About what you'd expect from a movie about Death
16 September 2009
If you saw The Final Destination for character development and a deep storyline, you probably left the theater feeling empty, because the movie's void of any of those. If you came to see it for what it was worth (that is, it being a movie about death), you probably left having felt that you got your money's worth, because there's plenty of death in the movie! In fact, The Final Destination has the most bloodshed and action than any of the previous three, and it has better acting than the other sequels too.

You know the plot, so there's no sense in repeating it. Granted, there's no real originality here, but the deaths were always entertaining and thrilling to watch, especially in 3-D (probably the only way it's worth viewing). What I liked is that it knows it's the fourth entry in the series and that by this time, most people aren't taking the movie too seriously. So it has fun with it's characters, aiming for much more simplistic and ironic deaths than the ridiculously elaborate ones in part 3 (which took itself way to seriously and wasn't as good as this one, in my opinion). There is a scene of mass havoc towards the end of the movie involving a collapsing mall which was gross and shocking enough than anything since the crash scene of part 2. There's also a neat little swimming pool mishap and a death that screamed images of Sushi into my head. Yes, there's no story, no character work, or fantastic dialog, and parts of the movie felt rushed, especially the opening disaster.

I enjoyed it, but I only recommend to fans of the series. Those who didn't enjoy part 2 (The Final Destination being ripe with David R. Ellis's black humor) should stay away, or those who haven't seen any of the other movies before. This should be the last in the series, based on the ending. Without spoiling it, it wraps up all of the events in the entire series up nicely while still delivering the jolts.

Take part one and put it through a blender.....
28 November 2007
..... and you've got part 2. If you've seen part one, you've seen this sequel. Yes, the flashbacks do get annoying, and Ricky is a god awful narrator and character to follow. Flashbacks and references aside, it's oddly almost completely different. The murders here are dumbed down a bit, aiming for the more simplistic and spontaneous rather than the thoughtful and creative like in part 1.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, as there are a few disturbing moments added into here that weren't in the original, but everything else about the movie is incredibly incompetent. The acting, sets, cinematography, and even the special effects are mostly amateurish, and even laughable.

You'll figure out the scenes that make this film a classic among "bad" movie lovers, but other than that, I see no reason to watch this film (or even the rest of the series) after the conclusion of part 1.

Raises the bar, but lost me at the end
26 November 2007
Even though this wasn't an all out original idea for a slasher (You Better Watch Out came out in 1980), the idea of a killer representing a children's icon is not necessarily something the public will gulp down well. I have to immediately give the movie credit with doing everything it could of with this concept. No holds barred, this is a brutal film. There is a lot of bloody murders, harsh language, and sex in this film. Don't let your kid confuse it with the next Tim Allen movie.

Because it wasn't afraid to take risks, and had fun with the ideas it created, I enjoyed the film. But it's very flawed. There is a soul behind Billy's character and charisma between Mother Superior and him that I believe the makers of the film didn't even realize existed. Because of these loose ties between characters, the movie didn't jeer toward the direction I wanted it to towards the final act, and ends predictably. It made the movie have a gap that never closed.

Don't get me wrong, this a good film, but it's mainly good only for the murders and the killer Santa. There's no good soul or drama explored involving the killer. If it's only blood your after, see this.

The Grudge 2 (2006)
4/10
Slight improvement over part 1.......*slight*
20 July 2007
If you don't like reading long reviews, here's my review in a nutshell: There are better horror series out there that are interesting, innovative, and scary. This is not one of them.

The Grudge was a terrible excuse for an Americanization of an already flawed Japanese horror movie. The Grudge 2 is an Americanization of the previous Americanization from the last Grudge, but has a little Japanization thrown in. Get my drift?

Yes, The Grudge 2 does have it's moments. One shot in particular of Kayoko bolting straight at the camera sure did shock, as well as an interesting revelation towards the end involving Kebbel's character.

But the rest of it is just the same as the first. Yes, Kayoko still walks like there's a stick in her rectum, and yes, people die by getting pulled into bedsheets, clothes, mirrors, etc. I don't think there's a wide range of original deaths that Kayoko can come up with, given the fact that her weapons of choice are so blunt, such as a sweater.

Nay, this is one you can skip. If you hated the original, and wanted to see something slightly better, go ahead and watch this. But you're better off leaving it alone.

The Hitcher (2007)
2/10
Sophia Bush is great, but the rest is garbage
3 July 2007
Hmmmmm, don't even bother with this one. I am not completely against remakes, but why remake a movie that's only 20 years old? Better yet, why remake a movie that many film buffs have seen and expect it to be a hit at the box office?

