I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009)
Stunningly awful....
...are the the only words that came to mind. Yeah, I went to go see it despite a nearly universal crushing blow that was delivered by the film critic industry.
But it really is that bad. It should come as no surprise, based on the movie trailer, that a high school brainiac confesses his true love to the prettiest cheerleader in high school during his valedictorian speech. During his initial speech, he makes an attempt of a joke that is intended to fall flat.
The rest of the movie is just that, though. When it DOES try to make a joke, it falls flat. Also, the rest of the movie plays out like a real high school geek's dream of how things might turn out. The girl comes over with her friends (initially as a joke) and they all wind up getting caught up in crazy situations that is supposed to make the geek realize that there should be fun in your life when you're young and to make the pretty young thing realize that there is more to love. It's a movie that sincerely tries to show that it has a heart, but it truly doesn't and even our main character doesn't come across as wholly sympathetic either.
Sadly, it doesn't play out realistically or comedically. It plays out more like a series of sketches with a "romantic teen comedy" somehow loosely stringing it together like wet pasta noodles restraining a felon.
It's horrible, it's unfunny, and I don't buy how the girls manage to remain hanging around with our high school geek and his friend. Also...SPOILER ALERT...the sexual situation that his friend finds himself later in is so ridiculously unreal that I almost yelled out, "Oh, come on!" just when I thought that it couldn't get any worse. It might have come across as funny to a 7th grader, but certainly not to anyone who loved Hughes' teen comedies of the 80s.
Skip the movie...skip the DVD...man, even skip the RENTAL. It's...NOT...WORTH...YOUR...TIME!
Camp Rock (2008)
This movie was rockin'!
My children and I were lucky enough to see this movie a little early due to the fact that it was on Disney On Demand. Good entertaining movie for the family. I gave it 4 stars, because I thought it was a little short and could have used a little more substance to the story. It seemed to have just raced through to the end. I don't want to ruin the story for everyone, but the music was good and there were some cute parts. Flour in the face, slipping on the floor and the poor brother with his birdhouse obsession. I was disappointed that the other Jonas brothers weren't part of the main story, but rather made cameo appearances. Mitchie and Shane were really cute together and I am glad she put him in his place, because he started out as a real jerk. I loved their duet together at the end where they put their two different songs together and made it flow as one. The end was surpising to my children because the person who won the contest was not who they thought it would be. All in all the kids loved the music and really enjoyed the movie and already they have watched it over and over. We will definitely be getting the DVD when it comes out.
The Telling (2009)
Seriously...
Here it goes, after I heard about our local movie store was closing I decided to go and buy movies because they were 50% - 70% off the original price. This movie was one of the many movies I bought, I really didn't have much to do today so I watched it.....it sucked! I feel really bad to say that because I really like Bridget and Holly. I'm also a huge fan of "The Girls Next Door"and that's another reason why I picked this movie up. The acting was cheesy, the production was lame and the film quality was crappy! This is a movie that is going to never be played again and just sit in my movie cabinet. Save your money and brain cells.
The Last Song (2010)
This was the best movie ever!
Fantastic movie! Miley Cyrus is a super actress and she really showed it in this movie. I really liked how she got into character, and showed a special bond with the fellow actors. She also showed movies can be fun without the weighing down of conventions or stereotypes. Many people dislike this movie because it stars Miley Cyrus, but people are going to like this movie, so them giving this movie a 1 is pointless because there are Miley fans who are going to watch it and buy it on DVD. So them hating on this movie is pointless! I think that if in your mind you are looking for a good time and some fun, then you will be watching the right movie when you see this flick. 10/10 ! :)
Backwoods (2008)
Great movie! You won't be disappointed :)
I was really surprised by this movie. It's very difficult to find a good horror movie that focuses on one plot and stays on track ( without being distracted by the blonde naked victim running through the woods ) This movie doesn't waste any time, it goes right to the action . Haylie Duff is a wonderful, great actress that fitted in the role perfectly. It's unexpectedly better than the trailers (as it often happens with good movies). My husband and I both thought this was one of the best movies we've seen in a long time. Haylie Duff was meant for this role! The plot was. There was no boring pause in it like you find in some movies. I would recommend this DVD to everyone.
Bandslam (2009)
"Bandslam" hits some really good notes but misses others...
Again, this was another movie I happened to pick up. It's not a bad movie but it slacks at the part to keep the viewers interest. The acting was incredible! It may be the story line, or the plot but I can't be sure. But it starts good, and then goes downhill, the back up, then back down. It's like being on a roller-coaster.Pretty much the only reason I rented it was because of the "Vanessa Hudgens" name and the fact that I thought my younger sister and I would enjoy watching it together. Pretty faces and good music...what can go wrong, right? Unfortunately, the film fell short of even those somewhat less than lofty expectations. Bandslam hits some really good notes but misses others. It's a pretty decent movie overall but I wouldn't count on this movie to be "all the way entertaining." So for that 3/5
