Don't Look Up (2021)

Truly Truly Awful
25 December 2021
This film will most certainly do well simply because of the cast alone and that probably is the most clever thing about it. It reminds me of Movie 43. Only at least Movie 43 always knows what it was. This film takes itself very very seriously and by doing so, it makes it a terrible hard to watch experience.

Going in I decided not to read any reviews or even watch the trailers - so I was pretty excited. I made it about half an hour in before I started to realise it was complete and utter trash. The dialogue is arranged like certain lines are meant to be funny but I can honestly say nothing whatsoever was even remotely amusing about this film. It was actually painful. The social/political messages behind practically every scene would've been fine if they were conveyed in even a remotely clever and engaging way.

Up until they first went into the Oval Office I was intrigued at where the film was going to go. But starting with that scene the film completely lost me. Pathetic, waste of time and just a real shame that the immense talent couldn't have don't something - ANYTHING - else. Even though I can't recommend watching this film, maybe you should watch it just to see if you can get something out of it.

Maybe this film is simply just for Americans. Seeing familiar faces from other films/ in music seems to appeal to them. Also they can relate to the complete stupidity on show here and find it amusing (familiar). I'm stunned at just what the people involved in making this film wanted to say and how they thought they could keep a audience interested for 2 and a half hours.

Fantastic

Unbelievably good episode. If you haven't seen it. Watch it. Performances. Concept. Even the camerawork was all excellent. When that prick first steps on the bridge the subtle shots between him and Data, stunning. Everything was superb and like normal the ending made me very happy.

Wow.

Warning: Spoilers
Honestly, that's my reaction to seeing how this episode is so poorly rated.

I thought the overall concept was absolutely brilliant. The acting is absolutely marvellous. The scene at around 36mins where Riva, Troi and Data discuss via sign language was genuinely fascinating. The way they were all subtly impressed with data learning sign language in like 10 minutes was nice. That ending as well, Picard thanking Troi was very heartwarming I can't lie. All in all this episode really impressed me and you've got to watch it.

Decent episode, meh ending
19 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this episode was pretty good and defo worth the watch but the ending was a little bit anticlimactic. Obviously the prime directive is important but I feel they could've done something a bit better than just denying to fix their ships.

Anyways, it was funny to have some friendly junkies on the shop and I thought the 70s drugs dealers were dislikable and scummy. Fun episode!

Damn good episode if you don't hate Wesley
19 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe it was because I was smoking weed while watching but i found this episode pretty brilliant. People clearly really hate Wesley but I've gotta say I really don't find him that annoying. Feel like everyone on ship doesn't want him around most of the time so its quite funny. Most of the time he genuinely knows something important but no one listens to him haha.

Anyway, the episode itself was really intriguing. Travelling the furthest and fastest anyones ever been, a conversation with some all-knowing alien who disappears from existence, and a few crazy hallucinations/reality shifting moments which were pretty trippy (btw watching this high on LSD for the first time would be a mental experience lol).

Maybe I'm just soft but I found the ending pretty great too. Wesley gets promoted to the bridge and you just feel like it's a big deal. It's not like I REALLY wanted him hanging around the bridge but it's a sweet moment. Every kids dream tbf.

Damn good episode. Give it a watch.

Halloween (I) (2018)

Very Very Impressive
11 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So this film has obviously been out for a while now and I was aware of it back when it originally came out but the rating on here kind of talked me out of watching it.

Terrible mistake on my part! This film is excellent.

I'm really glad I decided to watch this because wow what a fun chilling horror film. The original Halloween is a very special film for a lot of reasons. It's a classic, low budget, simple, very effective horror film made by a director with a great understanding of creating cinematic tension. In a lot of ways, this sequel is the exact same. It's very straightforward in a lot of ways. As it should be.

Michael is back. He will kill everyone who can't escape him.