Well, the same questions could be asked about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003, but the difference between that was that Chainsaw was a good movie that brought fresh ideas to a dying franchise. The Hitcher 2007 is almost exactly like the original, but everything that made the original interesting is lost in this one. No brutality, no sense of isolation, no creepiness to John Ryders character. The dialogue is also extremely lame, and even laughable at times, and the whole movie feels extremely rushed.

The only few things that bring this movie up is a well choreographed struggled between Bush and Bean in a motel room and of course, Sophia Bush's performance, which is extremely impressive. This girl can act! Props to her doing the best she could with a zero script.

As the credits rolled after the lame finale, I was glad this underperformed at the box office. A franchise being created out of this trash is the last thing I can see down the road.

So it's not the original...but there's plenty of fun to be had here!
5 January 2007
I know I will get heat for having enjoyed Black Christmas 2006. Hell, I can't really even call this a "good" movie. It is severely flawed in many ways, and it's not even closely comparable to the original. Monster holes are present in the story line. The cinematography at times is choppy, dark, and grainy. And, most of all, there is ZERO suspense. How can a movie with such negativity possibly get a 7 out of 10?Well, technical goofs aside, there is a lot of fun to be had here!

It has a completely different atmosphere and tone than the original had, as well as a completely different approach at it's villain. For one, the violence and murders in the 2006 version are much gorier and more over the top! Okay, so the original's approach at implied violence worked much better, but I appreciated the filmmaker's aiming for something different! I had a lot of fun watching Billy maim and dismember all of the sorority girls and their boyfriends! The kills were absolutely crazy! A lot of blood splashing!

Unfortunately, the characters here, unlike in 1974, are purely 2-dimensional and unforgivably stupid. However, the performances were very well done, and there were some truly witty lines of dialogue! One thing this film reaped was dark humor! Much appreciated! I especially LOVED the performance done by Billy's mother! She was the best actress in the film and unfortunately had the least screen time.

Also different from the original is the fact that Billy is identified and his origin is revealed. Again, this completely takes away the suspense and mystery of the killer like the original's had. BUT, the flashback scenes were very well done! It really got to you and was disturbing to say the least. It also did a very good job of portraying a morbid family. Well done on that part!

Again, as I said before, there is NO suspense here! The violence and scares are pretty much laughable, but that's why this film is fun! It's so bad and flawed that it's a riot and a good time! My advice: Think of it as a completely different film. In no way does this hurt the original. The 1974 version still exists. The 2006 version will go nowhere, but it will always remain a fun little piece of cheese to watch whenever anyone wants to have a good time.

What a let down......what's with all the hype???
27 December 2006
I saw this movie because every review I read of it said that it was one of the scariest movies of the new millennium. I really don't understand what all of the hype was about. For one thing, the dialogue in this movie was laughably bad ("What if something strange is going on?"...what????). The acting didn't blow my socks off either. It could have been because the script barely gave the actors anything to work with....the characters are purely 2-dimensional to me and I didn't give a hoot about them at all. Another thing is that the movie extremely boring. Extremely. Sure, there are a couple of "jolts" here and there, but for the movie's 112 minute length, it sure didn't use it's time up wisely. Most of the movie contains characters talking about stuff that had barely anything to do with the plot. What was the point of that??

To top it off, the movie makes no sense. Yes, I believe I understood the intentions of the ghosts, but how that fits into the events that actually occur in the movie is beyond me. Also, much of the movie is played out in little vignettes, which makes the story hard to follow at times. And don't even get me started with the ending. What exactly happened there?

I can give Kurosawa credit for placing some truly frightening images throughout the film. There are very creepy shots of ghosts and other unsettling images. If they reflected more on those images and elaborated on them, it would have made the movie much stronger. But they didn't, and instead elaborated more on social commentary, which was interesting, but again, portrayed in an extremely dull way. Yes, it's a message movie. Okay, fun. I'll just get the message of my review right out here in the open: find a better way to spend your spare time than watching this.

Turistas (2006)
4/10
Go home....before you buy your ticket
29 November 2006
Without making this review to long, I just want to say that Turistas starts off well, and then goes way downhill once the "horror" begins. The opening half of the movie is very well developed. It draws out it's characters well, sets up moments of suspense for the horrors that will come, and keeps the viewer interested due to it's beautiful cinematography.

