The Fall Guy (2024)
Just wow!!! A must watch Action Rom-Com
Watching this epic in theatre was one of the best decisions I've made in recent times. Everything about this film seemed perfect. Be it chemistry between the leads, the soundtrack or the thrill, David Leitch hits the spot every time just like he did with The Bullet Train.
Gosling playing a stunt man who comes back from an early retirement in order to save the directorial debut film of the love of his life (Emily Blunt). But this is not it as things get complicated once he lands in Australia.
One thing that I specifically liked about this action thriller was the movie references bought up during the regular conversation between Gosling & Winston Duke. Every movie buff would love it for sure.
Not to mention how good Emily blunt looks in this 120 mins of pure entertainer. A perfect onscreen match for Gosling.
Final verdict: A blockbuster.
Maidaan (2023)
A perfect mixture of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Chak De India!!!
India and Football, a highly unlikely pair in recent times. But it was not always like this.
Maidaan is the biopic of Syed Abdul Rahim who coached the Indian Football Team during 1950-62 which is considered as the golden era of Indian football.
Actually this is the first time I've seen a sports film that has given so much importance to the technicality of the game. Even the formation and team selection is well justified in the movie which is a delight for every football lover. Best thing about Maidaan is the amount of game time they have shown that is perfect for a sports drama. That's the reason you won't realize the duration of this film i.e., 3 hrs. It also showcases how politics and regionalism can ruin a sports for a country.
A must watch in every aspect.
PS: This Ajay Devgn epic took five years in making by the director Amit Sharma, well known for Badhai Ho.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Mckenna Grace Shines in this dull sequel
Much is expected from a film that has Paul Rudd in its cast. Also, Ghostbuster a horror-comedy franchise since 1984 has many great name attached to it including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd & Sigourney Weaver.
Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhand, the grandkids of the great Dr. Egon Spengler unite with Gary Grooberson (Rudd) to save earth from an ancient evil that is unleashed in NYC. They join forces with the founding member of Ghostbusters as Murray, Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson are all assembled in this old and new crossover.
Grace shows why she's regarded as one of the brightest child actresses of her generation with an impactful performance. Though I believe Paul Rudd could've done better if he had more screen time.
Nanjiani, the most recent member of the cast impresses with his humorous one-liners.
All along, not that great but watchable film.
Jerry & Marge Go Large (2022)
A Must watch, Period
A senior citizen who's good with numbers and has nothing else to do after retirement finds a loophole in a lottery system and makes millions in doing so. Who else can play this role better than the one and only Bryan Cranston.
Based on an incredible true story of Jerry and Marge Selbee, a long-married couple along with the whole town make millions out of a lottery system and in doing so they revive their town. And believe it or not, everything they did was legal.
Cranston and Annette Bening are the one playing Jerry & Marge which seems the perfect match. The chemistry that you expect from a couple who've been together for so long can be seen clearly the way both have played their part.
Be it comedy, romance, thrill or emotional touch, this 90 mins. Drama has it all.
Scoop (2024)
BBC crash-landing the Duke of York
Scoops is basically the backstory behind the infamous interview of Prince Andrew (Queen's favorite child) with BBC in 2019 that shook the Royal family.
Starring Rufus Sewell, Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper & Ramola Garai, the drama focuses on journalist Sam McAlister's quest to land the big interview with Prince Andrew, showing the complicated relationships between the media, Buckingham Palace, and the royal family. It explores the drama behind the scenes and the serious implications of Prince Andrew's connections to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
This disastrous interview with BBC's Newsnight led to Duke of York stepping down from his royal duties.
Casting seems spot on with Gillian Anderson & Billie Piper nailing their roles of BBC's journalist Emily Maitlis & Sam McAlister respectively. Sewell portraying The Duke is also spot-on with the interview resembling the actual one.
One won't find this a thriller though if you have followed this story five years back, but still it showcases the challenges in journalism and how high are the stakes when Royal family is involved.
