Låt den rätte komma in (2008)
Not simply another horror movie
This is an existentialist coming of age drama about friendship, family and love a boundless love.
The horror elements here seems made to sell the film and they are very discreet, they add poetry to the tale, but are not as scary as they could be. The vampire is a tragic character searching for love and redemption.
There is here a driving need for companionship that is strong and compelling and the fact this is lived by teenagers gives this film an emotional layer that is incredibly endearing. In a way it reminded me another film "Close" by Lukas Dhont, in which the need of friendship can be a deadly affair as it's so important.
The slow pace, the framing, the attention to details grabbed and I was emotionally involved and interested all along.
Il filo invisibile (2022)
Wonderful Family Drama
I highly recommend this movie. In this film there is love, friendship, affection, redemption... Quarrels, confusion, screams...
This film shows us that all kinds of families can have problems, in such a natural and heartwarming way. You follow these characters' lives as if you were a part of them, and you find yourself writhing and getting too involved. I loved them ALL. I was extremely passionate and moved by the affection they have in their relationships. Parents, friends; I'm shaking with emotion, really. I don't even know how to put into words what I'm feeling right now. I wanted to see this film again, as if it were the first time.
Maybe it's not a movie that everyone will enjoy because some will object to surrogacy or same sex family, but I don't care for prejudices and its characters won my heart more and more, every minute. Actually I would love to know more of every characters, I wish they will develop it into a series to dig in each one of them.
Great script, excellent direction, natural photography. The development of the whole story is perfect and REAL! Captivating, beautiful and very talented actors. Thank you Netflix for this. I will appreciate more and more Italian filmworks, after seeing how brilliant this movie is!
I want to scream with so much emotion with this movie! I don't think I will soon forget this movie.
Perfetti sconosciuti (2016)
who we are
"Perfect Strangers" is a clever and well-executed exploration of modern relationships and the impact of technology on our lives. The characters are well-drawn and relatable, with their flaws and secrets exposed through the course of the film.
The story is engaging and full of surprises, with unexpected twists and turns that keep the audience guessing until the very end. The script is sharp and witty, with a mix of humor and drama that creates a compelling emotional journey for the characters.
The film's visual style is simple but effective, with a focus on the characters and their interactions that draws the audience into the story. The performances are strong, particularly Valerio Mastandrea as the host of the dinner party, who serves as the anchor for the film's themes and conflicts.
Overall, "Perfect Strangers" is a smart, entertaining, and thought-provoking film that offers a fresh and insightful perspective on the complexities of modern relationships. It is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys character-driven stories with a touch of humor and suspense.
A Classic Horror Story (2021)
Meta cinema
"A Classic Horror Story" follows five strangers stranded in the woods after a car accident, only to realize that they are being hunted by a group of masked assailants.
The film is a clever and engaging homage to classic horror tropes, with a meta-narrative that subverts audience expectations and keeps them on the edge of their seat. The performances are strong, particularly Matilda Lutz as the defiant and resourceful Elisa, who takes charge of the group and fights back against their attackers.
The film is moody and atmospheric and creates a palpable sense of dread and tension. The use of practical effects and inventive camera work adds to the film's overall sense of terror and unease.
Maybe not the most original horror movie, but a well-crafted and entertaining addition to the genre. Overall, "A Classic Horror Story" is a chilling scare-fest that delivers on its promises of thrills and chills.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
A timeless Masterpiece
"2001: A Space Odyssey" is a timeless masterpiece of science fiction that has continued to captivate and inspire audiences for over five decades since its release in 1968. Directed by Stanley Kubrick, the film is a visionary work of art that explores the deep mysteries of space, human evolution, and the future of mankind.
At its core, the film is a visual and philosophical journey that spans from the dawn of mankind to the edge of the universe. From the mysterious black monoliths that appear at key points in human history, to the iconic HAL 9000 computer that turns on its human crew, "2001" is a film that is both awe-inspiring and deeply unsettling.
What makes "2001" so remarkable is its visionary direction and technical achievements. The film's breathtaking visuals, including stunning space sequences, state-of-the-art special effects, and Kubrick's trademark long, silent takes, are a true testament to the power of cinema. The use of classical music, especially the famous opening strains of Richard Strauss's "Also sprach Zarathustra," creates a mesmerizing and unforgettable experience.