Once the terror and violence actually begin (which doesn't happen until the last third of the movie no less) it goes way downhill. For one, it was marketed as a torture movie, but there is barely any of it! Sure, there's a brutal killing here and there, but when it came to gore, this film was very tame. Second, the cinematography in during the night scenes was awful, with the chase scenes and violence barely viewable. You could not tell what was happening on screen, and all of the viewers of the film were lost with what was going on. Third, the last third was extremely predictable. You could tell who was going to die and when. The main villain (who ironically looks like the President of Iran) is not well drawn out, and the "climax" of the film is pitiful.

There is however, fine acting jobs done by all involved, and a particular death scene that made me squirm in my seat due to its brutality and intensity. When the chase scenes and violence were actually viewable (of which it rarely was) it actually was pretty intense. However, the actual deaths were not (save one or two), and the dumb decisions made by all of the characters may be the stupidest yet to grace the screen this year.

It's sad. Turistas had potential. It started off great, but just went in the wrong direction I guess. I have never seen a movie that fell so much on its rear.

Scary Movie 4 (2006)
5/10
The gas tank is halfway full
16 April 2006
Some movies are like a halfway filled gas tank. The part of tank that has the gas keeps the car rolling, but the empty part doesn't help the car move at all.

Such is the instance with Scary Movie 4. The first half of the film is completely void of laughs and relies on the been-there-done-that slapstick/goofy violence you'd expect to see on a re-run of a Three Stooges episode on PBS. However, the second half of the movie has quite a few laughs and had enough energy to keep me interested in the movie, but the movie needed a refill for the last few minutes, as it runs out of gas before it reaches the finish line.

This time around the plots of recent movies such as War of the Worlds, The Grudge, Million Dollar Baby, Saw, The Village, and quite a few others are intertwined to form a smudge of a comedic plot. Why explain it? Trying to compress the plot into a tiny paragraph is like trying to squash a block of cement in a vice. It just can't be done.

I don't know why Scary Movie 4 has to keep on recycling the same slap stick jokes that have been in the previous movie. The only laughs in this film come from spoken one-liners. It's as if they had no other funny dialogue to come up with, and added fart and ball jokes instead that reminded me of the previous bomb this year, Date Movie. Another problem Scary Movie 4 seems to have is a lack of knowledge of when to stop. There are many laughs, but many of the same jokes are played on for such a long time and are repeated that you feel ashamed that you laughed at them when they started. It doesn't know when to quit.

What keeps the movie alive the most is, like in Scary Movie 3, Leslie Nielsen playing the President of the United States. He again shows us how much he is needed for these kinds of movies, and there is a very funny scene in which he doesn't know what to say during a speech to the United Nations.

If you liked Scary Movie 3, most likely you'll like Scary Movie 4. I don't think anyone who found many recycled jokes in Scary Movie 3 will find anything fresh here. After all, do the movies Scary Movie 4 spoofs have much originality, even when played seriously?

Defines Reality
26 December 2005
Brokeback Mountain: The most realistic and heartwarming film of the year. I must say, December of 2005 is turning out to be one hell of a month for film fans. First, there was the brilliant King Kong, then there was Munich, and now there's Brokeback Mountain.

Though everyone pretty much knows that this film is about gay cowboys, it's about much more than that. It's more about how Enis and Jack live their lives together in hiding, and how society's disapproval of homosexuality affects not only Ennis and Jack, but the one's who do not accept it. However, those themes are very subtle, and the message isn't slapped right in your face. You really have to observe the chain of events that occur in the film. For ever action in the film, there is a reaction.

Another interesting thing about Brokeback Mountain is that you can easily identify the structure of the story. By that I mean the key sequences in the film. Without giving anything away, I'll start by saying the complication of the film is Ennis's and Jack's relationship on Brokeback having to be kept secret. There is also an easily identifiable turning point and climax.

The acting by both actors of Jack and Ennis are top notch, as are the performances of the contributing characters. The setting is definitely an important part of the picture, and helps express the sedate, yet tense mood of the picture.

The story, like I said before, is perfectly structured, and filled with funny and heartbreaking moments. Everything is wrapped up very nicely in a perfect denouement.

Ennis and Jack are the cutest on screen couple I have seen in a while. It's rare a couple on screen has so much passion for each other. The film is very realistic. It defines reality due to it's dead-on portrayal of homophobia in America.

I believe, while being very subtle, there is a strong message in this film that will make people think.

