The Midnight Meat Train (2008)
Disappointing, but Vinnie done well.
I had high hopes for this horror flick, and was drawn in by the buzz, but unfortunately I was disappointed.
I felt like this film could have been so much more, it had great potential, but the story wasn't expanded enough. They took parts from Clive Barkers story but didn't explain or elaborate on them.
The other annoying thing was the special effects. I hate CGI blood, it makes the gore look unrealistic to me, which ruined the violent scenes as they all looked computerised. Some of the close up mutilation scenes were decent though and the scenes towards the end in the train carriage with all the bodies hanging on meat hooks was quite impressive too, so not all bad.
The acting was solid throughout.....except for Quinton "This is a citizens arrest" Rampage Jackson. He only had a couple of lines, but couldn't deliver them at all. Vinnie Jones however was really good in this film, I thought he really pulled off the part well. He was menacing, frightening, and intense. I would love to see him play another similar role in a better movie, I think a sadistic serial killer role is his calling!
The other characters held up well too, it wasn't a terrible film, I just feel it didn't live up to it's potential.
Cheers
The Crew (2008)
Poor film
This was a very poor attempt at a gangster flick. The characters were unconvincing. The acting was poor, and in the case of Scott Williams was over the top and unbelievable in places.
I thought Stephen Graham would salvage the film but his part was too small.
The story line was disjointed and full of clichés. And when it tried a Ritchie-esk climax it fell flat on it's face.
The ending was pointless and unfulfilling.
Overall very disappointing. If you want a British gangster flick that isn't based in London then watch "Going off Big Time" it's a great film.
In Bruges (2008)
Superb
I'm no critic so excuse me if my review is not as eloquent and insightful as some, but I do enjoy giving my views on films.
In Bruges was a complete surprise to me. I didn't really expect to like it as much as I did. I hadn't heard much about the film before I watched it and found myself enjoying every minute of it.
I have never been a big Colin Farrel fan but he was spot on in this film, he managed to balance the emotions of the character superbly between humour, and despair, agitation and excitement, innocence and guilt. He made the character interesting and believable. Brendan Gleeson wouldn't seem like an obvious choice to pair him up with but as they bounce Witticisms off each other the comedy is very funny. Ralp Fiennes cold icy character added another enjoyable dimension to the film.
The dialog was excellent from start to finish. The sound track strangely, worked as well, it was almost haunting and combined with the medieval backdrop of Bruges created a good atmosphere.
The ending was exciting and rewarding.
Overall I think this is a superb film.
Cheers
Righteous Kill (2008)
Disappointing
Why these 2 worldclass actors choose this weak flimsy script for there long awaited reunion is beyond me.
Mabe I was expecting too much, I was hoping for an epic, a classic, a piece of cinema gold, but instead I got a wash out.
Overall the acting was of a low calibre, not that De Niro or Pacino could do much with this script as it was so bad. They tried to make the dialogue work but it seemed to lack any imagination, it was tired and boring.
The story line was hard to follow for the first 30 minutes and made viewing more of a chore, sat there with a frown trying to work out what the hell was going on. After a while I understood and could see the plot clearly and also the twist. It was not hard to work out and was predictable and unimaginative.
Also I didn't understand what the point of Carla Gugino's character was. It had virtually zero impact on the story line and it may as well not have been part of the film.
This film will be and should be quickly forgotten.
