Jiok (2021)
Absolutely MILES better than Squid Game
This is actually quite a surprising and good story. And, unlike Squid Game, it doesn't rely solely on violence, but actually depicts a realistic painting of how the world reacts to a horrifying incident.
In fact, the show is more about society and how humans react to something horrible, than about the violence itself.
And for that alone the show deserves praise. Because it criticizes society and possibly even silently criticizes what is going on right now in the world.
But there's more.
The show has good acting, characters boast a real development arch and the story has many surprising twists and turns that make you think. And, if that's not enough for you yet, it is simply exciting and the CGI is great!
After having watched Squid Game partially (and giving that piece of trash a 1 star rating) I was very very pleasantly surprised by how good "Hellbound" is, in fact.
Sure, there are a few minor annoyances. The change in behavior of the female lawyer? Hm. Not very believable. But that's about the only thing I have against it.
Generall a very good show to watch, one of the best available on NEtflix currently.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Bad acting, no character development, predictable plot, useless violence
I cannot, for the love of God, imagine why this became so popular.
1. The acting is atrocious. Super over the top, absolutely unbelievable, cringeworthy at best.
2. The main character has hardly any character development and is difficult to identify with (also due to very very poor acting).
3. The plot is super predictable and sometimes completely lacks logic (like with the policeman). If you think this is original watch "Oldboy" or "Battle Royale", "Saw" or "Hunger games" for pointless violence. These movies were made 20 years ago and, even though they are not good imo, they are far better than Squid game.
4. The whole game is pointless and hard to understand. The reason why certain characters behave in a certain way is random and not at all explained. The scenario is lousy and dialogues are laughable.
There is literally nothing good about this series. Waste of time. If you want something similar on Netflix from Korea then watch "Hellbound". It is leagues better than "Squid game" as it has good acting, a surprisingly deep story and a lot of realism in spite of the CGI and fantasy elements.
Family Guy: You Can't Handle the Booth (2019)
One of the best and most original episodes of Family Guy ever!
I am absolutely shocked by the amount of criticism this episode has had to endure. In my opinion it was a brilliant, unique and refreshing take on comedy. Having the cast comment on an episode and then these comments turning into a story of their own was, first of all, funny and secondly, innovative.
The only thing is that it sure is better to watch with captions, otherwise it could indeed becoming a bit confusing at some point. Even though the jokes were not the funniest, this episode deserves a 10 for original screenplay!
Dark Shadows (2012)
Shallow but funny fairy tale and Depp ego trip
I am generally not a Tim Burton fan. His grotesque and over the top style is mostly just too ludicrous for me to enjoy. "Big Fish" is a notable exception - that was a wonderful, heartfelt movie.
In Dark Shadows the dark comedy is fun and it all starts out good as Johnny Depp is amazed by all the progress in the 196 years he has been buried. The 70s vibe and character development of all main and side characters is satisfactory at the start. The absurd humor is generally funny. But somewhere towards 2/3rds of the movie it starts to derail. Heavily. No more character development, everything developing according to standard Hollywood structures and most of all, a dull, uninspired and laughable closing scene that leaves you with a bad aftertaste in your mouth.
The acting is OK, although Depp is quite boring in his ego-trip interpretation and constant hard stares. His acting prevents from viewer bonding with the protagonist in my opinion.
All in all it is not a bad movie and it can be quite entertaining, but don't expect the same emotional deepness as in "Big Fish". Good start, horrible ending.
El caso Alcàsser (2019)
Very chaotic
Extremely chaotic documentary with illogical editing, jumps and repetitive facts that are difficult to follow.
The story itself is interesting, especially with the advent of trash media in the background. But the documentary drags on way too long and becomes boring and hard to watch.
The filmmakers also show themselves too often which detracts from the immersion.
Not recommended.
Zimna wojna (2018)
Eye candy with no narrative or character development
Obviously taking its inspiration from Fellini, the story of two lovers in cold war Poland and "western" France is one that totally did not grip me. Sure, the photography is great & the acting is OK (though not great) but that's about it. Otherwise this is a story with no surprising twists, no real plot, no secondary themes. It's empty.
