Below be me bio...enter at yer own peril....[evil2]ye have been warned!!....[evil4]
Just kidding! [wink]And yes..I have watched Pirates too much!
Hi and welcome to my biography. [clap] On this page you will find out my favourite films, actors, actresess, books, games and all sorts of other things. Also there will be more about me and what my hobbies are and stuff like that. It's very long but I hope you will enjoy reading it and that you find it interesting. [smile]
My Website
First off about my newly created website. The Dwarven Lords. It's a forum where LOTR is discussed but also lots of other things like films, books, games etc. It was hard work seting it up but I think it was worth it. There are quite a few members now and most are from IMDB. Feel free to explore The Home Of The Dwarven Lords....and maybe even join![winkgrin] The address is above.
Here's a little bit about my favourite film.[jump1]
The Lord Of The Rings
My favourite character from The LOTR (can you tell who it is yet?) Gimli son of Gloin. He's just a grumpy dwarf with some brilliant battle moves who needs a bit of lovin'[love1] as a lot of people don't like the way he was portrayed in the movies [roll]. So my mission is to Defend the Dwarf as best I can ]. I think that The LOTR is the best film I have ever seen and I hope it will continue to be so for many more years. Star Wars really opened up the world of films to me but LOTR is the trilogy that carries that on. I am in total awe at what Peter Jackson and the rest of the cast and crew have made and I am very pleased that they proved everybody wrong who said they could never do it. Please note: I am not someone who goes round dressed like a Ringwraith or a Ranger, I do not have a shrine in the back garden where I sit and worship the films, I just really, really enjoy them and although it is a "modern" film and everyone has a problem when people like "modern" films - most seem to think you are just jumping on the band wagon because it's so popular - that is not the case with me. The LOTR does not rule my life but it does enhance it. I am proud to be able to call myself a Lord Of The Rings fan (or Ringnut) and be in the company of many great Ringnuts that are on the LOTR boards.
How I Came To IMDB[chatty]
Well it all started by accident
I had only recently discovered IMDB and I was looking at the LOTR ROTK page when I noticed that there was a message board and I saw a post along the lines of LOTR FANS GET A LIFE by some bozo called I Love Teletubbies or something. I read the post and I must admit I saw red.[flameangry] I saw red so much I signed up for IMDB (which my brother had previously tried to do but failed..must be my feminine touch![angel]). I then posted a message (but I cant remember what I said). Then I started a post of my own something along the lines of why people have a problem with LOTR fans (little did I know that was only the tip of the iceberg[frozen]). On that post jjlord replied and that was how I came to know him. A little bit later I came across lazycatbj and these two have been great friends and allies since! [cheers]Oh, by the way, you are reading the bio that won the Biography Contest. I won that and the person who designed that contest wasme!! [gum] I also won jjlord's Ringnu conetest! I am a Maiden Ringnut.
How I Started Watching Films[colorful]
I first started watching films at a very young age. The first films I remember watching were probably Laurel & Hardy films. I have never laughed so hard as when they danced in Way Out West. They are a joy to watch. I loved them then and they are firm favourites now. Also the very early Universal horror films - Frankenstein, Bride Of Frankenstein, Dracula etc. Although Frankenstein originally scared me, I now I have no fear of the "monster" just pity. The Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films I also very much enjoyed and I still do. The above made me appreciate older films and the main bulk of films I watch today are ones which were made in the 1930's and 1940's. I particularly like British films from the 1940's and 1950's as I think we made some of the best films of that period and we had and still have some of the finest actors. I like all genres, although I don't really enjoy science fiction with the exception of Star Wars.
Please note that none of the below lists are in any order unless stated.

Favourite Actor And Why[cool]
Well this is a difficult one. It's a tie between Cary Grant, James Stewart, Spencer Tracy, Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney. Cary Grant always played Cary Grant but let's face it, he did it very well, he made some of the best double-takes ever. So funny. James Stewert started out as the every-day American but progressed to tougher and more unlikely roles you wouldn't have thought he could do. He is really diverse and probably has more range than those I have mentioned. Humphrey Bogart played tough guys and slime balls to perfection. He then went to film noir with some of his most memorable performances. Then to Casablanca with his most-loved role. But for me he was at his best when not in one of his toughie roles. The African Queen was his best film, I think because it was so unexpected of him. Spencer Tracy, you could throw anything at him and he'd be brilliant. Give him the worst film and he'd hold it up single handed. The teaming of him and Katharine Hepburn is legendary. James Cagney only remembered for his gangster roles, but his best was in Yankee Doodle Dandy - you have to be really miserable not to be wowed by his magnificent dancing. Also he was excellent in little comdies like The Strawberry Blonde and he was brilliant as The Captian in Mister Roberts.