The River Wild (1994)
Meryl Streep rafts for her family's life
Starring Streep, Bacon, Strathairn & John C. Reilly, this movie had epic written all over it.
Gail (Streep) a history teacher for those who have impaired hearing, is a former rafting instructor who goes on a rafting trip down the Salmon river with her husband & son. This epic family vacation turns into a nightmare when their trip is highjacked by two fugitives who plan to cross the country border via this violent river.
Bacon, the mastermind knows Gail's their only hope of escaping & she's left with no choice but to help them in order to protect her family.
It's Streep's resilience vs Bacon's vileness with two great actors (one surely the greatest ever) locking horns in a 110 mins of nail biting drama.
Dick (1999)
Epic Watergate Parody
After you've watched this parody that is so good, you'll definitely want this to be the true story behind the infamous watergate scandal.
Starring Kirsten Dunst & Michelle Williiams, two dumb high school girls who during their white house tour accidentally get to meet Nixon & in no time become regular visitors in the white house. Interestingly during these visits they are exposed to the covering of ongoing watergate scandal.
Dan Hedeya, is too hilarious as Nixon & to be honest he completely nails it. But Dunst & Williams are the ones to watch in this 90 mins of nonsense comedy. And guess what!!! It has Will Ferrel too.
Guaranteed funny.
Snack Shack (2024)
A great summer watch
A coming-of-age comedy of two inseparable teenager who desperately want to make something out of their summer vacation of '91.
A. J. And Moose, are two best friends and like every other teen movie, not popular in school. In order to avoid some boring job that their parents would impose on them during summer vacation, they rent out a shack in the community swimming pool which quickly becomes the hot spot among the locals.
Filled with great moments, this 110 mins. Heartfelt drama is a fun ride that has adventure, comedy, romance and brotherhood.
The chemistry between A. J. & Moose is too good that has to go through the test of time by the arrival of Brooke, A. J.'s hot neighbor who's also working in the pool as a lifeguard.
A perfect watch for upcoming summer.
Madgaon Express (2024)
Terrific bachelor's comedy after a long time
Kunal Khemu directorial debut stars Divyendu, Pratik Gandhi & Avinash Tiwary, three childhood friends completing their long pending bucket list by planning a vacation in Goa is more common theme than Cillian Murphy in a Nolan film. This film is about that trip going wrong.
Madgaon Express belongs to a genre that has become very rare these days i.e., Chaotic bachelor's comedy and Kemu perfectly hits the bulls eye in his first attempt. With underrated stars, decent tracks and glamour of Fatehi, this film will keep you glued to your seats for entire 140 mins. Especially Divyendu and Pratik have totally justified their casting by giving exceptional performance
And not to mention the 'Not Funny' track, will inevitably get stuck in your head.
Surely a must watch with buddies!!!
He Said, She Said (1991)
A Newsroom Rom-com that is equally funny and emotional
Kevin Bacon in a Rom-Com, doesn't sounds well. Though he started his career with Footloose kind of movie but he established himself with the likes of Mystic River, Apollo 13 & X-Men: First Class.
He said, She Said is entirely different from all those. It's a love-hate relationship between Bacon and Elizabeth Perkins who are colleagues cum competitor working for a newspaper. Bacon a womanizer and Perkins a simple lady looking for commitment have completely opposite characteristics. But as they say, opposite attracts and they develop feelings for one another. And the rest is complicated but funny.
One thing that I found different about this film was how they recall some major events in their relationship from the different perspectives of Bacon and Perkins which is quite amusing.
All along a nice romance drama!!!
Secret Admirer (1985)
Quite a funny mix-up that is too good to miss
I'll be frank, I wasn't expecting much from this comedy with only one known name in cast and that too Kelly Preston (no offence though, but she was known for her beauty, not her acting).
But to my surprise, this 90 min. Drama was one of the funniest movies that I watched in recent times. A love-letter to a guy from his secret lover bringing chaos into the life of multiple people is epic funny.
Fred ward playing Preston's dad was too damn hilarious and will give you jitters every time he's on screen.
