Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
A bumpy ride
This is one great film. I went to see this movie expecting a little more of a conspiracy plotline. I am so glad to say that it is far from that.
Michael Gondry will forever remain one of the most original filmakers in the history of motion pictures. His story's are like taking a hay ride through surrealism. One would be absolutely thrilled at the marvels he has made for the screen. I myself enjoy Mr. Gondry's work on a regular basis.
Okay. The movie itself is well put together. At first you may fell like "Where the heck are we going with this?", but then two seconds later you'll find that what you have just seen makes perfect sense. The movie seems to take a u-turn at one point. This causes you to see the whole film in a different perspective. Wether or not Mr. Gondry does this on purpose could mean the difference between blind luck or pure genius.
The acting. I have never seen a better performance by Mr. Jim Carrey. I say this with absolute sincerity. I am completely serious. I can honestly say that Mr. Carrey made an absolute believable character in this film. I have never seen him perform a character like this. Carrey can act. I mean he can act. The things his character does and says. The expressions on his face alone were so real that at one point during the movie I forgot I was watching Jim Carrey on the silver screen. All that I have just said applies to Kate Winslet. Her performace shook me up. She hasn't played a character like that and I personally think that this film will do wonders for her career. As for the rest of the cast...wonderful. Tom Wilkinson seems to deliver a great performance without lifting a finger. I have never seen Mark Ruffalo really. I don't know much about him, but from what I have seen he can act. Kirsten Dunst was absolutley phenomenal as a character. I think she is a better character actor than a lead actor. She has the ability to carry a story as a minor character in a film. Elijah Wood as always is fantastic. Mr. Wood has made quite a career for himself in hollywood. I expect great things to come of his success.
To wrap up this rather thrown together review, I can only end it by saying: GREAT FILM, PHENOMENAL DIRECTOR, PLEASANTLY REAL ACTING, DELIGHTFUL STORY. See this movie now you euphoric hungry person you.
Pollock (2000)
An American Saga
A true story. Yes, as we all know the story of Jackson Pollock is that of a true story. The film Pollock illustrates this particular story for us. Seeing as it is a true story one cannot judge it on it's story elements because they were not originally from the mind of a human, they just happened.
The critics seemed to enjoy bashing this film in some aspects. I personally don't see what was wrong with it. First time director, and long time actor, Ed Harris did beautifully as the director. I absolutely loved his performance as Jackson Pollock. I was astounded that he did not get recognized as best actor for this performance. I was also stunned by Marcia Gay Hardens performance as Lee Krasner. Overall the acting this film was stellar and consequently underrated.
The production team of this film did a fabulous job with every artistic aspect of this film. I have never seen a better imitation of a great mind. The paintings that Harris did as Pollock were almost without flaw. He learned to paint like Pollock and that is one of the reasons he should have won best actor.
The film was enjoyable. Of course it did have it's sad elements. If you are looking for an interesting film that will make you think, I would definitely see this movie. Of course a lot of people don't like to think when they see a film. I hope to see that changed in the near future however. It's rather ridiculous to see a true story criticized because it was entertaining to intelligence that of an eight grader(no offense). Anyway
see the film.
Naked Lunch (1991)
True Cronenberg
Yes. Naked Lunch is confusing. But there is a meaning that is behind all of the illustration. For those of you who have read the book, you will notice that the movie Naked Lunch is not exactly an accurate adaptation, but more of a compilation of William S. Burroughs Books.
Naked Lunch is about a man named Bill Lee. He is an exterminator and a Junk addict (Junky). He is sucked into a the corrupt world of interzone where his is given assignments to fullfil for the company he works for. He then writes these reports which is supposedly how the book "Naked Lunch" was written. The conflict lies in the story of Lee's adventures. The ending is none like I have ever seen.
The Direction in this film is fabulous. I have seen very few on Cronenberg's work so I am not one to judge too much. From what I have seen I am very impressed. I am curious as to why Cronenberg has not been thoroughly recognized for all his work.
The acting in this film consists of mostly character acting. There is alot of depth involved in the protagonist however. So much in fact that is liable to drive you nuts. But other than that the acting is a pure joy.
