'm a burt fan so he can't do no wrong but the surprise is big jim brown probably his best role. all the extras were good excluding some poor death scenes throughout but hay it is also a western and that comes with the territory.

100m rifles is truly worth seeing and the DVD look stunning a good transfer probably looks better than ever. if you have not watch a western before give it a go if your a western fan give it another go you will be surprised how well it has stood the test of time.

A must for any conan fan
18 August 2011
Enter the world of conan and you enter a world of blood and thunder sword and sorcery. but you enter this world, the film takes you into this male fantasy and keeps you there for 2hrs. and its a very good 2hrs more bone crunching fights more sword play than you could ask for..

cool monsters, great villains, awesome landscape, great set designs and true to conan fans.from the director of pathfinder who has come with the lighting crew this time round.and brought ron pelman along for good measure. the best thing about this movie it does not pander to the critics or the masses it's for the fans and no one else. so if you are a fan of conan or it's type rush in and you wont be disappointed.

No arnie but hay no movies perfect.

argento down under
15 July 2011
Director David hemming worked with dario argento on deep red one of dario's masterpiece's. you can see his influence all over this movie. all though this is no argento classic if your like his work you really should check this out. it contains the creepy mood, the scatological narrative and very good use of sound that is unsettlingly.

even though it.s over long and a bit of a let down in the end, i enjoyed the journey much like a argento films, it not the end but getting there that counts.

you would not no this was an Aussie movie but i suppose it does not matter for the story is universal. dean seale was cinematographer on this and he did a master job creating a mood for this ghost story.

as a piece of Aussie history in cinema when we made a wide variety of genre movies unlike today. plus i had forgot how lovely jenny agutter was i think its time to watch an American werewolf in London again.

kris kristofferson's finest hour
10 June 2011
kris kristofferson plays the rubber duck pitch perfect, you believe he is a trucker you believe people would follower him, either into a fight or on the road. man of few words the Strong silent type a man with a woman in every state.plus a legend for his time. as for convoy what not to like this movie just gets better and better on ever viewing.that may have something to do with my age than the film but still you could not make that today, and i hope they don't.a time cap for the late 70's.

convoy is just good clean fun but make by a great man at the end of his career. so get your self a slab of beer and comfy couch and enjoy. "ten four go buddy!"

move over Charlie we have a new mechanic
5 April 2011
having seen both the old and now the new version of the mechanic,i must say this new film is much better. the old one was good for its day but not one of Charlie's best work.

with some friend the other night we discussed remaking the magnificent 7 we decided on new star for old hero's but one thing we said was do not change the story just leave it as is. well i think the same about this. and the story is basically the same a few changes but not many. but what was changed was the intense action in this, full marks goes to the guy who thought up all the stunts and fight scenes worth the ticket price in my mind.

jason is great as the stone cold killer, made for this role. and Ben frost who i do not no is very good as the apprentice.Simon west has made a smart punchy and violent remake the any action fan should like. too make a remake of a classic is a tough call, but i think it was time. now who is going to make Mr masjestyk? and who will play Charlie... Russell crowe?

a movie for its time, and a movie for all time
19 February 2011
this steve macqueen classic cop film my seem a bit slow to today standands but that does not make it dated. its you the audience thats has been sucked into quick edits with no detail.or real action with real out comes. this cop movie has it all but it deals with the small issues of cop life not the big complicate sub plot that really do anything to enhance a story. our lead is just a good cop doing it tough in a hard world of crime becoming desensitized to it all.who just hasppens to have a mustang that he knows how to drive and drive well. we all know about the car chase but its still worth the rave .its just awesome all muscle and grunt purer adrenaline. if your into cop dramas then look no further the no. one with a bullett.

brilliant intelligent thriller!
7 August 2010
Polanski has an eye for detail and hickcockian suspense that kept me engrossed from start to knockout ending. a story of political intrigue, homicial malice and a witty sometime funny script.

ewen macgregar and piece bronson lead a great cast of internationals with even jim bulushi putting in a fine cameo as ewens boss.

roman Polanski is a hit and miss director for me but this is a definet hit. i was sucked right into this film from the get go and was lost in the world of power and politics. its just a great piece of film making by a legendary director back in true form.Hitchcock would have loved this.

as good as the first .....then some!!!
7 July 2010
an absolute hoot, the best action flick in years it took me back too the 80's when action movies ruled. i saw the first predator in the cinemas back in the day. loved it then love this now.

it takes the series to a whole new level.and i bet there will be more. i hope they do if this is the path there going to take.nimrod has done a great job, it looks great has the feel of the first but with a fresh and fun take on the story.

