Dr. David Gale, an advocate of eliminating the death penalty, is accused of rape and murder. Once convicted, he ends up on death row in Texas himself, telling his story to a reporter through a series of flashbacks.

The diner scene on the morning after Bloom and Stemmons arrive in Texas was originally shot at a different diner. During the original shooting, they were hit by a tornado and the cast and crew had to huddle together in the kitchen until the tornado passed overhead.

Continuity:
When Zack and Bitsey are re-creating Constance's death, you can clearly see Zack bump the tripod-mounted camera as he moves. But in the next shot, the view on the monitor is the same. Such a jolt would have severely changed the composition of the shot.