As far as the movie overall I wouldn't mind watching this movie twice in an evening. It's alot to take in but it's so interesting it will have you wanting to know more. The trick with this film is to not waste your time thinking of the meaning, but to just sit back and enjoy it. Once it's over it may or may not make some sense. Great Film
Stand by Me (1986)
A definite Gem
Stand By Me has always been on my "To See" movie list. I never got around to it until recently. I was very surprised and utterly delighted at how good of a job well done the production team had accomplished.
Stephen King has always been a favorite of mine. I like his dramatic pieces much better than any of his horror stories. I was glad to see that his story "The Body" was made into a movie. He pumps out orignial stories that dazzle. Don't miss any of his work.
In terms of direction, this movie couldn't have been done better. Rob Reiner has a flair for directing. He works well with children, which helped in this case. Doing this movie was a challenge for Mr. Reiner (as said in his commentary). He took a fabulous story that was something dear to him and put it on the screen, and that takes intelligence. There is no doubt in my mind that Rob Reiner had what it takes.
As far as acting goes, I couldn't have asked for anything better. This being Jerry O'Connel's first film role, I would have to say he did superb. The late River Phoenix is a phenomenon of an actor and there is no doubt that this was a pinnacle of his acting career. Corey Feldman, as always, delivers an interesting yet entertaining interpretation of his character. Wil Wheaton does an excellent job carrying the torch as the protagonist. Kiefer Sutherland is not without his usual spark in his craft. An amazing performance by all actors.
Don't shrug this movie off. Go out and rent it or even buy it. The hour and a half you spend watching it is one you won't regret. Watch this with your friends, you would be surprised at how many refrences you can make in your own experiences with this movie. Enjoy the show.
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
watch me if you can
I went to see this film expecting alot of delicate, well done, directing. I would have to say that i got just what I wanted. If you take fine actors and put them into one film and have a genius direct it what do you get? An Oscar. This film by far is a great achievement on Mr. Speilberg's part. Mr. Di Caprio and Mr. Hanks as well as Mr. Walken all were incredible as they embodied these true life characters. I will aprecciate Mr. Speilbergs work and refer to this film whenever i talk about his films. Log this one away in your memory bank folks. But be careful, dont lose it!
Signs (2002)
Great cast, great acting, great direction, great story, great movie
If you have not seen Signs yet, you have probably guessed it is about extra-terrestrial life on earth. After you have seen the movie you may or may not think differently.
Signs goes into detail about the emotional well being of the main characters. I was surprised to see the movie achieved this in such a short time. Graham Hess (played by Mel Gibson) is a former reverend, and seems to be loosing faith throughout the movie. Gibson superbly acts out this emotional distress that Graham has. I can't tell you much about Grahams emotional role in the movie, seeing as it would give away too much about the film.
Merrill Hess (played by Joaquin Phoenix) is Graham's younger brother. Allot of the story is shared with Merrill. Merrill also has his mental weak points. Phoenix to has an excellent performance.
Morgan and Bo Hess are Graham's two children who play almost a bigger role than the adult performers. Rory Culkin delivers and makes the movie all the more entertaining as well as Abigail Breslin. Almost all of the things showed in the film build up to the ending. Though I have to say I didn't know how it was going to end. That is one of the things that make Signs and excellent movie. M. Night Shyamalan weaves a most original plot. He of course, plays a small, almost cameo role in the movie.
The movie will in a way scare you so that you don't even know how deep the story line is until later. This movie is one of the most original pieces of cinema I have ever seen. My opinion simply stated:' See the movie".
Ice Age (2002)
This is one you don't want to miss!
Ice age captures the emotions it is trying to trigger in you. And it does a good job of doing that. It very entertaining and fun to watch. That is what made it such a good movie. If you don't want to see it, then don't see it. But i would see it If i were you. Exellent performance by John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, and Ray Romano!
Panic Room (2002)
Thrill Room
If you have been waiting for a satisfing, suspenseful thriller, then your ship had come in. Jodie foster does an exellent job in the film panic room. It has plenty of amazing scenes that will make your head spin. The movie was so good that people were yelling "C'MON!" during the suspenseful parts. (warning: suttle spoiler!)People clapped loudly when the bad guy got smacked with a sledge hammer by jodie foster. Don't pass this one up!

