96 Souls (2016)
Disappointing plot with no soul
The movie started with what seemed to be a well executed story line but somehow lost the plot half way through. The director could have either done away with the pseudo philosophy , or at least developed it properly. Amateurish special effects and cardboard acting from some actors did not help.
Lost in Translation (2003)
Lost in Japan
<SPOILER DOWN BELOW>
Undoubtedly a well directed movie. On the other hand it tends to be a bit stretched out. The portrayal of how the main characters experience an alien culture is uncannily unrealistic but the pace of the movie tends to whittle down after the first 45 minutes without seeming to be going further. Whilst the two main characters are constantly developing, the movie did not and tends to be rather boring after a while.
On a different track, it is very interesting for such a movie coming out in 2003 not to have any sex scene between the two main characters when the plot itself was literally shouting out for this to happen!!! That was refreshing.
Overall, could have been a 9/10 movie. I give it 7
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Blows your brain away
Gargantuan piece of art. This last episode surely follows in the footsteps of its predecessors. Its got it omissions or rather its often abrupt shortcuts and it is this which leaves it short of being a masterpiece. One thing is for sure though. If the past is anything to go by, Masterpiece it will be when Mr Jackson gives us the extended cut. Tolkien deserves naught less!

Seven Years in Tibet (1997)
Stunning scenery with a long drawn plot
A dreadful reminder of the plight of the Tibetan people too often forgotten beneath the troubles of other oppressed peoples.
Slow to start it takes over an hour before the main narrative starts to emerge. Once there however the script and cinematography work hand in hand with Brad Pitt and manage to show a story of the struggle of humility and peace with arrogance. We have Heinrich's arrogant behaviour at the begining being mirrored in the attitude of China:then as now in 2003. One would hope that what 7 years in Tibet did to Heinrich, 70 years in Tibet would eventually do to China.
My vote .... 7
Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001)
Enjoyable
I wasn't expecting much so I was pleasantly surprised. Far from being a war weepy it takes a serious topic and attempts to show the human side of an inhuman time in history. Sometimes crude with no predictable Arnie heroics. It succeeds partially. Penelope Cruz fits the part fantastically but can't say the same for Nick who is the proverbial fish out of the water. Atrocious Italian accent for an Italian Soldier!!! Couldn't Madden have found someone more believable... please. Overall 7 out of 10 but could have made an 8.5 grade easily.