I won't give much of the script but take my word, this teenage comedy will make your day. Do add this in your watchlist!!!
Dream Scenario (2023)
Ending not as good as the build up
Much was expected from this Nick Cage high-concept dark comedy. Concept was good, build up was nice, casting seemed fine, but the ending didn't justify the hype.
The whole movie revolves around a guy coming in the dreams of multiple people and doing nothing except just being there. None other than Nick Cage, a boring middle-aged professor wanting to be writer is the guy coming in the dreams of his family members, peers, students and even strangers.
Though the concept sounds very interesting, but things get chaotic as these dreams starts affecting the personal life of people having them and also Nick Cage's.
Written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, this black comedy is purely driven by the class act of Cage. Though it feels sort of weird to watch him grow so old but this guy still knowns how to attract the audience.
The Zone of Interest (2023)
Unlike anything before
What comes in mind after hearing Auschwitz? You would say concentration camps, Extermination centers, genocide, starved Jews getting tortured and many more such references. But one can just not think of Rudolf Höss, The commandant of Auschwitz and his wife Hedwig seemingly living their dream in a house build next to the camp where all those atrocities were taking place.
This Jonathan Glazer's film is one of a kind movie in which you'll only hear the references of holocaust in background noises that reverberates in your head for hours after the movie. The way in which the commandant family is shown living their normal life when human being are being burnt alive just feet away will surely give you chills.
Sandra Hüller gives yet another thrilling performance after Anatomy of a Fall (also nominated for Oscars). Playing the commandant's wife Hedwig she portrays a cold and ruthless lady so consumed in her own world that she's completely ignorant towards the noises and smoke from the furnaces of these extermination camps.
This Glazer's epic deserves recognition and it's about time the Oscars reward one of, if not the most, audacious films of the year.
Laapataa Ladies (2023)
Kiran Rao delivers a gem of a film!!!
Laapata Ladies is a sort of film that is very rare these days. A satire that is an eye-opener for the audience and needs everyone's attention. With unknown cast, limited budget and great script, it's a movie for all age-groups, every gender and is bound to go a long way.
This Kiran Rao's tragicomedy of two brides in rural India who accidentally get swapped during a train journey while returning from their wedding. Their misadventures after this strange event will make you laugh and the same time think about the social taboos a women has to go through in our society.
Ravi Kishan playing the cop investigating this case is a delightful to watch. Very subtly and hilariously he gives movie the much needed comic side that perfectly balances the emotional cause for which the movie was made. Probably one of his best performance till date.
Newcomers Sparsh Shrivastava (Deepak), Nitanshi Goel (Phool) & Pratibha Ranta (Jaya), they all justified their casting by giving some of the memorable performances. Hats off to all of them.
Next Goal Wins (2023)
A nice comedy depicting an Inspirational journey
Despite being a soccer lover, I wasn't aware that a national team lost 31-0 in a WC qualifier, unbelievable but true. This Taika Waititi's parody is based on the aftermath of this event.
American Samoa, is a permanent territory of USA in south pacific with a population of less than 50K. Yet they tried qualifying for 2002 FIFA WC in which they terribly failed. This inspiring movie is the post math of this event and is really fun to watch.
Starring Michael Fassbender as the coach of this doomed team, Waititi has assembled quite awesome comic characters who'll make your day by their funny accent and one-liners. Especially the guy playing Samoa Football federation chief Tavita, who has dreamed of the team scoring "one goal, just one" will win your heart.
Rest assured, you won't regret this movie taking 100 mins of your precious time.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
A truly magnificent cinematic experience that is meant for IMAX
With this second installment of Dune trilogy, Denis Villeneuve has surely made it clear that he's on the same level as his long term friend Nolan. With the likes of Incendies, Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 already in his bag, this epic trilogy inspire from Frank Herbert's science fiction saga has made Villeneuve one of the most creative and interesting filmmaker of 21st century.
