Doctor G (2022)
Worst WOKE film I ever saw.
This is to be the worst WOKE film I ever see.
You know when sometimes when there is a argument shown in a film where it is shown in negative manner but it actually makes sense to you as an audience, you know the film is bad.
The film totally disagrees with everything society thinks.
Basically I believe it is written by a person who is inspired by some woke American movement.
Trying to change the society for the worst.
The screenplay is so bad that you cringe while watching it. It is again like templates from American Medical shows and inserted hindi dialogues in it.
There are no punches and no good storyline. Totally waste fo time.
The Sopranos (1999)
Cannot be a better show than this
I write for films and I was researching some good shows to see some good writing to get inspired. I saw all the top 10, top 100 lists of TV shows and one thing that was common among all the lists was the a series called Sopranos. .
The shows is created by David chase and starts very intimidating yet funny, cozy and fatherly character called Tony Sopranos which was exceptionally played by James Gandolfini.
The idea of the entire series was originated from the weird thought that what if a criminal mob boss feels the need to see a psychologist and have weekly therapy sessions with him. The idea was stretched and developed into an entire series which became Sopranos.
Again, since there is Mafia so it is kind a Italian show in English language. Trust me, no one can be a better mafia than Italian, not in real life, not even in reel life.
Sopranos works so well because of its strong characterization, well written plots and most importantly writing characters as evil but still as humans.
There will be times when you would hate a character and you want him to die, and suddenly in next episode you will just beg for some character to let him live because you like that character now.
You will miss a minor character when he would be gone from the series and would wish that he makes a comeback.
I always believed that a good series has to have good writing for minor or side characters. Most writers write good protagonist but they often write carelessly about minor characters. A good lead character will always stand on the good writing of the minor characters. This series has that, every character has a good story.
There is not just crime drama, I feel Sopranos is more a family drama than a crime drama. I would call it a family drama based on a background of criminals.
The characters are as selfishly human as they can be.
Tony Sopranos is all powerful when he is on streets but at home he has no control over his own family. His wife Carmela, Played brilliantly by Edie Falco, showcase a mature but meek character initially but later becomes more active and strong as the series moves. Tony has no control over her. He had control over her but he lost his because of his philandering activities.
I love the series and it has been years since I saw the series first still the scenes of the episodes of the series run infront of my eyes like i have seen it yesterday.
It is a must watch for those who have been indulging in Netflix and Prime series day by day who doesn't have good story but only hook points to keep you engaged. Real engagement is a good story and Sopranos has all those elements that a good series must have. .
Your Honor (2020)
Bakwas Series.. copy to dhang se kar lete..
I don't think these people have even observed human beings before making this series.
You wouldn't know that direction can be so bad.
Everything in this series is bad.
20 minutes into the series and you know that the series is really bad and you cna do nothing about it.
Shiva (1989)
RGV made a Super powerful movie which will be remembered for ages
RGV, the director is lost now but what he did with his first film can never be forgotten. From Shiva to Satya, there was God lying in his mind.
Shiva is a film that comes once in a lifetime and not many people have the guts to make it.
I remember watching Shiva when i was a kid and mesmerized by the film. I didn't know who Nagarjuna was, who Amala was and was least concerned about the director.
At that time the biggest impact on my mind was left by the villain of the film Raghuvaran. He literally became my nightmare for days and I was worried he was coming after me.
Somehow I never saw the film in completion until I grew up so basically I never saw Raghuvaran getting beaten up in the second half of the film which further increased my fear for him.
The film is a milestone in terms of story line and how it was shot.
It is a typical underdog story where a man called Shiva who is very shy but have surprising amount of anger inside him fights against any injustice incurred on him.
Shiva is not someone who will meddle with others in their business unless someone hits him or someone near him, he is not bothered about what is happening around him.
But when a college Villain crosses his path, he has to retaliate and the weapon he chose becomes the most famous weapon of fighting in colleges after that, it was the cycle chain.
That was the most interesting part oft he film where the graph of the film went roaring high. That fight sequence where Shiva first time shows his anger and his power, not just to the goons but also to the audience.is the highest peak of excitement in the films.
The rest of the film is how he deals with the goons and his associates after that.
I am not much fan of the movie after the second half.
The problem was that the character of Shiva had shown his full capabilities and we know how much capable the villain was. There was nothing much left to anticipate in the second film except for the moment where the hero will beat the hell out of the villain.
But the overall film was a treat to watch and you won't get bored watching it second time or many other times.
I love how RGV handled the foley in the film and not use background score too much which gave the fighting sequences more depth and feeling of reality while viewing it.
Nagarjuna nailed the character of Shiva and other characters were equally good too. The casting was superb.
The film is a must watch.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
There is only one word that can describe this film - BRILLIANT
Once in a while comes a film that changes the rules of film making and coincidentally Tarantino has been doing that for quite some time.
The First best part of the film is its non linear structure which is highly incoherent and yet makes sense.
The second best part of the film is the dialogues which are so unique and so out of the way of that is happening on screen that is amuses you. Sometimes you just want that dialogue ranting to run for few more minutes.
The third best thing is that characters come and go as they please and sometimes even die and then reappear and you won't mind it because that is all part of the film structure.