The scenario is boring and revolves around one single thing: the love of the two protagonists. That's it. Nothing else. There's very little about the political aspects of those times (just some details regarding censorship and the Polish communist government trying to create propaganda) and furthermore some twists are completely unbelievable (after many years of separation she suddenly finds him in an obscure bar in Paris?). Also, the eternal love, that the movie is supposedly about, is not built up at all, but rather a given at a certain point in time. Also, folk music and dance roughly amount to 1/4th of this anyway short movie (80 or so minutes). The dialogues are cringeworthy at best. In short, there's not much to like here, in my opinion.
It's hard to get into the skin of the two protagonists and their love. As said, it's not built up, there's hardly any character development. The two stay the same for 20 odd years and that is basically all the movie offers. No secondary characters, no other twists, no other deeper meaning.
I am boggled by how this movie (and also Pawlikowski's other tragically bad but somehow critically acclaimed movie 'Ida') received so much positive press. For me there's nothing in this movie except eye candy. Perhaps all the critics have suddenly fallen in love with Pawlikowski and the type of movies that have no message, no meaning and just superficial splendor. Maybe it's the black and white thing? I don't get it.
Seriously flawed scenario with very little surprising elements. In short, simply a boring movie with unbelievable and uninteresting characters and theme. It might be even worse than 'Ida'. How this could have been nominated for an Oscar is completely beyond me.
Darkest Hour (2017)
An average biopic that never really takes off
Apart from the obvious falsification of history (with the Tube ride being complete fabrication) this movie never really gets going. The political battles "behind the scenes" (apart from also being historically untrue) never really captured my attention.
Yes, this is quite a good character study, but the movie is slow and not propelled forward with sufficient drama and plot. It remains on a quite superficial level of political debates, a bit of Oldman showing off his skills and that's really it. Very little is said about the man himself, about his depression even about his family and wife. All characters surrounding Churchill are flat.
And even if we focus on arguably the best aspect of the movie, which is Oldman's interpretation of Churchill, I have to confess that I didn't like it as much as many others. Oldman has a tendency to portray Churchill as an old man with a slow rhythm of speech, a voice sounding like a man close to his grave, weighing every word and honestly, this becomes irritating after an hour or so. In fact, I don't believe it is even particularly true to the original - Churchill was quite a vigorous man in spite of his age.
The cinematography is sufficient but not spectacular. The music likewise. Nothing really stands out in this movie. It's not bad, but it is a far cry from a movie that should win an Oscar. Average at best.
Creative Control (2015)
Interesting character development
I would whole-heartedly disagree with most user reviews on here. This movie, whilst dealing with a modern theme and millenial-style behavior, does in fact deal with quite some important matters. First of all, it has great character development. All the main characters are perfectly realistic and believable, even though not all of them are deeply refined. But they are not shallow at all (except for Sophie perhaps). Secondly, this drama is about relationship difficulties in a modern age where technology is not only taking up our time but significantly interefering with human relationships. And the Augmenta reality system is a realistic tool to gently portray these likely future tendencies. The movie is never boring and the dialogues are good. An interesting drama about how technology increasingly shapes and devestates our lives.
Isle of Dogs (2018)
Overrated
Honestly I do not get the fascination with this title, and an average 8.0 on IMDB??
Yes, the animation is interesting (but gets old quickly), there's some dry humor (which gets extremely dry as it wears off quickly) and there's some glorification of Japan and its culture (some interesting Japanese drums that also get old quickly). The voice acting is definetely not bad and has its moments. Other than that however, the movie drags on, the characters are flat, the storyline borders on the ridiculous and the movies' "originality" in dialogue manifests itself as semi-intellectual after a short time.
If you like movies that blow their "differentness" to huge proportions and think they are extremely clever, Wes Anderson's childish and thin storyline will grab you, otherwise you will be happy to see the end credits.
It (2017)
Just an illogical sequence of supposedly scary moments
This movie tries to deal with so many items, it ends up being an illogical mess. Whilst the first scene starts out pretty good, soon the movie derails into a strange mixture between an 80's kids movie, drama and horror. In addition "IT" tries to deal with issues such as friendship, sexual harassment, bullying and...oh yeah, there's also a scary clown as a bonus. The movie lacks a clear motive and story line and basically fails on all of above counts. The horror which is haphazardly thrown in between other types of storytelling is not even truly scary as it is mostly quite ridiculous.