But "2001" is not just a technical marvel; it is also a deeply philosophical film that raises profound questions about human existence and the nature of consciousness. The film's ambiguous ending, which is open to interpretation, is a testament to Kubrick's willingness to challenge and inspire his audience.
In short, "2001: A Space Odyssey" is a masterpiece that is as relevant today as it was over 50 years ago. Its visionary direction, stunning visuals, and philosophical depth make it a true work of art that will continue to inspire and amaze audiences for generations to come.
Total Eclipse (1995)
Love s wild
Love is wild, has no boundaries and hurts those who try to live it. When love sparks between two artists in a time when homosexual love was even impossible to name there you have a damned story.
What interested me more was the love between a young man with a pure body, but with a wild and aggressive heart and an older man, with a great creative soul, but very vulnerable to love. They had some great moments together, possibly this is what made them go on for many years, but the they had to yeld to pressure of society, different approach to life, changing time. DiCaprio and Thewilis were totally in the game and they gave one of their best performances in the hands of genius Agnieska Holland . Maybe now they are quite different now and this film is a remote memory, but it will stay as a monument to impossible, tormented splendid love between two tragic souls.
The Fabelmans (2022)
the importance of the horizon
At one point of their lives everyman, but especially directors, need to go back to their childhood and their teenager's years to trace back the origin of their passion and their art.
We were waiting for Spielberg to do so and the Fabelmans is the answer. It's a quite and sincere movie a love letter to his family (was it really like this? What amazing parents did he have?) and to filmmaking.
It's a sign of the times that even a top director like him felt the need to thank the audience for going to watch the film in a movie theatre, are we really at the end ? I hope the situation is only one of the many deaths and rebirth of going to watch movies in cinemas.
Anyway going back to the film, we all know Spielberg is one of the greatest storyteller of all times so beside showing that he had a great though broken family behind him and what precocious talent he had form the very beginning, he says many important thing about movies.
E.g. How do they reveal the true nature of people, how movies influence our lives and our decisions, how hard is to make a good movie, even when you have a lot of talent.
I would need the space of an essay to write about this, but being a film student who aspires to become a director one day I just want to quote ( without spoilers) the lesson about the horizon that Ford/Lynch gives to the young Spielberg. You'll have to watch the film (In theatres possibly) till the end to watch it and learn about it , but I believe that when Sam/Stephen goes back and says "thank you" to him we know he understood a great lesson and felt for ever grateful because this opened the door to filmmaking paradise.
Thirteen (2003)
a deep knowledge of teenagers years
This was a very well done film. Sometimes movies are unnecessarily graphic. This is why I have hard time with some horror films and I only like those who works on emotions rather than those with scary vfx . I'm more annoyed when it comes to traumatic scenes in which the woman characters are victim to, however I felt this portrayed the perfect amount of realism. Although there are undeniably scenes which I would not recommend to some viewers, it is a great representation of how early teenage years can be easily influenced for the worse. I think that the friend "Evie" can be looked at as a reflection of the pressures of a worsening society in young adulthood. Mel, the mother, portrays an emotionally diverse character as she struggles between friendship and mother roles via her daughter Tracy. Even the few scenes with the father show the influence he has on his family, and the internal conflicts he faces. So yeah, even if I had some discomfort watching it but it hits close to home for me.
Mysterious Skin (2004)
disturbing but true
The director is incredible with how it deals with this topics in a sensible, realistic way. Managing to tackle coming of age, childhood sexual abuse, LGBT issues, drug issues, etc. In a kindhearted manner while providing genuine commentary is impressive.
I can only seem to describe this movie as devastating and utterly disturbing. For how much i'd like to write about it, I am at a complete loss for words.
"I wished with all my heart that we could just leave this world behind, rise like two angels in the night and magically disappear."
Additionally, the camera work of the film is incredible, each shot adds to the movie in its individual way. Every scene is important, there's no filler.
It's a pity that a great director like Gregg Araki is now only one of the many directors directing series and not personal films like this.
Ran (1985)
simply a masterpiece
This is a great Japanese war movie, this is one of Kurosawa's best movies not only because it's an adaptation of Shakespeare but because it has quite a rich history.
Kurosawa shines again with his films, after seeing The Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and High and Low this director never ceases to amaze me, even with its long duration and slow pace the film holds up quite well since the story it tells is quite entertaining and keeps you attentive to every minute that passes but yes, you can feel those almost 3 hours. I like how he tells the bad side of the Japanese conquests, their consequences and how they affect the conquered people and their families and there is a character in the movie who is very sad about the results of the king's conquest and also something interesting is how power strongly corrupts people and abandonment towards parents.
