Another Earth (2011)
Another Disappointment
I have been anticipating to see this film for a few months now. I finally dragged a few friends with me to see it and I must say I am completely let down. The film would have been better if there was no secondary Earth. The whole time you are thinking "when do we get to see this Earth like planet?". You follow this wonderful story premise but boring and poor execution instead. The pacing was extremely slow, the cinematography was extremely bland. There was no continuity with the shots and the color. The whole film has a bland hand held look and then you have one shot of her walking on the beach (POSTER SHOT!) and it's more colorful yet looks like it had a poorly done color overly contrasting effect over it and there's a voice over that came out of nowhere. Who places a voice over in the middle of the film? The acting was poor and not realistic, the dialog was not natural at all, you get bored following this girl. The story has potential but sadly it failed. All in all I want my $13 back.
Shutter Island (2010)
Would this have gotten a 10/10 if it was made 30 years ago?
When I initially watched this film last night I wanted to say "this is an awful film, something is missing from it." There comes a time when it is best to take a step back from the movie, and think it over, over night. The more I think about this film the more I actually like it. This movie has all of the ingredients to make a wonderful and memorable film. The direction, look, acting, story, the look of the dream sequences alone was very well done. There were parts of this film that reminded me of The Shining and other parts reminded me of a classic masterpiece. There were definitely several slow movement parts of the film which makes me wonder. With todays age, does the new technology with over blown special effects, fast pace cuts, movies that feel like a video game instead of an actual genuine story do these make us forget about what great story telling truly is? Do we forget how to sit and truly watch what's going on instead of having everything seen within the first 3 minutes? I thought this was a seamless and perfect film from beginning to end. The special effects weren't over done just to compete with who can do what. The effects worked well with the film. There were a few parts where it did get slightly redundant but then again, it was all in the mind of the paranoia. Everything actually made sense. So when you first see this movie, think about it don't instantly go to rate it a 5/10 or under etc... Think it over and you will see that the film did work together. The twist was fantastic and it wasn't like an M.Night Twist, it did not remind me of the "Village" or anything like that. This twist worked well on it's own and I thought it was beautiful how things could just start over like a clock. The trailer makes you think you are seeing a thriller/horror story but in the end... it is so much more than that. So feel free to see the movie, rent it, buy the bluray! Enjoy the film don't bash this one.
Precious (2009)
FINALLY! A Powerful and Emotinoal film for 2009....
First of all I was browsing through everyone's comments and I see some people felt that this was a stereotype/racist film. The whole time I was watching this film I did not once think this was a stereotype or racist. If this was showing a white family or Asian family or Spanish family etc... I wouldn't be surprised if people didn't see this film as racist.
This film to me was extremely powerful, and a wonderful emotional ride. The execution was outstanding, the acting was incredible, the story was fantastic. I truly hope that this film gets nominated for perhaps a best picture and acting award.
I loved looking at Precious' fantasies in order to escape her real life hell. This film is a great example showing that no matter how hard you fall, it's always up to you to pick up the pieces and to find a way to survive and move on.
All in all I say Bravo!
The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)
The Book Was better .... The Film was Choppy....
Just a quick thought look at the screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg. Her history of scripts are all TELEVISION SERIES! To me this makes sense why the script is so bland. It does feel like either a bad teenage television series and the dialog writing seems to be for soap operas. I would truly love to read these scripts. A lot of people feel that Stewart and Pattinson were the only bad actors and that everyone else was fine? I think you should see the movie again to see that nearly every character's acting were dry, stiff, staged and felt like you were watching a very bad soap opera. Could it be the Writing, Directing, Acting or a little bit of all three combined?
Unfortunately I was one of the many looking forward to seeing this Novel transcend to a film. I remember while I was reading the book saying to myself "oh wow I can't wait until they show this on Film. I think they can cut out a lot of the redundant scenes in order to make a seamless 2hr film." Well I was wrong. The Book was by far better than this film.
The half of the film was decent in order of taking scene by scene from the book but the film truly went down hill once Bella finds out that Jacob is a wolf.
From that point the acting went dry, the film was rushed and all of the great scenes in the novel especially the ones that I was truly looking forward to see in the film were GONE.
To the viewers that haven't read the book and just jumped into the film I can understand why they would truly hate this movie. It makes no sense and you can careless as to why certain things are happening.
The whole entire sequence about Edward trying to die in Italy was very weak. All it was was a rushed sequence just slapped in there because it was written in the book. The acting was dry and typical for "Vampire Dialogue" I remember hearing Dakota Fanning say how Bella is for dessert. Aside from the red contacts, the Volturi were staged, written very poorly.
I definitely would recommend reading the books and if you are a fan of the saga sure see the film, buy the Bluray, DVD, Ipod video etc... But other than that, don't waste your time on this film. There are by far better movies out there.
Just a general thought: Where is the world headed with the young Teenage viewers? What are people doing to these kids? Look at the CW for instance....
90210 (2008)
The N meets The CW and Fox has been by far long gone and out of control With Reality shows.
I am a huge fan of the original series. I grew up to that show, it was and perhaps still is a huge part of my life.
You can't judge much of a new hit Television show by the Pilot. The original 90210 series, the first few episodes had their corny lines, and things just weren't all placed together. First things first the Walsh's house had a different set in the first few episode's along with Kelly's mom being a different actress.
There's a lot to be said about this show. First of all they rushed this series to open this fall. I feel that if they had patience they could have perhaps released it in the year 2010 and well the series premiere would be on 9.02.10 but oh well, they couldn't wait two years.
A next generation television show has been created about 7ish years ago, Degrassi- The Next Generation, which is aired on The-N (a Canadian television network). I personally love that show and I feel the production value of that is a lot better than this 90210 series. Again, it's only been one episode so who knows it can grow to be even better than Degrassi. I liked how they brought the original cast members in Degrassi better than 90210. It made more sense.
For Rob Estes character, someone who was never on the original 90210 series and they mention how he used to go to Beverly Hills. I felt that was very much unnecessary.
I still think that the original 90210 cast is too young for a comeback series, it's only been 8 years. It would have been great to see their children be the new students (just like Degrassi). I don't think it makes sense how they wrote Brenda in the show. The dialog between Brenda and Kelly was awkward and "unrealistic" from the original series. It didn't make sense. Plus Kelly's sister's name is "Erin" and not "Silver".(unless I missed them say the name Erin in the show.) And they did have Andrea Zuckerman's Daughter in the show "Hannah Zuckerman" but, wouldn't Hannah be around 12 years of age? There's a few aspects of the show that has definitely been done before with Degrassi and South of Nowhere. I feel like it's lacking originality and the dialog is very corny. It doesn't feel realistic in a teenage world especially when some guy impresses a girl he just met to go on a Jet. I'm sorry but that is too far fetched and ridiculous.
Bottom line, if they didn't rush to get the series on air, the show could have been written A LOT BETTER. And I feel that they should bring back more of the original characters. The more original characters they bring the ratings will most likely go up. I do love how Nat is there but I do not care for the new peach pitt design, they should have kept the original set up. I think it's great to have new characters, but keep the old! To conclude my opinion: Will I continue to watch this series? Yes! In hopes that it will get better!