There is an urban legend that Tarantino wrote the entire screenplay on cards and then reshuffled them and whichever order the card stabilized became the sequence of scenes in the film.
You can measure the greatness of the film from the fact that the film written from a hotel room in hastiness later won the biggest prize that a film can get at Cannes Film Festival called "Palm D'Or".
It is not just a must watch film, this film is a case study on films and is taught in schools and will be done so because "Pulp Fiction" cannot be characterized in one genre. It has its own genre and it is the only member there.
Kudos to Great cinema.
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)
The Indian Film which Brought Bollywood on International Platform
Before Lagaan came there was not a single film from Indian Commercial Film zone which made it past Indian Boundaries.
In India itself we have so many industries in different languages and they are all producing great content based on their audience needs.
When Lagaan came there were huge expectations as it was one of the most expensive films of India and the making of the film was also highly publicized.
They had done great efforts in making the film and also they had put every effort they could to make it successful.
Aamir always had high hopes for his films and he works hard for his films.
This film was released along with Gadar and though Gadar became a bigger hit, Lagaan gathered more acclaims.
Gadar was a massy entertainer with patriotic feel while Lagaan had a class and was well written to cater every audience.
It has a David Vs. Goliath story where poor farmers fight against mighty British Empire and what happens next forms the story.
There is curiosity which is maintained till the end of the film about who will win what and I think one should watch this film to see how brilliantly Gowarikar, the director captures everything in it.
I didn't like it in the first viewing but my interest in it increased with repeated viewings.
Watch it to believe it.
There was a reason why this film got nominated for Academy awards.
Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003)
One of the greatest Indian Films that you can watch on Repeat mode
I went to see Kal ho na ho basically but we didn't get the tickets.
Since we were already there we decided to watch another movie.
We knew this film was going to be another Sanjay Dutt movie with lots of action and lots of guns, fighting and goons flying in air but we decided to give it a chance anyways.
I consider myself very fortunate that, that day i didn't get the tickets to Kal ho Na ho, though it is also a good film but Munnabhai is class apart.
Hirani says in his interviews that he wasn't given too much budget for making the film and there was hopelessness for the film in the market as most of Dutt's film has flopped for quit some time. There was no other major star in it.
Even the antagonist was a relatively unknown guy called Boman Irani who had a Theater background and had never done any films professionally before.
The film is so well written and so nicely executed that it makes you wonder how can the director be so great with details and humor.
The timing of actors is just perfect and everyone is given the perfect dialogues and screen space.
Whether it be the secondary characters or main lead, everyone made their presence felt in the film.
The direction of Hirani is perfect and everything else is also perfect knowing that the film was made by a perfect guy who plans his films a lot in details.
In my opinion it is one the greatest films ever made in Indian cinema and stands tall along with Mother India, Sholay and Mughle Azam.
Some people do compare it with "Patch Adams" and say Hirani copied it from there.
Hirani has categorically denied it but again, I say, even if he has done something like that, this film is far better and more entertaining that "Patch Adams" and more than that - I don't care.
The film is damn good.
Joker (2019)
Why don't we already declare the best film of 2019 and give Phoenix and Oscar already
I went to see Joker because everyone else was going to theaters to watch it and was raving about it on Social Media.
the only thing that was trending was last three days was Joker and I decided to watch it despite my lack of interesting DC characters and not liking the trailer that much.
To an extent the film matched my expectations. It was sad, gross, violent and to gloomy.
On the other hand I had never before seen such beautiful character development in any film before.
I have always written before that people should stop copying Nolan because what Nolan does can only be done by Nolan and no one else.
The direction of Todd Philips is top notch and cannot be compared with any director. Philips has found his own niche and has a great future in films. He will soon emerge as a force in film direction.
The story and writing by both Scott Silver and Todd Philips is brutal and non-apologetic. They let the pen lose and wrote the story like joker was himself writing his biography.
There are films in which everything comes together and makes it perfect.
Same happened with with this film.
It is ok to hail Phoenix as a master actor but the direction, writing, editing, camera work is par excellence.
At this point I would also like to mention that the music by Hildur Guðnadóttir is exhilarating and I don't know how such young lady can compose such great and haunting music.
Everything works in this film.
The last scene where Arthur (Joker's name int he film) gets up on the car and makes a smile on his face with his blood was such high point of the film that everyone just stood up in the hall and started clapping.
What Nicholson started was made perfect by Ledger and now Phoenix is taking it forward.
Great film.
Dear Zindagi (2016)
Why do the make a film with no story arc?
I still didn't understand the purpose of making this film.
The only thing i liked about this film was that it didn't give me a headache.
The movie was a simple breeze of fresh air and story moved forward with snail pace.
Shahrukh did what he does best, played himself.
Alia again was a surprise. Is there anything that Alia Bhatt can't do.
If nepotism looks like this, then I want more nepotism from industry.
sorry, Just kidding. Like industry already isn't closed for outsiders.
Anyways, the film is all about Alia trying to find that why is she is so mean yet sweet to everybody.
Her conflicting nature is something that people don't understand and she herself doesn't understand.
