Time Trap (2017)
Garbage
This is almost unwatchable. Terrible script, terrible acting. It is only saved by the two hot girls.
If you like soap operas with a sci fi twist, watch. Otherwise absolutely skip. 6.5/10 is amazing to me. I no longer trust IMDB
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)
Exhausting, confusing, unenjoyable
I am a fan of Black Mirror, but this show/movie was not good. The problem is the entertainment is meant to be the interactiveness, so the story itself is extremely lacking. In fact, if you go through all the scanarios you find that many of them cannot coexist at the same time, which makes you question what the actual plot is at all. And I suppose that is the point, there is no real plot unless you choose a plot, but even as you choose, the plots don't necessarily make sense and end abruptly at times. So then you must backtrack and reselect the story you want to chase; but then that one turns out to be a joke as well, so you are forced restart. It's just exhausting, and I never found any of the selectable stories satisfying. And once you start reexamining the options you missed, the runntime of 1.5 hours turns into much more as well and leaves kind of a befuddled mess and waste of time.
I hated this and do did my wife. I only give it a star above the minimum because it is an original concept, just not a good one at all in this format.
About Time (2013)
Don't let the other reviews fool you, this is just another love story movie.
I came across this movie after a Google search of "movies like Coherence and Primer" led me to a website that listed 10 movies supposedly similar with this one being the only one on the list I hadn't seen before. If you've seen those movies before then you'll know my reaction to that website's recommendation...
WHAT?!?
This movie is nothing like those movies, except--and this is a stretch--one small component that makes this movie a unique love story. Other than that one thing, this movie is exactly what it looks like: a sappy multi-level love story. Many reviewers are saying "but wait for the big twist!" What movie did they see that I apparently missed, because there is no big twist in this movie except Margot Robbie coming out of nowhere to be a co-star?
Overall if you like movies like the Notebook then you'll enjoy this movie. If you're looking for a mind-bending experience by the likes of Primer or Coherence, you are in for a total shock in the most boring fashion unless you've read my review and moved on ahead of time.
Ex Machina (2014)
Lonely men rated this high
It's so hard to find new and good movies these days. I had high hopes for this one, and it started off interestingly enough. The characters were intriguing and so was the landscape. In fact, I actually reminisced about the game "Portal" when I was inside of the billionaire's house.
Ultimately though, the movie was predictable and quite silly. I am very surprised to see all of the positive reviews here. I almost think that maybe many of these reviews are from lonely men who found the robot attractive, just as the lead male role did. And I'm not even kidding about that. She did draw you in, and I can see how many males that are into the cyber thing found her extremely alluring and gave this a 10. It was not a 10 sadly. A 5, maybe 6, at best.
The Loft (2014)
I mean honestly, this movie is pretty bad
You probably won't stop this show halfway through, but only because you'll be convinced the twists and turns will eventually satisfy your time invested. But it definitely didn't happen for me. I probably watched the movie clock tick on my DVD player more than I watched the actual show, so maybe my review is a moot one.
The plot isn't terrible, although certainly had opportunity to be even more compelling. What is really bad about this movie is 1. the evolution of relationships, 2. the acting (some of them were just horrible), 3. the ridiculous characters (especially the wives), and 4. the absurd reasoning almost all of the characters exhibit.
Overall it wasn't worth watching IMO. 2/10
Somebody's Gotta Do It (2014)
Just OK, but not nearly as entertaining as Dirty Jobs
CNN so far has a bad habit of taking interesting shows and making them somewhat boring. The same happened with Bourdain as well. Somebody's Gotta Do It is similar to Part's Unknown in that the focus is about interviewing everyday people living in environments that are different than what the average person experiences. CNN takes the emphasis out of the actual jobs in Rowe's new show, and instead focuses more on the human beings that do the job. That's fine if you are entertained by that, but the predicaments Mike got himself in during Dirty Jobs and the resulting hilarity that ensued from the very witty Rowe is nearly nonexistent in Somebody's Gotta Do it. I find that very unfortunate as Rowe truly is one of the funniest TV personalities there is.
The other problem I have with this show compared to DJ is that the jobs on this show aren't really that dirty (nor are they supposed to be). But, that was half the fun of DJ—watching Mike climb 200ft down the inside of a bridge no larger than 5 feet in diameter, crawl inside tight spaces inside an old ship, or work at a potato chip factory. You'll get almost none of that intrigue in Somebody's Gotta Do It, which I think is a shame.
I found myself often fast forwarding through a lot of the interviews, and some particular bits (such as the sign painter in Austin, the tiny house guy in Luling, and La Reve in Vegas) I just turned off completely. I'm glad Mike is getting another shot at a TV show as a non-narrator, but I personally find this show a far cry from Dirty Jobs as far as entertainment value goes.
Gone Girl (2014)
Overrated, simply boring to a party of two.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but my wife and I both agreed this movie was overrated. Sure, Fincher is a good director, and fans of the book should like the movie. But the story is dull, and the development is dull, and the whole thing from top to bottom is dull. The movie demands you be intrigued because the plot starts interestingly enough, which is kind of a shame considering how it plays out, but the intrigue is still there when the film stops rolling. Not in a good way though.