IT does not manage to find balance on any front: it does not know whether it's a drama, comedy or horror, it does not know whether it's intended for adults or children and it does not know how to edit all these scenes together. The scenario is a random succession of scenes which are vaguely connected.
I don't feel like writing much about this highly overrated movie. Simply speaking, a boring and uninspired mess.
Demain tout commence (2016)
Weak story with a lot of licorice
If you want to see Omar Sy in another "sweet" childish story filled with good people and intentions, then go see this one. It is filled to the brim with sugar and does hardly reflect reality.
I sometimes wonder: we don't like people that lie, right? So why do we like movies that lie? Because this movie is one big lie. It's a sweet bedtime story for children. I am not against people and situation that are optimistic, but this is just far-fetched.
The acting is average at best, certain scenes are barely watchable due to the amount of sweetness involved and generally the story line goes from one unrealistic moment to another. Character development is virtually lacking and there's just one truly surprising moment in the narrative which basically saves the credibility of this movie.
If you want to see a feel good movie, then perhaps this is not a bad choice. But objectively speaking, the movie scores below par on all important counts.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Dumb and overrated
Whereas Will Ferell can be funny at times, he completely misses the point in this absolutely below average comedy. Even the cameo appearances of respected actors like Tim Robbins or Ben Stiller cannot change what this movie really is: a dumb waste of time and a surprising lack of funny moments for a comedy.
The idea is that Ron Burgandy (Will Ferell), an ego-maniac who thinks he is a gift to all women, gets competition as the anchorman of a San Diego local news station. The competition is his lover, the charming Christina Applegate. Of course this starts a "hilarious" sequence of events.
To be honest, I do not even want to write a review for this movie. I cannot understand why some (even expert websites) call this a defining comedy or an instant classic. The only person out of the three cronies that Will Ferell hangs out with, who is even remotely funny is Steve Carell who plays the total, but sweet idiot Brick.
This movie is not funny, so dumb that it borders on offensive and just a complete waste of time. I would even recommend watching an action movie instead of this one...which means a lot as I hate action movies...!
The Taking (2014)
Very realistic horror that avoids the usual pitfalls
This review will be brief. Which does not mean that the movie is bad. On the contrary, the taking of Deborah Logan is one of the most scary and best horror movies I have seen in years, easily at par with Rec, which I consider another gem of the last 20 years.
It's in the found-footage genre, but as opposed to many other horrors it does not use cheap thrills and the same endless clichés of horror movies, which strongly benefits the narrative and the tense nature of the movie. Instead of, for example, relying on children that are scary or demonic appearances, this movie relies on an ultra-realistic atmosphere (including normal surroundings, police, hospital, everybody being a witness of somebody scary happening instead of only the protagonist etc etc) and an intelligent scenario about a women of about 50-60 years old that is quickly loosing her mind due to Alzheimer.
The acting of both female protagonists (the Alzheimer mother and her daughter) is superb and very convincing. The lack of cheap thrills actually enhances this movie but simultaneously strays away from the boring extended build-ups with nothing really happening that is so common in modern-day horror cinema (for example: House of the Devil, the Witch etc.).
It is thus an action-packed but not extremely fast movie with superb acting and some horrifying scenes. Everything is balanced, even realistic you could say (up to a certain point) and for me the Taking turned out to be an unexpected pleasure. Hopefully there will be more where that came from!
Klincz (1979)
Intelligent movie with daring photography and great acting
A great movie by a somewhat forgotten director from Poland. It's the story of a worker in early 80's Poland, who bumps into an ex box pro and turns into a boxing pro himself with all the delicacies that involved sports and representing the Polish nation during those communist times.
The brilliant photography is rough, uncut and intentionally underexposed with very powerful, daring (for the time) and unconventional shots. The acting by Lengren is fantastic and during this movie he used his talent for improvisation on several occasions. An interesting detail of this movie is that a lot of the characters are real life people, hinting towards nouvelle vague.
The screenplay and dialog are on occasion very funny, sad, wise and plainly great (written partially by another fantastic polish director, Filip Bajon).
This movie is a must see for people interested in early 80's Polish cinema which at that time had its last revival before the inevitable downfall in which it has arrived over the last 20 years.
