Village Tale (1935)

Movie exists

The version I saw was on a russian website called Vk and it was in spanish. I saw the film as I am a spanish speaker myself. Anyways the only english dialouge is when they sing at the church. The movie was mediocre but not slow in any way and it was very entertaining regardless of it not being in its original langueage. I might watch again if an english copy is avaliable but I could not find any one you tube or another russian website that is notorious for having almost every early 1930s movie and that is ok ru. The last time someone who reviewed this movie i was in kindergarten. Gwynplaine is known to have seen films that are deemed lost from private collectors.

Can you find the wolves in this picture?
21 October 2023
The teaser had me hook from the start and really proved that cinema was back. Well paced film felt more like two hours and things that were mentioned earlier returned later on in the film. Without spoiling the film the ending felt like martys last while paying respect to the fallen osage of the 1920s. This movie was worth the hype and loved every minute of it. The movie theater i saw it at was at galaxy in riverside and it was an amazing experince too bad i spent like 42 dollars there. Anyways this film will grip you and may have you tear up at the end and yes there is some gory imagery but this is a crime film.

Are you there God?

In the mid 2000s my younger sibling owned this book and and became an inside joke over the years. The film was a great coming of age film. The performances of Rachel McAdam's never disappoint. Sure there were some scenes that were uncomfortable to watch but thats how real it felt for a coming of age film. I hope this film gets more coverage once it hits streaming it barley hit its production cost. I'm glad I saw this in theater with my family. I personally never read the book but my sister and mom did and said it was very fateful to the book. The movie in general was good but in my opinion not the best. It was entertaining.

Sobre las olas.
21 March 2023
Well the Print I watched this motion picture was scratchy and a little bit blurry I could barley hear most of the actors talk at time but I and persevered continue watching the film. While I have admiration for early talkies this film was intriguing when it came to film history I watched solely on it portraying the Barrymore family. Ina Claire and Fredric march make the movie entreating as it may seem slow at times. Fredric solely steals the show and the film becomes more fast paced and is no wonder he was nominated during the 4th academy awards in 1931. While Not a spoiler I was taken back from the first few minutes of the film of a piano reciting "Sobre las olas" a mexican piece.

More for James Cagney fans
10 March 2023
Cliché and mediocre are two words to describe this motion picture and I have to agree with many reviewers on this page if it weren't for Cagney I would not be writing this review. I am biased as a big Cagney fan. I did not like the portrayals of yellow face but that did not diminish most performances. Upon futher reading one of the only asian american actors Phillip Ahn was of korean decscent not Japanese which is probaly a good reason he was not offended by being in the film given the historical context. Also I just realised the director who film this Frank Loyd won not only best picture but best director in 1933.

Heil myself!
16 February 2023
I watched this film for the sole purpose of Carole lombards last motion picture. And the comedian that is Jack Benny. These people had the balls to make fun of the Nazis during this as the war in europe and now in asia was still looming over them. I heard this film was a box office bomb and when audiences saw Carole on screen they clapped and cheered and their is no evidence to suggest the film makers took out a plane line she said in the film. Carole also said this was one of her favorite films. Director Ernst Lubitsch did a fine job on this film and I am only familar with trouble in paradise (1932) and Ninotchka (1939)

Off we go into the wild blue yonder
16 February 2023
This review is biased because I love films made during this time period and it stars Spencer Tracy and Irene Dunne. Fascinating careers they both had in Hollywood. The movie did fall flat in some parts and definitely some holes but that can be excused from the censors during wartime. James Gleason and Van Johnson did good in this motion picture at well. The movie was fast paced and parotic I am kind of fascinated why speilberg liked this film and can't piece it together not spoiling the ending but it is a little niche. I liked that the first review of this movie was made from a real ww2 veteran who not only saw this movie when it came out but also saw 1935s munity on the bounty and he talked about his experience.

Dream a little dream of me

Warning: Spoilers
I didn't realize the actor who played Walter White in this motion picture. This film is a feel good movie and its not like what hollywood puts out now a days. That being said the film was a little bit out of place and it wasn't the films fault it was more of my preferences. The sub plot of the teenager knowing the lottery was kind of cringing to watch. Overall I enjoyed the film not sure if I would watch it again though. The film gave off a "instant family" (2018) vibe throughout the film maybe because it was the same studio that made the film. I liked how they showed the real jerry and marge at the end of this film. Also not a spoiler but this film is supposed to be present day not 2003 as in real life. And present day like 2019 ish because you know the pandemic.

You dirty rat!
31 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This review is going to be a little biased because I am a big James Cagney fan. The plot of the film was one half about taxis and the other half was a love story/gangster motion picture. The films plot almost played like a bad B movie I have rated on here from time to time (i will not review those films unless i have reason to) . The film is however memorable for the famous mis quoted line in the film "you dirty rat" also the scene were Loretta young and James Cagney were in a dancing competition which was my personal favorite because it stared future scarface actor geroge raft in an uncredited role and the dancing competition reminded me of my grandmother who said she and my grandfather would go to dance competitions when they were younger. The films flaw was the plot besides the memorable scenes. Oh wait major spoiler donald cook is in this film (donald cook played james cagneys brothers in the public enemy 1931) he plays an actor james cagney takes his girlfriend to go see the movie with. While James Cagneys character is watching the film he says "his ears are too big" referring to Donald Cook. I did not like Leila Bennett in this film and maybe it was because of her voice.