Run is a great masterpiece of the war genre and one of Kurosawa's best films it may be long and slow but what a movie it is, at least you have to see it once in your life for how great it is.
Europa (2021)
an intense personal experience
This is an exhausting film and that's a compliment. Europa makes you experience directly what it means to immigrate illegally and this is also an accusation to immigration policies. It should be shown to politicians to raise awareness. Europa it's also a thriller too. The premise is so simple but it's executed in such a fantastic way to the point it's enough to keep the viewer both informed of its important message and invested throughout despite a heavy reliance on minimalism. We follow Kamal on his journey from the start of this film until the end and it wouldn't have been as effective if it weren't for the brilliant performance by Adam Ali in the lead role. Directors had a plan in mind and it executed it very well. It reminded me Saul's son, with a similar approach it makes you feel what it's fear, way more than in horror movies.
Bones and All (2022)
It could have been better
I had high expectations for this movie. I loved Guadagnino's previous collaboration with Timmy Chalamet in Call Me by Your Name, but this film fails to stir my emotions that much. It's supposed to be a love story between two outcasts, two modern day cannibals, but the love story isn't very passionate, it's more like friends who end up together because they have no other choice. Cannibalism is sometimes a metaphor for sex, but in other parts it is simply murder and horror. Anyway, the film is more about Taylor Russell's character who is able to convey the emotional core of the film. We are shown her family and we can participate more in her story, while Chalamet's character is opaque and passive and his performance is not as good. Bones and All is aimed at a more sophisticated audience, but ultimately is reminiscent of teen genre films such as vampire films like the Twilight saga.
Spaccaossa (2022)
a desperate portrait
This is a story of poverty and human misery. A sordid reality where desperate people roam around who break bones to cheat insurance companies to survive. There are no positive characters, but human desperation is well represented and the human being is laid bare in all its fragility. Vincenzo Pirotta, here director and lead is Vincenzo a 45-year-old man who lives with his terrible mother and finds desperate people willing to have their bones broken to cash insurance money. Selene Caramazza here damn real and intense in one of her best performances is Luisa a drug addict who is having an affair with Vincenzo. It's a film that leaves little hope and draws a picture where there are many victims and the perpetrators (apart from the insurer) are no less desperate than their victims. In any case, it is worth seeing.
Rapiniamo il Duce (2022)
Much ado about nothing
This film tries to be a free run quoting old films like Mario Monicelli's "Soliti ignoti" and other films that were successful comedies of the glorious past of Italian cinema. It also feels free to use music of more recent times, willing to be walk back and forth of time. All this could be good, but at the end it doesn't work. Why? Because the characters are not well designed and the actors are lost in their grotesque representation. An expensive film with a lot of noise and action that does not excite and leads nowhere. You could take just as fun action, but it fails to do so and the narrative gets lost in the attempt to amaze the viewer. I wish Netflix could focus on more meaningful films!
Aftersun (2022)
slow burning
I love the father daughter relationship this is so much part of going up for every one. It 's so pivotal for each of us. We refer to them all along our lives. Growing up you transform them from imperfect gods to flawed individuals that you learn to love, because as life goes on you learn you are no better then them. This is an interesting and really moving subject, this film talks about this and the troubled relationship of the two characters is central to the film.
So good for the subject but no for the narrative. I had hard time with the slow pace, with the absence of key moments in which the characters could express and reveal themselves. It felt like a documentary full of
ambiguity and non-events which at the end bored me. Remember film is like life without the boring moments, here is mostly boring moments.
Midsommar (2019)
the horror of where we come from
MIDSOMMAR by Ari Aster, is an interesting movies that explore the creepy folk traditions. MIDSOMMAR slowly deeps us in the nightmare in full light. Florence Pugh is great in the opening sequence, then the slow-burning suspense takes foot until the shocks of the 'cliff' sequence then tasing take the wrong turn and the horror starts. The problem are the main characters which are not very likeable, and the film lack meaning and narrative cohesion. The film is truly fascinating but also random and meaningless. Now there are many more films that are not perfect, but MIDOSOMMAR was nonetheless able to mark a point and become a different horror film that marks the genre and maybe the this art in general.
