Jupiter's Legacy (2021)
Missed it, really well...
Just don't think you can write a sci-fi Shakespearean drama. CGI cannot camouflage lack of depth, character and story. I watched all 8 episodes and was left very disappointed.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Mwaah....
Story is one of the worst ever put into movie. CGI is to cry for. I was really tempted to leave during the showing. But I thought it could not be this bad. My mistake.
A lot of people worked hard to make this film. That is why I vote 4 stars.
The Irishman (2019)
The noble art of story telling.
It's a must see. Great movie, wonderful director. Actors are phenomenal. Strange thing is you don't get it until you do. And it is fully worth the 3 and a half hours it takes.
Loved it.
The Titan (2018)
Not a complete waiste
Five stars for the effort. It all started nice enough. Could have been good SF-movie, like we've seen one almost every year now for about the last 10 years or so. But this is not it. It races into eugenetics like there is no tomorrow. Which is a pity, because the idea is nice: how to succesfully conquer another planet.
I don't think they will conquer a lot of spectetors.
Endeavour (2012)
Every episode an evening well spend.
I have always been a great fan of the original series, featuring John Thaw as Morse. I always thought the stories were well written and televised. Which is as important. These series have me in awe. I am completely blown away. I am a great fan of the Montalbano character in the RaiUno-series. Also well written. And well televised. But this is something different. There is suspense. There is character. And there is life. I don't know how to put it otherwise. Of course we know how Morse became in his later life, but there was no history, no growing- up. These series show the growth of the character, by an actor who seems to be raised to do this. Shaun Evans does a masterpiece. I am afraid he'll be Endeavour Morse for the rest of his life.
Passengers (2016)
disappointment
To me the movie was disappointing. There is no reason to call this movie science fiction. With everything added and the plot clear, it could have been anywhere. Speed 3 for that matter. Writing in some terrorists shouldn't have been any trouble. Perhaps I should say that I am a great fan of SF. To me writers like Asimov, Heinlein and Van Vogt are masters of the trade. When I first read about the story line I thought it would be a movie in their tradition. It is clearly not. I cannot go into details why not, because I could (would?) spoil other people's enjoyable evening. As a love story it is not that bad. And I like a plot in which you don need a lot of characters to tell the story. A must see for the fans of the actors.
Interstellar (2014)
What a way to bring science back to Science Fiction!
What a great movie. What a wonderful story. For me there are not enough superlatives to put on this film. I was finally able to convince my wife not to go to an art-house movie but to this monster instead. She was not sorry. And however high my expectations were, I was not disappointed. Not at all. Finally a real SF-movie. No Trolls, no wizards, no fairy tales. Just plain science. Someone really thought about the levels of reality (Yes, of course. Gnomes do exist. In your mind!) For me as a fan of SCIENCE Fiction, it was a great experience. Afterwards I read the book by Kip Thorne, about the science behind it all. I know there is a documentary about it. I have to watch it.
And fellow men, this is not all. The directors are planning on filming the Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov. I can't wait. There is no way they can spoil that! Live long and prosper.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
Thank the Heavens for CGI
I can understand the difficulty in picturing someone else's vision on Armaggedon. However difficult, the question remains why would one need over two and half hours to do so. Why would one need over 8 hours to tell the story the writer did in 250 pages. The form has overtaken the message of the story, which, in itself, is worth telling.
Why do I vote 6 out of 10? I really like the acting. Martin Freeman as Bilbo is much more satisfactory to watch than Elijah Wood as Frodo, for example. The CGI is outstanding (Although I don't like 3D, because of the flatness in depth. It is just not enough). The story is great, especially when you consider where the inspiration came from.
Let just say I can not wait on the final chapters of the Narnia Chronicles on celluloid. There are only so much directors that can be allowed to have a personality greater than their product. In my humble opinion Peter Jackson is not one of them.
It's a pity, and what a pity.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
No Smiley, just Sir Alec.
Ever since I had heard they were shooting a new "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" I have been anxious to see it. How I was disappointed. I mean the photography, and the acting, and all that is wonderful. The production sets the seventies wonderfully, I think. They actually did a better job than the TV-series, that was shot in the late seventies. It is just that I couldn't stand the stand-in for Sir Alec. Gary Oldman is a great actor. You need a great actor to impersonate Sir Alec Guinness. But. I was hoping Mr Goldman would invent his own Smiley. He didn't, alas. The movie would be a solid 9 if not for this. As I am a great fan of both actors, this is a real miss. The character wasn't written for Sir ALec. For the rest it is a must see. If just for the scenes in which Mr Oldman is a better Sir Alec, than Sir Alec himself. THe closing scene is a gem. Although one needs knowledge of the book to get up with the speed of it all. Anyway, the first of my top 10 for 2012. Absolutely.
