The Prestige (2006)

Simply Awesome
12 April 2007
It has to be among the best movies made for quite some time. Christopher Nolan has again proved to be a gem. Christian Bale does his role with ease. All the characters just fit in so easy. Who ever thought that a story on eighteenth century magicians could be so interesting, involving and damn it, I have to agree it was deceptive, it does not fit in with the mind boggling sci-fi movie category but the script was so well written, that one cant just appreciate the movie if he does not get involved with it. The logic for a part of the ending can be conceived with many possible start points, but the beauty of this movie is, whatever be the start point and whatever be the path of your reasoning, you'll end up saying "wow" to the end. You might continue to debate on the nuances behind "how it could have happened", but you'll never debate on the quality of this gem. Congrats Mr. Nolan, "The Prestige" is the rightful successor to "Memento".

crappy
1 September 2006
I am amazed to see the rating for this movie on IMDb, it is very rare to see such ratings for a crappy movie like this on IMDb.

the plot is totally baseless, how did the snakes even manage their way into the flight, the story generates no interest, no horror and does not keep you guessing.

does the script writer even know, what happens if they shoot out windows on a plane when it is coasting at 10000 ft.

insane buggers, whoever made the movie, total waste of time, i am not saying that even movies should have a logic, but movies which don't base themselves on logic, are made for people who want to watch a nice laugh away movie, but this one, holy god, it is a drivel.

gripping movie, message well said

life of David gale, well on first hearing about this movie, i thought it would be a documentary of some gale.

well after i went through the relishing experience of sitting through this wonderful movie, i am all praise for this movie.

David gale is a prof at the university of Texas and is a an activist against the law of capital punishment. well then unfortunate events land the very same David gale on the electric chair, why?, who played the ploy? thats what the movie is about, no vulgar, very well directed awesome movie.

kate winslet and kevin spacey were amazing, fit their characters to perfection.

simply a classic
1 June 2006
Well, this ought to be among the best movies ever made. The full movie has been made in a court room with jurors all of whom have acted par excellence.

henry fonda delivers his best performance, the points were brought out subtly and the reactions displayed by each person was warranted for and seemed very realistic.

the direction is flawless and then the movie again proves the age old saying "dont believe what you see or hear, come to a decision only after deep introspection" Henry fonda who is the lone man against 11 others slowly wins the confidence of the rest to free the accused of guilt.

wonderful movie, must see.

one smart movie
7 April 2006
a very rare and nice piece of work this is, how often do you get to see movies which are so bold and show the real way in which the 3rd world is exploited.

The plus of this movie is that it is not a bland documentary, it is one real smart flick. A very silent and smart way of revealing things, one thing leading to the other

Rachel Weisz looks gorgeous and very good acting by most characters. If you guys love gosford park, u'll like this for sure.

give it a try, worth it entirely + for those dumb Oscar fans, yes it did win an Oscar.

sick and mentally disturbing
27 January 2006
frankly, i did not expect this from Tarantino. but anyway he is not the director, so i can forgive him.

the girls were the highlight of the movie, otherwise there was nothing much in it. i would not call it horror, nor a thriller. suspense, far away from that. if you call the reason for all the crap happening in the movie as the suspense, i would not buy that. and it was revealed in a pathetic way.

the saw series is a much better directed one, go and see that.

eli roth can go to hell, dooms day is nearby

overall very bad, gory and disturbing

excellent

great direction, great acting and what i call "MUSIC" illayaraja is god.

this movie had strong characters, very good direction and a great message told very effectively.

Kamal plays the son of a great singer (played well by gemini ganesan). He does not like to follow his family traditions blindly and becomes kind of a rebel within the family.

he has some ideas about how a society should be and shares the same with sita (his girl friend). he decides to inculcate some values in the people around him and make the place around him a better place to live in.

great movie, the songs rock thumbs up

excellent, but ending hmm
8 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I loved every scene of this movie, except for the last ones. I am still not able to cope up with the ending. I would loved to see both of them alive and giving a speech as to why these elements spring up into society.

Otherwise this movie is great, action is excellent and Naser has a substantial role which i lived. he is one of the best character artists in tamil movie industry.

no songs, thats a highlight worth mentioning, u don't get to see many like that.

at some points the movie is gore, but if u like intense movies, go for it.

Good, but too sober
8 November 2005
This movie is amazing example of great direction, acting and a definition of how a background score should be. Songs are out of the world. Kamal and Sridevi screen chemistry beats it all.

Sridevi plays a teenage girl who is affected by loss of memory and she falls a prey to some evil elements of the society and lands up as a tart. Kamal sees here there and decides to help her.

