Very weird but only slightly wonderful, the best that can be said of it is that it has its moments, but like many TV adaptions of literary classics it sacrifices a lot of the original material to survive the transition to screen.
That said, the cast (with one or two exceptions) performed magnificently, especially Celia Imrie, John Sessions and the evergreen Christopher Lee, whose fight with Richard Griffiths in the second episode was one of the highlights of the series.
Episode three was a real chuckle, and a pleasure to see so many great British comedy character actors on screen in one go.
On the minus side, I found the story dragged at times, and I felt there was insufficent examination of the characters' motives and reasons. Why, for instance, did Flay & Swelter hate each other so much?
These aside, "Gormenghast" is a good portent that the BBC will continue to produce fine costume drama in the new century.
Maybe even "Titus Alone" ....?