My Favourite Actress And Why[royal]
My favourite actress without a doubt is Katharine Hepburn. She is the closest you can get to perfection in an actress. I have yet to see her being awful in a film. She is just brilliant. One of her best films is Bringing Up Baby with Cary Grant. Any film starring those two is good but with Hepburns comic performance its excellent. It is one of the funniest films I have ever seen. I love all her films with Spencer Tracy whether it is comedy Adams Rib - or drama Guess Whos Coming To Dinner. They were perfect together and are a joy to watch. I also like her other films with Cary Grant such as Holiday as they made a great team. I love it when great stars are paired together and none are greater than Katharine and Humphrey Bogart. The African Queen is probably Humphreys best and Katharine has never been sharper. Another great pairing is in Rooster Cogburn where she gets to be witty to John Wayne. Not the best film on the planet but worth watching just to see them together. The film though with the most sarcastic, witty and basically stab-in-the-back remarks is The Lion In Winter with Peter OTool. There are so many retorts and snarls flying backwards and forwards its like watching a tennis match. I dont know what it is about Katharine Hepburn. Whether its just her acting or whether its her no-nonsense and Im-going-to-do-that-whether-Im-allowed-to-or-not attitude along with her strength and determination. I just think she is a rarity in acting. She is one of the few who really deserve the title of Legend.

Film Makers[angry3]
Steven Speilberg - one of the greatest directors ever and the greatest living one
Alfred Hitchcock - possibly the greatest ever British director (until he became an American) his suspense films spawned many films in that genre
David Lean - brilliant director one of many Brill Brits
Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger - a fantastic collaboration who made many fantastic British films
Peter Jackson - Genius
James Whale - the father and grandfather of all horror films
Michael Curtiz - made some of the best loved films
John Huston - his films with Humphrey Bogart are some of my favourites
John Ford - although not always politically correct, his westerns are some of the finest in that genre
M.Night Shyamalan - fantastic director, has made some of the most interesting and thoughtful films for man, many years.
Tim Burton - his films (and him) are a bit weird but are brilliant nonetheless
I also like Frank Capra, Billy Wilder, Howard Hawks, George Cukor, William Wyler and Kevin Costner.

The Thing That Annoys Me In Films [flameangry]
KIDS!!!!
Things That Annoy Me About Films[angry7]
1. Dumb people who try to compare films that are so different to each other. For example Bambi to Star Wars. Somehow they will find a way to compare characters, situations and the story between the two films.
2. Dozy people (usually stick thin women) who know nowt about films but get to interview famous, well respected actors and directors for making-of or premiere programmes. Most of whom have no idea what the actor or the director have been in or directed and 5 minutes prior to the interview look it up in a films guide. Surely there are more people around who deserve to interview these big stars?
3. Even dozier people, who the powers at be call celebrities and who have nothing to do with the film world, who stick their nose in the Top 100 shows with opinions that no-one cares to hear.
4. Cinemas thinking that everyone who watches films are deaf and turn the volume up on the adverts so your teeth rattle. If they are really nice they keep the volume cranked up all the way through the film. Are you listening Cineworld?
5. London premiers. It is bad enough when you live miles from the place and so are not fortunate enough to line the streest for hours waiting for the stars, but you cannot escape all the hype when a big film is released. T.V, magazines eveything will have some snippet about the grand event that you didn't get to see. London has all the premeiers, conventions and exhibitions but the one thing they can keep is the Dome. (Londoners don't take it personally I would still have a rant if it was Dover.)
6. The Oscars. No longer about the films and the people who craft them - their just shuffled to one side. All about the people and what they are wearing and who they are with. Who cares what suit Joe Bloggs is wearing?
There all my moaning done. [angel]

About Me[chatty]
Below you will find out more about what my interests are.
To start of with I live in Cheshire, England it is a really lovely part of the country and I have been very lucky to see lots of beautiful animals where I live - such as foxes, hedgehogs, squirels, bats, herons and an owl. We have had foxes, hedgehogs (one we rescued recently) and squirrels (one a few summers ago, called Scrat, we fed peanuts by hand) in our garden. I am trying to get a pond built so we can encourage even more frogs into our garden and hopefully other animals. Our garden is already wildlife friendly but anything else we can do to make it even more so would be great. The birds in our garden must be the best fed in Cheshire!]But more about animals later.