Comes Mr. Khan whose own life is in shambles but wouldn't mind giving therapy to Alia in highly unconventional manner to earn some extra bucks.
His advises are good and then comes a very predictable plot twist. Alia falls in love with Khan. Duh, who didn't see that coming.
Anyways, the direction of Gauri Shinde is ok if not bad.
Screenplay needed more work and more events instead of just roaming around few locations.
Secondary cast needed to be better and I think they just casted them frivolously without bothering who was playing what.
I might have done the same knowing i have SRK and Alia in my film.
Cinematography by Laxman Utekar is good and editing could have been more crisp.
Production design in first half is not impressive but gets better in second half in real locations.
Over all a decent watch, but not something praiseworthy.
Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana (2017)
Good movie, don't why there is so much criticism
Well, every film has their own flaws and so this film also has its flaws too but it is nonetheless a good film and I for one, enjoyed it.
I am from UP and I have seen government officers from a very near distance and I can assure you that Rajkumar Rao's portrayal of the IAS officer is to the mark and top notch.
After some time in service, all officers start to behave the same.
Kriti Kharbanda was a surprise for me because I haven't seen any of her movies before and she looks damn gorgeous and beautiful in this film. She fits the role like it was written for her only. She is a super actress and has a great future as well.
The story for the film needed to be reworked but still it engrosses you throughout.
The love sequences are sometimes too romantic, sweet and over stretched. It appears sometimes that a bit of humor if added would have made it more interesting.
The most interesting part of the film is the second half because that is where the revenge begins.
The Song "Thukra ke Mera Pyar" was the song which forced me to watch the film because there has been so many spoofs of the song on internet right now.
The song has become kind of anthem for heart broken poor teenagers.
The song and the second half is where most heart broken males from lower middle class connected with the film because everyone has someone who left them for someone better and all they can think of was having revenge.
The revenge, thankfully, that Rao's character takes on Kriti's character is not some physical stupid criminal act rather he becomes bigger officer than Kriti and comes back to solve a corruption case that is thrusted on her.
Previously Kriti left Rao as at the night of marriage she comes to know that she is selected at PCS and her mother in law won't allow her to work after marriage.
Rao's family faces terrible insult form Kriti's parents and also in society. We se a heartbroken Rao but we never know that he is going to take revenge. The Director does not disclose what is going to happen next.
Rao gets a bigger post than her and than torments her mentally for some time but in the end realizes that he loves her too much too see her too much pain.
The Only problem with the film is that Act 1 is long for no reason, Act 2 is over stretched and ends too son without much drama and very passive scenes and Act 3 just comes and goes.
I think they didn't even work on the climax and ended it as fast as possible.
Barring all these negative points the film is good to watch and you won't mind losing your time watching the film.
Blackmail (2018)
Worst movie of 2018
Watching other films of Abhiney Deo, I have started to feel that Delhi Belly was good only because of Aamir Khan's involvement.
Deo has a background in Advertising and directing ad films so he presents the films brilliantly but his films lack in story writing.
Blackmail is one such film.
You just don't get anything in the film.
They refuse to explain anything to you and have tried to unapologetically copy COENian humor and failed.
I think people should stay away from Coen brothers type of filmmaking because it is only they who know how to do it.
It is only them who knows how to make a scene comedy and grumpy at the same time.
Blackmail boasts of brilliant performances and good camera work marred by some weed smoking writer who had no clue what he was writing and an over confident director who cared more about the look of the film than the actual film.
None of the characters have any closure.
None of the good plot points introduced has any meaning and sometimes the most senseless things become meaningful.
Characters are dumb as left activists and you don't feel a thing of excitement while watching the film. You just want the film to end because nothing much is happening in the film.
Songs are useless. Characters are more useless. Story is most useless. And direction is the worst that you can witness in filmmaking.
Irrfan Khan is at his best. If he was not there, this film would tank down so badly that no traces of it would have been found..
Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017)
Rajkumar Rao overshadows everyone in this comedy of weak screenplay !!
Frankly speaking, I never liked Rajkumar Rao. I found him to be an average actor who was just trying way too hard to become an actor. I never saw his genius in any of his acting works. It was also because it takes a good director to take out the real talent of an actor. This was the perfect script for him.
By all means the character of Rajkumar Rao in the film is secondary one. He is not the protagonist, Ayushman is. This role is a lesson for every guy who rejects movies
Ayushman is the one who gets to do heroic things and he is also the one who gets the girl in the end, but - and a big but, Rajkumar Rao wins the heart of everyone in the audience.
When I started watching the movie, forty minutes had gone and the film was still moving with snail pace nothing much going on here. I think it took too much time to establish its lead characters. I think they wer ealso under he impression that the story was of Kriti and Ayushman but this is where they got wrong.
The film actually starts when we are introduced to Pritam Vidrohi (Rajkumar Rao) who is a small worker in a saree shop and write his poems in spare time. He is a petite mellow character who is afraid of everyone including his mother. He has a pushover attitude and he often fumbles while speaking.
The best part about his character is that he is the only character in the film with a character arc.
Chirag Dubey (Ayushman) remains same from the beginning of the film.