King Kong (2005)

Monster Epic (no pun intended)
18 December 2005
King Kong is one hell of a monster epic! Where do I begin? Peter Jackson once again manages to mix a complex, emotional love story with an edge-of-your-seat atmosphere. It's comes as no surprise that this film is one of Jackson's best.

One of the reasons why this film succeeds is that it manages to, like I mentioned above, mix a sweet love story in with gut-wrenching action. Trust me, this movie is not for the faint of heart. Don't let the PG-13 rating fool you, this is one of the most violent films of the year. It starts off quite slowly, but once the violence gets into gear, it never stops. However, besides your heart pumping faster due to the constant suspense and horror that is on screen, your heart will break whenever the love story part of the movie kicks in. The movie itself, to me, is a love story/tragedy. The acting is excellent from every performer, and the feelings Jackson intended you to have for the characters are there.

At the end of the film, the theater I was in gave the film a standing ovation, and rightfully so. It was very good.

The Fog (2005)
2/10
The first tomato can be thrown at the screen two minutes after the opening credits
20 October 2005
I wasn't angry about The Fog remake until I heard that it was going to be released by Revolution Studios, a company known to house crap movies. From then on, my hopes weren't that high, and they sank even lower when I saw the trailer. It looked to much like Boogeyman or Darkenss Falls rather than an atmospheric, imaginative, horror production like the original.

The original Fog deserves to be a cult classic and is a great film, but I thought it could have used a couple of improvements. It was not John Carpenter's best effort, but it still was an 8 out of 10 movie. This remake had potential because it could have corrected some of the plot holes from the original. Not surprisingly, the modernized Fog created new loopholes in the story and in addition had a terrible script.

The characters here were clichéd. The naive young girl who sees "horrible things" happening and who is befriended by her "hot ex-boyfriend". There is even a token black guy who serves as the "comic relief" for the film. Why can't they have black heroes in horror movies? Every character is seen in some state of undress, including Stevie Wayne, a mother of a young teenage boy named Andy, who struts around in panties in front of her son (I thought that was funny). I'm surprised Andy's old nanny wasn't shown strutting around in her undies while cleaning the dishes.

The leper colony ghosts were not scary. They were all see through, and instead of a giant fishing hook, Father Blake carried a cane (WTF??), not for support while walking, but for a scene near the end of the film where flying glass shards contribute to the death of a character. Also, the fog in this film is all CGI, and is not nearly as menacing as the one in the original was.Father Malone's character in the original was a major contributor to the story, because he represented the sins of the founding fathers. In this one, he's just a stupid old drunk who has a minimal impact on the story and plays more like the typical "old lady who can see the future" kind of character. Also, why aim for a PG-13? It's obvious the filmmakers wanted to put some gore in this, and they did, because there were many deaths that involved people being maimed and/or set on fire, not necessarily in that order. Only a few more drops of blood and it would be R.

There are two good things though. There is one pretty shocking death scene that was cool and there were some cool cinematography shots. The eerie image of the sailors on their ship in the fog gave me the chills. There was also a really creepy ghost who was only shown in shadows (you never saw his face) and who wore a top hat. It would have been interesting if they showed that ghost more, but alas, they shied away from it.

And don't get me started on the ending. It's supposed to be a shocker, but it's extremely predictable. It also makes everything that preceded it make little sense. What was the point of that? Stevie Wayne's cheesy closing monologue was even cheesier than the concluding monologue in House of the Dead.

Overall, this dreadful remake ran shy of where it could have won the race.

Venom (2005)

Well, Meagan Good does have more than just a cameo appearance....
17 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
It's hard to comment on this movie. It's one of the few movies Dimension actually has not shelved (it's hard to come up with a reason why) and it was rushed into a an unimpressive 500 theaters it's opening day. Maybe Dimension was afraid of how people would respond to a swamp creature using his tow truck to pull a house apart piece by piece.

Ray Sawyer is just a tow truck driver, until he rescues a Voodoo priestess from a bad car accident, and in return, he gets attacked by a bag full of snakes and drowns. At the morgue, Ray comes back to life, and stalks a group of teenagers who witnessed the awful crash occur.

What brings this movie down is it's paper thin characters. I didn't care for one moment about any of them. Also, the dialog was less than ho-hum. Also, it was very predictable. Characters did the typical stupid horror movie character things, like check creaky noises, call out people's names, and trip on a rock while being chased. I also could immediately pick out who the final girl would be. And why did the camera have those quick white flashes whenever somebody died or whenever the killer was shown?