Dune: Part 2 picks up from where the first one ended where Atreides house suffered betrayal from the Emperor himself and got annihilated from Arrakis by the evil forces of Harkonnen led by Baron Vladmir (Stellan Skarsgård). Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) unites with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen army led by Stilgar (Bardem) while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.
This parts focusses on the ways of Fremans and their obsession with the legend of Lisan-al-Gaib. Javier Bardem's portrayal of Stilgar, a Freman blinded by his faith is one of highlights of this epic. Chalamet too shines as Paul Atreides who's trying to live up to the expectations of prophesy. Austin Butler and Florence Pugh are fresh entry to this star studded franchise.
As expected, you are up for a worth remembering cinematic experience with nothing but perfect visuals and soundtrack. Hans Zimmer had to break his long term collaboration with Nolan in TENNET so that he could be a part of the film adaptation of his favorite childhood science fiction novel. He surely justifies his commitment by giving some breathtaking scores.
All along a must watch in IMAX screen!!!
Dune (2021)
And the Saga Begins!!!
Herbert criticized Dune (1984) director, David Lynch, for not following the book closely enough and for deviating from the original vision. How pleased he would be to see his beloved novel getting the proper tribute it deserves through this reboot by Denis Villeneuve. It's an immersive visual masterpiece with phenomenal cast and strong background score by none other than Zimmer.
With the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem in the cast, Villeneuve has left no stones unturned to make this one of the greatest franchise in coming years.
It's a battle of Arrakis AKA Dune to take control over the Spice Production, the most essential and valuable commodity in the universe because it makes safe and accurate interstellar travel possible. With Harkonnen recently stripped of their command of Arrakis by the emperor, noble house of Atreides are called to bring peace with the rebellion lead by the Fremans (Arrakis locals) who resent the misuse of their spice which is holy to them and are awaiting the arrival of their messiah who would turn their Dune into a paradise. Any further details will surely spoil this epic for you.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
My personal Favorite of All Time
I cannot count the no. Of times I've watched this epic. For every cast/crew involved in this, it's probably their best piece of work. Released in 1994, a year which gave us Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Lion King & Speed (Hum Aapke Hain Kaun & Andaaz Apna Apna. Any other year it would have grabbed every Academy award possible, but Tarantino had to settle for only one i.e., Best Original Screenplay.
Probably one of the best display of non-linear screenplay, this film revolves around eight characters Pumpkin (Roth), Honey Bunny, Jules (L. Jackson), Vincent (Travolta), Mia (Thurman), Butch (Willis) and Marsellus Wallace (Rhames). Not to mention some of the great cameos from Keitel (The Wolf), Walken (Captain Koons) and Tantino himself as Jimmie. Even if you aren't familiar with any of this name, still this chaotic comedy is worth everyone's time.
Tarantino's great taste of music is clearly evident with some fine soundtracks suiting the scenarios will blow you mind.
GOAT!!!
An Action Hero (2022)
Jaideep Ahlawat vs Ayushmann Khurrana, what a treat to watch
This is what that separates Ayushmann Khurrana from other actors. Every now and then he comes out of his comfort zone and gives us a movie that is completely contrasting to his regular work. Be it Article 15 or An Action Hero, they're poles apart from his social taboo based films.
An Action Hero is a kind of film that is needed every once in a while just to chill out and enjoy the popcorn. It's a unique action packed comedy film with some fine examples of the great performance in recent times.
Bhoora Solanki goes far beyond normal to take revenge from a Bollywood Superstar Maanav, whose life take a drastic turn when he gets caught up in an unforeseen event.
Background score too sync with the storyline and makes the movie experience intense.
Wanna try something different, go for this!!!
Bhakshak (2024)
A movie of great magnitude that needs serious attention
A female journalist uncovers the syndicate involved in the child abuse going on in a small orphanage located somewhere in Bihar. Sounds like Spotlight (2015), but on a serious note it's way more than that.
Bhumi Pednekar or I should say Anshuman Khurana of female actresses gives a riveting performance in this film filled with too many critically acclaimed figures. Needless to say Sanjay Mishra & Aditya Srivastav aka Abhijeet from CID are equally responsible in making this film an intense crime thriller with lots of thought provoking instances.