From there starts this poetic beauty. K.J Yesudas is God!!!!!! he gave probably his best voice ever (exempt Sindhu Bhairavi) in Moondram Pirai. People who want to see love and its emanation, please watch this. this is not a movie where people meet a couple of times and say "i love u".

i am not a big fan of romantic movies, but this one is too good (for one this is not a romantic movie, its a different class and genre)

Jigsaw is back with a bang

great, i am gaga over this movie, the plot is good and the suspense is ooomph. if you like saw, you'll adore this movie except for the characters, whom i felt could have been better.

but overall amazing experience and even more frightening than saw, if blood runs down fear waves over ur spine.

and can you believe it the whole movie was filmed in just 25 days, guys it is damn good.

awesome experience, i would actually like a saw 3(those who have seen the movie will know the reasons for it) anyway go and enjoy it.

Movies don't get better
4 October 2005
Christopher Nolan is God!!!!!!!!!. Hands Down this is the best suspense movie of the 90's. Mind you Nolan made Memento in 2000 and that even beats this. But oh my god, the movie is stunning and narration is excellent.

A writer has a very weird habit of following people, but frames rules for himself so that he does not get into trouble (as rules are meant to be broken), he gets into trouble.

Unlike Memento where the full story was told in the reverse, here the movie is told in 2 parts with consecutive scenes in each. So the viewer can relate what happens now to see what had happened before.

The last 30 Min's have some of the finest moments and the last scene which happens to be the start of the movie leaves you staggering.

the guy who wrote the script for the movie whoever it is "he is too good"

Shoot !!!, the twist took me apart
3 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I heard a lot about this movie and then decided to check this out. Well the initial parts of the movie were kind of boring and then for some time, i just could not understand what the heck is going on, but then it was a beauty.

the twist was the last thing i expected, oh my holy god, it took me apart. i am a great fan of movies with twists and this is right up there in my list.

apart from the twist, the move has its own moments and some scenes were entertaining.

good, really good.

Saw (2004)

very well crafted
1 October 2005
this movie deserves a special place amongst movies with great endings, some movies make it to the top after they pull of a fantastic ending, but in most cases 90% of the plot is a drivel, but this one, it manages to maintain the momentum all through. all the actors cast were unknown faces to me but they did a decent job.

the script is superb and oh my god, just when i thought the movie was dragging along a psychic ending, there it came, one of the best twists i have seen in a long time (well actually not very true, i just saw unbreakable recently).

camera effects are breathtaking, its awesome guys, just go and watch it. and take this from me, this movie does not have any supernatural horror, so guys who are hesitant to see horror movies, don't worry, if you like a good suspense, this is your movie.

go to hell
28 September 2005
Why do people have to drool over a movie that shows life in Bombay slums 20 years ago with a camera man going all round the place. The film is touching, screw you guys, every day in our life (say 10 years back) we came across slums like this and saw characters like that, how many times did you feel like stopping and thinking about life of such people. By all means the movie is a bore, I have seen hazaar art movies better than this one.

Now lets get to the movie, the movie is all about a small kid who comes from a village to make a living in Bombay and the movie highlights the ways in which he is exploited. Nana Patekar is as usual irksome, oh my god, I cant review this drivel any more.

for god sake, don't see this, and yes shows how stupid people at Oscars are to nominate this movie and thank god, this did not win one.

A Piece of Crap
25 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
A couple don't know how much they love each other until one of them goes on to erase the memory of the other, what a joke!!!!! Clever movie this is claimed to be, what is so clever about this drivel. the only nice thing is how the initial phases of the movie prove to be shifted parts later. the way the operation was performed on him and the 2 guys and the girl was so irritating. no one on earth would imagine tinkering around with the brain under such circumstances.

and damn it, the guy happens to be technician, not even a doc.

plot wise, the movie again sucks, no depth by any standards, so they fell in love, then break up shown in mixed phases. she erases him from her mind, he proceeds to do the same and in his mind she helps him open his eye and yes, there he is jim carey opening his eye when the operation is being performed. crap crap and crap just avoid this

The genre of action movies: REDEFINED
24 September 2005
Excellent, I am still wondering why this movie is not there in IMDb top 250. Gene hackman gave one of his best performances in this truly exciting crime drama.

The plot is like, a set of people from Marseilles, France use some people out in the US to smuggle goods into here. Detective, who is played by hackman and his friend trace this group and finally the movie has an excellent ending which gives rise to one of the best sequels ever made.

if you don't mind seeing a movie 30 years old, then go ahead and watch this.

Good, Really good
20 September 2005
I have no words to express the depth of this movie. I am not an American native and from whatever time I have spent in this country, This movie has all the elements to describe the lives of some here.

Though there are some flaws in the script, the movie has amazing vision and depth.

Kevin Spacey is excellent in his role.

I am not able to express much here, but the movie is what someone would show to people who don't know about a confused generation here.

the subtle issues in the world around have been magnified into a beautiful movie.

A must watch
18 September 2005
If you are a fan of mythological movies this is a must watch. Sivaji Ganesan plays Lord Shiva and plays it in a manner that people will remember it for years to come.

The story comprises of 4 parts and all 4 have different stories called as leelaigal. Each part teaches you something for life at the end. Songs are excellent though classical. Sivaji's acting in this movie is just too good.