Favourite Season[frozen]
Winter. I hate the hot weather (although we don't have much in Cheshire), so I always look forward to the crisp, frosty mornings and evenings that winter gives. Until last Christmas (2004) (when we actually had snow on Christmas day I built an 8" snowman - yayy!!) [snow] I hadn't seen proper snow for 8 years I am always hoping that it will be a "White Christmas". I love Christmas time. I love looking round all the shops at the Christmassy things and seeing how towns and villages are decorated, we even go for drives to see how nicely or absurdly people decorate their homes. I suppose really at my age (cough, cough) it is a bit childish to still get excited by Christmas, but there's a child in all of us, and me enjoying the festive season like I do, is just the way I am. November is also a special month as my Mum's birthday is on the 2nd, my Dad's is on the 11th and my older brother's is on the 25th!
My Birthday[birthday]
20th December [xmas]
My Hobbies[odd]
I have had many hobbies (most of them short lived) but I enjoy watching films (obviously), reading, playing board and computer games, listening to music,Ebaying and doing cross stitch. I have nearly finishe my cross stitch of Gandalf The White from the scene where he is in the midst of battle from ROTK. There are 17,000 stitches but I have have a quater to do now! I also really enjoy gardening along with another one of my favourite hobbies which is annoying my older brother, well.......
Music[trendy]
I have been playing the recorder now for about 5 years and I think I can safely say I am quite good at it (I would hope so after all the time I have spent practising). I can pick out tunes on the keyboard, but I have yet to learn chords, although thanks to the music manuscript on the Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets CD I can play, with the correct chords, the Harry Potter theme. I can also pick out tunes on a guitar but that's about it. I would love to be able to play the keyboard - properly - but we will see. I am currently trying to play an Irish tin whistle as I have been wanting to play one for years. I wouldn't mind having a go at playing the clarinet or the violin either. I did wasnt a drum kit a few years ago but my parent drew the line at that!
Poetry [embarrassed]
I quite like poetry. I prefer ones that rhyme and I don't like these new fangled ones that are more like entire books but set out like poems. I have had a go at writing a few myself - one which revolved aroung Gimli but I haven't finished it yet (typical!). I like The Daffodils, The Tyger,The Listeners, The Charge Of The Light Brigade and various others. Some of my favourites are written by Lewis Carroll such as The Walrus and The Carpenter, Father William, The White Knight's Song and Jabberwocky. I also like all the poems from T.S Eliot's Old Possums Book Of Practical Cats.
Ebay[wild]
I have been on Ebay since September 11th 2002 and I really enjoy it. I can't really remember why we decided to look and then sign up, but the first thing we bought was a huge promo video holder in the shape of Sulley's head from Monsters Inc and also a Mummy Returns promo t shirt. It started from there. We have had over 420 transactions, both buying and selling but mainly buying(!). Recently Sideshow Weta Lord Of The Rings items have been what we are looking for (well I am but I think my Mum would prefer I didn't). That's what I like about Ebay, there are some items that you would not find anywhere else, like the Weta stuff. My brother has lots of clothing and crew stuff fom films, and without Ebay we would have none. You do have to careful of cowboys but you soon learn what to look out for. Long Live Ebay!

Ty Beanie Babies, Chubbleys, film sticker books, thimbles and Lord Of The Rings Weta busts and medallions. Me and my brother are big suckers for promo items for films - banners, bunting, standees, desk standees, window stickers, springys (my brother likes things you can wear, t-shirts, caps, watches and jackets). We are particularly pleased with our Gandalf The Grey and The White Standees, Frodo standee, Legolas standee, TTT banners, giant Sulley standee, HUGE Monsters Inc. window stickers and Scrat and Sid standees from Ice Age. Trouble is were running out of room so we can't display them all! [sad2]
Animals[bunny]
I am a huge animal lover and have great respect for them and the natural enviroment. I am against such "sports" like fox hunting and bull fighting, along with other barbaric acts like whale harpooning, shark baiting, bird baiting and all other forms of animal cruelty. I admire all those who work to stop this crualty to animals. I myself wanted to be a RSPCA vet or inspector but I don't think I could be either of those. I am hoping to work at an animal sanctuary or something like that as I really want to work with and help animals in need.
Pets[butterfly]
I have a cream coloured hamster called Murphy who is really cute, he's huge and muscular but a big softie.
R.I.P Murphy 14th August 2005
I now have a new male hamster called (after much deliberation) Scampi. He is about 7 weeks old at the time of writing this and, as his name suggests a right scamp.
I also have two female mice Brandy who's a mottled brown colour with a white stripe and Pepsi who is jet black with white stripes and splodges. They are both little rascals but have wonderful characters.

The Music Box (1932)
You want to laugh, cry...but mostly strangle the pair of them!!!!