Never heard of the director though. Pulkit has hit the bulls eye with this project & will surely have me in queue for his next.
PS: Tagged by Netflix "Spotlight meets Khakkee", I would rather say "Spotlight with Wasseypur cast".
Fighter (2024)
Don't expect Top Gun and you won't be disappointed
Can't remember the last time I watched a Bollywood movie that focused solely on Indian Air Force. This Siddharth Anand's film surely falls in that category.
India's best combat aviators join forces to form Air Dragons at Srinagar Airbase in attempt to deny their notorious neighbor Pakistan who along with a terrorist group are planning yet another attack on Indian military bases.
Visual effects in this movie are above Bollywood standards with scenes of Sukhoi and Dhruv flying are treat to watch.
Casting team too did their part as one cannot think of anyone better than Hrithik and Deepika leading a pack of Aviators.
Surely a must watch that too in theater.
Lone Star (1996)
Liked the screenplay of this fine Texas crime thriller
Cris Cooper (Sam), a Rio county sheriff is investigating a case of few decades old skeleton found in the towns border. As the investigation goes on Sam unravels many hidden truth regarding his father Late Buddy Deeds who was a Rio Town legend and the former sheriff Charlie Wade who was popular for his misdoing during his tenure and went missing 40 years ago.
This film also emphasizes on the treatment of immigrants from Mexico in Texas region during that time.
Surprisingly, you'll find McConaughey who plays Buddy Deeds in supporting role with limited screen time and Cris Cooper in lead role which he perfectly masters.
Neru (2023)
A must watch courtroom drama
Much is expected when Jeethu Joseph collaborates with Mohanhal. Why shouldn't we? Together they have given us the Drishyam saga. Expectations met as this courtroom drama falls in the similar category.
Mohanlal portraying a long forgotten Lawyer Vijaymohan takes a strange case involving harassment of a blind girl named Sara by the notorious son of an influential personality. He's up against a top notch defense advocate Rajasekharan and his daughter Poornima (Priyamani).
Prosecution has nothing against the defendant except for a sculpture of the culprit made by the victim herself. It's this theme that separates this drama from the rest. The persistence of the victim to seek justice shown in this film is really an emotional roller-coaster.
Needless to say that Mohanlal is the center of this film and delivers a great performance with very well written dialogues.
A not to be missed film.
Flash of Genius (2008)
Best display of David and Goliath
Who would have believed that a simple windshield wiper installed in every car cost Ford motors around $400m!!!
Flash of Genius is an inspiring true story of a college professor named Robert Kearns, creator of intermittent wiper system in 1950s that would go on to be installed in millions upon millions of vehicles over the years. The patent for the same were stolen by Ford Motors that forced Kearns to file a lawsuit against the automobile giants. The dedication of Kearns (played by Greg Kinnear) despite every law firm declining to take his case and the long courtroom battle destroying his personal life resulted in one of the biggest settlements in the history.
This film perfectly displays how the 12 year's long battle for justice was not just about money.
A must watch in every sense.
96 (2018)
Liked Before Trilogy! Then you gotta watch this...
You never can get enough of Vijay Sethupathi, that's for sure!!! If versatile was a person, Sethupathi will be that Guy. Be it a cop or smuggler, protagonist or antagonist, love story or crime mystery, he has mastered everything.
In '96', he's playing Ramachandran, a photographer who meets his long separated childhood love Janaki (Trisha Krishnan) at a high school reunion. Tragicomic is the word that justifies their story who are so meant for each other but the circumstances didn't allow them to be together. Even after 22 years the spark is there. You'll find the conversation between Vijay & Trisha discussing about their past and missed chances so touching that one will truly feel for them.
The screenplay of this film with past and present running simultaneously one after another is too perfect and makes the story so gripping and interesting that you'll be glued to your seats.
All along an extraordinary love story !!!