Something that really impressed me was just how much I cared for the expendable characters. I mean, I knew going in that I shouldn't get attached to anyone because they'll most likely be dead within 5 minutes of them being on screen. Still, I found myself caring for the background characters more, definitely than Laurie because I knew she would be in the sequel. Damnit.

However, Michaels very first kill sets the stage that's there's nothing off limits in this film and anyone could be next. Apart from Laurie I genuinely felt bad for the compassionless way Michael killed innocent people. That babysitter and that poor horny guy who gets impaled on a gate were more deeply written characters than I ever expected and all the actors did very well in creating believable chemistry together.

The camera work in this film was perfect too. You can tell the director understood the assignment when it came to replicating the work Carpenter did in the original. Some of the tension created in this film is undeniably awesome. That one single frame kill, where it starts with Michael's reflection in the window followed by watching him walk around to the back of the house and stab the woman inside. Simply exquisite and exactly what I wanted to see (yikes).

From my experience, SO many terrible run of the mill cash grab horror movies get released every year and I expected this film to be just that - but I was wrong. This film was made with a lot of care and consideration to the original and I really respect it in a lot of ways. The sequel to this film Halloween Kills is just about to be released and I'm defo watching that. Ignore the rating (currently 6.5 wtf) and watch this film.

THE MILCHMAN
9 October 2021
I'll be honest, this is one of my favourite comedies ever. This film is very special to me and it's one of those films I'll remember forever. Me and my Grandad watched it all the time whenever I visited. It will always remind me of happy times when life was simple. Feel like some people on here are a bit harsh tho, it's not as bad as the users rating suggests. That said it is classic British comedy and it doesn't appeal to everyone. If you don't know anything about the Carry On films then I'd recommend this one as a place to start. Check out Carry on Cabby if you enjoy it, that's another classic.

Good episode. Shoddy logic.
9 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I think this episode is pretty good overall. The concept is very interesting and dramatic, but poorly executed. Everyone suddenly acts like a complete idiot just for the sake of the story.

Ahsoka is set up for the murder of a prisoner in the most bizarre way imaginable. She supposedly force chokes a woman while she is completely alone in a cell and is then immediately arrested. How stupid would she have to be to murder someone alone in a cell with the guards right outside the door? I guess it's not possible to use THE FORCE to choke someone unless you're in the room with them...

Also, at this point Ahsoka is literally a massive war hero. She's been on countless missions and literally just saved Anakin's life. She was personally chosen to investigate because she wasn't around when the temple was attacked in the last episode. Of all the Jedi to frame, not sure Ahsoka was the right one to go with chief. She ofc then does the worst possible thing and tries to escape when realistically they had nothing on her if she just chilled in the cell. Yoda, Mace and the other Jedi would defo believe she didn't do anything wrong. I mean they were literally in the room when Ahsoka got told by Tarkin that the suspect wanted to talk to her... Alone. Why would the suspect ask to speak with supposedly the one person who would want to kill her?

DOESN'T MATTER ITS THE PERFECT FRAME JOB EVER

Overall, the episodes still fun and I'm probably just picking holes but you've gotta question the logic a bit. I feel like the writers could've come up with a better way that made Ahsoka look more guilty instead of making it THIS obvs she was innocent.

BOY!
12 July 2021
Amazing game from start to finish. I genuinely don't know how to describe how much fun I had playing this game. Not only is the gameplay really satisfying, the story is one of the best written and directed I think I've ever played in a video game. The voice acting is out of this world, every character seems so believable and suitable for their character. The actors work really well together and their interactions are so interesting and compelling. When I saw the trailer for this game I never even considered buying it, but someone recommended it to me and I'm so glad I listened! If you like sorry led games next to awesome moments, do yourself a favour and play this masterpiece of a video game. Can't wait for the next GOW.