That is the worst part of the film. We know that Chirag has morals issues and he never nice to people. He always has selfish reasons for doing things and enver cares about other people's emotions. He has also done something bad to Pritam during college yet he wouldn't mind approaching Pritam again for his selfish desires.
He is again doing the same thing To Pritam. Chirag is the most selfish character of the film and he never changes. Even when in the end they try to show that he has changed and asks Pritam to marry Sweety, we know that he hasn't changed a bit but yielded to the situation.
He thinks that since Sweety loves Pritam too as this is what Pritam makes him believe so he has no other way to get Sweety but to gladly accept the reality. Despite efforts by Pritam to change him and show him his real face, Chirag remains the same.
Pritam on the other hand initially tries to pretend to be a rowdy with bad tongue and aggressive personality when forced by Chirag later adopts the character and gives it back to Chirag.
Sweety has no character arc in the film and most of the time she doesn't even know what is happening. She remains the same and is a trophy character.
No other character in the film is important enough to have a character arc either.
The film is made on a high concept screenplay where any character's history and background doesn't matter. We are introduced to them, we get to know them, who they are and they never change.
In the end, the girl goes to Chiraag despite us knowing that Pritam was a better guy and his character is never compensated in the film for his niceness.
I think the film would have been a bigger hit if the character of Pritam Vidrohi was explored a little more and was given more importance while writing.
The film is boring at times and seems dragged but it is not because of editing but because it is too predictable at time. I won't blame the editor for it.
Camerawork is fine and since it is a simple movie so the shot taking was also simple. Nothing to mention there.
Acting wise Rajkumar Rao beats them all but still Ayuhsman Khurana and Pankaj Tripathi leaves their mark.
Rohit Chaudhary as Chirag's friend also does interesting role and performs well. Seema Pahwa is always good so can't praise her more. However I do feel that Seema is now stereotyped with one kind of roles and she should try other roles as well.
Songs of the film are quite popular in the UP area and are average. They are made for selected audience and I think that their target audience liked what they heard. They are not for mass audience.
Overall a one time watch film and multiple viewing to watch only one person - Rajkumar Rao as Pritam Vidrohi
Fargo (1996)
The most unconventional zany crime drama have ever seen
Fargo is a film that usually other films are not.
It break rules of film making like crushing the fruits in a mixer.
It is the story of Jerry who has this plan to get his wife kidnapped by two low life criminals Carl and Grimsrud.
Just like his name Grimsrud is a grim man who does not like to speak too much while Carl on the other hand is quite talkative and pretends to think too much but always ending up finding himself in a mess.
Jerry's father in law is a rich man who doesn't seem to like or respect Jerry a bit. Jerry is a car sales executive in a showroom and think that he deserves to be compensated and helped by his father in law.
His wife Jean is a satisfied housewife who is completely settled in her middle class life. She doesn't care about her father's abundance of money and her husband's lack of money.
The kidnapping is done but the kidnapping also leads to three irresponsible and avoidable murders on the road by Grimsrud where we also get to see his dark and unpredictable nature.
The small scheme of kidnapping and asking his father in law for money goes haywire and now involves murder, This is where Marge comes in.
Marge is the Police Chief in the area and her family is as normal as it can be.
Her husband and her, were both in Police once but then her husband left his job and spends time painting while Marge is working as Police chief.
Marge is good at her job but she is very girly from inside. She is also conservative in her nature. She is going through her first pregnancy period and also solves the case like that.
The best part about Fargo is its non-genre defining structure. The film is not funny yet the way character behaves you always feel something funny in the scenes. You think it is going to be a funny film when suddenly there is murders and blood all over the place and still the film appears to be funny.
You are never sure which mood you should carry while watching the film.
The character of Marge impresses you more than anything.
There were two things which I think was difficult for anyone to digest initially about her. First was her pregnancy and second was her meeting with her old friend Mike.
Mike, at first appears to be interested in Marge despite knowing that she is happily married and pregnant. We become sure of it when he hugs for longer time than it usually takes for someone to hug and also he forcefully tries to sit next to her. Mike says that he is going through a tough period and his wife has recently died. Marge feels sad for him.
Later Marge comes to know from another former classmate that Mike was lying and his wife is healthy as a bull.
This is the key factor which makes Marge conclude that maybe Jerry is lying about his wife too.
This results in her catching the criminals and Jerry.
I love how Marge says "Yeah" when she is talking on phone which is very synonymous to any housewife lingo. It goes against her profession of a Police chief.
She is pregnant which makes her vulnerable but that doesn't stop her from doing things that she has to do. She works all day long and yet manages to find time for her husband and her home.
Fargo is one of the rarest examples of how you can mix multiple genres into one and escape successfully into it.
The film never answers your questions and is crazily unapologetic.
It never tells you what happened to all the money that Carl buried in the snow.
It never tells you what happened to Jerry's wife and his son.
The film was good because though it never answers all these questions yet you kind of feel satisfied that every wrong guy met their fate. Jerry and Grimsrud both gets arrested.
I love how they end the film with what can be the most cliched dialogue in the film.
Marge says, "Why kill so many people for little amount of money?"
