The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle (1939)
Lovely Biopic about the Castles and good performances
What I loved about this movie was how funny, talented, sweet, and genuine Vernon Castle and Irene Castle were in real life. Along how very much in love they were. This films chronicles their life together along with the love they had for one another. From their struggle to becoming renown dancing sensations to them wanted to have a normal life after their rise to fame.
Fred Astaire is just wonderful in this Musical Biopic and gives a very wonderful and touching dramatic role as well. Ginger Rogers is lovely in this movie and also gives a touching dramatic role too. Walter Brennan is funny as their friend Walter Ashe and does quite well in being dramatic also. Edna May Oliver is excellent portraying their agent Maggie Sutton as well.
The dancing numbers in this movie are lovely and so romantic. Just watching Fred and Ginger dance is like being hypnotized. The way these two were in the ten films they did in truly enjoyable to watch. They knew how to capture an audience attention.
If you love seeing a movie about actual dancers/actors, being portray by REAL dancers/actors. I suggest you see this wonderful movie with the late Astaire and Rogers.
All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
A TRUE film about War!
This is the one War movie that stands true to what a film about War is.
Plus why no one want it to ever happen in the first place.
It's honest, accurate, and bold.
What made this film so relevant still is how boldly and honestly it depicts that War isn't all patriotic as it's cracked up to be.
That those who're prideful, inconsiderate, tepid, and deceptive would fill the heads of these young, vulnerable, respectable, and dignified men into thinking War is a thing a beauty. Like it's a form of Entertainment. Like its a thing that everyone in your country sees it the same way. That once you apply that you'll wear the finest uniform when you serve and once you return that women would want you.
When War is SO not in anyway like that! It's about sacrificing yourself for the freedom of your country; whether you survive it or not. That you're likely to have your body part or parts of your face shot off in battle. That you could have your leg amputated when you go under surgery from a bad injury. That your likely to develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) when stuck in the trenches for far too long. That food is scarce plus limited and you can go without it for weeks; maybe even longer than expected.
THAT is what War REALLY is like! This film also shows how no one likes to be fighting others in War over something that they only wish they would learn for what reason. It also shows that when you have a bond with a group of friends around you during War, it makes being in it less painful and horrid.
This film also shows how death could happen at any time when you least suspect it.
The first time I watch this movie, I immediately fall in love with it! Since 2008 I've watched this film every Remembrance Day and have NEVER stopped! I HIGHLY recommend this film to anyone who like to see a War film about what War truly is and how no one want it.
Life (1999)
A good Comedic and Dramatic movie with Eddie as a dramatic actor that must NOT be ignored!
I thought this movie was funny, but also serious as well. Showing how it was back in the late 30s when African Americans were framed for crimes they never committed and were throw in jail. Another thing it showed was how only a few African Americans could read and write. The film is very accurate when it depicts the life of African Americans who have been imprisoned wrongfully.
Eddie Murphy's portrayal of Ray Gibson is flawless and touching, showing how he can be funny, tough, difficult, but loving at times. Martin Lawrence portrayal of Claude Banks is flawless as well, making as a believably imitated, hopeful, intellectual, dignified, and at times... heartbroken man. The late Bernie Mac short portrayal of a Gay inmate is funny and helps reminds you that this film is also a Comedy, not just a Drama. Th rest of the cast is good as well in both being funny and serious.
Eddie's Dramatic acting is just as good as his Comedic acting and must NEVER be ignored!
Arthur (1981)
Not a bad movie with some good acting
If you saw this movie, you probably said to yourself "Does this person act just like Arthur? All overgrown, insensitive, and sordid?" Eventually the answer to your own question was YES! WAY before these disreputable celebrities that were familiar came around; their was Arthur Bach. A fictitious Enligsh character who everyone in his family wish would grow up and quit making a odious disgrace of himself. Namely is valet who has been his best friend since he was a child. (More fatherly to him than even his real father.)
The late Dudley Moore portrays Arthur nicely and makes him even show his serious side nearing the end.Liza Maneilli plays a believable aspiring actress who is a bit of a trouble maker herself. But still has class, intelligence, and dignity. John Gielgud who portrays Hobson the valet is wonderfully brilliant and funny at times... and touching. The rest of the cast is good as well.
Overall this movie isn't that bad and is great for watching when you have nothing much else to do during your spare time.
Batman Returns (1992)
One of the best 'Batman' films!
What makes this 'Batman' film such a memorable one is it's excellent plot and script. The actions scenes are amazing and very intense.
Burce Wayne/Batman never been so well written and just keeps you coming back for more. The part of when Selina becomes; metamorphoses into Catwoman is a bit of a mystery to some people, but if you give it enough thought you'll understand why it looked the way it did. Ozwalt Cobblepott/Penguin is somewhat sympathetic in the beginning of the film when you see how rejected he was by his parents, but sadly is nothing but pure evil through out the film. Max Shreck is a tepid, deceptive, and manipulative fiend who you just wish you can punch the lights out of badly.
Michael Keaton's portrayal of Batman/Burce Wayne was flawless and spot on. Michelle Pheiffer's role as Selina Kyle/Catwoman was incredible, luscious, and compelling to watch. Danny Devito as Ozwalt Cobblepott/Penguin is of perfect perfection and VERY raw. Christpher Walken as Max Shreck is believable and reminds of former or current boss you might have who was just as tepid and self centred. The late Michael Gough's role as Alfred isn't flawed and is perfect as always.
Overall, this film is one of the best films I've ever seen and deserves the 10 stars that it's given.