A Complete Joke
29 July 2019
What is the point of having characters who survive no matter what? Even when they've already been killed several times. More so than the other, this episode is completely absent of any tension at all and you don't doubt for a second that all the characters will be perfectly fine despite the terrible situation they're in. This is entirely what the show has become at this point. Some characters are given decent scenes (riddler) while most are awfully written. I genuinely hate Barbara and Tabitha's characters and have been hoping they'd be cut ages ago but it's become a running joke now that they're both somehow still alive. When your characters escape impossible situations every episode it become hard to care and no one seems to die at all in this show, even when they do ffs. The writers for this show must be some pretty stupidest and uninspired people who can't be asked to write a better script that actually makes sense and doesn't have you cringing ever 2 minutes. Such a shame when you consider what could have been.

Embarrassing
17 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is cringey to watch and the ending is just bizarre. Within the space of about a minute, Gordon swears that he won't kill someone and then puts two shots in the guys chest. Absolutely unbelieveable. Was one shot not enough, in the leg? The James Gordon in this show is a crazed psychopath and ruins the character completely. How can he ever aspire to be the honourable Commissioner Gordon? Also Les Thompkin's is an annoyingly stupid character who throughout the entire series has trusted Gordon with her life and then for the sake of the plot just decideds that Gordon is insane and that he needs help. Honestly, one of the most awful episodes imaginable, nothing makes sense and the fact that they didn't straight up murder Nygma for what he did earlier is just nonsensical from the characters perspective.

This isn't just a beautifully crafted gangster film. Or an outstanding family portrait, for that matter. An amazing period piece. A character study. A lesson in filmmaking and an inspiration to generations of actors, directors, screenwriters and producers. For me, this is more: this is the definite film.

Good Fun
21 May 2018
After watching this film with the boys, I've gotta say it was pretty fun. Although the film probably isn't as good as the first Deadpool, I still think it was a good time and had some pretty funny moments. The plot was kinda crazy and there wasn't as many jokes as I expected but all the same, it was cool to see the characters again and the comedic wit of Ryan Reynolds. A pretty enjoyable film and cinema experience!

Just. Amazing.
29 April 2018
This one only gets better with each viewing. Leone's masterful storytelling and Morricone's crazy, beautiful, epic soundtrack; desperate, haunted faces that look like the barren landscapes the story is set in and a plot that unfolds with impeccable pacing to culminate in THE ultimate western finale. As in Leone's previous films, music isn't just used to add to the atmosphere but is essential to the story, or perhaps even more: Morricone's main musical theme plays the actual role of a (or rather: the) protagonist in the film. Anyone who thought that the so called "Spaghetti Westerns" were nothing but cheap, violent B-movies had to reconsider after seeing this film. It doesn't get any better than this: this is movie history; iconic, classic, unforgettable, epic - for this film, I just run out of words.

Look For The...
29 April 2018
There aren't many animated Disney films I don't like; actually, I think every single one of them until the end of the seventies was amazing. But for me, this is the one that stands out. Wolfgang Reitherman has directed some of the studio's best - but here he has created his masterpiece. It has fantastic animation, fantastic characters - and what a killer soundtrack! This film will stay with me forever, and I'm so happy it was created.

We'll Meet Again...
29 April 2018
I never really bought into the Kubrick hype. I mean: don't get me wrong; I like all of his films very much - but to me, they all feel somewhat "over-constructed" and lack a natural flow. And then I finally got to see 'Dr. Strangelove'. Wow. What a terrific, pitch black satire. This film is so wild and mean and funny - and Peter Sellers gives THE performance of his career. Unlike in any of Kubrick's later works, there's a sense of playfulness here that gives the whole movie a crazy kind of energy; I'm guessing that Seller's love for improvisation forced Kubrick to ditch his usual perfectionism to a certain degree (and the film is all the better for it). Sharp, outrageously entertaining comedy/satire by one of the most revered directors of the past century.