predators is the return of good old school action with a little sc-fi throwin in. there is no shacky cam or 2 second edits you see the action and feel the pain. you are a legend robert rodriguez. and i thank you.

a grand old adventure
19 April 2010
this is what a good family film is all about. simple great fun with wonder and adventure. my two daughters and i just watched it, and they where wooing and arring at all the right spots.that is all a good yarn has to do, take the kids on a 90min adventure and send them to bed with wonder.so its all a lot of hockem but thats half the fun.you don't need the latest state of the art f/x just a passion to tell a good story.

but i feel this was state of the are back in 1974 so maybe a remake today would be just as good you never no they remade clash of the titans anything is possable. this Disney production was directed by robert stevenson a Disney work horse. who did may fine films for the studio, including mary poppins and herbie films. if your a gen x you would have grow-in up on his work.so it worth a rent. add it to your list of must see classics and surprise your kids they wont regret it.

beautiful beyond comparison
24 November 2009
A must see for anyone who loves photography. stunning and breathtaking, leaves you in ore. seen it twice once in a cinema and now on DVD. it holds up well on DVD but on the big screen this was something else.

Took my two daughters to see this and they loved it, my oldest cried at the end.but she was the one who wanted to see it again tonight when she saw it at the video shop. its simple telling of a child's love for nature and in particular a fox is told well. in some ways it reminded me of the bear in its telling a story not documentary formate. which works for children very well. not being preached to is very important, you make your own mind up.

But the star of this film is the cinematographers, how did they do what they did. amazing just amazing.

better the second time round
14 November 2009
watch this movie about a year ago thought it was good then but i watch it again today and i found myself becoming engrossed in the movie all over again.

a very good war film with solid story and a quality production that puts you there in a pow camp and in the jungles of the pacific. i live not far from where the film was made and i must say i didn't recognize it.

a must see for ww2 buffs who think they have seen it all, this has to be seen. being that it was a flop at the cinemas, many don't no of it or seen it in the video shop.but don't let that put you off seeing it because it flop. there are many reason's a movie flops. it should become a cult movie in the war genre because its that good.

speed with a vengeance!
19 March 2009
this very enjoyable action flick by renny harlin has opened in Australia with little fanfare. it a shame for it has all the ingeedance of a box office hit, good action, good plot, fast pace and a no brainer.

12 rounds moves at a hell of a pace which is great because if you think about it to long its just plain stupid.but it does, so you don't care well that is if you are a action junkie, and i guess you are or you would not be reading.

its good to see renny back on the big screen doing what he does best blowing stuff up.he made the better pirate movie in my option. so sit back relax put your mind in neutral and let the fun begin.

eaters of the dead!
28 June 2008
this movie just gets better every time i see it. good solid action adventure from start to finish. visually stunning and set designs that transport you back in time for 100 mins.

this is not a histronic epic but matinée popcorn b movie and i mean that in good way.a film like this is one you buy and every 6 months you can watch without any qualms. i have seen 13th warriors over 10 times so i know what I'm talking about.

viking movies are always good value but is one of the best.with only the vikings as a close second. apart from bantaras its a cast of unknowns that fill the viking cast which is good so that you only see vikings not some actor in fur.good move also to have the hordes as faceless enemy.

a stunning western an under rated classic
29 March 2008
truly one of the most beautiful western put to film. yes an it is because the Aussie landscape is truly stunning and the lighting on this movie is nexted to none. the score is rousing good fun that lets you no your watching a western.

now the cast was great with tom at his best as the tall man in the saddle and allen rickman again playing the villain with evil spitting venom. then you have the beautiful laura as the love interest.

last but not least simon wincer one of the most underrated directors in the business. OK not all his shows a great films but they all look great and professionally made. if you love westerns and you have not seen this movie your not a lover of fine westerns. its not the best western and its not that original but it is a stunning and underrated classic.

old hero,old habits,new style
28 February 2008
this is one hell of a movie an action movie for the gore-porn set. this leaves you floored, what a can i say that has not already been said yes this is very very extreame.100% action from go to blood soaked end.

sly has made the best rambo he could, and I'm glad he directed. people sometime forget that sly is quit a got film maker.he just doesn't make them for critiques.

the hash location, heat that you could neally feel made an impression on me as much as the action. solid action from start to finish just a shame we did get a little more depth in the story department, flesh out a few characters or something. so if you want a taste or whats to come is war films this is the benchmark that has been set. be warned war is hell and bullets kill.
