Titus (1999)
pretty okay
as i watched the movie, huddled up on the sofa in my pjs, the first word that came to mind was: brutal.
so this is shakespeare when he's PMS-ing. i hadn't known he was into the goop and gore until i watched Titus, i had (mistakenly) thought he was Mr Romance. after all, there was Romeo and Juliet, and i knew there were some plays like Julius Caesar and Macbeth where everything wasn't all flowers and candy, but this one really took me by surprise.
picture this: i'm eating popcorn, staring at the screen, transfixed, as a girl with twigs for hands and who has NO! TONGUE! moans and tries to speak. i was horrified.
but besides the violence and the sick images that this film is now firmly associated with in my mind, i have to admit it was good. good actors, great plot. besides the old english that made me want to go, "huh?" every five seconds, i thought the movie was great. the characters were well-developed, and the acting was pretty passable. there was a good direction of the movie, and parts where i expected it to be boring didn't drag on and spoil the movie.
anyone who is a fan of shakespear should really catch this.
Gormenghast (2000)
amazingly interesting.
Gormenghast...once i heard the title of the mini-series, i wanted to laugh. what an awful name! at first glance, it appeared to be terribly confusing, what with the birth of the new heir, the kitchens, Steerpike, his manipulative ways...
But after watching it, i have to admit the show is great. Jonathan Rhys Meyers gives a stunning performance as the shewrd, cunning kitchen boy Steerpike, who slowly worms his way to the top by murdering anyone who gets in his way.
for me, the most impressive scene had to be in the last episode, when he nearly gets killed by the twin sisters Cora and Clarice, who sets up a trap for him. the rage and horror mixed on his face, together with the obvious sense of relief he displays is amazing. and when he did his little 'insane dance' around the skeletons of the twins - now that was scary. there was a general atmosphere of madness that somehow managed to be conveyed, without the usual cliches that get in the way. just pure, sheer madness.
it's a wonderful mini-series. too bad there isn't a sequel to it. and check out the set designs, they give Gormenghast a very realistic feel.
Dinotopia (2002)
surprisingly good
the movie was way beyond my expectations for a whole 'fiction, fantasy' gene. considering they were talking about dinos here, i had my doubts about it. but the movie spoke for itself, and managed to sastify me. the acting was good, the lines were belieable, and the plot came together quite well. i would have never expected this much from what i first deemed a show for the "kiddies".
on the whole, i enjoyed it a lot, and i'm hoping there will be a sequel to this. a very good watch.