This shows the contradictory innocent nature of Marge and how despite working in Police and catching criminals all the time, somehow her innocence isn't tampered with. She just can't understand why people commit crime. Life is too normal for her.
This Oscar winning drama is definitely a must watch.
Tumbbad (2018)
Why the fetish to like an unlikable movie just to sound intellectual !!
I have heard that this film took nearly ten years to get made and as an audience of the film I would expect that they would do everything in those ten years to make the script as interesting and watchable as possible.
Most Indian Directors make the films to satisfy their whims and fantasies.
They refuse to accept that film making is an art and just like any art, it has it own rules and limitations.
Tumbbad breaks all those rules and not for good.
The story is told in bits and pieces.
The story keeps taking long jumps in the time without any explanation or transition.
We don't understand but we wait for something interesting to happen and it doesn't happen.
The only interesting thing in the film are inside the cave.
I understand the film is technically brilliant with great cinematography, great color grading and great sound effects but the weak story line pounds heavy over everything.
The lead actor Soham Shah is also the producer of the film and in real life he is a rich loaded guy. He is an Indian Millionaire.
He starred in some commercial films earlier but none worked so he moved towards independent filmmakers and came out with Ship of Thesus, which was another film with deep meanings and which was blown out of proportions.
Soham Shah cannot act and that is why the director hasn't given him too many talkie scenes as his dialogue delivery is worst.
The director played on his expressionless face and created the character like that.
There is nothing much to see in this film.
On internet everyone was praising the film but when I went to see it in the hall, everyone was just cursing it.
I think few intellectuals loved it but people who seek entertainment in films, this film was not for them.
No matter what one's argument be, the film that bores you cannot be good.
Mukkabaaz (2017)
This film is a guide on how to ruin a completely good concept.
Frankly I sold on the first teaser and when the promo starring Ravi Kishan's voice came online, I made up my mind that I am going to see this film.
There was no way I am going to miss this film.
Kashyap write great dialogues and his writing is a treasure for online meme makers but where he falls is direction, editing and story structure.
In every film of his, he builds up characters to a level where he are just waiting for them to win and afraid of predictability, he makes them lose.
He has done that in Gulal, He has done that In Wasseypur and he has done the same in this film.
This film is an out and out Vinit Singh's film and the passion of him behind this film can be seen. He performs greatly and he really makes you believe in that character.
His scenes especially at the government office and home are too real to confuse them with documentary shots.
The young actress Zoya looks graceful but has nothing special in the film to do.
Jimmy Shergill steals the show from Vineet singh whenever he is on screen.
The best part about movie are the scenes between Ravi Kishen and Jimmy Shergill.
I don't know what the protagonist achieves by the end of this film.
I don't know what was the one liner for the movie.
I don't what happened in the film in the end.
Just because you want to play with mind's audience and does not want your film to be predictable doesn't mean that you take your story off the roads.
This film could have been a game changer if Anurag Kashyap didn't try to do every thing with one film.
This film pours out to the world his weaknesses as a film maker.
And when the movies doesn't work he would blame audience for not being able to understand the film or not supporting Independent filmmakers.
Make good films and films will work.
The main reason that this film does not have a good box office collection is that this film does not have a great storyline and confuses audience about the intentions of the protagonists, also of the director.
Frozen (2007)
A Cinematography Show reel, nothing else.
I heard about Frozen when it was winning awards all over the world and I was curious to watch the film.
Few years later I got the chance to see the film and realized it was nowhere near to all the hype it had generated.
The only good thing about the film was Danny's acting and his voice with heavy baritone and its cinematography by Shankar Raman.
The story it appears has been lifted from the Bimal Roy's film "Do Bigha Zameen" and is given a different twist.
An apricot Jam seller finds himself in the middle of a conundrum when his house falls in the way of army operations and they want him to leave the house and move somewhere else.
The story was good but the treatment was so boring that I slept twice during the film.
The film moves with the speed of snail pace.
Something I guess festival people loves. They love slow pace and films with metaphors and hidden meanings.
This film didn't have any.
I didn't like the film at all.
In the end the director tries to do a Schindler list while bring a color in the film and no one understands it why.
Not recommended.
Andhadhun (2018)
Calling it best film of the year will be an underrated statement
There was literally no expectation when I went to see this film.
I went alone because there was no hype and no one around me was particularly interested in watching the film.
I have no idea why the film attracted me because I rarely go and see a film on the first day.
I loved the film at the first go. I was literally dancing with joy after watching this film. It is surprising what a good film can do to you.
Lately my film experiences of Indian films had been so bad that my faith in good Indian films had lifted up.
There was has been no story in any film, especially of Salman Khan's.
This film was, however, different.
The opening of the film starts with a farmer trying to kill a blind rabbit and we don't know what it is because the rabbit story doesn't end and we move to the city.
The character establishments happen for 15 minutes in which we are introduced to every major character.
The director doesn't waste any time in introducing characters and never get into details of their history or try to explain why they are doing what they are doing.
The characters are as normal as we are.
Radhika Apte looks gorgeous as a change because till now she had been given character roles only and for the first time I think she did a glam role. You will fall in love with her after watching the film.
After fifteen minutes, the story starts to change and the real nature of people start to come out.