Poor Mans "Andy Hardy"
5 January 2023
Ill admit it a chuckled at the first scenes of this film not cause of the edits and jumps cuts this film had. Because the first few moments of the film was genially funny and David Sharpies character "dave" (go figure huh) was a funny guy. The plot comes out of no where as dave meets a family and switches car and meets a racer and a mechanic as he joins a race out of no where. Its like the andy hardy writers had an idea scrapped it and gave it to the poverty row studios and independent cinemas to shoot. Now that I think about it this film predates the andy hardy series. Anyways their is literally a scene where dave is driving and you can see the reflection of the director and the camera man lmao!

why isnt it the old town cheese!
4 January 2023
This was my first introduction to Robert Donat and he makes a wonderful performance as "Mr. Chips" I will be looking foward to view more of his films like "the 39 steps" as soon as possible. As the motion picture itself well it was alright the only flaw i saw was the pace of the film. Greer Garson had a wonderful performance in this film but I preferred her more in the mrs miniver film. Im no teacher but I did work with children so some of the scenes in the film were relatable such as them being rowdy and you have to show discipline toward them. This film with toe to toe with many great films like gone with the wind and mr smith goes to Washington during the Oscars. Not surprisingly gone with the wind won that year in 1939.

Singing in the rain!
2 January 2023
Rewatched this motion picture again after years of it missing on YT and reappearing at archive. Besides its easy to confuse this film with "shows of shows" (1929) another all star cast film but filmed by warner brothers. Being one of MGMs first Talkie it is very interesting as they were the last studio in Hollywood to transition. While the acting is not as good the film is interesting and entertaining to watch. One of my favorite numbers is the brox sisters scene. The whole film is an artifact of the early sound days and thank goodness that MGM saw value in preserving their films for future generations.

Pardon me I thought you were a dummy!
29 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Saw this film years ago and forgot about it. Now as I am re-watching lots of films of 1930s and looking at other obscure actors and actress work. I am very fascinated in the department store atmosphere of this film and the way people shopped in those days. The copy I saw was blurred but I was able to make up some of the brands that were at the time. Eddie Qulin did an ok job at this film but I was really rooting for Sally Starr who plays Mary in the film. The film as a whole is only good on Act 1 but falls short after the orphanage scene. Eddie Quinns mannerisms and way of talking reminded me of the modern gay man.

Singing in the rain!
23 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film with some friends at a small movie theater and like most critics this film had me with mixed feelings from start to finish. I persevered and watched the film. I did not like the first few minutes of the film where not even five minutes in we see an elephant take a dump on a guy and followed by a pov shot. Margot Robbie and Brad pitt made great performances but I didnt really connect with their characters in any way. It was Diego Calva that stole the show and had a wonderful performance in this. The film also nods to classic Hollywood films like the "jazz singer" (1927) and MGM' "Hollywood Revue of 1929" (1929) where their is a scene where brad pitt is singing with buster Keaton and other stars of the time. The ending was interesting and for some reason made me tear up a little but only when Diego Calvas character manuel was watching the film and i thought to myself this is probably how audiences who were their during the transition to sound saw the movie "singing in the rain"

Muß i denn, Muß i denn!
4 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Had the great pleasure and privilege to view this film at a movie theather made and operated during the golden age of hollywood. This german film was very fast paced and entertaining. It does capture the horrors of war which will forever be implanted in my mind. I have seen the other 2 adaptions of this film and I say he one that won best picture was kind of better that being said this film is better in monetarization. Thier is probaly some innacuaries in the film but the thing that was true was the ending the german army wanted one final "victory" and more soilders died on the last day of fighting.

Another forgot film by a poverty row studio
28 November 2022
This review is biased as Im going to be completely honest I am more into all star cast films with major studios attached to it in the 1930s-1940s. That being said B movies can be good like 1950s "outrage" this film is not a good b film other wise known as a poverty row motion picture. The whole plot revolves around a girl who threateans to leave a man all cause he is defending criminals that know are guilty. I know its a diffrent era but just leave the dude. Mickey rooney is in this picture and is not the lead and has a small part (duh they would give the lead to a literal child at least not in 1930 and the star that would break barriers for children stars would be our gang and shirley temple)

One of the greatest indie films ever made
25 November 2022
Hands down one of the greatest movies about Hollywood/ film industry ever made. I watched this film weeks ago and It does not leave my head it's so memorable and quotable. I usually like films where I know the actors or the story is really good but these Unkown actors at their time did a wonderful job. Yes their are some stars in their like whoopie Goldberg and Ryan Reynolds but I think this is the only film I like Whoopie in. Their is a scene that portrays paranoia so real i felt sick to my stomach and had anxiety while watching it. So many plot twists in the film. It's not to perfect I must admit the love story and the ending was kind of cheesy. But this motion picture made me laugh and be scared of the industry. It's such a cut throat environment that regardless whatever power you hold in Hollywood remember "you're replaceable"

out of all the screen craft productions films its certainly one of them
19 November 2022
This 1934 film was directed by western director Lewis D collins. Stars Lola Lane and William Collier Jr. This movie is basically a love story and how this guy "ridicules' and humiliates her to win her heart. Yes you heard that right. Now Im hearing this with my 21st century hears and saying what the? But I tried giving the movie a chance knowing 2 things. 1 its a different time period and 2 this motion picture is almost a century old everyone that has worked on this film has long gone. Not even half way into the film and it feels dull and then I realized I just had to stop watching. Lola lane did a good job in this film.