Lovely Film
29 April 2018
Warning: this beautifully animated tale is highly addictive! As soon as it's over you'll immediately want to watch it again. So much fun, never cheesy and for pure entertainment value quite simply the best animated film since 1967's 'The Jungle Book' (well, at least in my humble opinion). No surprise, given that co-director Chris Sanders has had a hand in every good Disney film starting with Aladdin until he left the mouse house in 2006 (and I suspect John Lasseter now regrets letting him go). And as much as I adore and admire pretty much every Pixar film, for this once, Dreamworks just had the movie with the higher 're-watchability factor' which makes it one of my favourites. See it!

The More You Watch, The Better It Gets
29 April 2018
Would it be too much to say Tarantino re-invented the cinema with this film? I can only speak for myself, but I had never seen anything as cleverly constructed, well written and electrifying as this milestone. You can tell - especially in gangster films - they never looked quite the same after 'Pulp Fiction'. Probably the most influential film of the last 20 years, it's got simply everything: amazing performances (especially Sam Jackson); it features some of the most quotable dialogue ever written; it has arguably one of the best non-original soundtracks ever - it's such a crazy, cool, fun ride that you feel stoned/dizzy/drunk after watching it eachtime. Despite originally thinking it was slightly overhyped, seeing it again and again has brought me to realise what it is. It's 'Pulp Fiction' and it's amazing.

Very Funny Film
29 April 2018
Personally, I think this is one of the most intelligent comedies ever made. Sure, it does have its share of simple slapstick and naughty moments, but generally, the topics the Pythons tackle here are very serious - albeit dealt with in a way that makes this a true contender for the funniest film of all time. A firework of hilarious sketches, timeless quotes and clever comments on the human condition, this film was deemed too dangerous for the masses and therefore, until recently, banned in several countries. This film never once makes fun of Jesus (Christ) - but it DOES take the mickey out of blind, fanatic followers of any political movement or religion. An outstanding achievement and endlessly re-watchable.

God Will Be Cut
29 April 2018
Having seen some of Tarantino's previous films, when I first watched this, my expectations for 'Kill Bill' were already over the roof. However, regardless of my high hopes for quality entertainment, I was not prepared for this film. I was dumbfounded. I was blown away. I had quite simply never seen anything even remotely like it. In 'Kill Bill', the revenge plot serves only as a larger story arc, thus allowing Tarantino to play with as many different genres as he likes. With complete disregard for the conventions of filmmaking, he paints an expressionistic masterpiece in his own unique style, the likes of which the world has never seen before. This picture is a gift to the film industry and the world itself!

A feast for the eyes. Dark and uncompromising. With a haunting musical score by Vangelis that adds a hypnotic quality to those breathtaking landscapes of a mega-city in a dystopian future. To me, Ridley Scott's visionary masterpiece represents the ultimate Science Fiction film (and the final cut is the version to watch).

A Statement of a Film
29 April 2018
Let's ignore the advice and talk about 'Fight Club'. This film was a milestone; although it bombed at the box office, Fincher's cinematic language left a mark that can still be felt now, 14 years later, on many current releases. The film has a raw energy that grips me every time I watch it. Whether it is a very clever satire or pure testosterone going on a rampage - both are fine by me. A film so visually stunning and sexy, with career best performances by all involved - welcome to movie heaven.

I'm a sucker for romantic comedies. This movie has as much charm as it has bite, thanks to a fantastic script and Murray's excellent performance. Never dull or cheesy, this wonderful fantasy tale just hits all the right notes, and if anyone knows a better rom-com, please name it. I've watched it countless times and, without a doubt, I will watch it again and again (or for as long as I keep waking up to that song by Sonny & Cher).

Violence Meets Satire
29 April 2018
In its satirical quality this is the worthy successor to 'Dr. Strangelove'. Probably the smartest film on fascism - and its appeal - ever made, yet cleverly disguised as a loud sci-fi extravaganza, this satire works well on every level. Over the top violence with an actual brain, this wickedly subversive gem is one I can't get enough of.