Every character in the film has dubious character and every main character has a secret to hide and protecting that secret becomes the story of the film.
The director lets everything go haywire by the time interval comes and you wonder what will happen next but then he starts rearranging them back.
First half is very believable, but it is the second half the becomes too filmy.
I didn't like the second half that much but then the director plays a game with audience, it ends the film on a very high note.
The film ends with a scene that just blows you away and makes you rethink about everything you have seen. (of course not telling you that here)
This is a gem of a film and films like this comes once in a while.
The film is inspired by a short film about a blind piano player and it is duly given its credit in the end.
I saw the short film to know how much of it is copied and realized that only the basic idea was lifted and the entire film was later woven around it.
This film is as original as it can be.
There is no reason why you should miss one of the best films of Indian cinema.
Shazam! (2019)
DC can never be as good as Marvel.
So they tried a little bit of Marvel here.
No more Dark setup and little bit more of comedy, but it didn't work for me.
First fifteen minutes you don't know what is happening because the scenes are badly joined and none of the characters are introduced properly.
You don't understand what is happening till you reach half the film.
The film moves very fast.
I guess they were under pressure to make an entertaining film.
The kid who turns into Shazam is basically an arrogant kid who does not like anybody and the entire world bores him.
But the moment he becomes Shazam, he becomes funny and intolerably talkative.
I didn't understand the personality change.
In the film, there are no other people except Shazam and the people around him.
No one cares that there is a freak with superpowers roaming around the city.
The screenplay is badly written and there are scenes which doesn't lead to anything.
For example, there is a scene where Billy (the kid Shazam) and Freddy, his foster brother, are recording videos to see what Superpowers does he have and later upload it on YouTube getting millions of views.
After that it is not even shown what happened to it. No one cared I guess.
There is no police involved and no media. The general public is also takes this weird costume wearing superhero for granted.
The film is a collection of badly written scenes joined together.
One thing happens after another.
Shazam doing a public display of his powers and accidentally punctures a bus.
The bus is about to fall down but he saves it.
The moment he saves it, the villain appears. Then there is a fight between the two. the villain then kidnaps Freddy. Shazam comes to save him and gets beaten up... blah blah.
I mean how convenient plotting is that.
The film is supposed to be comedy but there is not a single scene where I even smiled, let alone laughing.
Good attempt but I think they have to try harder next time.
Ghulam (1998)
One of the best from Aamir Khan
The movie is a copy, not inspired, from Marlon Brando's Masterpiece "On the Water Front".
Story and scenes are nearly copied and there are times when even the dialogues are copied.
But it has been made Indian by including over emotional angles and a love story where Rani Mukherjee completely dominates the scene.
This was Rani Mukherjee's first hit film and in a way launched her. She looked very beautiful in the film, even though she has a small role, she leaves her mark in the film.
This film is an out and out Aamir Khan film and he performs very well. It was the time before he turned to Method acting and was picking good roles only.
One of the song from the film called "aati kya khandala" was a huge hit and it was the first time when Aamir Khan had sang a song. It was special for his fans.
Shahrukh later copied him in Josh and sang a song too.
Other actors followed the suit soon.
No other song worked like this song.
It was nicely pictured and it was sung like the character himself was singing the song.
The best part i like about this film is the climax fight of Siddhu (Aamir Khan) and Ronnie Bhai (Sharad Saxena).
The fight is nicely choreographed and never before in the Indian Cinema such fight was shown.
Siddhu is heavily beaten by Ronnie but then later Siddhu gets up and blows the face of Ronnie by hitting him on one side of his face again and again till he falls down.
I just loved that scene when I first saw it.
The entire film moves with an entertaining phase but the climax is the high point and that is one quality of a good film.
To have a great climax scene.
Everything works in this film - the songs, the story, the treatment and the acting and the casting director has done a great job.
Sharad Saxena whom we normally see as villain's sidekick was given the role of the main antagonist in the film.
Rachit Kapoor as the elder brother of Aamir has done his job with complete sincerity.
The only thing not working was Rani Mukherjee's personal life and the acting of his father, played by Raju Kher who is a terrible actor.
Rest is superfine in the film.
Satya (1998)
One of the greatest films in the history of Indian Cinema.
You Cannot watch Satya once.
The film is a work of genius and is a pure art.
I have seen this film so many times that now I have forgotten the counting.
Even if you begin watching Satya midway, you can't stop yourself from watching the entire film.
The film made by now defunct Ram Gopal Verma and written by Genius Saurabh Shukla and a new entrant, Anurag Kashyap was not shot in a typical film manner.
It was shot literally without a complete draft and most of the actors just improvised their roles.
A film becomes a good film when every character in the film is a memorable one.
Satya has that quality. There is not a single character in the entire film which won't leave you mesmerized by their performance in the film.
Even the actors with smaller roles leave an impact on you.
Satya is a story of a man named Satya, hence the movie name, who is new to Bombay and is looking for a job.
He is a man of few words and wouldn't tolerate anything wrong happening to him.
He is angry all the time and rarely smiles.
The character of Satya was inspired from the protagonist, Howard Roark of the Ayn Rand Novel "The fountainhead".