The dharmi scene played by Nagesh is memorable and the dialogues in that part of the movie are a feast.

It is a nice Sunday afternoon movie.

Not Kubrick's best
18 September 2005
Guys, I am a big fan of Stanley Kubrick and I have seen all his movies so far except 'paths of glory'. Personally I feel Dr. Strangelove is a bit overrated. The movie has hardly 5-6 scenes were you can laugh or see through the sarcasm considering the fact that, that was the purpose of the movie.

Story wise, it is definitely innovative as expected of Kubrick but most of the movie is a let down.

Peter Sellers is impressive in all his 3 roles though ironically he played the role of Dr. Strangelove for the shortest duration among all 3.

Definitely worth a watch but by no means a classic.

This will be a classic any day
17 September 2005
What can i say about this movie. Even a kid in Tamil Nadu born today will know the speech that Sivaji Ganesan made in this movie.

Songs are extremely nice and sivaji is awesome in this movie.

What caused Veerapandiya Kattabomman to revolt may be shrouded in mystery. But revolt he did and paid the ultimate price of giving up his life. who better than Sivaji Ganesan to etch out this role. I suspect the real V. Kattabomman would not have been half as magnificent but he did deserve the belated accolades bestowed upon him through Sivaji.

With its taut screenplay and powerful dialogues together with a spirited performance from Sivaji and the ensemble cast, no wonder the movie went on to become such a monster hit. Though dialogues of ParAsakthi, ManOhara, ThiruvilayAdal, ThillAna MohanAmbAL etc (incidentally all starring Sivaji) were extremely popular with people, I don't think any movie dialogue had the reach of VBKB - Jackson Durai conversation. You can still see 5 year old kids performing the scene in KaNmaNi PoongA kind of programmes, even after 40 years.

Did Hitchcock Direct this crap
17 September 2005
I still can't believe it, the director if Rear Window, Vertigo, Psycho, The Lady Vanishes, SpellBound, Strangers on a Train directed a movie like Marnie. The movie is like a drivel. I just could not stand through this one. Even the movies Hitchcock made in the 1930's like the 39 steps, the man who knew too much are faster than this.

Tippi Hedren is so irksome in this movie, I just could not bear her and that pale sodden acting of Sean Connery, oh my god. There is no trademark of Hitchcock in this movie.

please avoid this if you are Hitchcock fan and avoid this all the more if you are beginning to see Hitchcock movies.

The movie speaks for itself
16 September 2005
Well, the movie might belong to the genre of silent movies, but the movie speaks for itself. Instant Classic, Amazing direction truly flawless acting make this a memorable experience.

Kamal has shown in this movie, what skill set someone requires to reach high standards. The movie has comedy, nice drama and an exceptional ending to wind it all.

This movie was rightly honored by the Cannes Jury in 1988 and I would say it deserves much more. It can be appreciated by everyone. If you are not an Indian maybe you will take 20-25 Min's to start appreciating the movie, but take my words, after that you'll love it.

It is a redefining piece of work in Indian Cinema. A silent movie itself has its own charm, but this one is a silent movie with a great story and a marvelous crew to support that. This is more than perfect.

too slow and predictable
14 September 2005
The plot is OK, but the movie is too slow and the there is a lot of drift. The message should have been stronger. With a plot like this, an amazing crew could have been put to better effect.

if there is a lot of scum around bickie why does he find pleasure sitting in porno movies at nights (he even took the girl he was seeing there). he might have his opinions about the society, but going to a theater to watch porn is no way to clean that up.

otherwise the movie is OK, talks about the how someone gets vexed with the dirt the society around him has. he sees how politicians swindle votes and promise anything needed to win and don't care for the public after that.

but way too over rated.

stop calling it a remake
12 September 2005
now, lets get this straight, godfather was a bad adaptation of the novel and that becomes one of the all time best movies. if manirathnam makes a movie out of the real life story of velunayagam mudaliar then it is called a remake of godfather, what crappy logic is this.

In all aspects the movie is perfect, acting by kamal, direction is amazing and mind blowing music by the maestro Illayaraja.

set in the slums of bombay, it shows the life of velu who becomes a local don just like it happened in the true life of velunayagam mudaliar. the dialogues are memorable and the dialogue between kamal and his grandson is something that i can never forget.

watch it rightaway and stop this crap about it being a remake of godfather. Hollywood has made 100's of movies better than godfather, but nayagan is by and far among the 5 best movies ever made in India.

a movie of true class
11 September 2005
i have not seen movies which depict feelings among people of different races and various attitudes of people in a better way. the movie is a class apart. Gregory Peck has acted very well and the 2 kids too did their job perfectly.

How often do you see such critical issues in a society handled in such a deft manner and how a father wants his kids to never think low of anyone. Atticuc the lawyer wants his kids to have equal respect for all humans and he is a very good example.

The evils in the society that existed at that time and the surface cover in the lives of people form the outline and all these are seen through the life of atticus who is a leading lawyer.

brilliant movie.
