Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Better than the Godfather part II
I just saw this movie and I always wanted to see it. It was on AMC so I deicded to watch it. I thought that it would be your ordinary Godfather like mafia movie, but it was way better. This movie might not have the best editing, but it has a great story and Acting. De Niro is good as always, But James Woods is the one that stands out in probably the best performance of his career. Like most Mafia movies it deals with the American Dream, but while Adding to the American Dream story there is also a theme of loyalty, friendship, and love. The love story between Noodles and Debroah is probably one of the best love stories ever on film. The scene where the youngest member of the gang dies and Noodles' retaliation is beautiful. I have seen alot of Gang/Mafia movies and probably this is my 2nd favorite (Behind the Godfather.) I thought the film would move slow but it moved fast un-like Godfather part II in which there was all this extra dialoge that the film didn't need. There is great direction from Sergio Leone, and a great Musical score by Ennio Morricone. I recommend all people to see this movie, it is a wonderful story. I would also like to buy this on DVD and see the original 6 hour film. I saw the 4 hour. 10/10
The Mission (1986)
Glorious
The First Time I saw this movie my father bought the score by Ennio Morricone. The score is one of the Greatest ever written for the movie. The Cinematography is beautiful. This film is probably one of the best films ever made about religion. The film begins with Jeremy Irons (Giving a beautiful performance) And Liam Neeson (in one of his first movies) go to the waterfall where Gabriel (Irons) is to find the old mission where the old missonary died. The scene where he is playing the oboe is one of the greatest music scenes ever put on film. The opening scene is a classic, where the man is on the cross and falls down the waterfall. Robert De Niro, (In another convincing performance) Shines as Mendoza. The final scene when the army invades and when De Niro is looking at Irons is one of the greatest Movie Looks of all time. And the ending wants you to wonder, Is where God is Love is, or is it the other way around. This is the best religious film ever made, and one of the finest historical dramas made.
Local Hero (1983)
A modern Fairy Tale
The First Time I saw this movie I was a little boy. It's one of my father's favortie movies and I watched it again. This is movie is one of the quirkiest films ever. The way it's funny is unique, The characters are so real that they can be you or next door neighbor. Mark Knopfler's music only adds to the greatness. 3 of the most memorable scenes are when Mac (Peter Riegert) and Danny (Peter Capaldi) run over an injured rabbit in the middle of driving. Another Great scene is when Gordon (Denis Lawson giving a great performance.) Cooks the rabbit, and the final scene is one of the greatest in film, when Victor (Christopher Rozycki) Sings "Lonesome for a Lone Star Man like Me." I can't get enough of that scene it's just perfect. If you want to see a modern fairy tale today see Local Hero.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Magnificent
The Usual Suspects is probably one of the most clever, brilliant, and absolute magnificent movies I have ever seen. Everything about this movie is good. Kevin Spacey's First Oscar winning performance is the best of his career. The Entire cast shines also shines. Benicio Del Tero is over the top (In a good way) as Fred Feinster. The Evocative and gripping score pulls you in and is really suspensful. Christopher McQuarie's Screenplay is one of the best ever written. The ending is probably the best ending I've ever seen. If you are ever at a video store, rent or buy The Usual Suspects. YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Memento (2000)
An Absolute Master Piece
This is a perfect film. Christopher Nolan is brilliant in his direction. The Screenplay is one of the best ever. Nolan has wonderful touches. Moss and Paoltaino are good. Guy Pearce is wonderful as Leonard "Lenny" Shelby looking for the man who murdered his wife. Overall a great movie. This is one of the Greatest films ever made.
