Girls State (2024)
Similar to Boy State with many differences
Can we please keep getting these documentaries?! I don't care if we revisit Boys or Girls state, I just need more! I LOVED Boys State from 2020, and so when I discovered this was coming, I instantly added it to the watchlist. Furthermore, when I learned earlier that it was released today I knew right away what I'd be watching tonight.
Girls State has many similarities to Boys State but many differences! For the most part, I felt like it was pretty neutral to politics. You get a good mix of girls from both political platforms, I do think the documentary leans a little more left, but I think that's also just the nature of the movie industry in general. One thing I've found to love about these docs though is regardless of the person's political affiliation, I'm always so invested in their story!
This one really had me invested in Emily and Nisha, though there wasn't one girl I disliked following. The doc points out a lot of problems with gender inequality and does it in a way that doesn't put down either gender, but acknowledges the issue and looks to the future of women leadership optimistically.
There are female-empowerment speeches that were better than anything you'd hear in the Barbie movie, and they're literally from high schoolers. I may not have agreed with every topic discussed, but just like Boys State, I was glued to my screen from the start. Please seek both these documentaries out!!!
Community: Intro to Felt Surrogacy (2013)
Someone had to say something
I don't know if this is such a low rated episode because of the season 4 haters or what but I thought this episode was so funny! Maybe it's because I've always thought Muppet humor is hilarious and this episode reminded me of it for obvious reasons! The cast can't sing very well, but you better believe I got emotional at the campfire song they sang about their secrets. This is one of the only episodes that felt like normal Community to me. At times it felt a little forced, but overall I enjoyed it!
Song of the Sea (2014)
What are you waiting for?!
If this movie is in your watchlist WATCH IT. If it's not, still watch it. If you like animated films WATCH IT! If you're wanting an emotional movie with heart to it, WATCH IT!
This movie was nominated for Best Animated Picture for the year 2014, and it lost to Big Hero 6, which is hard for me to comprehend. This movie is so powerful, original, beautiful, and touching. The characters cry... A LOT! You feel it. And it makes you want to cry.
This movie has been on my watchlist since 2014 but I've neglected it until now for my Decade in Review series on YouTube. I'm so glad I finally watched it. Please do yourself a favor and watch this film. I loved it... way more than I thought I would.
The Wife (2017)
A nightmare I'd never want to live in
The plot initially intrigued me. I was wondering if it'd be similar at all to Wild Strawberries because that movie has a similar plot. They're not similar, but both great movies. This movie isn't what I was expecting. In fact to be honest, it's a nightmare I'd never want to live in. Glenn Close did great as well as her co-Star Jonathan Pryce (he hasn't gotten too much recognition). I wasn't a big fan of Max Irons, the actor who played the son. Just didn't dig the performance or the character. It's a slower film, but when you're in the mood for a slower paced movie, watch this one!
Watership Down (1978)
Read the Book
I have been wanting to see this movie for several years now, but I wanted to read the book before watching the movie. I finished the book this week and finally viewed Watership Down for the first time. I have mixed feelings. I'll start with the pros:
- A lot of neat animation, including the portrayal of the Black Rabbit of Inle. That was a good interpretation from the book.
- The voice acting is good 👍
- The conversation is very real, I noticed several moments where rabbits are speaking over each other which I felt was more realistic dialogue.
Here are the problems I had with this movie:
- The biggest problem: I didn't care for any of the rabbits. In the book I loved all of them. Even if a side character died, I had become so invested in these rabbits' lives that it was still super sad to experience. The movie is very fast paced, and while it gets the main parts of the book, it missed out on the emotion. The final chapters in the book were so suspenseful, and the movie brushes over it. I'm specifically frustrated with the final confrontation with Woundwort, I wish that was handled better in the movie. It just shows the dog running towards him and then we hear a narrator take over the movie and the film skips ahead to Hazel's death. I just had no feelings towards the movie characters. Book Bigwig was a freakin beast. Movie Bigwig was just a rabbit. Hazel was the brave and selfless leader, the movie Hazel was kind of the leader? I was just bothered with how little I cared for these rabbits.
- The animation is pretty outdated
- The music feels super outdated.
Final Thoughts: It's a god movie that is adventurous, but not nearly as adventurous as it could have been. It's violent, but not as violent as I expected it to be. Regardless of whether or not you've seen it, read the book. It's amazing.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
The Most Serious MCU Movie
While this movie definitely ties in with the other MCU movies, it has always felt the most distant from the universe, and even on a rewatch I still feel that way. While most of the movies in this universe are action packed with a bit of humor, this movie takes itself very serious.
My biggest complaints are the visual effects and the way the Hulk looks. His mouth is so weird looking! I also didn't care much for Liv Tyler's performance. This movie opens up a can of worms to things that are never answered, such as what ever happened to Betty in future Marvel films? I understand that this is only the 2nd MCU movie, so it makes complete sense that they didn't know for sure what direction they were going in yet.