Donnie Darko (2001)
Problems
Donnie Darko is a film that you could see many times and not understand it. That is if you don't have problems. If you have seen this movie, but have never had emotional problems, then you will never really understand what the movie is actually about. Those of you that have emotional problems...you understand perfectly what I am saying. Donnie is a teen that is afraid of being alone.(I would be extremely surprised if you caught that the first time you saw the movie). Frank is another story. See the movie and maybe you'll figure it out.
Traffic (2000)
Traffic Jam
I personally gave think this movie was great. Not because i liked it, but because it was an accurate of the drug traffic portrayl in this country. It shows how bad it really is. We may not all want to hear this, but face it, thats reality and that is how it really is. You can think about it all you want and the world isn't going to any different when your done.
American Beauty (1999)
American Booty
American beauty is a feast of lust and hate, and marajauna. The story of a 42 year old man infatuated with a high school teen seems like a desperate attempt at making an original movie. And guess what...it worked! This movie pulls through with an original story and squeeses in a little dirty humor on the side. This enjoyable flick literally means what the tagline says: "Look Closer". Watch this movie and don't forget to look closer.
American Psycho (2000)
wierd entertainment
As dark as this movie was, it had me laughing at some parts despite the fact it was about a split personality psyco killer. The film showed the story of a sucessful buisness man who killed female prostitutes as a hobbie on the side. It was a subconcious addiction. Yet the killer gets away with everything. I especially like Christopher Walkens small role as an investigator. The movie was absolutley entertainingly weird.
Starship Titanic (1998)
Nobody likes a smart a**!
Douglas Adams shows his brilliant work in this frustrating yet fun and visually stunning pc game. The game isn't meant to be easy. That is why it is so confusing. It's a science fiction adventure game that leaves you with a satisfying feeling. John Cleeses voice cameo is very enjoyably funny!
October Sky (1999)
True story, good movie!
This movie is amazingly well acted. It'll make you laugh it will make you cry. Jake Gylenhaal is a phenomenal young actor with the ability to portray a west virginian adolescent. The movie is just great. The way it starts, goes on, and ends is all astonishingly performed! See this movie!
Fargo (1996)
Coen Genius
I love the works of the coen brothers (Excluding O brother where art thou?). Fargo was a delight to watch because it was so well put together. The aspects of the film were almost perfect. The acting is what i would call fabulous and outstanding! See the movie if you haven't already and you will be pleasantly surprised.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
fantastic
Like few movies do, the shawshank redemption capture that feel and atmosphere of a good movie. I find myself watching this movie over and over. It does a good job of wowing you whilst shocking you. Do yourself a huge favor and watch this movie!
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
What the...
I am sorry i really am. I just can't understand how anyone could enjoy this movie. Despite the great acting it displayed, it was a pretty unpredictable movie that left me angry. I will never look at John Goodman the same way ever again. Do yourself a favor and don't damage your intellect by seeing this movie.
Shrek (2001)
I don't know what to say(really, really, really good)
Are you depressed? This movie is the cure! Shrek was a much more deep film than most people realized. I don't care what anybody says about it. This movie really helped me. Just look at Shrek and donkey they both had their problems, especially Shrek who was emotionally damaged. This movie helped me to realize that i am who i am and that's the way it's going stay. And it made me feel good about that. It should do the same for you not to mention that it would make you laugh your larynx out. I'm not going say anymore because you need to find out for yourself. Sit down with your family, or by yourself and watch this movie.
Corky Romano (2001)
A Laugh riot!
If you like the comical styling of "Chris Kat tan", then this new comedy is sure to please you! The movie is about a klutzy veterinarian who has to prevent his father (a leader of a family crime business) from being arrested by the FBI. So they send Corky into the FBI as a new agent. His goal is to find the evidence against his father and destroy it. But Corky runs into a few dilemmas along the way! Overall this movie leaves you with a satisfying ending. You'll probably want to see it again!