I had the DVD as a child
19 November 2022
I remember the dvd cover of this film same as the offical poster for the film. I liked it as a kid but now as an adult not so much as i cringe when i see the "fantasy" scenes where alice wishes her life would be. Penny marshall is still believable as a tough teacher. She is honestly carrying the film. Alyson Stoner well Im biased because I did have a crush on her as a child. I remember coming home from third grade and playing LPSO with my sister and we would watch this movie mutiple times along with alvin and the chipmunks, my girl and a polly pocket film we picked up at a local store named Cardenas. Also I hate that the sub plot is the rock band brother in the garage Its so cliché.

A forgotten Film but for those who are into the early days of hollywood
15 November 2022
Yes This film is forgettable. In Fact I barley saw this a few days ago and I already forgot what it was about or the story. I know its about two hollywood extras trying to make it in hollywood. I did see a familiar face in the film and that was Beryl Mercer who played the older mother in such films as the public enemy (1931) all quiet in the western front (1930) and she also stared in the film with Shirley temple. One thing i do remember of this film was its beach scenes as they looked beautiful to look at as the ocean waves would hit the shore. This film is for pre code fans and people who love old hollywood and this period where they transitioned to sound.

y'all ready for this?
5 November 2022
First things first what a cast! No the movie is not the best and its bit of a personal guilty pleasure. Ive been meaning to watch this film at a young age like so many trailers i saw as a child. Some films were disappointment but this film was not until after the 30 min mark when the film went flat on its face. Will Feral character is very unlikeable in the film. (fun fact in real life he owns a soccer franchise called LAFC in the late 2010s). Robert Duvall steals every scene in this film I was rooting for him throughout the film. Many familiar faces from my childhood appear in the film like Phil Lewis who played mr mosby in the suite life to Josh Hutcherson from Little Manatthan 2005.

Just for the Nostalgia
2 November 2022
The movie theater scene always made me jealous cause I had a huge crush on Alyson stoner as a kid. The film has a very basic plot the Baker family vs the Murtaugh family at a camp that the kids would frequent when they were younger. The movie is cheesezy and your typical family movie and it also cameos another film in their not a spoiler but its ice age. The reason why ice age is in this movie is because the production comapny 20th century fox is the same comapany this movie was being filmed in. I only rewatch this film cause I loved it as a kid. I always loved family movies like big ones on screen.

Jealousy
30 October 2022
Hands down whatever film Fernando Soler is in he out shines. One of the great actors of the golden age of Mexican Cinema and what my grandparents call it "La epoca de oro" the film tells of a doctor Armando (played by Fernando Soler) falls in love with a reckless patient named Irene (played by Vilma Vidal and in an interesting note she stop appearing in films in the 1940s.) After a year of marriage Armando feels betrayed by Irene and gets jealous that he thinks a young doctor named Federico (Played by Arturo de Córdova) will take her away from him. The opening of the picture was strange as it didn't appear Irene yelling was in pain but more like she was moaning and the film goes down from their because the whole plot revolves around Armando saving Irene over something so small and all of a sudden they fall in love. Worth watching if you are into the early days of Mexican cinema are interested in history and like looking at the clothes, background, cars of that time period. The copy of the film I saw was on YT and no English subtitles.

the final police squad
30 October 2022
I did not like the second police squad i did enjoy the last instalment very funny in the start but falls flat as the film ends. I did get chuckles here and their and got many of the references as I know about the 90s and the people that lived during that time. This will be OJ simpsons last film before his infamous trial and the actor. Leslie Nielsen was a funny actor and he did such a good job in this film i kind of hoped they made a fourth one in the 2000s but who knows. I heard a reboot was going to happen in the mid 2010s but have not heard any thing since that article was published. Priscilla Presley also did really good in this film and i just realized the blonde bombshell in the film was pamela anderson.

Last boat I was on had snacks! you have snacks?
29 October 2022
For some reason I didnt cry at the ending this time as i did as a young child when I first saw this around 2006-2008. It was a re run during the golden age of Disney Channel. I forgot that dave coulier (joey from full house) was in this tv made film. I knew Justin Jon Ross looked familiar he was in little giants (1994) (another film from my youth.) he stopped .stopped acting in the 2000s. The film its self is mediocre at best but yes it is nostalgia. The one line that did get me was the snacks line at the start of the film. Courtnee Draper is doing films and i think she did an anime dub film not too much into anime so im not sure what part she got in the film. In this film she acted good but what do you expect from a tv film.