It's a fun movie, just pretty dated and the least like any other MCU movie. But at lease it's better than the 2003 movie!
8½ (1963)
I'm going to be honest
This is not a bad movie, and nor is a 6/10 a harsh rating. Yeah, to me it's not a perfect 10/10 or really close to it. I didn't dislike this movie, I just felt indifferent to it. There is more good than bad though, so that's always nice! The best thing about this movie is some of its iconic shots, such as the opening dream sequence or the final scene. I liked how this director is having a hard time mixing reality and memories, a creative plot. But overall I was just bored.
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)
Frank Capra: the King of Feel-Good Movies
Capra does it again. This is my 5th film I've seen from Frank Capra, and without fail he is always successful in making his audience feel so great inside!
Mr Deeds Goes to Town is a mixture of Comedy and Drama. There are some very funny scenes in this movie, but some very sad ones too. All the performances are amazing! If you're a fan of Capra, make sure to add this movie to the watchlist!
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
The movie is amazing!
The movie is absolutely incredible! All the performances are amazing, especially James McAvoy's, Michael Fasbander's, and Jennifer Lawrence's. If you haven't seen any of the other X-Men movies, then I highly recommend checking them out before watching this one because you will appreciate Days of Future Past so much more. Not only is the movie the best in the X-Men saga, but it is also funny, suspenseful, gripping, and action-packed. I absolutely love the storyline in this film as well.
One of my favorite scenes of this movie was Quicksilver's. Is there anyone who does not like the guy?! Because he is amazing! I just wish they could use the same actor for The Avengers Age of Ultron.
Mystique, my favorite mutant, has a huge role and so that's amazing.
In the final scene when Mystique is deciding whether to kill Trask or not, and the camera is switching between past and future: best part in my opinion. I loved how the movie plays slow music for the scene, it means so much in such little of a tune. I loved X-Men and I have already seen it twice! I don't plan at stopping at that either... 10/10 Stars! :)
Source Code (2011)
The Source Code is AMAZING
So Source Code... a great movie with the one and only... Jake Gyllenhaal! His performance in this movie was excellent(as usual). BUT I'll get to that in a second. MOVIE INFO The movie Source Code came out into theaters on April 1, 2011 and I actually saw it in the theaters. "An action thriller centered on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train." -imdb. This movie is rated PG-13 with a running time of one hour thirty-three minutes. Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon). Starring Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko), Michelle Monaghan (Eagle Eye), Vera Farminga (The Departed), and Jeffrey Wright (Casino Royale). REVIEW I really enjoyed this film! It had a mixture of thriller, sci-fi, mystery, and even a little bit of romance! (But if we be honest here, every film nowadays has a bit of romance). If you like the kind of movies that keep you on the edge of your seat because you just want to find out what the secret is, what the answer is to the mystery, then you will really enjoy this film! Jake Gyllenhaal plays Colter. He keeps waking up on the same train, and he only has eight minutes to stop a bomb that is on the train. So the whole entire movie he is searching for the bomb, and especially who is in charge of the bomb. That's where the whole "edge of the seat" experience comes in. The whole movie you start guessing who is behind the problem, who is really in charge of the bomb that will be exploding. I myself had quite a few thoughts on who it could be, but of course I was wrong. It's a great story plot! Did it leave up to its expectations? Yes! Now the first time I saw this in the theaters I didn't like it as much, only because I had such high expectations for it and so I was expecting the next best movie! But after watching it almost two years after the release for the first time since then, I really enjoyed it! I'm always into a movie with Jake Gyllenhaal because I just think he is an amazing actor. He played his roll excellent. Think about it. It'd be hard to play someone waking up on a train, not even knowing who you are, and trying to stop a bomb you know nothing about! But he nailed the roll and, like always, delivered a great performance. Michelle Monaghan was also very good for her roll. It's not like she was so amazing that I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the roll, no. I could imagine several other actresses that would've also delivered good performances, but she was great! I really liked her character, Christina, too! *spoilers* When you finally got to find out who the person was that was behind the bomb attack on the train, I must honestly say I was sort of let down. It's not because of the fact that "the guy who dropped his wallet" was the one, it was the way they presented it. Jake Gyllenhaal calls the guy's number and finds out it is him, and then____ nothing. He confronts the guy turns off the bomb and well that's the end. Everyone is saved. I just wish that when you find out who the person ended up being, they would've made it more dramatic. I wish Jones would've set the tone for that part. That is my only complaint. Overall Grade: B+ I give it a B+ because it was a great film and I really enjoyed it all, but just the way they showed the audience who the person was, wasn't enough for me. I felt that we've been waiting to see that part the whole movie, in fact ever since we saw the first trailer, and then when we actually did find out, it was just like "oh. that guy..." I just wish it would've lead up to the mystery bad guy in a better, more dramatic way. I hope you all enjoyed this review! I recommend this movie big time! Thanks for reading!