What's good? Well, there is an impressive suspense scene where the killer walks underneath swamp waters to get to his victims and a tense sequence where the final girl must camouflage herself with bunch of other dead bodies while the killer looks on.

But other than that, It's another August/September disappointment. I was looking forward to it, but I did not get what was expected.

Cry Wolf (2005)
8/10
Very good, yet flawed
17 September 2005
Is there really a killer on a secluded high school campus? If so, who is doing the killing? What is the order of the victims? What is the motive? Things are not as they seem in this twisty slasher/thriller.

Not a typical teen slasher flick. What makes Cry Wolf stand out is it's impressive acting by the teen leads as well as intelligent dialogue and believable actions by the characters. There are also some excellent suspense sequences that work, including a gut wrenching chase sequence involving Lindy Booth. I also think that they did get away with the PG-13 rating because the bloodless murders were actually warranted. Not with suspense, but with the story.

One of the flaws however of Cry Wolf, is you can tell it's edited badly. Swear words are badly dubbed over to get the lower rating, as well as some blood and gore from the murders. I know you don't need blood and gore in murders for them to be scary, but you can't just edit out blood and gore randomly and expect the murders to make sense. Also, the cinematography was awful. The camera was very shaky and I couldn't tell what was going on at times.

The ending, looking back on it, is weird. One part is predictable and dumb, but the other part is clever and twisty. I guess when you think twice about it it all makes sense. I think it could have been executed better, but it was still okay.

I will wait to see the directors cut on DVD to see if my opinion changes.

Twist Ending rule #116: Always have the "big" revelation in the last five minutes
13 August 2005
I have to admit, I wasn't a huge fan of Krueger's "The Ring", but I think he might have hit the mark with Skeleton Key. It is a very effective little chiller with a great, dark atmosphere and a good twist ending.

Caroline, a former nurse at a hospital in New Orleans, is sent to a backwoods country home to hospice for a dying man, Ben, who's wife, Violet, claims had a stroke in the attic of the house. Little does Caroline know, the house has a mysterious past (of course....does any house in a horror film not?), and a widespread southern religion called Hoodoo (no, i'm not mispronouncing it, it's called Hoodoo) is somehow connected to the mysterious occurrences that ensue.

Far from an original plot, what keeps the Skeleton Key interesting is it's impressive performances from Gina Davis and Kate Hudson, as well as a dark, mysterious, suspenseful atmosphere that kept me interested. The movie relies on buildup and doesn't really have any "fright" moments until the last 30 minutes, which I really didn't mind. I also liked the twist ending. It's not the kind of revelation that you connect with the rest of the film the second time you watch it. It's just a twist that's pretty neat.

There are some of those repetitive "boo" scares that many horror films have relied on in the past 30 years, and you may leave the theater thinking "well, that ending was simple enough. But why was getting to that point so difficult anyway?". You'll know what I mean when you see it. Also, I did appreciate the buildup, but when it got to the payoff, well, it was cool, but I expected more during the climax.

But all in all, The Skeleton Key was a neat little horror item that I recommend. It will be forgotten in twenty years, yes, but that doesn't mean it should be neglected now.

The Island: The Return of Michael Bay
10 July 2005
Wow! What a ride! I must say Michael Bay is back after his dip with Pearl Harbor. This film has action sequences that resemble Bay's earlier efforts, like The Rock and Bad Boys II. Not that him recycling some of his previous ideas is a bad thing. It actually works well with the film and generated excitement and suspense with the audience. I must tell you there is a scene involving a high rise office building that will leave you breathless. Also, this movie has lots of humor which was appreciated by the audience. The only down side is that it is a little to long, but it still held my interest. Bay fans, as well as sci-fi and suspense fans, will surely be pleased, as well as everyone else. Highly recommended.

Hide and Seek: 7/10

Hide and Seek is a pretty creepy little thriller that all horror and thriller buffs should give a chance. I'm sure you already know what the movie is about, and I won't repeat the plot to you guys, but what I will say is that this movie is fantastic......until the last 30 minutes. The first 80 are suspenseful, scary, somewhat funny, entertaining, and keeps you guessing. But when the story resolves, it's less than thrilling. The twist to me was pretty predictable. I was a little disappointed by this ending. But overall, Hide and seek is a pretty creepy little thriller, with fantastic performances and nice little atmosphere.