Kashyap was highly inspired by the novel gave the idea to Verma about introducing a character like Roark in the by lanes of Mumbai Crime world.
The film is so well connected and well made that at times you forget that you are watching a movie and feel that you are actually inside the the crime world.
You relate with characters and feel like you know them personally.
The characters of Bhiku Mahatre and his wife pyari are so well written that despite them fighting all the time, you fall in love with them.
The film is about power, betrayal, love, revenge, friendship and all under the background of Mumbai Crime world.
It was a silent hit at that time as there were no major stars in the film so no one was even expecting that but word of mouth soon caught up and people flocked to see this film.
The lead actor J.D. Chakravarthy was a side villain in Verma's first film Shiva and played his role to the perfection in the film.
I still can't see him any other role and feel that he was not an actor but Satya himself.
You cannot miss this film at any cost.
Kalank (2019)
If you haven't seen the film, then consider yourself lucky.
I went to see the film first day first show.
Dharma is a brand and with cluster of stars like Sanjay Dutt, MAdhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Kunal Kemu and more, no one would think the director would take this project casually.
Well he did.
No one expected it to be this bad but it was bad that it wasn't even good anywhere.
Ok spoiler alert.
There is no story.
Sanjay Dutt is in special appearance and so is Madhuri Dixit and Kunal Kemu.
Sonkashi Sinha does not even have a role and dies midway.
Why she did this film, I have no idea!!
Aditya Roy Kapoor does what he does best, not act but stand and say his dialogues straight face. The only thing this guy excels is in crying and he can cry all the time.
Story. Well, there is no story. This film is basically a showreel of the star actors Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. They are presented beautifully.
Alia looks fabulous in the film but I didn't spend 300 bucks on the films ticket to watch the beauty of Alia whom I can watch anytime on Youtube.
It is the age old story of a rich man eloping with a lower caste dancer and having an illegitimate child. The child grows up and takes the revenge and tries to ruin the family.
The problem is not the story but the treatment of the story.
None of the scenes are taking the film forward or telling any kind of story.
No character in the film has anything to do.
It appears they are all dead inside you don't understand why no one is doing anything even when wrong things are happening to them.
On top of that the director stole the sequences, like two friends shouting to vent out frustrations, from Jab we met and Life in a metro.
Hussein Dalal wrote a complete trash screenplay but the funny thing is that the people at Dharma didn't even bother to recheck it.
They gave it a green signal.
There might be chances that the writer did good writing as I haven't seen the screenplay. So in that case, I will give complete credit to the Director who came up with this bad film. Everything with the film was awful.
I still can't decide which film was more awful - Thugs of Hindustan or this film.
Murder Mystery (2019)
First half - Good but second half is dreadful !!
I was highly recommended this movie by many people and so I opened my Netflix today and started watching it.
I was laughing and laughing all the way till my first thirty minutes in but then I just wanted to close it down badly.
The jokes were really funny at times and Adam Sandler never seems to disappoint you when it comes to comedy. Jennifer Aniston is a perfect accomplice to him in this comedy. She is one of the best comic actors in Hollywood, thanks to the TV series Friends.
It a feature film but a very short one. I felt like I saw a short film when I finished watching it.
Everything is normal in this film when it comes to technical aspects. Right from Direction to editing to cinematography, everything is normal. Nothing much to boast or mention specially about that here. However, just for the heck of it. a special mention should go to the climax car chase scene which is very well shot.
The first half of the film is good but what went wrong with this film was when the second half begins.
I think the writer James Vanderbilt was very motivated when he wrote the first half but then lost his motivation after he crossed thirty pages.
There are really clever one liners in the first half while second half is a typical American Couple movie where you just watch it because you have already started the movie.
I lost it when the logically funny film became illogical when a war veteran takes out a knife form a dead body and later puts it back in. This is the moment when film went into the weird and abnormal zone. It never recovered after that.
If the film had been a situational comedy like it was initially and wouldn't try to do force comedy then it would have been better.
No other actor had anything to do in the film except Sandler and Aniston. Sandler produced the film so that explains it.
I wouldn't recommend it highly but you can watch it if you are on a flight and have nothing else to do. It will give you a good 90 minutes of comic peace.
But man, I was literally expecting a cameo from Rob Schneider because I have developed a habit of seeing him in every Sandler movie, even if for a minute. I would have increased the rating of the film if he was there.
Barfly (1987)
You can live without watching it actually !!
There are so much hoopla around this film that i decided to watch it.
OH my god what a terrible disappointment this movie was.
Mickey Rourke they said acted good. However as far as my opinion about the film is concerned I would say that, he acted really bad. I agree with Bukowski here. He didn't like him either.
At times he was trying to too hard.
Faye Dunaway was good and the other girl Alice Krige also did well.
Dunaway had much to do while other girl didn't.
Bukowski is a good writer and he writes with natural flair but writing movies is not something that would come naturally to anyone.
The story is not that good, infact I would say there was no story. It was a vanity film made on Bukowski based on his whims and fantasies and little bit from his life.
Now people might say that I didn't get the film.
To which I would say that why would anyone make a film which is difficult to understand or too intellectual for anyone.