The Laurel & Hardy Transfer Company Foundered 1931 are to deliver a piano which has been bought as a birthday gift by a wife for her husband. All is going fine for the to until helpful postman Charlie Hall (for once not in a role with a grudge against the boys) tell them, that the house they are looking for is at the top of the stoop - in other words on a big hill with lots of stairs between them and it! After practically flattening Ollie taking the piano of their cart, they proceed to take the piano up the stairs. Lots of straining later, half-way up they encounter a nanny with a pram trying to pass. Being the typical gentlemen, Ollie try's to assist the lady - leaving Stan holding onto the piano. Stan (being Stan) joins to help - leaving the piano to it's own devices which decides it would like to go down all the stairs to the bottom. Stan being fed up with the nanny being in hysterics at the pairs misfortune, he promptly kicks her "right in the middle of her daily duties" as she later explains to a policemen. The policemen encounters the two when they are back again half-way up the stairs with the piano. Stan goes down (at Ollie's insistence) to see what he wants - only to be told it's Ollie he wants to talk to (as he believes Ollie kicked the nanny). After letting go of the piano it once again finds it's way at the bottom - only this time with Ollie in tow. Back to square one. Up they go again this time to meet a grand gentlemen who wishes to pass. Ollie (very wisely) suggests he should walk around. The man explodes and we learn that he is a Professor and is too important to walk around. Anyone wearing a hat as large as his had better say farewell to it as courtesy of the boys, it rolls all the way down the stairs and under the wheels of a vehicle below. Stan & Ollie finally get to the top but Ollie mistakes the steps to the pond as the last few stairs to go. Splash! Ringing the doorbell Stan, guarding the piano wanders away leaving it to trundle it's merry way down all the stairs! When the boys finally get back up again the same helpful postman informs them that they should have driven up a road that would have led them to the top - instead of using the stairs. This being Stan & Ollie they proceed to take the piano back down the stairs again so they can come back up the "corret" way!
When they once again reach the top, and finding no-body home, Ollie suggest taking the piano through an open window on the top floor - not even checking to see if the front door is open. When they eventually get the piano into the house after a series of mishaps including Ollie and the piano falling into the pond, as well as confusion over who owns which hat - the when comes to open the case, which due to the fact it went for a paddle in the pond is full of water. Not a problem, as Stan very thoughtfully sponges the water with his handkerchief and wrings it out in Ollies hat. Some more mishaps follow in which the room is wrecked. To the music of the piano the duo have a little dance whilst clearing up the mess. The Professor, finds his home destroyed, a piano (a thing he loathes) and the same two who caused him grief previously in his house. In a rage he sets about destroying the piano - only for his wife to walk in who bought it as a birthday gift for him. The husband and wife make up and the Professor wishes to make amends with Stan & Ollie. All they want is for him to sign their delivery paper, but as they pass him a pen the ink squirts in the professor's face and the two scurry away with him in hot pursuit.
Very predictable. Very Laurel & Hardy. Very funny!!
The plot is so simple yet it is probably Laurel & Hardy's most memorable film. This shows their genius and their appeal more so than any other. It also shows them at the height of their wonderful career. It is a real mixture of laughing out loud, holding your hands over your eyes, sighing in exasperation or feeling you would like to knock their heads together. No matter how many time you see it you always feel the same. Their films give so much pleasure and you always walk away smiling.
The Importance of Being Earnest (2002)
Utterly awful
Although I have never read the original Oscar Wilde play I can only hope it is much better than this. As a huge fan of the original screen version of The Importance Of Being Earnest I was hoping for something good of the 2002 version. What I got was a load of rubbish. The costumes and the sets were in keeping with the period (unlike parts of the film) but apart from that it was awful. How respected British actors ever got tangled up with this farce I'll never know. The acting was very bad and the story in parts silly. Although generally, the story may have been keeping closer to Wilde's play rather than the 1952 film, what parts were added to this classic are, in my opinion, unforgivable (e.g the tattoo scene). If you hold classic British plays and films close to your heart I would suggest you do not watch this mauling of them.
Babe (1995)
How an adapation should be done
This is one of the most heart-warming films you are ever likely to see. Taken from the book by Dick King-Smith, it follows the adventures of a little piglet called Babe. It is beautifully shot, Australia substituted for England, and has a cast of human actors who feel like they have just popped out of the book itself. The animals are a clever mixture of real live dogs, pigs, sheep etc. and puppet performers. With some characters that you will just fall in love with, Babe is a true family film and will entertain you again and again. Nominated for Best Picture and unfortunately losing to Braveheart, this small film in comparison to all others nominated that year, is tale that will have you smiling (and perhaps a little bit of crying now and then) from start to finish. It has been kept close to the award-winning book and is how a film based on a book should be.