A fun little movie!
1 September 2004
Tobe Hooper's 2003 version of the Toolbox Murders is a fun little movie. It's a bloody good time to watch, although it's not scary, but the fun factor makes up for it. I haven't seen the original, but I'm sure it's better than it. The middle part drags a little bit, but once the main character stumbles apon the "hidden" portion of her apartment building, the fun and action begins! Props to Tobe Hooper for a great and well done opening sequence. Most films that have somebody killed in the beginning have the next scene take place somewhere else or on the next day, the scene after it takes place the second after it! I give it an 8 out of 10.

Great and funny in every aspect!
5 April 2004
Club dread is another great entry in the Broken Lizard comedy series. I loved Super Troopers, and was looking forward to this outing. I got just what I expected! A fun filled good time! It was a very funny and cute movie! It definitely is one of the best slasher movie spoofs ever made (along with the Scary Movie's and Pandemonium) and really keeps you interested in what will happen next. The actors are really funny too and it had a really good cast. I thought Jordan Ladd was wonderful in her role as Penelope. I hope the Broken Lizard comedy troop makes a third movie! I recommend Club Dread to all horror movie lovers and people who love comedies! It's a really fun movie to watch.

Terrific, Surprising, and truely horrifying.
22 March 2004
Dawn of the Dead 2004 is a terrific, surprising, and truly horrifying horror film. It digs deep down into our minds to find true fear in all of us, and sparks a nerve in our head to go along with it. It's a terrific film because:

1) The zombies can run and jump and are therefore ten times scarier than the ones in the original. It's better and scarier this way.

2) The outbreak and scary stuff happen right in the beginning of the movie and therefore is an edge of your seat thrill ride all the way through.

3) You actually care for the characters, well, the humans at least.

4) The sets, make up effects, and gore effects are outstanding.

I can go on forever listing why this film rules, but this review would take 3 days to read. What I can write is, this film is just as good (if not better) than the original, and is a new horror classic. Props to director Zack Snyder for giving us such a treat to sit through. I loved it! To all horror fans, GO SEE DAWN OF THE DEAD!

A perfect comedy for fans of Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller. 10/10.
19 January 2004
Along Came Polly is a cute romantic comedy that succeeds in making the audience laugh and has many funny and sweet moments. Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller are wonderful as the leading characters, and the ferret that Jennifer Aniston owns is adorable! I loved this movie. I recommend this movie to all Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston fans, and to everyone who loves goofball and romantic comedies. I laughed so much during a lot of scenes, and enjoyed myself throughout the film. I give Along Came Polly a 10 out of 10.

I liked it a lot!

Friday the 13th part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan is the best Friday the 13th film in the series. My top three are: Part 8, part 6, and part 4. I don't know why alot of people are trashing it, but I do know that it had really good visuals and the dog was the cutest thing ever! I really thought that the kills were done the best here and were the most creative out of all of the other ones in the series. 10 out of 10.

A body pit filled with over 60 dismembered bodies is discovered
5 December 2003
And that's only the beginning. There's more. A man with a mask made of human skin is stalking this couple that's driving from Los Angeles the Florida. He uses a chainsaw as a weapon to slice people up, skin them, and then eat them with his demented maniac family. Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw III is a great movie. I really liked it. It's the 3rd best in the series (2nd best is the remake) and it deserves more credit than it's getting. 9 out of 10.

Come on people, it wasn't that bad

Why does everybody hate this movie so much. I mean, it's not a masterpiece like Halloween or other popular horror movies, but I thought it was fun to watch and the third story was actually kind of clever. I think this movie should get credit for some of the effort they put in to making this movie. It was great in a campy sort of way.

A heart pounder
19 October 2003
I must say, there have been a share of really scary horror movies this year and really cheesy ones. The 2003 remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre definitely fits into the scary category. Many horror films attempts at scares usually come within the first 5 minutes of the film. Usually those first five minutes in those horror films are just gruesome, with gory visuals and horny teenagers "doing it". However, horror films that do not start on a gory note, such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, really succeed the most in bringing chills down your spine later on in the movie. The beginning of the the film has five friends driving from Mexico to Dallas on a lonely stretch of highway road, smoking pot and laughing about. When they stumble apon a female hitchhiker, they find out that where the hitchhiker was running away from is a deadly and horrifying clan of cannibals. Although the hitchhiker doesn't mention the family, once the hitchhiker commits suicide right in front of them, they realize that something is way wrong. What they don't know is that they have already been trapped in the hands of backwood maniacs. From then on, terror ensues. This movie is really scary. I must say, I think it's just as good (if not better) than the original. Although the style is different, the suspense and tension is still here, with all kinds of chases and jump scares. To all horror fans who want a good scare, this is one hell of a movie!