I will say this movie developed very similarly to Shutter Island. If you liked that one, you should like this movie. They aren't similar in any regard plot-wise, just how they build suspension and kind of mellow out with a pretty predictable twist or two. Everyone is saying this movie has so many plot twists that you don't see coming? OK maybe the world has gotten really dumb, but the plot twists aren't really twists in my opinion, they are more like changes of direction and not disconcerting to a viewer. If I am driving and I come upon a twist in the road it's pretty freaky; if I have to suddenly come to a stop sign and take a right instead of go straight, I don't freak out at all, just say "well shoot, not what I was expecting, but at least I was prepared." That may be a terrible analogy, but I hope you get the point. Nothing in this movie should freak a normal human being out.
Overall I'm surprised so many like this movie thus far, so I guess I have to recommend watching it and making up your own mind. But for me and my wife personally, and I love Fincher movies, this was totally a waste of time for both of us.
Only like if you agree with me after you've seen the movie. A difference of opinion makes the world go round.
Sons of Anarchy (2008)
This show is terrible
I guess folks that love network TV and can't or haven't ever watched an HBO or AMC series rank this show pretty high because maybe it's all they have for comparison. That being said, this show is rotten. The acting may be the worst of any show I've ever seen that is rated above an 8.5 on IMDb with this number of ratings. The plot is pretty silly all around. Maybe it picks up in the third season, but I couldn't make it that far. Who would...
If you want real drama series that is amazing, watch the Wire, Sopranos, Breaking Bad or hell, even Prison Break. This show is a hot mess.
Oculus (2013)
I love horror movies and I thought this was rubbish.
1. The acting was very bad for starters. The girl was extremely over-the-top and the guy just another mediocre actor that probably got a shoe in to Hollywood because of his past modeling career or sheer good looks.
2. Illogical. There was very little premise as to why either of these characters--with renewed lives at the start of the movie--would venture back into the creepy-mirror-infused lifestyles they had as children. Don't get me wrong they made a pact when they were 10 years old to return to this *event* (shall we call it), but again, there was no logic to actually following through with the promises as youths. I certainly wouldn't have.
3. Disturbing (without any entertainment value). I love a well done horror movie with disturbances, but I found this movie attempting to be disturbing without actually keeping you on the edge of your seat. I was rarely--if ever--freaked out by any scenes as they weren't really frightening. But the core of the premise was dark, disturbing, and completely dumb. I kept expecting more but ultimately wanted this movie to be over as the "more" I was expecting only came when the credits rolled.
Usually I am the guy to disagree with the single BAD review when a move on IMDb gets a 6.9 rating; in this instance I am that guy though and therefore thought it was worth writing a review as I think some people will find this movie pretty tasteless. I am shocked by the IMDb reviews as other movie sites are quite harsh on this one as well.
Jesus Camp (2006)
truly disgusting
having come from a very religious family that taught me from birth that Christianity was the only way to live a true and meaningful life, i really was able to relate to this movie. now, i am not a Christian anymore, and i do in fact disrespect my family for ever imposing these idiotic beliefs and consequences upon me, but to break free from such an upbringing is more difficult than you can imagine. for that reason, this movie was painful to watch, because most of these children are going to grow up to be the naive and ignorant clones of their parents.
as another user put it, this is "child abuse" in my mind, never giving children a chance to choose a path for themselves. these kids will be intolerable adults all due to obsessed and downright brainwashed parents. there truly should be some type of punishment for mental abuse to a child on this level. there are so many points during this movie that will remind you of associations with witchcraft, demonic rituals, and oddly enough, even Muslim undertones (speaking in tongues with what sounds like the language of arabic).
the most profound and disturbing thing i will say about this movie, and i've believed this all of my life since i've strayed away from Christianity, brainwash on this level has only been repeated once in history, and it involved a man named Hitler. i feel for the children in this movie, and i despise the parents. if you're a parent who has seen and believed that what goes on in this movie is acceptable, please, for the love of your own god, do not ever have children. the world will be better off.
Kung Fu Panda (2008)
Really wasn't that good
I will admit, I am not a fan of animated films, but this movie was not very entertaining even considering that. The story was silly and the jokes bland, and the progression of the story was very lazy. The only thing that I thought that was cool about the movie were the action sequences with the bad "guy" in the movie. Otherwise, this movie was certainly worth passing, unless you have children that are entertained by just about anything animated. Jack Black is typically very funny to me, and this character even suited his voice, yet still the silly and mundane story line just wasn't enough to keep my attention. You will enjoy a few laughs here and there, but in the end I think it is likely you will feel relatively dissatisfied altogether.
Redbelt (2008)
not as good as expected
i am a big fan of mamet. i thought the Spanish prisoner was really brilliant, and you know a guy writes well when he combines a great story with really terrible acting and yet it is still very entertaining. "prisoner" was. spartan was also an excellent film, but with good acting.
redbelt is mediocre at best. i think the trailers for this movie make it seem much cooler, like by at least 10 degrees, than the movie actually is. i don't know why but the plot to this movie is actually relatively simple although the trailer made me think otherwise (complicated plotting is why i like mamet), and truthfully this plot was just plain silly.
so the movie kind of gets into the plot for the while and then the ending is just abysmal at best. i felt like there was no closure, and all of the acting was out of balance and there was no connection at all to the plot of the movie, really. this is one of those that i wished i had skipped about halfway through the movie, however the entire time i was expecting a turnaround. it never came. 5/10 at best.