Coming to America (1988)
It's pure Eddie Murphy gold!
When I fist saw the movie trailer, I thought it was funny and couldn't wait to see it. When I finally did, I couldn't stop cracking up! Eddie is SO funny as Prince Akeem and who knew that Aresnio Hall had Comedic chops too as Semmi. When you look at Prince Akeem, you can't help but feel that he seem partially based on Michael Jackson. (In the famous person wants to be with someone who WON'T hitch with him 'cause of what he is phase, oh and the 'Soul Glo' product looks like it's inspired by MJ's hair too is another sign.) James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair are good as Eddie's parents and John Amos is good as Shari Headley father too. This film has the most funniest scenes, such as the ones with Eddie and Arsenio as multiple characters! This film is pure Eddie Murphy gold and is one of his best movies!
Little Richard (2000)
Great film on Little Richard's Life
I honest NEVER knew that the same guy who was in Madonna's Like a Prayer' music video and was Leila Rochron boyfriend in 'Waiting to Exacle' could do such a wonderful job playing Little Richard. The film shows Little Richard life as being both happy and at times sad. The relationship with his father is somewhat like that of Michael Jackson and his father-but VERY MUCH different. Little Richard grows up as a Christain and is taught NOT to listen to music such as Rock n' Roll. But he CAN'T help himself to fall in love with it and become a Rock n' Roll star. His sisters are happy that he fulfilled his dreams but his father still thinks he made a big mistake. When Little Richard becomes the big music star that he is, even his own mother is amazed and proud of what her son has achieved. The rest of the film shows Richard as a sweet, naughty, and at times, broken. Leon did a wonderful performance as Little Richard and HAD the film been made for the screen, he would surely of been nominated for an Oscar.
The Simpsons: Stark Raving Dad (1991)
Michael couldn't fool me
When I first saw that memorable episode of the Simpsons many years ago. I just knew that it was Michael. The accent and the kind and gentle voice COULDN'T be that of an impersonator. When the episode ended, I was shocked and sadden to see that his name wasn't their. BUT I still had the feeling that it WAS him that did the voice. Every time that episode came up time and time again; I still felt sadden that it wasn't he same one. I still love the episode and I know that other MJ fans did too. Still, seeing that APPARENTLY it wasn't him that did the voice of the fat guy was disappointing to me. But thanks to IMDb.com, I found out the true!
Blonde (2001)
Got SO much stuff wrong, but a good movie overall
I saw this movie 2 years ago and I found it to be really good. The only thing I didn't like was that it painted her as being someone who was pain stacking, agonizingly, and desperately driven to have a child. Personally, I don't think Marilyn cared if she had a child or not. She just wanted to be loved. They also put some stuff that weren't true and SO wrong about her. She NEVER had an affair with a high school teacher, she NEVER referred to ALL her husbands as Daddy, she NEVER had a bunch of pets in the home she shared with Arthur Miller, AND she NEVER (and I doubt) EVER had a menage a trois with two men. I understand that this film was based on a FICTIOIOUS book. But WHY on Earth did Joyce had to put some unnecessary stuff in it though? Poppy's portrayal of Marilyn is sweet and pretty much accurate, but excluding the false stuff that I mention before. All the others stars of the film are wonderful; even though some of them were and may not be real or even were romantically involved with her. Overall, the film is good, but would of done better had it been based ON FACTS and the book based by it was the same as well.
Norma Jean & Marilyn (1996)
Not a bad film, just wish they didn't painted her as something she wasn't and included unfounded stuff
I've seen this movie 4 years ago and I loved it. The only thing I didn't like about it, was that they painted Marilyn as a s*ut and they included stuff that NEVER happened to her in real life. She WASN'T sexually abused by her foster father, she WASN'T stupid, she NEVER had a female doctor when she was in therapy, she NEVER hated being referred to by her real name (Norma Jean), and she NEVER lied around with various men who we don't have much knowledge of who knew Marilyn and were depicted in the film. Ahsley Judd does a wonderful job playing Norma Jean, BEFORE she become Marilyn. But her portrayal of Norma Jean AFTER Marilyn comes in is so tepid and cruel. Mira Sorvino does an amazing job portraying Marilyn, AFTER Norma Jean is gone. She shows Marilyn as the sexy blonde bombshell that she is, but shows her as an emotional wreck who was ALWAYS insecure and feeling like her career-referring to the end of the film-would never come back. I still love this movie and the only thing I wish was that they keep it as true as possible and NEVER included stuff that was unfounded and misconceived.
Man in the Mirror: The Michael Jackson Story (2004)
A "biopic" that showed all the things Michael Jackson wasn't
I remember seeing this film back in 2004 and it was HORRIBLE! Never had I seen such a terrible film in my life. The way Michael was portrayed in this film was stupid, insolent, and disgusting. The actor who portrayed Michael in this film isn't even talented and DOESN'T look a thing like him (before and after the skin colour varying). They paint Michael as being like that B-word Kevin Federline was once married to! (We ALL know who that is.) They make Michael look like he's born with special needs, that he was a himbo (the opposite of a bimbo), self-centred, and basically was a schlub. The way they portrayed the other people in Michael's life was much worst. (Let alone Joe and Kathrine.) Overall, I find this film to be the most insulting and nastiest film ever made! Flex Alexander should be ashame of himself for portraying Michael in such a rude way and as the the director of the film, Allan Moyle. Well he should be ashame of himself too.
Hopefully the REAL biopic about MJ will be better and less nasty than this horrible one.