I read great reviews about it and I am not sure if I am missing anything about the film.
But I am sure about one thing, I hell didn't like the film.
The direction was average and it felt that at times director was too lazy to direct or make the film or lost the motivation to make it midway.
No special camerawork and no other thing that you would want to note.
Nothing special about the film except that after watching it you would want to drink neat whiskey and burn your lungs with lots of cigarette smoke.
Watch it only if you are a fan of Bukowski.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001)
Despite haters hating it, one of the best films of Indian Cinema.
I have a personal connection with this film.
This was the first film in My very first computer and I had watched it multiple times as it was the only movie in my computer.
The casting was near perfect with Over acting from Kareena Kapoor and Hritik Roshan trying very hard to match up with the acting powers of two legends.
The film belongs to Karan Johar and the hero of the film is Shahrukh Khan, everyone else is just supporting actor in the film.
The highlights of the film are SRK entry, probably the best short entry of Indian Cinema, SRK-Kajol scenes together, Every scene of them together is a gem, Amitabh's final Climax performance which removes your whatever doubts left that why Bachchan is one of the greatest Actors who ever walked on Earth.
The songs are fabulous and are composed mostly by Jatin Lalit and Aadesh Srivastava. They have been chart busters upon release.
I love the back ground Music and aalaps in Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra Films. It takes you into different dimensions. The aalaps in the film on the theme songs are given by Sonu Nigam and Lata Mangeshkar.
The scene where SRK and Hritik meets first time after Hritik has grown up is impeccably choreographed with A slow theme song behind. I love that scene.
Karan Johar as director is a master of emotional scenes, and also romantic scenes. To me he is better than Aditya Chopra in direction.
The story of the film is very simple and it is probably the most simple story line stretched into 4 hours of the film. Yes, the length of the film is a bit too much and the editor is responsible for that. Editing work here is not that good and I seriously think so many scenes could have been cut out.
The Kareena Kapoor portions could have been completely eliminated and it wouldn't make much difference to the film. She must have only been taken because she was the hottest celebrity at that time.
The story comprises of an adopted son of a billionaire leaving everything to marry the girl he loves and is reunited after ten years by his younger brother who wants to mend relationship between his father and brother.
It may sound a little shakespearish and it is a little. But all and all the product is good and was worthy of being called a blockbuster.
This is the film I want my foreign friends to watch as an introduction to Indian Cinema.
Pari (2018)
Anushka Surprises with Great acting. Movies works for one time.
Pari is a movie which will not scare not you except for a few foley sound effects here and there.
The movie has some great cast and performance of everyone including the character artists is very good.
If there is one thing that I find very commendable about the director of this film then it is his ability to get the best from his actors.
Editing by Manas Mittal is good but in second half film loses the grip. I think this is more of a story problem rather than editing one.
Camera work is ok and not exceptional. The film looks heavily graded and natural tone in the frames is missing most of the times.
The artwork is good and I believe that except for few places, most of the film has been shot in real locations. It gives the film the edge and sometimes makes you wonder where the camera was placed. The dungeon where Professor Qasim Ali performs his experiments was quite well made.
Coming to Acting. I think this is Anushka's best performance till date. I am a big fan of her but I never watch her films because I cannot see that much beauty on one single screen. I saw few scenes from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Jab Harry met Sejal and she had performed quite poorly. I didn't watch it because I didn't want to lose my love for her. She is natural in this role. Only if the film's structure had been good, she would have won many awards.
Parambrata Chatterjee and Rajat Kapoor are simply good and there is no doubt otherwise. They are good in every role. The surprise was Ritabhari Chakraborty who acted with extreme confidence and it wouldn't be wrong to say that she acted as one of the lead in the film and it felt like she was one.
Coming to Story. This is where the film falls. The first half is good and you want to believe that in the second half it will elevate more, and more explanation will be given and along with it a better story will be revealed.
Doesn't happen.
In fact, the second half is where the film leaves a bad impression.
The writer couldn't create a world in which horror would occur.
Pari was found in chains when they found him. Her body creates venom every month and she has to releases it on someone else's body. Mostly it was dogs. If she was in chains, how was she doing it earlier? I love dogs so I hated that.
Pari would occasionally see her smiling wounded self occasionally in the film. Was that the devil inside her or was he hallucinating? That was never explained.
One more thing that they never explained was why she craved for Nail cutter so much. Quite a fetish she had for cutting nails.
Was she aware of her powers or not aware of her powers?
In the end, she starts killing people and seemed devoid of direct human emotions. Later she shows that when Piyali, fiance of Arnab, helps her in delivery.
The entire character of Pari was badly created. There were no guidelines to what she could do and the rules of demons were also not clear.
If you are making a horror film, then you can't just do anything with it.
There have to be some ground rules for ghosts as well. There has to be a logical sphere beyond which even they cannot go. A ghost who kills people by killing them hands won't suddenly start throwing fire from their hand.
The character of Pari does not have any ground rules. You don't understand her. You don't understand her capabilities. After a while, it seems she can do anything - fly in the air, jump like Spiderman, the only thing remaining was her turning into Thor.
It was an ok film. A fine one time watch. But don't expect too much.
